I don't have the time to go hunting for music, and I feel like even before the internet it's been that way for me. My friends could introduce me to some cool and not so cool things because they were willing to spend hours combing through stuff at Tower. But I am exposed to, whether I like it or not, tons of terrible mainstream/lamestream music just by existing in public spaces. What gets played the most is still what's marketed. My average student is mostly interested in what's marketed and popular as well.

I will be checking out your rec though, thanks!

I'm sorry if the question sounded obvious but I didn't want to assume that you think a woman's name can be bought. Apparently my mother's name was worth $300 dollars, but that may have been discounted because I received both of my parents name. Papa got a great deal! My mother's best friend's name got bought out at the top of the market, $100k.

Surely this practice continues to make sense in the modern era. /s

That sounds like such a typical cycle for brands. Get your name recognized for whatever is good about it, then people keep buying because they trust the brand, then more people keep buying for no other reason than the logo clout, and at that point you can lower the quality and raise the prices because people are idiots.

Commercial trans visibility is so insulting, even when the models are not revolting like our poster boys of "These are not our crimes." I've already had it with the long tenure of young, photoshopped and starved young women being better at woman-ing than I am, but now literal men too?

To be clear I am saying that that TRAs are consistent that breasts are for women only, not that I think breast are only for women. I am very aware of gynecomastia, male breast cancer etc. and of course I do not use ridiculous terminology such as "female penis" in my own language.

What I am pointing out is this irony: Breasts, which are things that both men an women have, seem to be things that TRAs view as being a female-only body part.

Parts of anatomy such as genitals, which most of us recognize as being distinctly a part of one sex class or another, are viewed by TRAs as part of any sex class.

The ONE consistent thing I see across all of trans ideology is that breasts are female and an indicator of womanhood. Transwomen want 'em. Transmen can't wait to get rid of 'em.

The rest of seems to be hit or miss. The uterus, ovaries, penis, and balls, those may cause dysphoria, they may be referred to as a a female penis or male cervix, it's anyone's call.

But breasts...those are obviously female and female only gxrls!

I'm choosing to blame generations of cartoon animals with breasts.

When they were just getting started they had a cute little market-testing store in an area I frequented. The manager there was overweight and super friendly. I enjoyed shopping there. I wouldn't mention her weight if it wasn't for the CEO's gatekeeping who he wanted wearing his products. So like, when you're a company just getting started, sure, have a great manager who doesn't fit your personal standards for looks, but I wonder where she is now?

Stupidly thinking they were some home-grown company back in the day I wrote them a fan letter and then also let them know what kind of exercise clothes features I'd be interested in. At the time I was into cross fit stuff, which was getting super popular, so I was just wondering if they had any plans to cater to that market. They could have just ignored me, or said "Glad you like our products, we hope you keep shopping with us!" but instead they responded that what I was asking for didn't suit their image. I couldn't believe that someone on their customer relations team actually decided that my little email was worth specifically responding to, and basically discouraging me to continue as a customer.

Shortly thereafter they opened a store at every mall in my area and the small store disappeared. I went into one and was immediately turned off. It just felt like walking into some cross between The Gap and an Apple store. All the clerks were under 22 and had the same body type. I don't have any problem with any individual who fits this description, but when your entire staff are clones, something's wrong with that.

I haven't bought anything from them since and only have one article of Lulu clothing left - the first thing I ever bought. It's this great breathable little tank and it's held up great to all of my multi-day hiking adventures. I have never run into anything like it since.

Well, I was friendly with the homeless trans person who hung out at my favorite cafe. He never asked for handouts, but had a very dramatic life and loved to chat. He got beat up every so often either because drunk douchebags after last call like to pick on homeless people, but also because he got used by men for sex and abused. Not entirely sure if he prostituted - I think he really fancied finding a partner who would see him as a sweet demure geisha. So I was sympathetic to this mentally ill man and extended my sympathy to others like him for a time. But then I came to realize what colonizers a lot of them are. After experiencing my friends delicate breakup with her plain ol' dude narcissist boyfriend I learned that just because someone is mentally ill does not mean you're obligated to be supportive either. Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction.

I tell you, I feel like I'm living in crazy world. It was bad enough having to constantly battle with the Jehovas Witness families in my area over evolution curriculum, but at least my district and state had my back. In every case, once the initial complaint was made, the district curriculum lead would step in and shield me from further communication with the complainers. I seriously doubt I will have the same support on this issue because the trans movement is colonizing the LGB movement. In schools we already have in place certain protections for LGB students, protections that trans students already have. But they're getting their pronoun policing and denial of science shoehorned. If I "slip up" and say that hemophilia is an x-linked trait only passed down from the mother instead of birthing parent, that shouldn't be hate speech.

That would be great. I've mentioned here before The National Science Teacher Association has published one op-ed and then a subsequent response from the editor and other respondents in their high school publication - who knows what they're publishing in their middle school and other publications. It's a trip. If I had an adequate file sharing service available I'd share.

I really need to get around to writing an anon letter telling them I'll not be renewing my membership and why. I just need to get my shit together with some well-sourced scientific papers as to why this is dangerous.

I so miss the old editor. He was unabashed about our duty to teach facts, critical thinking, and argumentation in science, and he often centered climate change. Now every issue has social justice interwoven. I've spent my teaching career centering my practice on making sure ALL students can access my curriculum, so I can't tell if I'm just salty at the implication that I haven't been doing that until BLM became mainstream, or if their suggestions to increase engagement really are window dressing garbage.

(Edit to add for those not familiar with teacher jargon: When we say "access for all students" it's not an "all lives matter" dodge, it's a call to action to make sure our practices don't exclude any demographic of student - often times the emphasis is considering disabilities as well as culture)

Me neither, but this brings up some thoughts I struggle with. I love classic rock and prog, but there's very little female representation that I enjoy in those genres. In general I tend to not like music produced by women anyway. I think a couple of things are at play - music being highly marketed means only certain kinds of women's music gets produced (and I happen to not like much of what producers think women's music should look and sound like) and in general men have more time to noodle around in the garage with the guys or whatever so they get more opportunity to practice and make a career happen. But no, I don't think some guys jamming have any intention of destroying women!

As a public school teacher I'm begging you all, please save us. Contact your admins, school boards and superintendents. Even if you don't have children, you are still considered a stakeholder.

I have a health credential, and back when I started we weren't even allowed to demonstrate putting condoms on bananas let alone talk explicitly about homosexual sex, other than to mention that any kind of sexual contact can put you at risk for STDs. I don't know how in such a short time we're suddenly full-on gender bread. I teach in an area that gets on the news for this curriculum, but luckily have yet to see it pop up in my local schools or the schools my friends teach in. So maybe it's not as widespread as you may think - but let's not let it get there! I have been to teacher workshops that are not about the trans issue, but have passed out trans literature to us. I have experienced an admin mentioning "displaying your pronouns is just one small thing you can do to make your online environment more inclusive." I have colleagues who sport their pronouns on pins, but they were in the English and social science departments. Unfortunately I have a science colleague who is now sharing pronouns in response to admin's suggestion. I honestly don't think these folks are looking any deeper into it other than "let's be nice" as the whole movement reminds us all of the long battle for acceptance LGB people have fought. So people need to face the facts about sex segregated sports and what that means for our girls' success. They need to know what is really going on with hormone replacement and surgeries for young people. I don't think they know! I'm just one grumpy teacher sending anonymous communications because my ass is on the line. Nobody listens to us anyway. Please contact your school boards superintendents and administrators!

The results have never been impressive. In all honesty, it would be tragic if something happened to my husband. I would like to think it wouldn't affect our marriage, but that would be a tough thing to live with as an intimate couple. Like, this is a serious thing. We aren't just cars you can swap out a tailpipe for a different one.

These people scream out "genital fetishist!" as if genitals for most sexually active people shouldn't be something important. It makes me question how many of these people have actual human intimacy in their lives and aren't just trapped in their fluffy Adventure Time cartoon world where everyone has noodle bodies and parts don't matter.

Hearts not parts for me has always made the difference between close friendship and a romantic sexual one. This is what also rings the incel bell. It comes off as a friend zone gripe.

I honestly didn't even think about the connection until I saw a TRA bring it up as evidence of the gender spectrum, funnily enough. Just another layer of complexity to give the illusion of "there's a million genders!" You could have receptors that don't match your chromosomes! (Okay, cool bro, but you had enough for a matching set of balls.) This whole confusing natural variation and anomaly with spectrum-ness drives me crazy too. I blame the vidya-games that have character creation. The sliders have mushed the kids' brains.

It's what brains do defensively, looking for patterns in the chaos.

But what you're saying is the sober take. It's political chaos for the sake of political chaos and however some people are able to take advantage of that.

This is giving me flashbacks! My husbands friend, also a liberal, warned me about the funding behind the Woman's March when he learned I went, and my own father was the one who said to my mother and I, "Y'know, I heard you're not supposed to wear those hats because not everyone has a pink...you know." I knew those guys were reading some kooky shit, so how was I to know this was one of the things they could have been right on?

Meanwhile an old good friend has expressed to me over the phone with a quiver in his voice that he's willing to take collateral damage to prevent the killings. We've both been in situations where there may have been a killing (our own) if not for the intervention of the police, and his uncle is a sheriff so I'm just baffled in the short term by his behavior. But I can see the long con. My sister in law lives in a gated community with very few points of entry otherwise due to geography. Defund the police and they'll still have their private guard and everyone in that community is personally armed on top of that. She's not even the 1%! Those folks will be fine and the rest of us can just murder and sterilize ourselves as we fight over scraps and Louis Vuitton bags.

People like my father, who no longer support Trump are pointing to this shit and saying, "See?". When he and people like him think their vote will make the difference in stopping "antifa" from coming to their suburbs to "take their homes", they're going to vote for Trump again after all.

I've had conversations with liberal like minded colleagues and friends and they say, "No one's literally calling to defund the police!" but that is literally is what they mean. Then they tell me, well cops have raped underage girls detained in their squad cars. I'm appalled that we can't punish men who rape women while also having effective law enforcement.

Like with teaching, a huge chunk of the costs of law enforcement are salaries and pensions. There have been so many hit pieces done on evil teacher unions and now that we have DeVos at the helm I really worry for the integrity and stability of my profession. I always thought our Police and Firefighter unions were untouchable as they're the "great heroes" with calendars and special red/blue line flags and everything. But finally here's a way the money tied up in law enforcement salaries and pensions gets released without pissing off law n' order types like my father. Then you put the burden of community policing on the already stretched-thin and poorly compensated social workers. Brilliant, well done.

When I'm teaching AP-level Biology, we do cover cell communication and signal transduction pathways. Our case study is commonly an impala encountering a cheetah, and the resulting epinephrine dump and how cells process a response. I know I already commented in this thread but I've been reading this article piecemeal and this struck me:

In an episode where Jazz visits a surgeon and has a discussion about sexual function, Jazz states: “I haven’t experienced any sexual sensation.” Regarding orgasm, Jazz says: “I don’t know, I haven’t experienced it.” The male genitalia are awaiting testosterone to change from a pre-pubescent state to an adult state in which sexual function is possible. In the normal adult state, there is full sexual function. In one episode, Jazz’s pediatric endocrinologist states that Jazz has adult female levels of estrogen. This, however, has not given Jazz “any sexual sensation.” This makes sense physiologically, as the male genitalia (penis, scrotum, testicles, etc.) are awaiting testosterone to develop, not estrogen.

When I teach my students the most basic thing about cell communication, one thing they learn is that without a receptor, there cannot be a response. This allows your whole body to be awash in a hormone or some other molecular cue, but only certain cells will respond. On top of that, different cells will have different pathways that lead to different responses.

So you dump a female cocktail of hormones on some dude, because he already has breast tissue, there will be some response to hormones. But if the target tissue isn't there, say the uterus, the receptors aren't there either, so what do these people think they're accomplishing? The hormones don't build structures. HRS for people unhappy with the sex they were born with is such obvious horseshit pseudoscience, so of course people are buying into it. Everyone wants a simple magical pill and no one wants to really understand how complex the body really is.

Parents may think private and charter is safe. Not so. As a public school teacher I have an ask for parents out there. Rather than quietly pulling your children out of school, please raise your voices. Go to board meetings. Get this curriculum placed on their agendas. Right now, as a science teacher, trans curriculum doesn't belong in any of my state-mandated standards, and I'd like to keep it that way. Unfortunately it seems to be only conservative groups who are raising the alarm, and they already dismissed in some areas for their history of unreasonable stances on teaching evolution and plate tectonics.

But when you invest in all the equipment, mental gymnastics, and time in something that someone else is criticizing, it seems that you've got to paint the others as somehow missing out.

I always find the accusation of not liking sex as ironic. I mean, I really like it to the point where I don't need a lot of bells and whistles and dog collars to make it appealing!

I just had a phone convo with an old friend who's work serves a lot of queer folks and he's kinda bought the dogma, but clearly annoyed by most of these people. He's a finance guy, not science and he's got a history of getting taken advantage of for his kindness, so he's kinda vulnerable to the rhetoric.

Anyway, he was bitterly describing the "them" who was "clearly female when THEY started working here" and had always been a lunch-stealing grump. (I've hear him complain about this person for like, over 2 years now?) Shortly after coming out this employee quit, and quickly after that was corralled back in but to a different division. Now this person is filing a complaint for poor and exclusionary work conditions. According to friend, they all bent over backwards to accommodate this person and make them feel included. Even the other trans people that work there had a hard time getting along with this person. Anyway, friend saw this person last week hovering around HR and had some scar tissue on their forearms. You know what that means!

I just remember thinking, who even wants that? We go on about how complex the female reproductive system is, because it truly is and it's so offensive how so many transwomen just think of it as a hole, and if you're lucky, a baby-bag. Penises and testicles don't hold a candle to what women's entire bodies have to do to be reproductively functional, but still, they're more than just a tube! So now there's this crabby chick walking around with a flippy floppy dongle that no hetero woman or gay man would know what to do with. Hopefully they just expect to play with it themselves.

And here we go again rubbing "missionary sex" in everyone's face as if that's the only alternative to BDSM or that it's inherently boring and not pleasurable.

I can say that I appreciate how the kink community came together to denounce the dangerous practices brought to mainstream by 50 Shades. However, I don't trust any man into the S part of BDSM. I'm sorry, but someone working out fantasies by watching a movie (the poor actors though!) or playing a video game is loads different than acting it out with real bodies.

When I was a teen I had no idea this was even something to worry about. I didn't become sexually active until I was older, and by that time I had seen all the criticism on the internet. It made me super self conscious. Plus all the porn out there with bare vulvas and perfect or augmented tits.

A friend learned about my hangups and once said, "No one cares about your tits. Men are dogs, and they don't care about any of that." Correct on all counts as it turns out!

Anyway, some of these guys may just be engaging in a lil' tit for tat but I think some are genuinely just grossed out by vaginas and may be gay or even asexual. They've got some shame around that and so they lash out. They've got a lot of reconciling to do, but of course they won't.

Jesus christo these "human bodies's" statements of purpose! Not to be a rigid STEMlord, but someone needs to take out the garbage that's built up in humanities. No wonder people like my dad talk about the "ivory towers in academia".

Ages ago I had an "art show" in a rotating "gallery" at our college campus rec center. Like, it was just some fun stuff I made with a particular theme, and I actually made a grand from selling. Super fun! Some nincompoop in the school paper decided to do, uh, "critical analysis" (I dunno what to call it) of my work. Never contacted me for an interview, obviously didn't even read my "about the artist" plaque, and yet still posted a pretty scathing review of the deeper meanings of my work. It read like this garbage here. How was I to know my pretty painted fabrics were an affront to post modern something or other. It's like these people don't realize there is a fully functioning world outside of their mind games.

I forget what she said but it something about companies feeding on women's insecurities and men being dogs LOL.

After so many years with my husband I've come to accept that he truly, really doesn't give a shit between me all fancy and me just with a clean outfit on. I feel like it really is just a way to get women to waste their valuable time and money, and corporations have relied on our insecurities like that for so long. So of course brands are going to promote a look and aesthetic that men in general probably don't care about, but it keeps alive that anachronistic trope of women trying to out-do each other for male attention. Meanwhile the guys are all belching while scratching their junk under their worn out basketball shorts. Get me a beer babe!

I have had creationist kids in my class and have huge supports to continue providing facts-based science education to them from our state, district, and school site. I have had both the ACLU on my ass to support the religious freedom of a JW family and the Schlafly's Eagle forum try to push alternative textbook adoption on us. There have been countless other minor pushbacks against teaching evolution but for my entire career I have received immediate support, mediation, and protection from these push backs against science education.

Last school year we had a mandatory district workshop that included trans shit. It is clear I have no support on this issue, and I refuse to lose my job over it. That doesn't mean I will stop teaching biology as I always have. As long as I can, I will insist on speaking about sex and not gender. Right now, that's about the only way I can think of to weasel out of keeping both camps from destroying the civil classroom environment. Meanwhile science teachers are losing support from our trusted institutions like the National Teachers Association which has now included trans issues in two consecutive issues of The Science Teacher publication. Transman Sam Long, AP Biology teacher, is making a name by providing curriculum and teacher training for trans-friendly science education.

I'm doing the best I can in a freakish time so cut me some slack and take some action spreading the word what's going on in science education. No really, people, anyone reading this and feeling it's upsetting, get the word out. Science teachers are in danger.

I've paid my dues being both unattractive and "pretty" and from my perspective, I really think the good fortune from my "pretty" years was mostly due to that fact that I was healthy and felt better at that time. I'm also approaching 40 and I am already wanting to tap out. I just don't want to do this pretty shit anymore. I'm keeping up my fitness and health, but I am so done with uncomfortable clothes, makeup, and beauty products.

What I can't figure out is why so much of the pressure comes from other women. Any time I expressed my ennui with the whole thing on Reddit or in my personal life, someone's got to chime in with how much they enjoy it, how it's good for them, helps them face the day, how it's a valid form of expression blah blah blah. Hello, no one asked! Why so defensive? You see the same behavior if you question kink and anal as well LOL. The other response I commonly get is a sort of cheering on, like, "oh, you don't look your age!" or "You should try watching some tutorials, there's some makeup techniques that are super simple!" or "There's a cheaper version of that cream at Target!" NO stahp it! I don't want any of it! And I look exactly my age, like I should.

Anyway, I used to follow r/badwomensanatomy and for the love of gawd I was one of the few that hated "Sanity Sunday". Lots of post-pregnancy bodies and cellulite belonging to influencers. Y'all still hitting like n' subscribe on some dumbass personalities selling their bodies. They wouldn't actually be showing them off if it was really that controversial. (Also a little shout out to the creepy drawings posted on Sanity Sundays of "diverse women" where there'd be this faceless group of bodies and some would have penises. Why yes, people shat all over themselves to type "stunning and brave".)

Also, there was this photo posted somewhere on Reddit of a nude obese woman in some very peculiar poses. The comments included a lot of retching and a lot of people trying to find some nice thing to say, and no one was getting that it was "art". She wasn't trying to be beautiful and I doubt the artist was trying to display a different take on beauty. It was, honestly, weird and disturbing, yet well-lit and fascinating. Have the same kind of representation of a man and no one will miss a beat in understanding that it's just weird art.

By the way, I love Attenborough! That's a very good observation you made, that no one ever mentions his looks. Meanwhile I'm just face-palming because for every elderly woman who has died in my family in the last ten years, no one can stop themselves from going on about how beautiful they looked, even on deaths door. I've seen their old photos. Sure, they were cute when they were 20, but come on, even they were realistic about their own aging. Stop blowing smoke up everyone's ass. The old men though, no such sentiment. None.

Anyway, good rant, good rant.

No joke we get notifications of incidents where our girls were accosted or contacted and it happens at least a couple times a year. One of our students was actually taken a few years back. It was awful. I'm truly afraid our ability to intervene is being eroded.

Thank you for sharing! That has got to be an awful pressure to put on yourself, the oppressive self-editing. I hope you're feeling freed from that! It's just such a no-win situation. Men can be kind and not have their sex questioned. They may have the misfortune of encountering an asshole policing their masculinity for being too kind, but the general population still knows the guy is a man. From what you're saying, I can see how transmen end up becoming a caricature because how else can you differentiate what's simply just "you" from what might be a trait that gives the charade away. Exhausting.

Thanks! The irony is, they will find very little support from men when it comes down to it, and it will still be feminism that gives any damn for them in the end.

I wish it would stop soon too! I started teaching right when the self-harm baton was being handed from anorexia to cutting. Now I'm witnessing the trans thing with girls taking off. I still remember when a favorite student of mine "accidentally" let her sleeve slip and I saw the marks. I got counseling on it and they got her help. Still in touch with her and she is living her best life, it's really wonderful to see. But you see, I can't make that intervention with this trans shit. The first official trans boy in my class had the team of counselors meeting me ahead of time to warn me about pronouns, deadnames, and the problem of the unchangeable photo still in the system that showed her very much presenting as a girl. Had to carefully watch all documents and keep my computer screen from snoops or be sued. But you can't express concern like I used to, because I'd be the asshole. It's very hard to safeguard kids these days.

Oh, side-note, a family friend has a TIM boss who loves warmly "educating" people, but when he can't answer a question, draws a line and chastises the asker for stepping over a boundary before recommending resources for self-educating. By golly that person is a whole post for another day!

Reminds me of my husbands alcoholic buddy who early in his recovery was absolutely hateful towards anyone else with addict behavior. I guess when you make a big change like that, you have to kill the external remnants as well? Now the guy works in recovery, so at least he came around.

Hey all, thanks for the compliments on the weightlifting. It is truly the only exercise that I find "fun" and it's just so good for women to do! Not something I would start while pregnant, but I'm so glad I was able to continue safely for the majority of my pregnancy. It's been a few years, and I'm still working my lift numbers back up. I tell you, while some mothers bounce back like a boomerang, giving birth can really knock you on your ass!

My address isn't on the return envelope, but the only reason I get them is because I was a donor in the past/am on some mailing list because of my interests, so I think it gives a little more weight than just being a rando on social media. Like, hello, I'm a real woman here who was on your team!

Exactly my thoughts. Straight up has nothing to do with reproductive health. I was so shocked to find they were providing it.

I don't know what to say for men who were successful as men and then retire to enjoy the "easy" life of being a woman. But here's my hot take for half of the rest: They had their male privilege and squandered it by being useless self absorbed pizza-roll munching NEETs.

Every envelope I get asking for a donation from here on out gets the return envelope back with no money but instead a note promising them a donation if they start advocating for women against trans-rights activism. So far I've done this for the ACLU and for PP. It's only a matter of time before the DNC sends me another letter begging for money. They'll get a note too.

I just want to hear about real issues again. Supporting middle class labor, education, the environment. These are the things that get my dumb ass to vote, but of course the left is eating its own self over fairy-dust. I'm amazed at how they're topping themselves this election cycle. Can you even imagine being a politician today? You won't have the luxury of taking a "pass" to answering stupid questions about issues that do not matter to most people. And if you answer them wrong, you're done. This has nothing to do with how actual constituents feel, it has everything to do with the raving megaphone of media and social media. "JK ROWLING BAD." Most normal people are not exposed to any nuance of that particular accusation. Now imagine she were a politician running for office. Most people aren't going to bother to get at the truth and will just tick some other box because "JK ROWLING BAD...uh...because of some LBGT stuff? I dunno."

Difference between LGB and TQ: gay people just want to be able to exist in private, TQ wants to be accommodated and centred at all times and for everyone to tiptoe around them. by RedditHatesLesbians in GenderCritical

How do these folks even cross a street or feed themselves? I mean, I've fought all my life with being treated shitty because I'm a woman, but at some point I have to step outside and live my life. I just can't imagine having the same approach that TRAs do. I feel like I wouldn't have friendly relationships with anyone, because no one, man or woman, behaves perfectly with how I'd like to be treated. While I try my best, I can't accommodate everyone either. It's tough out there when we live in a diverse social world.

I get envelopes asking for handouts from both PP and the ACLU at least monthly. Back when PP was particularly under the gun, I sent them some money. Several years ago some cheerful enby-looking kids with clipboards on the corner asked me to support the ACLU and so now I'm forever on their mailing list because I gave them $50 one time, and a little more here and there.

It's election season and I tend to get a little loose with my money to support organizations I like during this time. Instead of giving them money, I sent back a note. For PP I sent them a note of appreciation for how they served me personally in the past, but said I couldn't support them any longer due to their providing inadequately tested gender-affirming care. For the ACLU I told them I'd make another donation if they ever are brave enough to support women's rights against the trans activist agenda.
