I have been tweeting about surgeries on teens in the vein of Abigail Shrier's book and so far two people have unfollowed me and made sure to tell me I am transphobic without any discussion of what my actual views are or why. I've decided not to unfollow anyone for now because I don't really give a shit, and one woman spent all morning subtweeting me, which was kind of entertaining. If you're trans anything and you're just living your life, or you're a supporter, fine, I don't actually really care. But this seems to be an extremely touchy topic for some people who I have been tweeting with for over 10 years. Wow. Instant policing and shooshing. Meanwhile my more resilient friends are asking me questions or just ignoring me. Others have come out to me as undercover GC like I used to be.

The 90s and 00s were ok for gay, where I lived (West coast US). I do remember that a lot of tv shows had a token gay character who had already come out, The L Word appeared, Logo TV happened and it was kind of trendy. Pride was fun. I had friends who thought they were gay, or "dabbled" and I think for some it was a welcome shield against, you know, teen boys or older predatory men. There were jokes about women being LUGs (lesbian until graduation). And you know what, I don't think it seriously hurt most people. There were no hormones, only a lot of Indigo Girl and Ani DeFranco. It probably introduced some women to feminism and a feeling of safety and solidarity.

I think things will swing again. I'm sorry, it must be very lonely. My daughter is also "the only lesbian in the village" and is looking forward to college.

I know I'm one of the "old woman yells at cloud" types here, but I remember in the 90s how it was suddenly cool for men to wear nail polish and eye makeup. I loved it! I know it goes back to punk/Bowie and there's been historical periods where men are the fancy dandies. It's such a bummer that boys and men can't just do this now without making some kind of identity politics declaration.

I was just thinking about how when my daughters were little in the aughts kid clothes started getting crazy gendered. There's a ton of pictures of me in the 1970s and 80s wearing red, plaid, plain t-shirts. I tried to give my girls that option but once they got to be school aged my older daughter got extremely pink and princessy, I think in part from peer comments and conformity. My youngest stayed in funkier stuff from the thrift store (I remember she had this badass camo T with a scorpion on it. Aaaaand she's a lesbian now, lol.

Point being I wonder if these super hard splits in culture are affecting young trans/NB people now.

Hmm interesting. I see some the comments are telling OP that they shouldn't have gone "at this point in their transition process." I have never met/befriended a gay man who wasn't super all about that D, so I don't know what point in one's transition you should infiltrate gay male space.

Also, this post tugs at my heartstrings, tbh. Crying in the bathroom is never fun, but I hope this person LEARNS from that. If the situation was reversed, I'm sure a Tim would have done all that tone deaf overconfident male shit that lesbians just live to experience, lmao.

Ok devil's advocate--is he a bad teacher? I have in the past worked with Tims and Tifs and currently work with a Tim. I don't really care in professional contexts. I also work with people who are white supremacists, and people who think that covid-19 was made in a lab. I don't discuss those things with them.

If he was a decent teacher, who cares. If we're at a party and I can hear he's, say, telling lesbians they're missing out on ladydick, we're going to have words. We're surrounded by different people in this world. Most of them keep it secret, and I can't change their minds, just like they can't change mine.

Ooh this person from the comments is SO close to getting it:

What they don't realize about teaching their kids being transgender is a "trend": if anything it'll encourage kids to "try" being trans since it's just a "trend". They're inadvertently being the 'brainwashing kids' influence they're so terrified of, solely because they're so obsessed with proving trans = bad.

This transtrender shit reminds me of DARE back in the day. DARE didn't make drugs sound dangerous or something to be avoided, it looked fun as hell, we got a day off school to look at all the different types of drugs and I can't think of a single person that was ever dissuaded by DARE. In fact it usually went the other way around- hilariously it felt more like being DARE'd to try drugs.

Yes poodle and Mermaids/genderbread curriculums is the new DARE and will pass out of fashion as well. They refuse to look at the numbers Shrier found in terms of it being a craze. Also I know some of us can say this til we're blue in the face, but I don't hate trans people. Lordy.

I love what she said on Joe Rogan... If trans people have "always" been secretly lurking for their moment to come out... Where are the 40, 50, 60+ year old women becoming Tifs at these same numbers? Are young people really that much "braver" than older women?

I don't say this very often, and who am I to give out cookies, BUT. Sincerely, thank you for listening. Your post makes me definitely open to hearing you.

I really think this acceptance is a hangover from gay rights being legislated so spectacularly. Young people now grew up during that period and saw how positive gay marriage has been in the sense that, yes, gay people are just regular people living their lives.

What is so strange to me now is the feeling I get that women are being punched down to. I know some gay men don't care for women in general and that's fine. But I haven't seen massive organized hate coming into feminist spaces or at celebrities from queer people, blown up on social media and the news for all to see. I have never felt like gay people wanted to displace my sex. That doesn't even make sense to me.

OP it's interesting that you mention your workplace. I'm blue collar, and work with very few women. I live in a liberal West coast city and I never hear guys I work with even clocking what's going on wrt the, uh, terfwars. I do have one co-worker who has a daughter who's transitioned recently, but he only seems to talk to me about the situation since I ooze liberal feminist. He wonders if it's "just a phase" since he's heard that's possible. I just listen, since I'm not there. My kid's got a lot of new fangled Zoomer things happening, but she's sure she's also an old school lesbian. 😄

You deserve a good life. Don’t be scared to live it.

Hi instantlymidnight, I can't imagine what you're going through but I'm glad you're here. It must be really scary and hard to have your worldview shaken like this.

I don't have detrans specific resources for you, but as person who has worked through trauma, please try to be gentle with yourself and your reactions right now. From your post this all sounds super new. Reading, questioning, and understanding is important, but don't forget to step away and have some downtime to care for yourself. Exercise/walk if you can, watch or read something fluffy, write about your feelings, and talk to supportive people IRL.

It's intense, but it was helpful for me to read "The Body Keeps the Score." I was turned off a bit at first because it starts with the author's work with male veterans, but it's good for understanding trauma and there's a lot of resources in the back about how to work towards recovery.

This is kind of a little thing, but I was surprised how much it helped me when I was working through PTSD and feeling overwhelmed: https://yogainternational.com/article/view/soothe-your-nervous-system-with-2-to-1-breathing

It's good for anyone who is experiencing stress and overwhelm from their thoughts to calm your body from doing that fun fight or flight stuff.

I don't know if this is accessible to you or desirable, but psychology today magazine has an online search/filtering function and many providers are all set up to do online counseling now.

Anyway, I'm very glad you're here. You're important and your voice is important.

It's so fascinating to me for this craze seems to be a tangled web of internet niches, gay pride (yay, but here comes trans people under that umbrella), and anti bullying rhetoric in schools. These are all good things on their own, but they seem to have been the catalyst, but trans expression seems to only be the symptom.

I wonder what will happen after the backlash. Kids with true lifelong gender dysphoria will probably go back to being ignored. I admire that parents are trying to be supportive, but they're obviously in for a rude awakening.

Girls in my kid's high school are on T now, and many are non binary. I'm not patting myself on the back at all but I've raised my kid to be media skeptical and kind of everything skeptical, heh. We talk about the sucky and good parts of being a woman and she's not transitioning as far as I can tell. I was so disappointed when I encouraged her to GET OUT into the exciting world, and we discovered that none of her friends left their houses and I was negligent for teaching her to ride the city bus, lol.

I'm hoping gendertrender crap is just that, a trend. Entertainment from this period will immediately announce c. 2020!! because of the trans characters wedged in willy nilly. Content creators often respond to what's happening in the world but I can't imagine revisiting some of the art and entertainment from this time because it's going to feel very dystopian.

I just watched She-Ra with my daughter and it was delightfully gay and then BAM, enby lizard in season 4 from out of nowhere. The voice actor turned in a very campy vocal performance that didn't really fit with the rest of the world, and the character was attired in something that felt kind of Rocky Horror/strip club. No other trans characters were portrayed in this world up to that point, but all the characters knew the lizard was they/them without that conversation happening onscreen. Check out The Coddling of the American Mind if you have time. It gets at the three great untruths of our time, one of which is: "bad idea=bad person."

Many people are completely unreceptive to even hearing ideas now. I see all the misinformation about Rowling and her new book. People have been trained to form an opinion based on a headline.

Hey. 25 years ago I wanted to bail out of being a woman too. Fortunately no one was around to offer to cut my tits off or cinch me up in the equivalent of a Victorian corset. Do you hear how I'm saying this? This shit is medieval. Do not do this to yourself.

Being a woman sucks a lot of the time. Ask yourself WHY? What makes it suck? Is it YOU? NO. You're fine. Society is messed up. It sinks into your head like odorless gas, all the messaging about what men and women are supposed to be. Being gay is not easy. Being a woman is not easy.

Give it time and you'll get used to it. You can go into the world and meet some people who are like you, and you'll feel better. You'll get older and I promise you you will feel less like you're under a microscope. You can be any kind of woman you want. You don't have to mutilate yourself.

People almost never regret the marriage they called off that they had a bad feeling about, the face tattoo they didn't get, the time they didn't drive drunk. It's ok that you want to be in a little cave right now away from the pressure you feel. Just give yourself time and see who you actually are. You can always make changes later.

This is going to sound smurfy, but it's normal to fucking YEARN at your age. It's part of growing up. You're supposed to want changes, to grow into someone different. It feels horrible, like you want to scream and explode. Use that energy to improve yourself if you can. Read, learn an art or craft, talk to different people, plan your future. Don't plan elective surgery.

Do yourself the favor of checking out detrans stories. Check out Irreversible Damage if you can get it. A lot of women have done things to themselves that they cannot come back from. Just give yourself time to finish baking, ok?

[–]fuckingsealions 20 insightful - 1 fun20 insightful - 0 fun21 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Your approach sounds great. My daughter is in a small high school program surrounded by trans and non binary teens and I've let her know this issue did not exist in schools 20 years ago. I asked her if she'd had trans speakers in middle school, because I've learned about the school programming trend of bringing in tra speakers without telling parents, and it turned out she had! A parent of a trans kid came in to speak, but it was voluntary and only she and her friend went from her class. We've talked about how rare gender dysphoria actually is, and how it starts very young. She has a classmate who she's known back to grade school who was a typical girly girl who is transitioning now, so she can see the contrast. I've told her about how there was an explosion in exorcisms in the 70s, about the waves of anorexia, self-harm, even the phenomenon of boy bands. I've told her about changes I've gone through and how much I changed over the course of adolescence and how glad I was that I didn't make permanent decisions (she thinks some of my old ideas don't sound like me at all, and she's right). The difference now, of course, is that this trend is somehow leading doctors to dispense medication to completely change your body and parents are being told they have to go along with it or your child will commit suicide. Yikes! I'm old enough to remember when parents made super unpopular decisions (wrt their teen) to prevent their child from harming themselves. I think it's helped her to have some history and perspective beyond YouTubers who will coach kids on how to transition and to "sneak" them binders. Christ. I also told her that there's women's colleges and she was excited to learn that and is now researching them. 😄

I've been casually noticing how hard it is for men to remember women's names in a lot of situations. This is a really random example, but during quarantine my household started watching early seasons of Survivor. The male contestants always knew the names of the other men pretty quickly, but the women were often nicknamed, like "Blondie" or "Barbie" and they would fumble for their actual names.

I also saw some interesting poll results. They surveyed 1000 people about who they recognized from pictures of older tv shows, both the actors' names and the characters' names. Men were almost always the top recognized people, even if a woman was the actual star of the show. After a while the results became predictable. It's annoying.

I don't think "women" is outmoded, racist, or a slur. It's what I am. Groups get to decide what they're called. Tiny groups don't get to dictate what we call ourselves.

As an example, some Hawaiians call non-Hawaiians or white people "Haoles." It's a term used by a small group of people for an outgroup, and I'm sure it's culturally and practically useful to them. I'm not going to adopt this term for myself to avoid hurting the feelings of Hawaiians, and I don't think they'd ask me to.

Keep talking and reading. I know we are moving backwards right now. I remember when I was a kid learning that Shakespeare's works were originally all performed by men and thinking how stupid that was and how women would never be shut out of public life like that again. And here we are.

I wish it was not an election year in the US, and we didn't have all of the international problems we're having, because it feels too easy for people to think we're crazy and just move on. I don't think the trans industrial complex could have taken hold this hard outside of an environment of chaos like we have now.

Ok this is where I admit it gets tricky and vague. I cannot bring myself to dissect a person with lines and arrows a la Perez Hilton or those plastic surgery sites (and I know you didn't ask for that), but I think there's something in the forehead/brow, and kind of a blockiness overall in the face. https://soapdirt.com/i-am-jazz-spoilers-jazz-jennings-scary-post-surgery-pop-second-operation-needed-asap/

Jazz simply looks like and reminds me of a lot of boys I've known who do present as masculine/male. I see a lot of it in candid photos as opposed to posed pictures.

I'm not trying to slam Jazz's appearance. This is a very feminine-presenting person, and I don't think everyone should get to one side like you're Barbie or Ken. But something pops for me, even in earlier-transitioning youth (like the Sports Illustrated model). It's ok, it is what it is. It's just that subtle thing.

I googled Valentina Sampao last night, and similar issue. Pap photos on the street or runway--looks male. Posed modeling photos--very female. Again it's in the brow and blocky face. A lot of men causally frown in a way that intensifies it and makes them look angrier than a woman intentionally frowning imo because of that heavy brow.

Ok, I do not have time to research this atm, but there seems to be nuance to what this might affect. Comment from thread:

Channelbot_Reborn 4h You need to know what you're signing before you do it.

The instructions provided are for leaving comments in favor of repealing Section 230. This isn't about Reddit specifically.

Section 230 protects websites from being held accountable for content their users upload. Without this protection, sites like 4chan basically can't function. Any malicious party could find a way to jam child porn through and get any site taken down.

Reddit is a shithole, but repealing section 230 would be a death blow to basically any platform that allows users to upload their own content, except ones run by companies with billions in the bank. Repealing 230 would kill competition for sites like Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, and so on.

Reddit has serious internal issues but this isn't the solution.
