What absolute tosh. I did find one correct sentence in amongst all the bollocks:

the major threat to women, straight or not, cis- or not, always was and still is straight men

I’m not sure why she thinks them putting on a wig changes that, though.

Guardian article

I have never actually heard of, or read of, let alone seen, an incident in which a trans woman or girl somehow caused unpleasantness in a women’s room

Except we know there are plenty of examples.

The attempted rape of that little girl in the ladies by Dolatowski... That guy who said he was a TIM that assaulted the women in that Canadian shelter... The prison rapes and sexual assaults... That guy who got into the homeless shelter where the women were forced to group shower with him... The guy who decided to try to take a shower with a teenage girl sports team in Florida... That TIM in Evergreen who exposed his dick to different young women on different occasions non the sauna and who then sued because he was removed from it..

This article also steers away from the criminal offending rates of transwomen, which are the same as they are for any other group of men.

How many women were taken seriously when they did complain? It’s like saying rape statistics are a lie because of the low conviction rate. The author is such a handmaiden.

Is there a new thisneverhappens saidit here? If not, it should get started again

I have no idea. Did anyone go and archive the reddit sub?

She can write that trans women pose no threat for so-called cis (sic) women because she clearly hasn't done any research on it. Her forte is the optimistic and breezy style and instant intuitive observations. It's not the kind of jaw-breakingly boring work that one must do to understand that 'cis' does NOT mean just a woman who is not trans, but a woman who has a special woman essence in her mind which just happens to match her body. So all 'cis' women are expected to be completely happy to see the female body turned gender-neutral because their identity is that essence in their heads, nothing more.

She clearly has not thought through what will happen when we have no acceptable way of talking about female people. Because if we can't name the people who are of female sex, then we can't define the targets of sexism etc.

But yes, she certainly has not even Googled the topic of incidents in toilets/bathrooms. I have quite a few in my files.

I think she bases her arguments on some very nice trans folks she has known in her life and not on what today's trans activists are demanding. But what matters for women's rights is the latter, sadly, and not the fact that many trans people are good people.

I myself have never been stabbed, and I do not know anyone who has. Therefore, knife crime is not a thing.

It’s so intellectually lazy. “I live in a bubble since I refuse to notice it in my bubble, it must not exist.”

This was my exact takeaway from this too lol. Such laziness and naivete

The Guardian is nothing more than a propaganda machine now.

With articles like this one, no wonder they’re struggling financially.

Probably focusing on the wrong thing here, but does it make anyone else kind of uncomfortable that a straight woman is throwing the word 'queer' around willy-nilly? I don't care how 'reclaimed' you believe it to be.

[–]marmalade 20 insightful - 1 fun20 insightful - 0 fun21 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

That's how they lump us all together, don't you know? Straights retain their sole identity, but now everyone else is 'queer.' No more lesbians or gay men, only queer people. Not erasure or playing into some kind of inherent prejuidice against us all at all. Nope.

[–]MarkTwainiac 21 insightful - 3 fun21 insightful - 2 fun22 insightful - 3 fun -  (3 children)

But so many of those who call themselves queer now are straight people who see themselves as queer cuz they have an edgy haircut, tattoos, facial piercings; are into kink; don't dress/present or behave as ultra-extreme sex stereotypes representing polar opposites of masculinity and femininity (rather they dress and behave in a more mixed-bag way like most human beings do); and they ascribe to genderist ideology and queer theory.

On Google, type "queer heterosexuality meaning" into the search bar and more than 2.8 million results come up.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queer_heterosexuality

OMG so homosexuality is just another thing to LARP at this point? It's another "costume"? Does this all come back to the internet and this "need" to say "look at me, look at me, I'm special!" and people used to outgrow that but now with the internet you can do it your whole life?

[–]Complicated-Spirit 1 insightful - 3 fun1 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

Abso-fuckin’-lutely. Ever had a dream that involved having sex with someone you’re not married to, in a place other than your own bedroom? Ever worn trousers to your office job, if you’re a woman, or let your hair grow a bit long, if you’re a man? Congratulations, you’re queer.

[–]marmalade 12 insightful - 1 fun12 insightful - 0 fun13 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yep, they want in on the insults they sling so they can claim to be victims when we're the ones being marginalized. Same playbook, slightly different targets.

[–]fuckingsealions 17 insightful - 1 fun17 insightful - 0 fun18 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

What do any of these arguably umbrella terms even mean to the authors? That's what I struggle with. I gained so much respect for Meghan Murphy when she defined her terms at the beginning of her famous uni debate.

[–]jkfinn 28 insightful - 2 fun28 insightful - 1 fun29 insightful - 2 fun -  (5 children)

Reactionary bullshit from a known feminist journalist whose articles are often reproduced for discussion on “rad fem” (one has to wonder) sites. I cringe right off the bat by her addressing GC critics as “Ladies” and at her incredibly romanticized view of San Francisco (porn factories, sex positive, & super rich) as a bastion of civil liberties. As I read along (who can finish this supreme whitewash) what comes back to me like a bolt is the pro-sex movement which split the second wave. These women were also known feminists (most in the performance arts and/or journalists etc) and had names like Erika Lust, Annie Sprinkle, Pat(rick) Califia, or their own famed names like Gayle Rubin and Ellen Willis. But here instead of embracing pornographers and pimps, Solnit embraces men as representative women and feminists, praiseworthy gender rebels, and an even as a more oppressed wing of the category “women.”

[–]SameOldBS 15 insightful - 2 fun15 insightful - 1 fun16 insightful - 2 fun -  (4 children)

I'm ashamed to say I used to rate Solnit. Now she can fuck the fuck off to the same place Naomi Wolf crawled out from.

[–]PassionateIntensity 14 insightful - 2 fun14 insightful - 1 fun15 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

It's depressing when women you thought were smart have their head up their ass. Solnit lives in a bubble and 1)thinks transwomen are gay men, 2)is in denial so she doesn't have to acknowledge her friends are abusing their children.

[–]suzyquattrosshoes 5 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

Oh what happened with Naomi Wolf? I only read her Beauty Myth.

[–]MarkTwainiac 13 insightful - 3 fun13 insightful - 2 fun14 insightful - 3 fun -  (1 child)

Did you read the BM in its original version - where she said right at the start that 150,000 girls/women die of anorexia each year? At the time, it prompted howls cuz the real number was more like 50-60 per annum. The error was corrected in later versions.

Her most recent book had to be pulled off the market because it was based entirely on a mistaken premise that she got from totally misreading & historical court documents and not checking the definition of the terms used in them. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/06/05/books/review-outrages-naomi-wolf.html

https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-50153743

Recently, she's gone full TRA, saying on Twitter that TWAW and the most oppressed; TERFs are evil; The Beauty Myth "wasn't just for uteri havers" and her book "Vagina" wasn't just for people with female vaginas - it was for the menz too.

[–]suzyquattrosshoes 5 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Gobsmacked.

I read the BM in the early 90s, haven’t since. I think probably it was the original! I remember thinking (about the book overall), “superficial, we all know this (much of it), but good to have out there”.

Vagina for men... wow. No integrity at all. Unless she’s terrified which is possible.

Just this last Halloween this happened where I live! The majority of the girls kicked him out! He tried to get into one of the stalls with another woman, he did not know, kid you not! All of the women, mostly younger, were screaming and shoving him out of there.

Their bubbles are hermetically sealed. To be fair, the 'liberal' media doesn't report these either.

[–][deleted] 19 insightful - 2 fun19 insightful - 1 fun20 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

I cannot believe the drivel this handmaiden is spouting. Maybe this is the female version of toxic masculinity. She really thinks women being nice to males is more important than advocating for our sex.

[–]dandeliondynasty 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Exactly. I had the weirdest conversation with a lib fem friend where I asked “shouldnt all the women you know, including the assault survivors, feel safe in a bathroom or locker room?” And she just said it was demeaning and invalidating to exclude any self-id trans women do we couldn’t regulate access.

I finally read the thing carefully. It is an embarrassing piece, stitched together with a giant needle and wonky stitches. Solnit makes so many elementary mistakes, states her personal beliefs as statistical facts and so on.

She confuses biological sex with gender

She makes a complete mess of her attempt to explain what might be sex or might be gender but isn't either because she carefully avoided looking for it . She tells us that detransitioning is very rare when nobody can actually say anything about that now, given that transitioning rates skyrocketed in the last ten years among teens, especially girls, and that most who decide to detransition don't go back to the place where they transitioned.

And she also tells us that it's nobody else's business to inquire about very young transitioners because their families know what is best for them.

I want to weep. I liked her mansplaining story, but this is really both so extremely biased but more insultingly showing no thinking and no effort.

[–][deleted] 9 insightful - 2 fun9 insightful - 1 fun10 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

I really have no clue when the narrative switched from "trans women are mentally ill men" to "trans women are women, and if you say otherwise you're a bigot"

[–]divingrightintowork 9 insightful - 2 fun9 insightful - 1 fun10 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Clearly Rebecca solnit has never talked to Patricia Wright, Benny Diambu-Wright, and Charlotte Reed... And she never will because they were murdered by Dana Rivers.
