I guess it's not just lesbians being kicked out anymore!

It's this sort of mission creep that means very soon no group identity or freedom of association will be allowed. It was reported today about a women's refuge in the UK that had previously become trans inclusive lost their funding because they don't provide services for gay men. So let's say they did relent and accept gay men then immediately straight men have a good legal argument for discrimination. The end result being that what was formerly a women's refuge becomes a refuge for everyone and very few women will want to access it.

I've seen so many example of men coming out as trans whilst their partner is pregnant. It's really quite common. Reminds me of domestic abuse literature where it's pointed out that pregnancy is often an inciting incident for the start of abuse. No doubt because it's at this point she is most vulnerable and trapped and is more likely to accept anything thrown her way.

If it's any consolation I think the article says a lot more about them and like the NYT hit piece on British terfs a couple of years back (that this was clearly modelled on) it might not have the effect they are hoping for. What actually ends up happening is anyone reading who isn't a member of the church of queer gets confused and looks into the orgs they are slagging off. This is how The Peakening happens.

As an aside I find it quite funny that Terf Island and Mumsnet (lol) are apparently living rent free in the head of some American dude.

The main person responsible for this is a prominent Lib Dem member who is reported to describe herself as a 'queer heterosexual' whatever the hell that means.

My interpretation is that a straight woman verbally abused and hounded a gay man from a pride event because she believes his same sex attraction is transphobic and that she has more right to be there than him.

I know I say this a lot but it's just unfathomable to me how we reached this point. It's profoundly disturbing.

I saw an older gay man comment on twitter that the video was just like a scene from the 80s when gay men would be harassed and hounded in public.

I don't think the majority of women are fully aware of all the issues. It's easy to forget that most of the population are not on Twitter and don't see the extremes of batshittery. Twitter isn't real life and the last election reflected that - twitter was convinced it would be a Labour landslide but what actually happened was an 80 seat majority for the conservatives. Activists are completely out of touch with what the wo/man on the street thinks. The other issue is what most people's understanding of trans is, a lot of people are still confused over terminology e.g they think a transwoman is a woman who wishes to be a man.

You've probably heard of our longest running soap opera Coronation St, back in the 90s they introduced a transwoman character called Hayley. It was a massive story at the time and the character stayed on the show for about 20 years. This is the type of thing that informs most people's views of a transwoman - however Hayley was played by an actual woman and the whole story arc bears no resemblance to the reality of the trans movement. If Hayley was played by a man and resembled one of the many reddit transbians yelling about gate keeping lesbians and girldick absolutely nobody would have bought into it. Nor would they have been impressed with an existing male character having a stunning and brave midlife transition and dumping his wife and kids in favour of posting fetish stuff on the internet.

There's an element of the British public having been groomed to accept the idea of one thing whilst something else entirely has been going on just out of sight. It's a testament to how dedicated the women who did spot what was going on have been that we've been able to turn things around as much as we have. Considering we don't have anything like the first amendment it's a tough slog when disagreeing that people can change sex means you risk your job. The big thing we do have going for us is that geographically we're a small country and this has made networking and awareness raising much easier. There's a long way to go but it's doable.

I really hope this works out. I'm interested to know how it will be tackled because it won't be easy.

Spinster has worked so far because the fediverse is decentralised and the code open source, despite that a huge number of other instances in the fediverse have blocked Spinster to their users and vice versa.

A more traditional forum will be harder. I know most of us here won't be fans of Kiwi Farms but it's a good example of a standalone site that's constantly targeted for takedown. As I understand it the owner had to set up his own hosting company and servers - that's the first thing people target if you're using 3rd party hosting. I'm not clear how he finances this because all avenues of monetising the site have been blocked - ad services won't work with the site, payment processors blocked, banned from all sites like Patreon, merchandising a non starter (see payment processors). I believe he eventually left the US and lives somewhere in Eastern Europe, I presume to escape being targeted and perhaps so the site sits outside of other jurisdictions.

In the current climate I struggle to see how a start up Gender Critical site is going to make it. Mumsnet is just about hanging on because it's been established about 20 years, probably has it's own servers at this point and the feminism board is only one part of the overall business. Even so the situation is precarious and the withdrawal of some advertising and partnerships a blow to the business model.

I'm full of admiration for their ambitions but I feel like it's going to need a big injection of capital to survive the first year or so (anyone have JKR's number?!!!!)

I wonder if some of it is because we don't have an equivalent word like 'bromance' for girls so they use bisexual instead? In my experience some young women and girls can have really intense female friendships during their formative years that can almost be like romantic relationships without the sex. It's not difficult to see why in these identity obsessed times they might try to label it when really it's quite a standard (although not universal) girlhood experience. I also have a theory that one of the unconscious reasons for these intense friendships is that they can serve as a 'safe space' for exploring relationship skills that are useful later on.

I don't think same sex marriage caused this. Firstly because there are countries that have embraced transgenderism where marriage equality doesn't exist. Secondly the groundwork for much of what's happened was laid decades ago. Orgs like The Beaumont Society/Press for Change in the UK have been around for a long time. We had the Gender Recognition Act (2004) years before marriage equality, in fact one of the main reasons the GRA exists in the UK is because the government at the time did not want to introduce same sex marriage.

That said organisations like Stonewall have taken advantage and accelerated things due to having a vacuum post marriage equality. It's provided them with a new cause and new income stream. So I can see why people conflate marriage equality and what has come after.

Re the mental illness aspect. I don't necessarily think it's a problem to have removed the T from the DSM just as it wasn't with gay. For me it's a case of present outwardly how you wish but stop pretending people can change sex and that there are no consequences to that lie.

As a comparison it would be like gay people decades ago rather than fighting for acceptance of reality e.g two men can be in a relationship and that's fine, insisting their relationships were actually heterosexual despite the evidence of our eyes.

I really don't see how in 30/40 years the concept of gender ideology will have survived all the inevitable casualties. Things are pretty bad now and a hell of a lot of people are starting notice. Are people really going to be discussing in decades to come about how it's so great that no females compete in sport now? Will they reminisce happily about how backwards it all was when AFABs used to win Olympic medals? I hope that's not the dystopia we have to look forward to because it's not a world I want to live in.

I think it's a lot more than that and little to do with political allegiance. I can easily believe that most would rather rip their tongue out than admit to being gender critical/a believer in biology in the current climate but I'm sure their choice of sex partners tell you everything you need to know. If they aren't including FTMs in their dating pool, they know.

Thing is though some are. This is one of the issues, if all LGB's stood firm it would be a lot easier. Same with women and feminism, for every woman who is fighting against female erasure and wanting kids to grow up safely there's another who's cheering it on and transing their 3 year old.

You might find this interesting. It happened a few years ago in the UK but highlights what you are observing. It's too long to fully quote but I've picked out some relevant bits.

https://www.feministcurrent.com/2018/03/23/leftist-women-uk-refuse-accept-labours-attempts-silence-critiques-gender-identity/

Lucy Mcdonagh grew up working class, raised by a single mother. Her life as a young woman was marked by addiction, abuse, poverty, and mental health issues. She managed to escape a relationship with an extremely violent man at 32-years-old, after being partnered with him for 10 years. “My experience of being a working class woman and the level of trauma carried by many working class people has been my driving force since I was young,” Mcdonagh told me.

“All I have ever wanted to do is to try and empower working class people into supporting ourselves and, in doing so, empower our community. Being working class isn’t just about poverty. It’s about resilience and an unspoken understanding of violence. We don’t talk about our struggles because that places us at greater harm.”

That reality is suddenly of great interest to those who wish to coopt (or “parasitize,” if you will…) the struggles of oppressed groups as a means to gain social, cultural, or political leverage.

Mcdonagh had been forced to close the holistic wellness centre she was running in Deptford after leaving her then-partner, due to the trauma and subsequent breakdown she experienced during the police process. Once back on her feet, Mcdonagh co-founded The Deptford People Project, which not only feeds people, but, in her words, “created a family for those who were ostracized from the community.”

“We eat together, we played music, laughed and talked… We were not offering a service, we were offering an opportunity to become part of a community again. There was no ‘helping the poor’ — we are all poor and ran the project together. It was amazing.”

Not long after this project took off, Deptford was gentrified, and working class people like Mcdonagh were no longer welcome. “Working class people can be quite scary to white middle class people not from the area,” she explained.

“We shout and swear and take the mick out of [tease] each other. We speak a different language. One that is often mistaken for aggression. We’re not [politically correct] because most of us have never really believed that politics is anything more then a rich man’s game to get richer. But we’re not unintelligent — we’re just not academic.”

Gentrification brought a sudden increase in “very posh, white, ‘social justice’ groups and movements.” Now, the local groups who claimed to support the most marginalized seemed, to Mcdonagh, to be little more than “a social gathering for privileged students, using the community as a trendy trademark.”

“They used weird pronouns and called themselves ‘they,'” Mcdonagh said. She didn’t think this “rich kid’s trend” would affect her work so didn’t concern herself too much. “We were too busy trying to keep people fed, off the street, and out of prison.”

Though purporting to support the oppressed, Mcdonagh felt these students had no concept of or empathy toward the real experiences of actual marginalized women. “In reality [they] were supporting themselves via a complex new ideology and language that only they speak,” she said.

Mcdonagh was similarly nonplussed after meeting with a new domestic violence organization, also run mainly by young middle class students. The language this group used struck Mcdonagh as nonsensical and unhelpful to women actually suffering due to male violence. “The list of trigger warnings and safe space policies included a whole load of new gender terms that I had never heard of.” She adds, “I don’t know what a safe space is but I’d like to know where there is one for working class people in our area.”

In particular, all the focus on “gender identity” confused her. “Why were all the most publicized [social justice organizations]… suddenly centering their [work] on a group of people I’ve never come into contact with?”

At this point, Mcdonagh discovered the proposed changes to the GRA. She had some close friends who were “transsexual,” so understood how the GRC worked. She told me:

“I had never been concerned about a trans person who had medically transitioned entering a women-only space. To my knowledge it wasn’t a big thing. Only about 5000 people have a GRC in the UK. So you can imagine that doesn’t really cause any major issues.”

But during a discussion with Goldsmiths students about a community housing project, things blew up. Mcdonagh was verbally attacked by students after rejecting the new language being imposed on her community, called a “white cis woman,” then a “bitch and a “cunt.” A young male student tagged her in a post online arguing that the Women’s March should not allow women to focus on “the vagina” as it was “transphobic.” When Mcdonagh asked how he was defining “woman,” the man responded, “Anyone who says they are.”

This is when, she says, it all fell into place. “That’s what ‘self-identify’ means: anyone can say they are anyone… So, rich, privileged people can claim to be marginalized.” Beyond that, she asks, “How can we keep working class women safe if anyone can be a women legally?”

Mcdonagh became more troubled when “a middle class teenage boy identifying as women [was] given a woman’s officer position in the Labour Party” and when she observed a woman she knew suspended from the party for “refusing to say that a male person with a penis is a woman.”

She tells me there is “a very real lack of understanding about female victims of abuse, their need for sex-segregated spaces, and their need to be protected from predatory men.” But it has become impossible to debate or even discuss these issues. “Suddenly (mainly) white middle class students were shouting down and abusing working class women for expressing concern,” she says. “These people were bullying real victims into [submitting to] their ideology — women who have spent their lives being forced to accept situations they don’t want.”

Mcdonagh says she doesn’t believe that “a rich white boy” can “understand the needs of a working class ex-care system woman, raped and abused for decades by many different men — a woman living in a world that won’t ever feel safe again and who is bringing up children in a community that is suffering [due to] poverty, abuse, and trauma.”

“I couldn’t sit back a watch this final episode of ‘Gentrification Deptford’ invade the only thing that working class women have left: their experience.”

Mcdonagh and her group were concerned about how the proposed changes might affect services for women like her and those she worked with. Yet the questions they have are not being answered. They worry about how they will be able protect the women they work with from males who need only self-identify as female in order to access women’s spaces and about whether or not a “small, unfunded, grassroots organization [will be able to] challenge the law for the greater good if needed.” They also want to know whether challenging such a law could jeopardize their access to funding in future.

“Working class women know the lengths that abusers will go to get access to their victims,” she said. “We know this because we have lived it.”

“I fear that just the possibility that a male-bodied person [whether a client or staff member] could access a women-only service would be enough for, for example, our Muslim women’s community to avoid those spaces,” Mcdonagh says. “We are still trying to access hard to reach women and this would definitely make it more difficult.”

While she doesn’t believe “trans people” are inherently a threat, Mcdonagh believes very strongly that victims of male violence need women-only services and that women should be prioritized in terms of staffing these kinds of services as well. “We have already seen that trans-identifying males tend to apply for women-only positions and job vacancies as a way of reinforcing their gender identity,” she says.

“The first thing Lily Madigan did upon receiving their GRC was to apply to volunteer for women’s refuge. This is a white, middle class, 20-year-old male (who has not medically transitioned), who took their school to court to be able to wear a skirt. Lily wasn’t applying to volunteer because they felt they had something to offer victims of domestic violence. Lily was using women’s refuge to validate their identity and enforce transgender rights regardless of the effect on female victims.”

“When we are being verbally abused and called fascists because we are concerned about the effects of policy change on marginalized people, it is a direct attack on working class women and grass roots organizations.”

It’s bad enough that women are being fired, ostracized, bullied, and threatened for trying to speak about an issue that affects their lives, rights, spaces, and movements in so many ways. That it is largely young, white, middle and upper class individuals, bullying marginalized women, who have worked in these movements for decades, makes the situation all the more shocking and hypocritical.

Mcdonagh says:

“I want to tell those people who have gentrified our whole existence that our safe spaces are not for sale. That our experience is not for them to redefine. I want to let those people know that they are complicit in the victimization of already victimized people. Mostly, I want to start a conversation about social privilege and how the trans political and social movement is driven through [academia] and is suppressing the rights of working class women.”

It's made for a SuperFunny weekend that's for sure. I don't know where it's going to go beyond this because I don't see many of these straight men following up by writing to their MPs/Senators or doing any of the grassroots slog that feminists and the LGB have been doing for a number of years now. Are they just going to get bored and move on to the next funny troll that grabs their attention? Probably!

Maybe if it's peaked thousands of people it won't matter. My main hope is that it's reached a lot of young people and delivered the message that it's okay to have boundaries when it comes to sexuality and help the upcoming generation to say fuck this shit because I'm fairly sure a lot feel like the 16 year old Tik Tok boy but just daren't say it.

Problem is of course it wasn't written by someone female but that was largely ignored or the information would be lost amongst the comments of wherever it was posted. I remember thinking it was designed to be inflammatory and pit gay men against women. I've not changed my mind on that.

Yes this is my experience. I call myself radfem sometimes but mainly to differentiate from libfem politics, I'm hardly a separatist type - I have a husband and several male children. I've been around radfem circles online and in real life for a few years now and I've met very few women I would describe as hardcore man-haters. As the poster above says it's mostly just a bunch of pissed off women with a variety of views on how to deal with it. People get too hung up on the word radical IMO which essentially means root - as in the root of our oppression is female biology. It's not meant as some kind of anarchist symbolism.

From what I understand from the way r/GC was targeted stuff like CP rarely makes it way past the moderation onto the actual sub. The purpose is to demonstrate to the higher admins that these sites are problematic/white supremacist or whatever else they're trying to claim. The admins are the ones who can then shut the subreddit down and the regular users are none the wiser as to how or why the sub was banned.

If anyone has proof it will be people who have modded subs targeted by AHS but that depends on whether they kept an ongoing record of everything. I'm assuming once they and/or their sub is banned they no longer have a way of accessing anything that might be evidence.

This is why AHS continue to get away with these tactics. That and the fact reddit seems to be rotten from the top down.

I think you have to outline the basis upon which you want to appeal further. I believe an application to appeal can be turned down if it's felt to not have merit at which point the most recent judgement stands.
