So, because women felt unsafe at a mixed sex homeless shelter, a women's only shelter was set up that not only admits men, but prioritizes men and scolds women. Huh. Ultimately, what was the point? This is considered progressive? Female harassment. This is what woke is?

These predators always go after the vulnerable first, the incarcerated, the abused, the homeless, the young ("and dumb"). Give the predators time and encouragement, they'll be emboldened to branch out and, maybe, only a handful of women could ever be safe. It'll be open season on women year round. Incel heaven. That time is coming if this erasure of women is not stopped NOW. Why do people find it so hard to think ahead?

Judge:

“I accept that had it not been for the alleged victim in this case there probably wouldn’t have been an incident. The four of you then were subjected to extremely offensive transphobic and racial abuse. Had it not been for that there would have been no violent disorder. 1. However that does not excuse what you did, you went far too far in your reactions, but of course transphobic issues are particularly sensitive. It is a sign that the so-called victim realised how wrong he was by refusing to cooperate and not make any statement. I do not in any way condone your behaviour but I accept that what happened to you at the beginning of the incident was entirely wrong and people like you should not be subject to that abuse in the public domain or anywhere. You are being punished for your overreaction to someone who has escaped punishment altogether.“2

OMG, yes! Party loyalties are NOT the answer! Please, let us take up the question presented in this article: "And how will this affect women?" Please, let this be our common focus!

The mistake that feminists have made again and again, not only in America but also in this country, is to prioritise animosity towards the right over a clear-eyed understanding of the attitude that the left takes towards women. The results of that mistake are, I think, beginning to become too glaring to ignore.

Package deal ethics produces not only blind tribalism but also incoherence

I submit package deal ethics enables inaction on all the issues involved! Lip service only is the result.

The time has run out for the "party's good on this issue, we'll get to that issue later" thinking. Let's focus- on Women and girls! If we don't, no one will!

My father's a raging misogynist. Keeping my mouth shut and my eyes and ears open over the years, enabled me to observe the insecurity, violence, and lack of intellectual depth and empathy of the majority of men, and the strength, proactive tactical thinking, and endurance, of the majority of women. Seems common sense to me to treat humans as humans, adjusting according to the individual, not the group. I'm a scientist (observer, thanks to dad), so I don't buy into equality, but I do envision respect, and the end of patriarchy. My mother is an extraordinarily intelligent woman who excels at her work and assessing situations, motives, politics. Can't express enough gratitude and awe for her. I learned from her to speak up, speak out, and speak back. Also, she counseled that opinions of others (who may well be idiots) should matter less to me than whether I am able to live with myself. I'm not a Marxist. Politically, I'm an independent. I've lived on my own since college graduation, had my tubes tied at 25, bought my own house at 27. Tried marriage for 4 years at age 34, but found I'd bought into a liar and thief. I've lived alone longer than I've lived with other people, including childhood. As appropriate, I try to prompt women to think past the obvious and the expected. I challenge men when pushed too far. In my area, men, up until the last decade, were rocked back on their heels by an unflinching assertive woman who'd get up in their face. I've been watching the diminishing of women and their position in society over the years and I fear for women in the near future. Elements are coming together to thrust women back to non-personhood. This is not a drill!

I am saying my own opinions here.

I believe a large percentage of US women who either vote Republican, or are willing to consider, research, and vote any/all parties on their ballot, are persons who may be less likely to announce their vote in public forums. Or, perhaps it is a function of age, or regional customs.

Casting one's vote has traditionally been a private issue. I remember the large, metal, mobile, voting booths which had mechanical curtains that would close via a large lever to set the machine to vote. After selections were made, the large lever was thrown back to the original position, logging the votes and opening the curtain. Even today, in my region, cardboard tabletop "cubicles" are set up for privacy. I know my own opinions on discussing my votes casts have been heavily influenced by my mother, who had me with her in the booth when she voted until I was old enough to look out for my own safety (13 yo?). She emphasized the importance of voting, women's history, and how she evaded my father's influence on, and inquiries of, her votes. ;)

I am most grateful women from UK and Canada have spoken up and worked to keep women from being erased and used/abused. Personally, I believe women are DONE if we have no language, visibility, or respect. I try to imagine (especially political) trends and movements to their potential conclusions, and this "gender not sex" protections threat is TERRIFYING. Evil people do exist, and women themselves MUST admit dystopia IS possible, nah, I submit: probable.

Edit Why don't women have x, y, or z that some women rant about not having? Because, there was a previous time when most women said "we'll get to that later"... Edit2 redundancy corrected

Oh, you are so right!! But I've also seen that so many moderate conservatives and lateish century liberals were ecstatic the neocons and other extreme elements of the Republican party HATED Trump. Many of these moderates may also feel politically homeless relatively soon depending upon how soon and vengeful the extremists take total party power.

Mmmm. I'm not on Ovarit, but in issue forums I admit to staunch speech. Sometimes it's warranted to relay issue importance or shut down subversion. e.g. Misogyny in women's forums or TRA trolls

Politics is a filthy tool feminists must deal with, and, historically, things quickly get nasty. But Women fighting for their issues in politics are different- we're not the default in society, we're ignored, dismissed, a/o used and abused, in any group, any area, our whole lives. So, when women fiercely cling to party affiliations and point fingers at other women, there IS also this sexist element. It is inherent in our social position (edit) and conditioning. We should be aware of it. IMO, the women in that Ovarit thread dismissing the linked article, are denying this fact, are doing themselves and other women another harm. Awareness can be painful, yet should we not strive for it?

I fear debate and discussion have become frowned upon in this era. (I'm ranting on society in general now, not specifically GC spaces.) Bad ideas now equal a bad person to too many people. Too often, Individual personal development stage is disregarded, "you must be as knowledgeable as me, NOW" expectations are common. Tolerance and "live and let live" values are only applied to special people. Sad times. Edit add qualifiers. :)

This is what censorship looks like in 21st-century America. It isn’t the government sending police to your home. It’s Silicon Valley oligopolists implementing blackouts and appeasing social-justice mobs, while sending disfavored ideas down memory holes. And the forces of censorship are winning. Not only because their efforts to censor leave almost no trace. They are winning because, thus far, most Americans have been content to surrender virtually every liberty in exchange for the luxury of having products delivered to their door. Most would happily submit to the rule of Big Tech, so long as their Netflix isn’t disrupted.

At some point, it will cross each of our minds to question an item on the ever-growing list of unsayables. We will find ourselves smeared, or blocked, or the target of a woke campaign. And we will look for support from those with only a dim recollection of why they once cared about free speech. Those who will note tyranny’s advance with the pitiless smile of a low-level bureaucrat already anticipating the door-delivered Cherry Garcia and hours of uninterrupted streaming: “You brought this on yourself, didn’t you?”

Prophetic.

I don't much care what consenting adults do sexually, but the proselytizing has to stop. Porn should have warnings; BDSM porn should absolutely be adult ONLY. Else, "the well is being poisoned". BDSM should never be set as mainstream - it's fringe, and making children and (idiot) adults think it's normal and expected behavior is perverse. Women have suffered and died, and men had walked scott-free for murder using the defense of "rough sex". The word "shameful" doesn't cover it.

Let's look at the legal advances for women Moon's loathed grey-hairs made in the US:

1963 The Equal Pay Act passes, requiring equal wages for women and men doing equal work. It is the first federal law prohibiting sex discrimination.

1964 The Federal Civil Rights Act passes, including Title VII, which guarantees equal opportunity in employment. Title VII is the statutory basis not only for equal opportunity and sex discrimination cases, but, as a subset of the latter, sexual harassment cases as well. The Civil Rights Act creates the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to enforce workplace equality.

By the mid-1990's, there are over 1,000 such shelters nationwide, but with very limited bedspace and funding. Facilities located in large cities report that they may have to turn away as many as 70% of the women who seek temporary respite from violence in their own homes.

1975 – The Supreme Court denies states the right to exclude women from juries.

1978 The Pregnancy Discrimination Act becomes federal law, recognizing that discrimination on the basis of pregnancy is discrimination on the basis of sex. The PDA guarantees pregnant women who are capable of working the right to do so, identical to employees with other, but similar, medical conditions. The Act also mandates that employers provide the same benefits to women at any stage of pregnancy, delivery, or recovery from delivery when they are medically unable to work as to all other employees with temporarily disabling conditions. It also forbids workplace discrimination against women based on the mere possibility of pregnancy.

1986 The U.S. Supreme Court holds in Meritor Savings Bank v. Vinson that sexual harassment creating a hostile or abusive work environment, even without economic loss for the person being harassed, is in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

1993 The Family & Medical Leave Act becomes law, based on the research and policy initiatives prepared by the Women's Law and Public Policy Fellowship class of 1985-86.

And let's not mention the social changes, like girls and women wearing slacks or jeans in school or out in public or at work, as one example (1970s). Or five player full court basketball rather than the 6on6 version I grew up with. Little things you take for granted.

But screw them old broads, right? Grey-haired Radfems, who needs em, huh?

https://www.pbs.org/wnet/amanpour-and-company/video/december-25-2020-qpxnyz/

BJK, who helped found the WTA, has some odd blind spot concerning men's tendency to colonize and diminish women. Note, Andy Murray stating some men would rather NOT see a raise at all, than have a raise equally for the sexes! Anyone see as much as a flicker on BJK's face? My impression is BJK is for herself first, then tennis. Women? (Nothing inherently wrong with that stance, if true, but people should be cautious.)

It was only the earliest of 1970s that elite women tennis players began to see prizes > 20% of men's.

https://www.wtatennis.com/about

https://www.tennis.com/pro-game/2015/02/1970-womens-tour-begins/54184/

From the PBS transcript: (Amanpour to Andy Murray, his response)

  • On that cha-ching note, Andy Murray, certainly some in the male world in men's tennis are concerned that they wouldn't get as maybe as much cha-ching, so to speak.

Do you see any struggle from other men in your sport to try to get this done?

And except 'cause you want to see it done.

  • Yeah, I mean, yeah, definitely.

There's some some potential for that.

I mean, I've had some times conversations in the past, when there's been prize money increases within the sport where let's say the fresh round losers check has gone from the man that went from like 8,000 to $10,000.

And the women's went from $6,000 to $10,000.

And I spoke to some of the male players about that who were unhappy because the prize money was equal.

And I said, 'Well, would you rather, 'there was no increase at all?'

And, they said to me, 'Yeah, actually.'

And I was like, 'Well, that's some of the sort 'of the mentalities that you're working with 'in these discussions 'where someone would actually rather make less money 'just so they're not an on an equal footing 'with some of the female players.'

So there will be some challenges.

But look, I think, when you have, obviously a lot of the top male players now starting to discuss it and talk about it, that's definitely very promising.

But I think it's really important, I think, in these negotiations that when it comes to the sort of key decision makers right now in tennis, pretty much all of them are men.

And I think that when these discussions happen, it's quite important not just to see this merger through like a man's eyes and to bring more women into the decision making positions, so that everybody's voice gets heard and everybody gets protected in these discussions.

The dude is more sensitive to women's issues than BJK.

I still haven't figured out how these young women believe they'll retain women's right to abortion when women are no longer legally considered as a separate (sex) class. People (penis-havers) will be the ultimate arbiters of if, who, and when an abortion may be performed. And, more likely than not, it will be to the mans advantage. I fear women will lose their voices, and likely their own agency, in such personal matters. Cause women's voices have been dismissed, and outright banned, in many instances, especially this GC issue. But, I've had to listen to misogynistic declarations for decades. It's MRA, IMO.

Edit. Yeah I know sex is partially defined as pregnancy in the Act, but is abortion addressed? What is not specified is open to interpretation. Wouldn't a male "mother" also have a say in pregnancy termination? Or retention? I bet that'd be a lobbying point next.

“(4) SEX.—The term ‘sex’ includes— “(A) a sex stereotype; “(B) pregnancy, childbirth, or a related medical condition; “(C) sexual orientation or gender identity; and “(D) sex characteristics, including intersex traits. “(5) SEXUAL ORIENTATION.—The term ‘sexual orientation’ means homosexuality, heterosexuality, or bisexuality. “(b) Rules.—In a covered title referred to in subsection (a)— “(1) (with respect to sex) pregnancy, childbirth, or a related medical condition shall not receive less favorable treatment than other physical conditions; and “(2) (with respect to gender identity) an individual shall not be denied access to a shared facility, including a restroom, a locker room, and a dressing room, that is in accordance with the individual's gender identity.”; and https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/house-bill/5/text

I find the given "definition" of "sex" to be particularly concerning. Sex is a stereotype or medical condition? That won't cause women problems in future? [edit: is this not replacing biological sex with gender feels? Removing legal, and soon social, recourses from women ?!]

Surprisingly, "sexual orientation" is stated as the three commonly accepted, not bastardized.

Fuck NPR and their transgender agenda! Sex! It was SEX based discrimination! Women may well be the big losers now this great woman has passed.

The real Ginsburg made this point in her majority opinion in United States v. Virginia, which ordered Virginia Military Institute, the state’s all-male military school, to become coed. There, she wrote that “[p]hysical differences between men and women … are enduring,” and, quoting Ballard v. United States, added, “[t]he two sexes are not fungible.”

Also, that same case:

Ginsburg wrote that the Virginia Military Institute “would undoubtedly require alterations necessary to afford members of each sex privacy from the other sex in living arrangements.”

This case was mid 90s, so she was aware of transsexuals.

The brashness of recent moves by MRAs (of all types) reveal these attacks on women won't be fading away, won't be ending any time soon.

Women before us fought hard to gain us the rights to have the choice to live independently from men, from voting rights, independent access to financial/banking services, property and wealth rights, and reproductive choices, etc. All coming at risk.

And men aren't just promoting these threats amongst themselves over beers - they've commandeered political organizations (including those created by and for women) in order to remove women's voices, our own words and political impact.

These men who insist on controlling women won't stop, all women are at risk.

Fuck off, MRA shill!! It's called effort. Men don't value what they get for free. Pre screening males is common sense, not doing so is naivety or absolute stupidity. You advocating women act stupidly/against their own self interests?

You going to answer me this time? I'm still waiting on my other question of you...

Single-sex spaces: it’s not all about the toilets - uncancelled by [deleted] in GenderCritical

And yet I wonder how far the people who parrot this phrase (TWAW) with such conviction are prepared to accept the consequences. One easy way to assess this is to pose the question devised by Helen Staniland: “Do you believe that male-sexed people should have the right to undress and shower in a communal changing room with teenage girls?”

Curiously, people who become very energised about the right of male-sexed people to use female toilets don’t like this question very much and try to avoid answering it. But it gets to the heart of the issue about single-sex spaces: do we believe a man is a woman because he says he is? Or is there something more fundamental about what makes a woman a woman?
