If you want to subvert media control, online is the way to do it.

It's nice that they're doing this, but several of the people associated with this event are elderly and I think as a political strategy street marches aren't viable right now. It's outdated as a tactic.

This can be useful in other ways- mostly networking.

The only sympathetic press they'll get if they get harassed is from right wing media in the U.S.

There are plenty of transwomen and transmen who are homosexuals, who I'm sure aren't going to approve of this and will try to sabotage it. Not to mention people who identify as homosexuals but know they aren't.

Hopefully they've thought about security a little.

They've already shot themselves in the foot by declaring this a "homosexual exclusive event." I wouldn't attend or support this event if I lived in New York, I would be stepping on toes and commiting various social sins if I even attempted to. It may be that bisexuals are allowed if they're gay enough, possibly, and can blend in and not attract too much attention.

I think it's easy to forget that subcultures often don't interpret the world the same way, or with the same criteria. Christians don't care about gay dating or relationships, it's all sin. They're worried about the sexual attraction. So, if they aren't somehow influenced by the gay community, they don't care about the flavor of gay.

In my personal experience, the term "bisexual" doesn't really exist outside of the gay community (and I'm assuming urban areas.) People for whom the gay rights movement is culturally alien, say a minority religious sect, don't differentiate between people who experience same-sex attractive exclusively and not exclusively. It's all gay and it's all bad.

[–]PatsyStone 13 insightful - 1 fun13 insightful - 0 fun14 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

It rubs me the wrong way. Political problems need political solutions. Gender critical political views do not affect your personal life or the people around you with anything near the profundity of sexual orientation. Yes, gender critical views are discriminated against. All dissenting views get treated like this.

Y'all might not be aware, but in the lead up to the 2020 U.S. Presidential election conservative "coming out" videos were a huge trend. I found it shallow and offensive. This is also shallow and offensive.

I'll say it and be the bad guy, since nobody else is going to. This is counterproductive and a step in the wrong direction.

If you want to limit your event to people to are actively in same sex relationships, that makes sense. Banning a subset of people who are in same sex relationships is crazy, which I'm not sure they've thought of or are intentionally doing. As witch hunting lesbians can tell you, there are many non homosexuals in relationships with women who are passing themselves off as lesbians.

What you'll get at this "exclusive homosexual event" is a mixed bag of homosexuals and people who are passing as homosexual. You are giving them every incentive to lie, too, since this is the real pride for actual gay people in gay relationships.

She seems like a cool woman who would be wonderful to talk to... but, this is a bad idea. You don't have "comings out" for political opinions, they aren't an innate trait.

CENSORSHIP. This woman needs to be campaigning against censorship, both classic censorship of the press and the puritanical self-censorship that leftists/liberals engage in (not sure what they're called in the U.K.)

It's like pulling teeth trying to get a middle aged American Democrat to read a "bad" article from a "bad" source, regardless of how vital the information in it is. You'd get a Baptist to read Lolita first. Liberal Americans are now like a solid year behind on a lot of news stories because they won't engage with outside thought.

The first couple of minutes on this video follow her detailing mistaken beliefs she held due to censorship of criticism of transwomen. I knew Caitlyn Jenner wasn't a woman, not because I'm the realest or a great intellectual thinker, but because I had already plugged into GC circles online before that happened. I was Catholic before that, and Catholic bloggers and columnists were already fisking trans ideology on a regular basis around 2012-ish. They were making most of the same arguments around that time that this woman makes in this video, a decade later. Because it's true!

Well, his whole closeting story and the nature of abuse he receives just feels familiar. He dated a girl at Harvard, at least, and managed to stay functioning while closeted for a decade afterward. He was in Afghanistan and then ran a political campaign. Then he comes out apparently at the time he's decided he wants to get married, and finds a husband within a year. I'm certainly cynical and harsh, and I don't think he did anything wrong, but coming out in your thirties is more the realm of bisexuals than homosexuals.

It would also explain why he's so closed off and aloof with his gay identity. He isn't gay. A lot of people seem to think he might have Aspergers, which I don't think is likely. His interests are social- languages, public service, politics. Aspies have a hard time learning languages.

I think the simpler answer is he seems awkward and uncomfortable with gay culture because it doesn't come naturally to him and he spent most of his youth separated from it. He at some point realized he wanted to partner with a man and then did so. Not a bad thing! But I wonder if that's what's up with him. He's still closeted, just in a roomier closet.

I've seen interviews where he talks about the military, or Southbend, he lights up and is very animated and engaging. He's obviously being propped up as a sort of official gay role model, so I can't help but play armchair psychologist or whatever. It's too tempting 😉

From what I can tell it's a class/cultural thing with wealthier people who identify as liberal. There seems to be a presumption that you are a bad person, like you were up to something- or maybe that you're lying. Harassment is acceptable if it's done under the guise of acceptance."You need to accept yourself," spoken in a derisive tone, gossiping about someone excessively.

The most egregious example I've ever heard of was an office I didn't work at. The boss was a closeted lesbian supposedly, I did meet her and she certainly could have been (she was very nice.) I knew several of her employees and they obsessed about her closeting. It was a main topic of discussion between them for months whenever I saw them. Why wouldn't she just come out? Why was she so sad and pathetic? Everyone knows! She's hurting the company (direct quote!)

Their main concern seemed to be that she was unethical in some way. I remember arguing one time that she wasn't violating any sort of professional ethics by not being open about being a lesbian, she would have to date an employee or something in order for her sexuality to actually be a problem. They seemed impressed by the logic of that.

I'm not an anthropologist by any means, but I'm slightly separated from that culture so it sticks out when people casually lash out at others because they "came out late." Not a thing outside of those circles.

The Stranger! Y'all, The Stranger used to be so cool. It was up there with The Village Voice, alternative newspapers I daydreamed about writing for when I was a kid.

Now it's sad, and kind of uptight and pearl-clutchy. This entire piece is fisking wealthy young people's etiquette like it's some philosophical cornerstone. This is like Anti-Oscar Wildean. He would have a field day with this woman.

She makes me think of Miss Brill, from the Ngaio Marsh story. Deluded and out of touch, scandalized by reality whenever it peeks through.

In a nutshell.

She's almost cartoonishly corrupt, her father was the mayor of Baltimore in the 1950s and her brother was mayor in the late 60s.

She represents San Francisco in the House, and has since before both of us were born.

Yeah, I do think some of it just stems from a lack of empathy or personal experience. Your sister may not have cared you were gay, but it's not all her. There are bigger consequences to accepting sexual orientation than your siblings' opinions 😜

Good for your mom reigning her in, sometimes people just need to back off. Now she knows and she can handle the same situation more wisely. Kind of curious, is she older than you? You came out before she did?

I certainly don’t like him, for many reasons, but him being gay is of no interest to me whatsoever.

That's sort of the impression I get from people here. He's not charismatic and his policies aren't popular or unpopular (he's the Transportation Secretary right now.) No one is interested in his marriage. He isn't hated or anything, though.

Would he be a good president? I don’t have much faith in that.

As someone pointed out upthread, Pete was selected by Pelosi as a potential future president after Clinton's loss. I think he was specifically chosen as a puppet. Republicans don't need homophobia to turn the electorate off of him, he has plenty of flaws as a candidate.

And the irony is that Putin would still treat Buttigieg a lot better than Chasten does.

Fuckin' brutal 😖

this a thing? I would love to hear more about it, if it is.

It's always been like this with certain types of people who consider themselves straight allies. I grew up in a rural, conservative area that had a lot of "liberals" who really didn't understand gay issues but blindly supported gay political causes because it was part of a self image and a lifestyle they were taking part in.

They'd sniff you out, push you to identify yourself, if you refused they'd bully and harass you.

I had a teacher like this at my high school who was an asshole to me and a (future) gay guy in our class. She looked down on us, I guess because we weren't coming out to her satisfaction. I was being bullied and called a lesbian by a different boy in front of a group and this teacher stepped in and told him I wasn't ready for that, with this shit-eating grin on her face. The tone was very much "she's a lesbian but she can't deal with it, isn't that pathetic?" Fucking humiliating, plus it was essentially an endorsement from a gay authority to keep bullying me.

This same woman had publicly defended a lesbian prom queen a few years earlier during a big scandal where she wanted to take a girl to the dance and wear a tuxedo. Whoop dee doo, still a nasty cunt. Fuck her.

His staff is almost all straight women. Just, like, it is. I'm suspecting they're out of their depth trying to use gay men's relationship dynamics as political messaging. They seem to look down on their own candidate, too, who is a grown ass man that obviously doesn't want to star in a soap opera.

Their relationship will not last. There's a social taboo among wealthy American liberals, you have to announce to your social circle that you're gay before the age of about 20 or something is deeply wrong with you. Even 20 is getting a little old, but it's the cut off in my estimation.

Either you're severely mentally ill or an immoral person who deserves to be punished (in their eyes.) Pete Buttigieg's husband, who purports to love him, is publicly participating in punishing him for breaking the taboo. Buttigieg did not publicly announce he was gay until he was 33, and already the mayor of his city.

Might being closeted into his 30s been painful? Complicated? The best option he had? Apparently no. Pete's husband has declared him a selfish and conniving liar, and talked down to him like a toddler while doing so. Chasten is apparently one of the good gays.

I think Pete will quietly dump him February of 2025. I couldn't live with someone like that.

Lol I love this community for that exact reason. I'm constantly surprised by who I agree with- and why! Truth is medicine, for sure.

I heard somewhere recently (probably from one of the LGB-friendly therapists) that many detransitioning women report having terrible relationships with their parents, particularly their mothers-- and their mothers deny any such thing, and insist that their relationship is great; the mothers willfully turn a blind eye. This article strikes me as the perfect example of this pattern.

I'm not surprised to hear that at all. Fits what I've seen in person based off of the few trans-identified people I grew up with.

Thanks, gay dude, btw for posting this. I'm glad I got to see it, it's valuable to read even if I dislike the person who wrote it.

I get that this is a propaganda documentary in preparation for his 2024 campaign, but seriously:

Chasten, holding the couple’s one-eyed puggle upright in his lap, tells Moss to ask Buttigieg about his identity. “He did everything to climb every ladder without being his authentic self,” he says. Buttigieg didn’t come out of the closet until 2015, when he was 33, already mayor. “You spent so much of your life hiding who you really were — did you feel like you were able to be your true self on the campaign trail?”

“Do you think he’s ready to answer that question?” Moss asks. “Can he answer that?”

“He should. You can try.”

Buttigieg walks in the room. Before he leaves, Chasten turns to his husband.

“Don’t bull---- us, Peter,” he says

My bisexual nightmare! If I was with a lesbian who looked down on me like this, who treated me with such disdain, I would dump her. You can't treat your partner like this.

Again, this is a performance intended for potential voters- which makes it worse!

I'm lost at why all the straight women who make up Buttigieg's staff seem to think coming out after 30 is some sort of moral aberration. They made a massive issue out if this, unprompted, in his last campaign.

I can guarantee voters mostly aren't aware there are social taboos in liberal social circles about gay people "coming out late."

I also disagree with the assertion in the lede that Pete is a "gifted politician." He sucks at this and would be happier, I think, quietly working a professional job where he wasn't constantly having to jump through hoops to please homophobic liberals.

In my opinion, many of these teenagers were "terminally online" even pre-COVID because it was the only space they could access without parental overinvolvement.

Completely right. Modern middle class American kids aren't allowed to leave their houses without supervision. It fucks them up and delays maturation until they're already well into adulthood. Add to that the intense pressure they're put under by their parents and peers, you have a recipe for trouble.

Transitioning is similar to anorexia in this way, I think. Anorexia is fundamentally about control.

Teen girls (for instance) who live in emotionally stifling environments, especially where they aren't allowed to express anger openly, and who have no agency in their lives will obsess about what food they take in because they have no control over anything else. Being thin brings social rewards with it as well, positive attention and praise.

Anorexia is also frequently connected to discomfort with sexuality, or a desire to rid oneself of sexual urges you can't process. Victims of sexual abuse and same-sex attracted women are much likelier to develop an eating disorder than the population at large.

Honestly, she's on our side politically but this woman is callous. Mental illness doesn't just crop up out of nowhere, and this woman just doesn't care that her son is suffering. She's dismissive, belittles him, and does her best to minimize his social alienation. She's gaslighting more than anything else.

There are hints in the article that the social milieu she's raising him in is driving him crazy and she can't accept it. Teenagers from wealthy families in the U.S. famously have terrible mental illness rates due to rigid social expectations, lack of control over their lives, lack of age appropriate independence, and the soul crushing college admissions process. Is she intending to change her worldview or become a wiser person?

So much upper middle class white lady cope! One trope after another! "He's gifted," "our family is full of successful aspie types," "the girls are just empowered and intellectual, so of course he's drawn to them."

I get that other people may identify with her, but it's harsh reality. I find women like this repulsive and I'm not sympathetic.
