We all feel like we're going crazy, you're not alone.

If anything, all of this has really shown just how little women are respected. Perhaps that's why so many people are reacting so viciously when called out? People really really really do not like to be told they are being sexist, racist, classist, etc. It gets their minds churning and causes existential crises. So, they lash out instead of having to face the truth.

For me, one of the most upsetting aspects of this entire debate is how much respect I have lost for so many people who have fallen for this TRA nonsense. Not necessarily those who just parrot "TWAW" or whatever, but the ones who display full-on misogyny and homophobia as if it's the "right thing to do." Every single person who has used a misogynistic slur against JK Rowling or anyone defending her has outed themselves for who they truly are, and I will never forget.

When all of this is over - and it will be over eventually, it just might take thousands upon thousands of lawsuits to happen - do we really think any of these TRA warriors will apologize or even admit their fault? I think no, because they will still be selfish assholes who cannot admit they have ever done any wrong ever. My prediction is that they will claim they were tricked and are victims of the experts/doctors who told them all of this was safe and good, and likely they will also blame women (and LGB supporters) for creating an atmosphere of competition that obfuscated the real problem. Even though the "real problem" is exactly what women and LGB are trying to clarify.

It feels like a futile fight, and we all might end up as the nameless fighters forgotten by history, but we are fighting the good fight. Knowing that is the only thing that keeps me fighting.

God I hope it will be over sooner rather than later. They're going after women and LGB people because they're easy targets, but they're honestly going to hit a brick wall if they try to force this extremism on the world at large outside of twitter/LGBT groups. People like myself, who was until recently on board the TRA train, are waking up to how homophobic and dogmatic the TRA movement really is. The wide-scale and disturbing erasure of lesbian and gay identity is in full swing and it's so painful to watch.

Even if it is a futile fight, I won't give up the values I've learned from this. I'll always remember what the gay community used to be, how strong and proud we could be together before we were sabotaged by this movement. And I won't buy into an ideology just because some authoritarians masquerading as progressives are screaming that it's right.

What bothers me is the amount of gay people and lesbians who are still eating this T shit in the community. Sure, many might be afraid to disagree with anything for fear of backlash but the ones who actively work to accomodate this bullshit thinking they're being the "good guys" and "fighting for human rights etc" is honestly alarming. It's alarming how they don't see what's happening.

[–]SpatOuttheKoolaid 30 insightful - 1 fun30 insightful - 0 fun31 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Some of the ones that are still advocating for the T have been in long term serious relationships and have missed the radicalization over the last few years. They haven't been in the dating scene and haven't heard the constant "lesbians must accept girl dick" etc. I know people who are trans slactivists (aka not much beyond social media posting about those "damn terfs/JKR") that would absolutely be considered "terfs" if they knew what they were talking about, basically. Hell I was the same way until I attempted to get more involved in the community and found all the drama

[–]Ricky_Ticky 5 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

I was about to write exactly the same :) I considered myself trans ally by default and had no idea what's going on until recently

If I ever hear the term "genital preferences" out in the real world, I'm going to punch whoever dared say it.

Anyone know if the gay panic defense still works for gays?

Those who value truth have to be willing to lose friends and family. I'm not religious, but I think that is the meaning of Luke 14:26 (taking this as an allegory since Christ in the Greek is Logos - or logic/reason). That is very hard for anyone to do.

They're going after women and LGB people because they're easy targets

Exactly. They're going against easy targets. Here I thought mysoginy was ending, but nope, it's just as present as it was centuries ago.

I was still n the Reddit sub r/women. Several of the (obviously straight women) were commenting on how horrible the LGB drop the T sub was and they were so happy we were banned. All I could think is that they have zero solidarity with lesbians and are 100% pro trans. I don’t even know how we can help educate them without being call transphobic anymore. I feel like lesbians have been left all alone in this fight. I’m so thankful for women like J.K. Rowling having the guts to be truly pro-women.

[–]SpatOuttheKoolaid 22 insightful - 1 fun22 insightful - 0 fun23 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Meanwhile, r/actualwomen....deemed another "hate group" and cancelled. I'm so thankful that JKR is standing up--she's got a wide platform, "fuck you" money, and is in an industry that she can't be blacklisted from ever working again. As depressing as the backlash has been, there's also a lot of comments across platforms in support of her and more are peaking every day. I'm so thankful we have online communities, still, to gather, but the real world is very depressing when trying to find other lesbians (maybe even more so for those of us who live in liberal cities)

[–]lovelyles 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

They are taking the side of male persons. There is a certain alliance that straight women hold for the male population that they do not extend to their own sex. Trans women can argue that they don't have male privilege until their balls turn blue. Yet, this unwavering support for women identifying males is one example of that very privilege.

[–]chrysthefeminist 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

There is a certain alliance that straight women hold for the male population that they do not extend to their own sex.

Those fuckers. Sorry, but female responsibility to our own kind is the highest and most sacred. As to the male sex - we owe them nothing. That they act the opposite is why the world is such a shitpile.

[–]lovelyles 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

The straight, bisexual and pansexual population arguably.

[–]GayNotQueer 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

We gay men are in a similar boat. I think the women in our community are getting it worse, though, as heterosexual men who "identify" as women and as lesbians invade their spaces.

For some reason, across all cultures, the number of lesbians is about half of that of gay men; thusly, lesbian spaces get hit harder.

I think heterosexual men who identify as lesbian do show their male privilege by invading others' spaces -- to them, every space is their space.

[–]GConly 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

You should ask the straight women if they'd date a transman. Tell them they're transphobic if they won't sleep with them.

[–]GayNotQueer 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

And ask straight men if they'd date a transwoman with a penis? Or else they're transphobic and displaying a genital fetish.

Straight men and women haven't yet been attacked like we have been and are. Once they are, there will be an uproar.

Unfortunately, already, despots around the world are using trans madness as an excuse to clamp down on lesbigay rights. I'm all for trans rights, too, as long as they don't supersede others'.

[–]materialrealityplz 28 insightful - 1 fun28 insightful - 0 fun29 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yup, I've lost respect for people I really liked. I haven't been able to watch their content anymore, or read it I guess since this includes authors. (Seems big with young adult and fantasy authors) Someone I really liked retweeted Radcliffe's stupid shit, where he didn't even address what JKR actually said and just parroted 'transwomen are women' (doesn't even mention transmen, of course, lmao)

I was so disappointed. -_- So many people I liked turned out to be against women.

I'm hoping this will be like a vaccine for subsequent issues that reminds society why freedom of speech is so important (and that it is meaningless if it is not the freedom to offend). Most people appear to confuse what is familiar with what is true, or maybe I should say what is consensus with what is true, even though there are a ton of counter examples. That leaves them wide open to social manipulation. All those noxious ideologies from yesteryear that seem so outrageous? Now we get to see how that works.

Reasons why they hate her...

  1. She is a woman.

  2. She got herself out of poverty, abuse with her own two hands.

  3. She is a woman.

  4. She is a woman.

  5. She is also... a woman. A successful woman with talent, money, and even some authority when all is said and done.

She pissed off the Catholics with Harry Potter, and now she pissed off the TRAs with reason and common sense. I love her. I'd give her my firstborn, but I am never giving birth.

There is a special vitriol for women who speak out. John Cleese went terven recently and he hasn't faced the kind of backlash JK Rowling received when she just liked a few tweets or posted something innocuous in support of Maya Forstater and the existence of biological sex.

[–]insta 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Seriously, if people think Rowling is getting cancelled because of misogyny need to re-evaluate their worldview. They're cancelling her because she's not bending the knee. They tried the exact same thing with Stephen King over his diversity comments.

This is about being under the boot of a movement for political power, I'm not saying that the movement is about women's empowerment. But if you think this is all about "I hate women" you need to take off your feminist lens.

I ended up on one of her Twitter posts, linked through here, and was horrified to see an actress from Orange Is The New Black had written her an "OMG JUST STAHHHP!" type of comment. I don't participate in Twitter, but I clicked on the thingy and was glad to see many fans were telling her off (many fans were backing her up too) and there was another blue checkmark person in the comments (like a celebrity hair stylist, I think) and he was defending the actress too. (I'm sorry I'm explaining this in the style of a toddler.)

Anyway, what I'm seeing is that people are saying basically "How can you look at JK Rowling's posts and see transphobia?" and the Anti-JK Rowling people are saying "Yes, on face value it looks benign, but it's actually riddled with TERF dogwhistles and secret innuendos that somehow code into being anti-trans. Of course a normie like you wouldn't understand it, so you just need to trust us experts. Why would we lie to you?"

So a lot of people are trusting blindly.

Let me try to find that link...

EDIT - Okay, it's this one. The actress is Beth Dover. If you read though her whole thread, you kind of start getting the vibe I'm talking about. People are determined to read things into JK Rowling's posts that aren't actually there.

They are making up things and putting words in her mouth because ....she is making sense.

They (TRAs and some trans ppl) have basically told many people not to read a word of what she wrote "because it is all transphobic". And these ppl are just sheeps bc many are blindly following this. Because they know if ppl, at least the ones who are on the fence about this (and they are many), and even their own allies and TRAs buddies, read her essay, they will actually agree with her. Many even admitted to this lol

People are like "omg jk's tweets are so transphobic" and when you ask where are the "transphobic" things, they won't be able to explain to you. "Her essay is literally vile, transphobic shit", ok but where?? And then they'll do the mental gymnastics and emotional blackmail

And "undertones", they say it has "transphobic undertones". Imagine if LGB had only to worry for "homophobic undertones" instead for legislation that discriminates against us at the very least, and physical punishment endorsed by legislation and/or society at its worst (depending on the country you live in).

There are many trans people who do not consider what JKR said transphobic at all, but many celebrities were quick to dog pile on this. Rose of Dawn, for example, who is a prominent trans voice, released a video analyzing the situation and stated that JKR is not transphobic.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixCFuFvNgLw

[–]bellatrixbells 10 insightful - 1 fun10 insightful - 0 fun11 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

That's a great link, I hadn't heard Rose had made a video about this.
Blaire White also did, and in it she also mentions a couple of trans men standing by Rowling. In case you or anyone is interested : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyzZ3J6IG6s

Also, that's completely off topic, but can anyone tell me what is Rose's accent ? Irish ? I thought my English was "perfect" but I often have a very hard time understanding her. I can't seem to find info on Google.

I'm not British so my ears aren't as trained as someone from there, but to me Rose's accent sounds like she's originally from the north of England. Maybe from Yorkshire? Definitely doesn't sound Irish to me.

The absolute nonsense they come up with.

One that gets repeated all the time is that her synonym is in honour of that of a creep who did gay conversion therapy or something .

I've seen elaborate posts on how she is a fascist because the goblins have long noses and gold so they are jews. And some gay or trans character is ugly and thats why she is a bigot.

Like so much bullshit and it keeps getting upvoted on reddit and all i can think is no wonder trump is president and noone is taking the climate change or the pandemic seriously. 80 % of people are just very stupid or ignorant by choice.

After JKR's tweet in December, for a long time Twitter had as a headline 'news' story (on their search/news page), a tweet (well, a tweet essay) that pointed how insidiously transphobic what JKR said was. It was up there for days, when usually stuff gets changed pretty fast. Twitter's trans agenda is definitely not helping.

I can't deal with Twitter so I haven't been digging into it too much so if people do have valid proof/evidence I haven't seen it. But someone posted here a removeddit back-up of a thread from /r/trans today where the mods were going on a deletion spree of all comments that did not toe the party line. (I think the post here might have been removed? Can't find it anymore. But I managed to find the actual page from my browsing history.)

If you skim through it, there are several people asking basically "So what exactly did she say that was transphobic?" and no one can come up with a legit answer. One person was literally like... Hold on I want to quote it because it was so good:

https://www.removeddit.com/r/trans/comments/hqdrj1/jk_rowlings_handprints_are_defaced_with_red_paint/

This is in reply to someone saying "just watch this video uwu!"

I didn't watch it. I skipped through it and saw it was 100% someone else's opinions on how wrong she is. I don't CARE what someone else's interpretation of what she said is. I have eyes. I have ears. I have a brain. I am tasked with he responsibility to use my own senses and reason to decide what someone is actually saying based upon the words they actually said.

What I did do is read what she actually wrote, including her statement that she SUPPORTS gay and transgender rights. Yes, she stated tolerance for someone who chooses to not allow transgender people full rights--but that is being tolerant of ALL people's right to have their own opinions. Yes, she joked about the fact that someone was going so stupid as to make "people who menstruate" a new label to describe women.

Based upon her long history of advocating FOR gay/les/trans rights, and preaching tolerance for those specific groups--as well as tolerance to allow others to not accept those groups, I find her posts to be the opposite of how she is being portrayed.

If you are going to paint her as the devil, at least do your research first and see what she actually said.

I haven't read every single one of the comments, but if you feel up to the task, let me know if you find anything.

This is one of those cases where I think gendered expectations do come into play in the sense that women are supposed to be agreeable and compliant, looking out for any supposed underdog. A lot of SciFi/Fantasy readers imagine themselves as outcasts of one sort or another, and I think they saw Rowling as someone who understood them and wrote to them. Because she has stood up for her principles -- which they consider the wrong ones -- they can't forgive her, especially when we are in such a crazy cultural moment.

In contrast, Gervais has always been snarky and has a very different fan base.

As to how it got this bad, most cultural analysts are in agreement: Social media in general and Twitter in particular. It is having a corrosive effect on our ability to function as a society where people with different points of view can live together without constantly being at war. People now see this constant bickering as normal.

[–]Jamiethiel2018 30 insightful - 1 fun30 insightful - 0 fun31 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Absolutely anything but complete capitulation is transphobic. The dogwhistles they're suggesting are there: JKR doesn't think TWAW. JKR doesn't want the age of informed consent to drop even lower, so she "erases" young trans people.

As with other termonology, they're using dogwhistle wrong & obscuring the issue. Women have been saying (no one is hearing us/them due to twitter, facebook & google search practices) that Transwomen are not women. It's a perfectly rational comment. They called the Oxford Dictionary definition posted on a billboard a dogwhistle. It really isn't, we're out an out saying transwomen are transwomen, a subset of men. For some inexplicable reason, those in control of media go, oh, ok they're transphobic while I'm almost certain they agree that humans born male can't actually change sex (although some indoctrination is so complete I wonder about others.)

People agree with us, they just think it's rude and heartless to point things out to the most oppressed (well funded, well connect astroturf) among us. This response is typical, for how a woman is treated. With the exception of Glinner & perhaps Jonny Best, men do not get rape & death threats, calls to their employer, or doxxed.

Dig into how Meghan Murphy's treatment, or Posie Parker's. A notable exception is Fair Cop, where a man got a talking to by UK police for liking a limeric God help me, I missed a good portion of this too. Lesbians ever since Michfest, have been trying to get our attention.

You're absolutely right, JKR said nothing transphobic, but as she can't easily be cancelled, she's a major threat to the house of cards that supports their whole message. Sunlight is their worst nightmare. And when people realize they've been lied to and manipulated (those that don't double down, like the people who won't even read JKR's message) there will be hell to pay. 3 guesses who'll be to blame. Edit: typos.

I don't know what to make of it, but she's far from the first, she's just one of the more famous ones. Even youtube is now recommending me interviews with women who were bullied out of universities for not toeing the trans-line, and this was years ago.

If anything, it's sad that it took a children's book author to bring some light to it, and even then it's more visible on twitter than where it matters; everywhere else.

She's far from the first one, but quite possibly the first one famous and established enough not to be fired, dismissed, or swept aside, and who absolutely refuses to apologise and beg trans-forgiveness when slammed.

[–]bellatrixbells 23 insightful - 1 fun23 insightful - 0 fun24 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

The simple answer is that it seems a lot of men have repressed a lot of misogyny from the past century and losing their all powerful status : Rowling is getting slammed while Gervais can get away for the simple reason that she's woman and he's a man.

I've realized lately that the whole issue which is at hand here is that men/males have always gotten to define everything, from their point of view, and that includes women. They always described us and studied us but they never thought to ask us how we would define ourselves. This whole issue right now seems to be that trans women, who are male, and their men allies, cannot seem to wrap it around their head that they CANNOT completely redefine what we are in order to appropriate our realities.

Think of someone like Contrapoints, who makes YT videos of over one hour to explain what it means to be a woman. It doesn't seem like he ever stops to think that maybe, just maybe, it would be nice if he spoke to at least a few of us about it, but no. He gets to define what a woman is because he thinks he knows because he is convinced of being one.

YT just sent me to a video of some gay man who "explained/proved", that JK was transphobic. His entire argument was centered around the fact that refusing to use "preferred pronouns" and "deciding which sex a person is" (I'm serious) is effectively a disrespect of that person's dignity and existence.

Last week I had someone who describes themselves as a trans woman tell me that he was a woman in the same way I was and that he knew he was for the same reasons I do (first of all, how are you assuming for what reasons I know I'm a woman ?). I asked that he define what a woman is, and he flat-out refused since doing so would be justifying his existence to me. He is asking that I, a woman, acknowledge that he is a woman, even though he is a male, and that he didn't have to justify his demand. I should just do it, otherwise I'm denying his existence.

A common point of all those people is that they are all males who not only seem incapable of accepting that women should be able to define themselves and decide who gets to "join the club", for lack of a better expression. But they are also completely ignoring the fact that to attempt to define us without asking our opinion. The fact that demanding we let them into our spaces and force ourselves to doublethink and doublespeak. The fact that they're basically saying the need for validation of trans males is more important than all of those things are for half of humanity... is pretty much an assault on our dignity and on our existence. Because if a woman is just some sort of nebulous concept that can be redefined at the whims of males, then what are we ? Women do not exist.

JK committed the atrocious crime of stating in public that we shouldn't lose everything for refusing to be defined by men/males and let those males appropriate our very existence. Problem is she's a woman.

Sorry, that was kind of GC.

Yes, I've been thinking very much along these lines lately.

After all, doesn't the whole "transwoman" phenomenon require us to define "woman" as... a feeling in a man's head?

And how terrifying is that? (To say nothing of insulting. Or depressing.) Especially since women themselves are being expected to sign on to this proposition. With enthusiasm, no less! Or else! Can you imagine that happening with any other group? "Black people: you're just a feeling in white people's heads! OK? Now get out there and spread the word! Unless you wanna be CANCELED, bigot!"

It's as though we're less real than "transwomen", honestly. Because if "woman" = whatever men think she is... then how can we possibly measure up to some dude's ladyfeelz? Our objective existence will always get in the way, whereas HIS "inner woman" is, by definition, a 100% pure product of the male mind. And that's the standard, apparently. Woman as imagined by men.

This is woke-misogyny, I guess. Where, as opposed to men just saying, "I'm better than you", they now put on lipstick and a skirt-that-goes-spinny and also say, "I'm a better WOMAN than you."

Very well put. And yes, I agree, it is terrifying. 😢

I'm not that surprised, to be honest. Look back in history, and remember how witch-burning was a thing, it was widespread, and it lasted for a lot of time. Look at nazism, too: millions of people suddenly becoming evil. The only thing we can do is show her our support!

I admire her bravery. It cannot be easy as a domestic violence and sexual assault survivor to receive death and rape threats every day.

The more I think about the way she has been treated for expressing an opinion and genuine concerns, the angrier I get. Show me where she said anything as offensive and cruel as the things people are saying to/about her. I just hope she has the mental strength to get through all this complete BS. All the people who constantly promote mental health couldn't give two fucks about the mental health of someone who has a differing opinion. They're all for women standing up and speaking out until they say something they disagree with. And she didn't even say anything offensive! Gah!!

I personally had no idea this shit was percolating until I got on Reddit. I was in a long relationship, had a small group of friends that were couples, raised my kids to adulthood, worked full time and only went on Twitter for politics only (still do). I haven’t been to Pride since the late 1980’s. I’m second wave, knew we had a hell of a way to go to gain any equality with men but felt that progress had been made. I never understood why the T was tacked onto the Pride flag but life was too busy to really pay attention.

I am floored on a daily basis that men decided that they were women (not drag like back in the day when I came out), act like assholes, made up their very own science and statistics and the woke went along with it and still do. The sheer ugliness of their vitriol is breathtaking. No limits, no boundaries. They act out with impunity.

I actually feel pretty horrible about it. I finally recovered from my last relationship and had thought about dating again. I was thinking that surely, there must be another older lesbian (butch please) recovered from hers (or finished grieving the death of her partner) and might be ready to date a still nice-looking femme (I think so). My friends are all coupled (and their friends). Now I read that dating apps that are supposed to be for lesbians, ban women if they say they won’t date TIMS.

Honestly between the TRAS, TIMS, TIFS and Trump, my head feels like it will explode.

My dear lesbian friend, I feel you. Take 3 deep breaths as needed. Don't let them win -- just go on the dating apps and don't disclose you don't want "girl dick". When someone tells you they are trans, just after a few more sentences write that you aren't feeling any chemistry between you and them. I end with "I wish the future brings you everything you deserve" -- hahahaha . . . evil grin. No, really, karma is real and they will get theirs.

Go live your life. There are still lots of nice (butch) women out there waiting to meet you. Take heart. :)

The most sacred rule of 2020 is never upset the transsexuals.

I used to be one of the people annoyed that she didn't explicitly include any LGB characters in her books, despite claiming that Dumbledore was gay. Now I'll forever be thankful to her for standing up for us and making TRAs show their true colors for everyone to see.

Speaking of ricky gervais, does anyone remember when he made fun of JY for wanting to go to the OBGYN? Said something to the effect of "what are they checking for, cancer in your bollocks?" Yeah ~i wonder why~ he gets to say that but jk can't be reasonably concerned about women's safety.

Fucking exactly, this is what I'm talking about. How does he get away with saying blatantly inflammatory things like that while Rowling has the entire world crashing around her for having a nuanced and wary approach to gender politics?

I suspect Gervias was pressured to shut up or he couldn't host the Oscars. Before he hosted, he used to make a lot of these comments but he's stopped. IDK he could just be busy, but I wonder!

The worst part is the media is just straight-up lying about easily verifiable facts and events. They refuse to tell the truth for ideological reasons. You could barely cook up a form of psychological warfare on purpose that's more destructive than trans ideology. I no longer trust or respect people who go along with it. I'm still trying to be sympathetic to them, but the longer this lasts, the more extreme they get, the harder that is.

I think it's two fold. Firstly she's a woman and secondly all these adult babies treat the HP books like some kind of bible (which tbh I think she's indulged a bit too much for anyones good in the past).

Why people who should otherwise know better are going along with it I'm not sure. It's all a bit Stalinist.

It isn’t hate to speak the TRUTH.

Words are NEVER violence.

Phobias are IRRATIONAL fears.

Material reality is IMMUNE to gaslighting.

The GNOSTICS did it first.

It's insane how people don't even have the stance of, "I disagree with JKR, but she doesn't deserve the abuse she's getting". But in order to have that view, I guess they would actually have to read the essay.
