Not a sad high school story but a weird one, so I think it fits.

I got sent unsolicited pussy and butt pictures by a high school senior in another town when I was in eighth grade. She wanted to webcam with me (this was in the heyday of Myspace.) I didn't know who the fuck she was or how she knew who I was, I only knew a few kids vaguely in the town she lived in from church activities and summer camps. I didn't have pictures of myself on my profile- I didn't have a webcam 😄

I clicked through her profile and found one older girl from church who we both knew, so that girl was gossiping about me to this chick presumably.

I never answered her, and she tried a couple more times and moved on finally.

Not gonna lie, it was pretty awful.

I'm from kind of a benighted part of the U.S. that has a lot of endemic social problems which make everything, any problem you could have, harder to deal with. For instance, my high school was not only racially segregated but segregated by social class as well. Our honors program consisted of the children of people (usually transplants from other states) who had college degrees and worked professions. So although I grew up in a heavily religious and Republican area, most of the kids I actually interacted with at school were from politically liberal families that weren't religious or were mainline Protestant and Catholic.

The reason I feel the need to clarify is that those kids bullied the shit out of me. I got called a cuntlicker pretty frequently beginning about my Sophomore year, especially by a particular group of boys that I shared a lot of classes with, and I slowly got ostracized over the course of that year to the point that only a handful of people would speak to me. I was one of those kids who spent lunch in the library.

This continued until graduation. The justification for this was that I had been identified by the other kids as a lesbian and I "was not accepting myself." This was the preferred form of bullying at my school and I can remember several boys from my year who got subjected to the same treatment.

I think this situation colored my view of the world permanently, because I have never liked or trusted "allies." There is no way in hell I would ever go to a teacher for help, they were like them. There were no out gay people in my town that I was aware of.

It also drove me to hang out with mostly Evangelical kids and Muslims (we had a lot of Muslim kids for a little town in rural America.) They are homophobic in their own, different way, but at the time they were the kind people who treated me like a human being and I felt safe around them.

Sad to say, I think it made me an asshole. It also, as I got older, made it difficult for me to fit in and find a place in the LGBTQIAA2S+ community when I tried. I'm just too different to relate.

As I said, it has a fundamental premise that is not accurate to real life (we don't live under a feudal system.)

Politicians like it because it absolves them for the failures of their policies.

Rich people like it because it ignores wealth in favor of whining about traits no one can control.

[–]PatsyStone 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

You know exactly what I think of you, I've been blunt about it.

To answer your... statement... fresh vegetables are not cheap in comparison to a lot of grain and dairy staples, especially shelf stable ones. The most important ingredient in middle and working class peoples' diets is time, which they lack. Cooking from scratch is time consuming and is also physical labor, people who work 60+ hours per week and also have other household chores have to budget their time and energy just like everything else. The main reason people prior to the 80s ate at home so much was the prevalence of married women who didn't work outside of the home.

There's also the issue of equipment and storage, cooking at home can get expensive fairly quickly with all of the accoutrements it takes to make a full dinner at home every night. Then you have to have dishes to store it in and a way to reheat it all, unless you're a trained chef who can do three portioned meals a day.

There are many middle and working class families who do this successfully, but they're usual religious fundamentalists and they accomplish it by having the wife be a full-time housekeeper. This is actually how it is in Europe too (minus the religion.) I studied abroad in France and was shocked to see that out of the dozen or so French students we exchanged with only one had a mother who worked. Some worked part-time, but they all cooked and cleaned much more than American moms I've known.

So, there's my opinion. I think a lot of people from wealthy backgrounds lack life experience to understand why people from lower social classes make the decisions that they do. It's because they're in a different situation with different contributing factors, not because there's a simple trick to success they're stupidly missing out on.

It feels that way. I'm talking to somebody else about the U.S. obesity epidemic rn, and honestly the fundamental explanation is that our government doesn't give a shit about us or our health. Our government also aids and abets (and indirectly funds) Antifa, who are literal terrorists. Many Antifa leaders in Portland (their base city here) have been outed as having trained with communist forces in Syria during the Obama Admin.

I wouldn't be surprised if government officials in various E.U. countries have ties to Antifa/Le Black Bloc or whatever they call themselves. My understanding is that they go back decades there, whereas they're a new group here. There seems to be a Syria-Anarchist-Leftist politician pattern.

I'm not obese, lol!

But also, it doesn't work that way here. Our obesity epidemic has to do with lack of worker's rights, the cost of food, the planning of cities, and lack of public education about home economics. The government could cut the number of obese people in half in a decade or so just by limiting work hours for salaried workers.

Americans did not become fat until the late 80s, and it is directly linked to 70s and 80s government changes in labor and agricultural policy. Being fat is shameful and painful, Americans don't do it on purpose.

It's bizarre how our leftists encourage obesity. What are they smoking? Lol.

It's so expensive to remain thin here, only the very wealthy can afford to do so. You have to buy higher quality food and be able to afford expensive gym memberships- plus have the free time to use them, which working people don't have.

There are a lot of political commentators who think the Biden administration is intentionally provoking conservative Americans in the hopes that the latter will lash out violently and give the administration a basis to crack down on them. They want a domestic War on Terror™️ focused on their political opposition (who they are pretending are violent white supremacists, without much proof.)

Bringing blue helmets onto U.S. soil would simultaneously provoke American nationalists, who would see them as invaders and are armed to the teeth already, and give Biden extra troops to hunt his own people with.

So goes the theory. We'll see in six months.

That’s sad to hear. I hear that there are talks of secession in states like Texas. What are the odds of that happening?

Almost nil. Contrary to popular belief, once a state joins the Union there is no legal way for it to leave without triggering a war, Texas included. This was decided by our Civil War.

Texas has the legal right to split itself into up to five smaller states, which give it up to 10 federal Senators- a huge political advantage which would be opposed by the other states. So that's not happening either.

Don't know if you find this comforting or not, but Biden has been floating bringing in the UN to evaluate our police forces. I think it's more likely we'll end up having Irish UN Peacekeepers here than the other way 'round.

Here having an indipendnet home with a garden is considered luxury.

Different things are more expensive in different places, I guess. We have lots of land, so a house with a yard is cheap.

Apartment buildings and sometimes houses (especially old houses) have balconies, but you always pay extra to have them and it's a way to show off being wealthy.

My parents home has a superlong balcony you can get a walk all around the house.

Oh that's very fancy! Must have cost so much!

To be honest, I'm scared as fuck my mother is going to develop cancer.

That dread of what the future might bring with our parents ☹️ I'd say that's the main reason it's so taboo here. People think it's dirty and you're risking cancer by doing it. They also think you're giving them cancer by smoking near them, so people aren't shy about harassing smokers. There are smokers here, it's just looked down on as shameful and low-class. That also makes smoking look rebellious and cool, so the cycle continues.

It's a stereotype pretentious Americans hold.

Smoking is taboo here, so it's a luxury Europeans can afford to indulge in (in our eyes.) Obviously you're all so educated and modern, all you do is think deep thoughts and lounge around instead of working like plebs 😉 Balconies are also unusual here and are a sign of wealth, but they're everywhere in Europe.

I used to be a pretty active gender critical feminist, who has now given up on them, and even I can't recall much that could be considered biphobia. Feminism has a lot of inherent problems, but the ones causing them are usually snotty upperclass straight women who demand blind obedience from other women.

In feminist circles lesbians are sort of shunted aside and bisexual women are completely ignored. On the other hand, in gay spaces where feminist lesbians dominate, hatred of bisexual women is palpable. Those spaces are few and far between, thank God.

It’s easier to get back in the closet if you say you’re bisexual than gay if shit hit the fan.

Agreed. I do also think that's why they'll stick their toe in the water with me, the bisexual lady at work. I probably won't reject them, and if I do I don't know their friends or family so I can't really hurt them. I'm about as safe as safe gets.

but some people, gay or straight, are just ignorant.

That's the truth.

I always take that question as more "I'm same-sex attracted, do you hate me?" more than "I literally think I am literally bisexual, does that sound right to you?" They're more fishing to gauge my reaction to the confession of same-sex attraction.

I think when I take it in stride and don't do whatever they're afraid of, it gives them more confidence and makes them feel safer to talk to other people, especially gay men.

Again, this doesn't bother me. There's a difference between kids navigating possible social rejection with identities and grown adults scamming people by intentionally lying. I do remember picking up a bizarre 1940s-era book once at a used bookstore about the epidemic of "bisexual" men at the time who cheated on their wives with other men. I should have bought it. I bet if you read between the lines they'd mostly just be gay.

The gay men who refuse to believe bisexuality is real because young gay men lie about it so much are just self-centered. It ain't all you! The label wouldn't exist for you to use in the first place if there weren't real men like that.

I had remembered you mentioning that, so I thought I'd ask you to weigh in. I'm relieved to hear your experience was more innocent than the voluntary corrective rape scenario this OP brought up.

I work with a lot of teenagers in my industry and a few times over the years I've had a guy come to me saying "I think I might be bisexual." I always take them on their word, try to be supportive and kind- you know, buck them up, they usually need it. I'll look out for them for a while. To my knowledge they're all gay now.

I don't mind this situation because it doesn't hurt me, but bisexual men often bring it up as a bone of contention with gay men. I think about it every time people start grousing about definitions.

On the other hand the affirmation/promotion of having sex even if you're not attracted to your partner to please them.

Oh my God I find this so deeply disturbing. They're coaching each other into willingly being raped.

Are these partners opposite sex? The reason I ask is because I've noticed a distinct pattern of teenage asexuals growing up and being gay later. There seems to be a significant percentage of closeted LGBs calling themselves asexual.

Honestly, think about it from the bar's perspective. These people were paying to be there and helping keep the bar operating. That's literal financial support to the lesbian community.

Lesbian bars have gone under because it's no longer economically feasible to have an establishment cater to such a small community. The overhead for owning a brick and mortar business, and one that sells mainly alcohol at that, is so high they need to be packed several nights a week to make a profit.

The ones who have survived have done so by selectively allowing outsiders in if they behave. A lot of times that hasn't worked out and transbians and pervy straight men have driven lesbians away (like a bar I know that has now rebranded as a karaoke bar in recent years.) It sounds like this bar's owners have found a good middle ground. At least they're still here.

This reminds me of a lot of the anti-lesbian agitation that went on on the old bisexual sub on Reddit. Petty resentments getting brought up again and again and people being rewarded with attention and praise for joining in on the dogpile. I've spent a lot of time in bisexual spaces sticking up for lesbians or trying to present an alternative read on bad behavior that focuses on the individuals involved and not the demographic as a whole.

For all of the disagreements I've had over the years, I sincerely believe lesbians and kind and caring women who only want good things for themselves and others. It's not that complicated. Love you girls 😘
