As a native speaker of German, just no.

Of course nazi is a play at nationalsozialistisch, but this is a backronym. They hated that term. The bavarian term Igantzius means moron, sort of. "Nazi" was a shorthand. The whole situation is a lot like "Daesh" for ISIS.

While we're at it, the German word "Sozialismus" has fuck all to do with "socialism" as it is used in English.

I think the point where we have our disagreement is the difference between disengagement and counter-activism. I have no interest in actively antagonizing trans people who are reasonable, just like I have nothing against men and don't advocate for a single 'anti-man' policy. To me asking radfems to 'protect trans people' is no different than asking r/PCOS to 'use trans-inclusive language'.

So much of the extremely off-topic, blatant, low effort anti-semitic comments (on the internet in general, not just here) feel like a false flag to frame communities as alt-right. That's why it tends to spill into everything, the "collateral damage" was actually the intended target.

Do you keep a daily schedule for yourself?

My day is split into segments, I assign one significant task I want to advance to a segment. In normal times, my lengthy commute forces me to tie my day to a train schedule, with lunch as a divider for my time at uni. Now, in pandemic times, sunrise, lunch and sunset split my day.

Yes, I've read How to read a Book as supplementary material in my humanities requirement, probably the single best aspect of the humanities requirement.

Regarding book reviews, how is that going?

I'm working on two things in parallel.

  • A systematic, comparative review of the last 6 Sci-Fi books I've recently read (I've been on a binge). My focus here is to contrast the old Hugo/Nebula type of classics vs more recent Sci-Fi bestsellers.

  • Pop-Sci books that I found notable (not necessarily for their quality). Here, my my review effort is more of a "peer review" or attempt to square it with actual literature. The book I'm currently reviewing in that section is "How to sleep". Keeping a good sleep schedule is important, but not important enough to justify a poorly researched pop-sci book (I'm not the first to notice how bad this book is).

Thanks for making one of the first serious contributions to this sub!

According to current science

Science is a method, not an opinion. Some academics say that, and many oppose then. Academia and science are also not the same thing. There are many areas where the opinions of scientists are split, political or not. Science can't and shouldn't work as an authority. It's a practice. You don't need a license to apply scientific methods and have an opinion on a subject in scientific discourse.

The mainstream radical feminist movement is clearly aligning itself with American conservatism

I don't mean to offend, but as a non-American, I find it really annoying when Americans assume that their continent is the world. I know very little about the experiences of Black Americans not because I'm an ignorant segregationist, but because there are no Black Americans around where I live. We do have ethnic minorities in Europe, but they are mostly White, and certainly not privileged.

in fact... many of them genuinely want to see us suffer.

That is a really strong claim. I have been lurking on the GC subreddit for a long time and race simply hardly ever came up. Can you give examples here?

Science is based on epistemic humility. As in: "we concede we don't know things and the burden of proof is on the one proposing an explanation".

Pro-Science people don't say "science knows everything". Pro-Science people say "science is the best chance we have to figure out the most". The reason science can't explain consciousness is because currently there is no approach to explaining consciousness that doesn't involve pulling things out of your ass, which science rejects.

I'm a female STEM graduate student in Europe. I can't be too much more specific without the risk of doxxing myself.

I'm currently working on two areas:

  • General lifestyle: I really struggle to keep a good circadian rhythm. I need to go to the gym more.

  • Media Consumption. I'm "very online", but I'm extremely passive (as in, I hardly ever post). I have no social media besides big R. Reddit used to be cool, but for reasons we are all aware of, it has gone to shit. I spend so much time just scrolling/reading, I want it to matter. So either I tone it down, or I make it matter, by having good conversations and contributing content.

Recently I've taken up reading books again. Hopefully I can make that habit stick. I plan to write a bunch of book reviews soon.

Any type of pattern matching the brain does is complex and contains subconscious ("non-explicit") heuristics. Right now I'm reading a book[1] in which the author asserts that paramedics sometimes "just know" that somebody who they meet in some non-medical context is about to have a heart attack. Turns out there is a characteristic change in blood flow in the face that announces a heart attack, which an experienced paramedic can unknowingly pick up on!

Some candidates for non-obvious clues are:

  • The amount of contrast in somebodies face. The more contrast, the more feminine. [0]

  • Proportions that depend on height. Even when you can't tell how tall somebody (because their body is out of frame), your brain could pick up on the jawline-neck ratio.

  • Skull shape. Men's eyes tend to be a bit more deeply set, i.e. they have a thicker browbone.

  • Posture and gestures. Somebody who tries to perform gestures they are not used to may unintentionally exaggerate.

  • Women's hair is much thicker than men's. As a result, identical haircuts end up looking slightly different. Women's long haircuts naturally have more volume than men's.

  • Skin texture is influenced both by sex hormones and chromosomes directly.

Hope this is helpful!

A tool can be used for good or bad depending on the quality of the person using it.

The very overwhelming majority of people on the planet are not Jews. But science and technology can be used by anybody. If the Jews were "behind everything", would they not be against tech/science? For example, communicable diseases, like polio, affect the powerless majority more severely than The Man. Yet in 1955, a Jew invented a vaccine against that and made the patent royalty free. Not the kind of thing an Illuminati would do, right?

Most chilling quote in my opinion:

I think there are others, like me, who went to work at GIDS expecting to do complex assessments and differential diagnosis but the reality is that you run the risk of being called transphobic if you propose that, say, a child might have Body Dysmorphia rather than Gender Dysphoria.

I remember seeing a documentary that featured him. He didn't want to be too explicit, but he alluded to having some kind of surgery that repositioned his internal genitals. He also was very insistent that he had his child "naturally", so I assume after that procedure he is in every sense physiologically male.

In that documentary, he seemed quite based, btw. After his sports career ended, he became a successful businessman, I believe he runs a skiing academy.

You are right in that we should avoid becoming a "circular firing squad" that is more concerned with purity of ideology than actually getting things done. Being a single-issue coalition of people that maybe disagree on other issues is powerful.

Courage is contagions. I believe one of the major reasons libfems and women's groups keep giving in to the "validation rain-dance" that currently drowns out absolutely everything is that we have been raised to apologize for speaking ("I don't mean to say x, but ...") and many men have an unconscious habit of dismissing women, even if they would agree to what is being said. As you have pointed out, men could benefit enormously from feminism, but feel humiliated by what this implies for them, like doing "women's work" or accepting that they have emotions. I don't see any other way to normalize women voicing strong opinions by getting out of our comfort zone and speaking up. Breaking the cognitive distortion field is more important than any single issue. We cannot logic people out of something that they didn't logic themselves into.

I'm sorry about your job, I hope you find a new one soon. Stay angry.

I started out ok, but it got completly hijacked by absolute bottomfeeders. Voat allows downvoteing, so anybody who dares to say that "cucked nigger faggot" is not a valuable contribution gets hounded off the site. The admins never made any attempt to promote high effort content. Voat uses a bizarre .NET based software stack that makes the hosting cost absolutely ridiculous. My theory is that voat made itself dependent on rightoid/incel donations to keep going.

Essentially they never managed to have any OC and became a wasteland of very predictable incel/rightoid circlejerking. The pyramid of debate on saidit at the very least shows a commitment to encouraging high-quality content. Based on what I've seen so far, it is believable that saidit manages to establish a steady stream of content beyond the endless bitching about reddit, so I'm optimistic.

I am against this.

First, it would not work. Woke, liberal feminism is doing exactly what you describe. Of course plenty of men are anti-sexist, but the majority of people who "don't get feminism" don't get it because they have a vested interest in not getting it. Feminism has been doing the iT BenEfiTs mEn ToO thing since forever. It's technically correct, but completely irrelevant. We are allowed to advocate for our interests without first making it some big pity party where everybody else is first drowned in validation, before we dare to take up a bit of space ourselves. What makes you think pandering to the alt-right will make the altright pander to us? PickMes never get anything in return.

Second, feminism, especially GC feminism, is about dignity. Debasing ourselves like you suggest would defeat the point.

TRAs and MRAs are crybullies. Like all crybullies, people get tired of their shit eventually. Like all bullies, if you give in they abuse you even more. Reddit has been dropping in Alexa ranking for a while now. The UK rejected the SelfID law. Detransitioners will eventually sue the shit out of the gender witch doctors.

It's up to us how long it takes. Keep in mind that there is nothing new under the sun.

This sounds so weird to me. I would have expected a smaller, more niche community to have a higher proportion of people who create content.

Any idea what causes this ratio to be so consistent?

"TERF" is the term that professionally woke activists and (an unusually stupid) subset of "Trans Rights" Activists use for women (feminist or not) who disagree with them on the trans issue.

It literally stands for "Trans Exclusive Radical Feminist", because the alleged transgression is that trans-identifying men (Transwomen) are being "excluded from feminism", i.e. people who care about women's issues (ranging from political stuff to women's health topics) don't want to do the gender-affirmation dance for this minority-within-a-minority every single time they dare to speak. No, Recursion and Dark Matter are are completely independent.

Re Enders Game, I understand that it is a product of it's time. But reading it back to back with modern SciFi books made it look really unimpressive. I've vented about this book in this thread twice now, but I don't mean to imply that people who liked it have bad taste. There has to be a legit reason why it was so highly acclaimed, I just don't see it.

You are probably right about googles algorithm bias. One of the reasons the GC situation is opaque to outsiders is that content discovery algorithms are biased against us, not just on Google, but I believe on Twitter as well. This does not even require a conspiracy on the part of the platform, people maliciously spamming the report button already has that effect.

I just don't get what people see in Enders game. You are not the first to recommend it in this thread. I read the first one and currently I'm trying to force myself to read "Speaker for the dead".

To me it stands out as really bad (compared to other sci-fi classics) because there is no science fiction in it. Ender and all the other feel like cardboard cut-outs. If Ender is supposed to be gifted, why is he so stupid? One of the most important rules of good writing is "show, don't tell". Card tells us that Ender is a tactical genius, but his "tactics" are really unimpressive: He gets bullied by a fellow kid, and the only "tactic" he can come up with is to injure it to the point it dies? Or at the academy, when Ender hacks the internal comms system, the narrator simply informs us that Ender hacked the system through pure cleverness, but doesn't bother to illustrate how.

I also had a long bout of not reading, but it just took me a few days to snap back into it. If you don't have time to read like you used to (but want to go back to reading regularly), commit to reading on public transport, or anywhere else where you would normally be on your phone. At least that what's worked for me.

I will definitely check out Snow Crash at some point.

Gender Critical and Atheism by -thedarkhorse- in GenderCritical

Wow, this is all over the place. Help me understand:

"Science says we can connect to something larger" ? Adult neuroplasticity is the idea that we can form new habits, learn languages, change our preferences, rather than being stuck with the brain we developed during puberty -- it just takes more effort. I don't understand how you relate this to "connecting to something larger".

"[...] how sustained meditation can lead to radical changes in attitude/opportunity [...]" when somebody tries to take away my ability to speak freely, how does meditation help?

I'm an atheist because I think faith-based belief systems have no credibility and tend to be run by people with ulterior motives, not because the belief is "useful". In order for me to not be an atheist, some faith-based system -- be it gendered souls, Christianity, whatever -- would have to meet it's burden of proof.

I've recently re-discovered my passion for reading, in the last few weeks I've read:

  • Recursion by Blake Crouch. I loved this book, for two reasons: The "Fictional Science" in this book is not just window dressing, it facilitates a plot that wouldn't work without it. The writing is very credible, in the sense that the characters believable and the story never breaks its own rules.

  • The Martian by Andy Weir. While this book isn't too deep, it's really fun.

  • Enders Game by Scott Orson Card. Holy shit that book was bad. I just don't get how garbage like this gets to be a "SciFi calssic". The "Science Fiction" elements of the story add nothing. You could tell the same story of "boys in the space fight academy" in a "paintball summer camp" type of setting. Also, why does the protagonist being a "victim" in every circumstance excuse his behaviour? Because of the fanfiction-grade writing, that's why.
