Why do TRA's continually deny that they are homophobic when they describe our orientations as 'genital preferences'? by Smolders1 in LGBDropTheT

[–]JulienMayfair 62 insightful - 1 fun62 insightful - 0 fun63 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I remember the point when it finally dawned on me what trans activists were demanding compared to what LGB activists had traditionally demanded. TRAs demand a fundamental shift in how sex and gender are defined FOR EVERYONE IN THE ENTIRE HUMAN RACE.

Think for a minute about the magnitude of that demand compared to, say, our demand to be able to engage in relationships with our partners of choice without constant moral condemnation.

Once you grasp the massive scope of TRA demands, nothing they affirm or deny should surprise you. We wanted to be left alone to live our lives. They are at war with reality.

[–]JulienMayfair 52 insightful - 1 fun52 insightful - 0 fun53 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

One behavior pattern that the women of r/GenderCritical had figured out is that pushing their way into other groups' spaces is part of the thrill. To be able to coerce "inclusion" makes them feel powerful and validated.

There were stories of trans women who would go around a town and join every group for women they could find, at which point, they would provoke conflicts and demand that all conversation center on them. Then, when the women responded negatively, they would cry "transphobia" and try to get the group shut down.

How many times have we heard that? A group exists for women discussing reproductive health, and a trans woman arrives and starts policing everyone's language when, in fact, not having any of those reproductive parts, he has no reason to be there.

I posted this elsewhere, but I've noticed that one common TRA strategy is to break things down into weird little pieces and then come up with arguments based on those pieces in isolation with no reference to how those pieces are integral to some kind of whole. The thing is, attraction is holistic. We take in everything about that person.

If you're 6'6" with a square jaw, wide shoulders, a prominent Adam's apple, huge hands, and a deep voice, you're not going to come across to anyone as female. Anyone who can see will add those things up in a fraction of a second. Talking about genitals and genital preferences is a red herring. Attraction is not based on any one thing; it's the whole picture.

We should always call TRAs out on this when they pursue style of argument.

Edit: I have a high-functioning autistic friend, and he has a tendency to do this as well. He's a friend, but it can be maddening.

Umm, bullshit. Challenor's problems were all highly public knowledge that anyone could have found via the simplest Google search. Getting ejected from TWO political parties in the UK isn't something you accidentally overlook.

"We didn't adequately vet her background" might be credible where there was a charge from 20-30 years ago that might not show up on a background check.

Reddit is simply infested with TRAs and TRA sympathizers who thought no one would notice. Who will they hire next? Maybe they can offer Jessica Yaniv a public relations position. What's Karen White doing these days? Is he out of prison?

Shit hits fan on gay male group gone TQ+ by JulienMayfair in LGBDropTheT

[–]JulienMayfair[S] 44 insightful - 8 fun44 insightful - 7 fun45 insightful - 8 fun -  (0 children)

Update: And now the T there are playing the "This is making me feel unsafe, and I may have to leave" card. What crybullies they are. One the one hand, they've maneuvered themselves into mod positions where they can ban anyone they like, but on the other, they have to play the victim whenever someone doesn't kiss their asses.

Edit: And now they've dragged racism (Strategy #2) into it, even though no one on the gay side mentioned race.

And here comes Strategy #3: Denounce anyone who disagrees with you as having "archaic ideas about gender." No has told anyone else that they need to educate themselves -- yet. The TQ+ congratulate themselves on being so sophisticated.

Edit 2: The shit is now flying so fast that even the TQ+ are attacking each other. One said that he thought gay men who wanted gay male only spaces should just so somewhere else. Another one attacked him asking if that meant he thought it would be OK to have a whites only group. (I guess by implication, the second guy is saying that it's not even OK for gay men to leave the group; they have to stay there and support the TQ+ even while they're being told to shut up.) The first attacked back saying that the second had a toxic need to "school" people even though they are basically on the same side.

Edit 3: Now lots of people are commenting on "how toxic this group is." They're not wrong, but they probably won't have the courage to say that the toxicity came in with the drive to be inclusive and centering of the QT+.

Edit 4: There are now 449 (!) posts on this one thread with people going back and forth, mostly trashing each other. I think one of the myths underlying the whole mess is that there is something known as the LGBTQIA+++ community. No, it's not a community. It's a bunch of people whose interests don't really align, and if you force them together, the only way to do it is by actively silencing dissent.

Edit 5: And speaking of actively silencing dissent, the Mod Police are now on the scene with this comment:

Hey, Moderator here. Just a reminder to flag transphobic and transexclusionary comments. They go against or community guidelines and have no place here. We don’t know they’re there if you don’t flag them for us. Thanks for your help!

I agree, but I think this group has always been political.

I would like the LGB to oppose things like 1) Unrestricted Self-ID, 2) Tracking children into transition, and 3) Transwomen in women's sports.

In terms of gender, yes, we spent the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s trying to loosen the bonds of gender roles. Then, strangely, people started wanted to put themselves back into boxes. We may need to understand why people want to put themselves back into gender boxes, even if they are new ones, rather than do without them. Has the postmodern ethos left people with such a lack of a sense of stable identity that people are returning to gender roles for a sense of stability?

No, I can't vote for Trump. Even more than gay rights at this point, I care about the planet and the natural environment, and Trump's anti-environmentalist policies are unacceptable to me. Second is healthcare. I'm self-employed and have bought my health insurance for the last few years via the exchange. While not perfect, the ACA has been important for me. Republicans refuse to do anything about healthcare. Trump said he would repeal the ACA and replace it with something better. Four years later, we still haven't heard word one about what that would be.

While I might agree with Trump on a few principles, it's not enough to outweigh the fact that he's basically a horrible human being, unqualified for his job, most of which is done by the people around him who cover for him.

And his response to COVID was to drop the ball.

The TQ+ agenda is annoying, but it's not more important to me than protecting the planet.

This is one of those cases where I think gendered expectations do come into play in the sense that women are supposed to be agreeable and compliant, looking out for any supposed underdog. A lot of SciFi/Fantasy readers imagine themselves as outcasts of one sort or another, and I think they saw Rowling as someone who understood them and wrote to them. Because she has stood up for her principles -- which they consider the wrong ones -- they can't forgive her, especially when we are in such a crazy cultural moment.

In contrast, Gervais has always been snarky and has a very different fan base.

As to how it got this bad, most cultural analysts are in agreement: Social media in general and Twitter in particular. It is having a corrosive effect on our ability to function as a society where people with different points of view can live together without constantly being at war. People now see this constant bickering as normal.

Sex and dating choices are inherently discriminatory. My sexual and dating choices are none of anyone else's business, but they can't stand that and want to make my choices their business. The fact is that I don't owe anyone validation or sexual access to my body. If I don't want to date someone who's made up like a circus clown, I don't have to. Maybe I don't want to date someone who has to be the center of attention in every room.

I've been saying for years that identity politics should be provisional and should be discarded once it accomplishes its reasonable civil rights goals. When you become permanently invested in it, it becomes a road that leads to endless and ever-more fine-grained obsession with grievance along with ever-more overbearing demands on everyone around you. It leads away from the path to becoming a mature adult with healthy boundaries.

Also, it's funny that all those "unique" individuals are dressed up in very conventional fetish gear.

So, go ahead -- be and do whatever you want, but don't demand that I praise you for it or tell you that I find it desirable when I don't. I'm not required to. I don't owe you anything.

There's also the fact that the trans demographic has gone through massive changes with the end of medical gatekeeping and the rise of self-ID, unleashing a flood of heterosexual male autogynephiles who were, historically, never part of the LGB community, which is all too obvious as per their behavior.

They also can't explain any distinction or boundary between what's an acceptable identification and what isn't. For example, if I'm 48, but identify as 24, who's to say that's not true? They say you're just being an asshole when you bring up examples like that, but, in the end, what is the distinction that makes one assertion acceptable and another unacceptable? They won't admit it, but the answer is always: Because I said so.

Obligatory repost of the fact that "same-sex attraction" was the neutral term used by Foucauldian academics (of all people) to discuss the phenomenon in all sorts of scholarly articles in the 1990s and 2000s. It was considered the neutral term because it didn't carry the medical connotations of 'homosexual' or the current cultural associations of 'gay.'

Scholars -- including prominent Queer Theorists -- studying the history of sexuality would discuss how societies handled "same-sex attraction" in ancient Greece, or Rome, or Japan.

I had one minor peak a few years ago on the r/ainbow subreddit when someone was complaining about hearing the word 'trnny' (or can we use that on saidit?) on the radio. The thing is, it was in reference to someone talking about a *car's transmission*, not a trans person. I pointed out that words only have meaning in context and that among people who work on cars, tranny is common slang for transmission. It's also used for transformers in electronics. But no, this person said that *no one should use that word anymore in any context because it was what trans people were called when people were beating them to death.

That was my first moment of: These people are nuts. They think people are talking about them when they aren't even thinking about them at all.

Then, in 2018, I was doing some local volunteer working for the Democratic Party, including poll greeting, and ended up working alongside a very large transwoman. What occurred to me during this experience was there was nothing about this person that seemed like a woman at all. In manner, behavior, speech, body language, ways of interaction with others, he seemed like nothing other than a man in an ill-fitting dress. He would go up to potential voters, looming over them and obviously creeping them out. I don't think he was helping us at all. That's what first sent me over to start reading Gender Critical where I started learning about the treatment of lesbians, child transition, women's sports, etc....

How did not wanting to have sex with human beings from one community in particular become a legitimate preference?

I think my brain just short-circuited. How can someone write something this absurd and not realize the absurdity of it? How did we get to the point where someone not being sexually attracted to you is a civil rights issue? Is this the autism talking? Or is it more pathological narcissism? I mean, I know someone with Asperger's and have seen him struggle to understand other people's feelings, but this is some truly next-level emotional illiteracy at work.

In any event, JUST KEEP TALKING, SWEETHEART. You're only digging yourself a deeper hole, and not one I'm interested in getting anywhere near.

NO ONE IS ENTITLED TO HAVING OTHER PEOPLE WANTING TO HAVE SEX WITH YOU.

When I read things like this, I feel like we have really failed an entire generation, having allowed them the license to think that they're entitled to a world where no one ever disagrees with them, and anyone who does should be met with violence. It's a toddler's mentality.

I think non-binary has run its course as a trend. Everyone is tired of it. It's like some tired dance craze that now clears the dance floor, the Macarena of identities.

If you were wondering what it's like being inside the head of someone with a major Personality Disorder, look no further.

About 10 years ago, a woman got obsessed with a gay friend of mine and decided that they were destined to be together. She got to the point where she broke into his house while he was on vacation, stole all his email contacts, and emailed her sexual fantasies about him to everyone, including his family and business clients. It cost him and his partner thousands of dollars in legal expenses dealing with the fallout, including getting restraining order. She ended up doing a stint in a mental hospital and subsequently fled the state after violating the restraining order.

Fine. I'm a horrible cis white gay man. We're all evil, so evil in fact, that you shouldn't have any sexual interest in us whatsoever. Sleeping with us would be sleeping with the enemy. You should stay as far away from all of us as humanly possible. Deal?

GenderCritical was the big "Give me her head on a platter" gesture to the TRAs from Reddit management. It was the most notorious all over Reddit for resisting trans ideology.

I remember when I met "Margot," a transwoman friend of a friend. This was ~15 years ago. We were at a club where the lighting was low. After about five minutes, I turned to my friend and whispered in his ear, "Margot used to be a man, right?" He said, "Yes, but don't mention that you've noticed. She hates it when people notice."

Margot was 1) too tall, 2) had shoulders that were too big and wide, and 3) had an Adam's apple. And I'd say Margot actually passed pretty well.

To put it another way, I think they perceive the bond that lesbians have with lesbians and gay men have with gay men, and they realize that they are never really going to be able to experience that. From that perception comes a deep resentment and a desire to make us as miserable as they are.

No, we just asked to be treated like everyone else.

It's just like the story of the gay male group I've posted about. A bunch of trans-identified individuals maneuvered themselves into mod positions, and when they had achieved critical mass, they implemented new rules and shut down any discussion they didn't like.

It's their standard operating procedure now, just like organized crime running a protection racket.

GLAAD is in trouble for its Accountability Project that had JK Rowling, Abigail Shrier, Jesse Singal down for transphobia. GLAAD has actually been a pretty shitty organization for a long time. How do I know? I applied for a GLAAD dissertation fellowship. I didn't get it, but one of the members of their committee was so disgusted by the way the deliberations went that he contacted me privately and leaked to me why they turned me down. Even 20 years ago, it was all about who you were instead of how good your scholarship was. Basically, I didn't check the right identity boxes.

For the moment, we may have to content ourselves with being a reservoir of sanity in a world increasing going through a crazy period. I can't help but think that as TRAs become ever more arrogant and controlling, they are going to step on more and more toes and eventually trigger a major backlash. Sadly, some of it is probably going to come from the results of medical experimentation on kids. And there are bound to be more Jessica Yanivs.
