Obligatory repost of the fact that "same-sex attraction" was the neutral term used by Foucauldian academics (of all people) to discuss the phenomenon in all sorts of scholarly articles in the 1990s and 2000s. It was considered the neutral term because it didn't carry the medical connotations of 'homosexual' or the current cultural associations of 'gay.'

Scholars -- including prominent Queer Theorists -- studying the history of sexuality would discuss how societies handled "same-sex attraction" in ancient Greece, or Rome, or Japan.

This guy talking about how no one used the term 'same-sex attraction' is just an illiterate little shit.

Exactly. Same-sex attraction/relationships is a useful term because it separates modern identities from the historical reality that lacked the modern sexual identities that have only been around for the last 140 years.

Further it provides a distinction between same sex behaviour mostly caused by social institutions and socialisation (an example would be a society that has a coming-of-age cultural practice and tradition where boys have to perform oral sex on the men in the village on turning 13) and egalitarian homosexuality caused by an individual's innate sexual orientation. The words gay and homosexual are appropriate for the latter but completely inappropriate for the former phenomenon.

Bit of a different perspective, but I’m german and found this interesting.

For the absolute majority of my life anything gay (schwul) / lesbian (lesbisch) was referred to as „gleichgeschlechtlich“ / “homosexuell”, which translate to „same sex“.

There’s no translation for „gender“.

So we also didn’t talk about „same-gender“ for a long time as this is literally just an import from english speaking countries with all the ideological framework connected to it by now. So for the first years of my out life I’ve never heard anyone refer to my sexuality and political and legal decisions regarding it, as anything other than the translation of “same-sex”.

But now I’m supposed to incorporate something into my language and understanding, that doesn’t even have a translation.

Good job adapting the American cultural imperialism so quickly! You’ll have it down in no time! /s

People referred to homosexuality as same-sex attraction all the time. Especially when the topics of legality or marriage came up.

He is right that no one was going around saying adult human male/female before now, but that's because it was universally understood that that was what man and woman meant and no one needed to elaborate further .

Bruh “same sex attracted,” “same sex marriage” clearly you weren’t an “ally” then or “in the middle pf the fight” cause those have always been key terms in the LGB movement while I’ve been alive.

Edit: fixed wording that implied I’d died.

Are gay marriage and same-sex marriage the same thing? Would these two men be allowed to date, have sex and get married before same-sex marriage was legal? If so, they are not a gay couple, they're atleast two bisexuals in a heterosexual relationship having heterosex, not homosexuals. I don't understand the animosity towards "same-sex", it's an accurate label that includes all those who belong under the LGB umbrella and it's gender-neutral, the wokerati should love it.

Gay just means same-sex attracted person (usually man) and lesbian just means same-sex attracted woman and bisexual is same-sex and opposite-sex attracted. These people make everything so unnecessarily complicated 🙄

This guy is prime proof of the efficacy of trojan horse maneuvers on modern day social movements.

As long as I was alive and recall, I believe that they did call gay people same-sex attracted. Only heard the same-gender crap when I was a teenager. Preteen and older child, I did hear same-sex more.

Whose fault is it that words like gay, man, or woman no longer have useful meanings? The verbosity of adult human _______ is absolutely necessary as a result. Referring to groups of people based on how they feel about themselves generally serves no purpose.

I was referring to myself as same sex attracted before I knew that transgenderism existed

Same sex attracted is a loaded term that I have mixed feelings about, mostly due to nasty feminists, but it has always been in use to my knowledge. It certainly was at least in the 80s. It's a descriptive term.
