That's why I said "good therapist". It's sad-- and dangerous-- that parents have to treat their own kids' mental illnesses at home because most therapists are either on board the trans train or else they're afraid to say anything that could get them in trouble. And no, I am not supporting any form of conversion therapy here. I am absolutely against those barbaric old-school practices where effeminate boys were punished for playing with dolls, or where teenagers were sent to pray-away-the-gay camp. Girls like the ones described in this article need to explore why they hate themselves, why they have difficulty making friends in the real world, why they are drawn to the sick and twisted corners of the internet, and how they can learn to cope. Some of them probably need antidepressants, but none of them should be on T.

I think one of the keys here is that the mom was mostly going at this alone. Ideally, this kid should have been in therapy and the therapist would have uncovered what was really going on. The therapist also would have helped the mother work through her own anxiety and feelings and put the brakes on the mom when she was overcontrolling. But from the sound of it, it took a long time to find a good therapist, and even then this person was out of state.

[–]WildwoodFlower 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

First of all, I think you are going down the right path by seeing a therapist. Second of all, since this woman was complimenting your pubic hair, of all things, I absolutely understand why you would take that to mean she's interested. Since other people noticed that she seemed to like you that way, then there probably is/was something there. But clearly, this woman has issues. The fact that she was messing around with a 60-year-old dude when she was in her 20s is proof of that. And no, that doesn't mean you are disgusting. I doubt it has anything to do with you at all. If I had to guess, it probably means the 60-year-old had $$$ and she wanted a sugar daddy. Or if the guy was her boss or her professor or something like that, it could have been some weird sexual harassment type of deal. Plenty of woman have sex with men for reasons that have nothing to do with the woman getting any physical pleasure out of it.

Anyhow, I'm sorry you are going through such a bad time because of this woman. I hope you can find someone who will treat you right, because you deserve it!

[–]WildwoodFlower 15 insightful - 2 fun15 insightful - 1 fun16 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

I'm over 50, and nearly all of the lesbians I know have not only slept with men, they were also married to them at one time. Some of them had children with those men. I think there are more gold stars among the younger generations, so you could restrict your dating pool to women who have only been with other women. Or to virgins who haven't yet been with anyone.

I think hearing a girlfriend talk about the men she'd be with if she were straight is bothersome on a different level. It sounds to me like she was trying to stir you up and drive you crazy with that kind of talk. It's one thing to have slept with men, but it's something else to go on and on about it knowing it upsets your girlfriend. Did you ever ask her if she was bi? To me, it sounds like she might be.

[–]WildwoodFlower 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

You are attracted to who you are attracted to, and you have every right to those attractions. You are allowed to be selfish when it comes to figuring out who you want to be with, and who turns you off. For me, the worst thing about the TQ+ crowd are their personalities, not their genitals (which I don't want to see) and not the way they dress (which isn't my style, but whatever). I can't really see myself being friends with them the way I am friends with gay men or straight people. I just can't deal with their drama, their cultish groupthink, or their never ending need for attention and validation. I don't know if these things bother you the way they bother me. But I don't blame anyone who wants to steer clear of these folks.

The only one I know well is someone from high school. "Louis" was a basic preppy honors student type. I knew him in the "gender bender" 80s, but he never showed any interest in any of that music or the people who made it. He was a basic suburban straight white boy who was into Rush, Van Halen, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Fast forward to the late 2010s, when Louis started using the name Louise, along with they/them pronouns, and posting a lot of selfies with makeup, wigs, feminine clothing, etc. I also noticed in a few of the photos that "Louise" has boobs now. Sure, a lot of overweight men over 50 grow man boobs, but these are too big to be that. They also aren't perfect and perky enough to be the result of a boob job, so I'm thinking that Louis is on hormones.

All I know is that there has been this bizarre, flirty dynamic between the two of us and it's gone on for years. I have never experienced anything like this with a straight friend before. [–]WildwoodFlower 21 insightful - 1 fun21 insightful - 0 fun22 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

If a transwoman changes into a suit and tie (or a sweatshirt and jeans), washes off her makeup, and takes off her wig, then the world will treat her the same as any man. If a transwoman came out as an adult, chances are she is still making more $$$ than her female co-workers. Her childhood and adolescence would have been completely different from what non-trans girls experience. Even transgirls who come out at a young age don't have the same childhood experiences as non-trans girls. Transkids are treated like transkids, not like typical boys or girls.

If Jazz and El Page actually were that developmentally advanced as toddlers, then their current issues are most likely due to their extreme giftedness rather than "born in the wrong body." Highly gifted children tend to be anxious, extremely sensitive perfectionists who overthink every little damn thing. They also have difficulty relating to other children. There is also some overlap between the characteristics of giftedness and autism/Asperger's. But they're still little kids and they need adults to provide them with guidance instead of agreeing that yes, Jazz, you really are a girl because boys don't like sparkly toys and Broadway showtunes.

[–]WildwoodFlower 12 insightful - 1 fun12 insightful - 0 fun13 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

It depends. If her hair is just a weird shade of red, I've been there and done that. That's what the 90s were for! :D I also have a straight hippie friend who dyes her hair lavender because her natural color right now is whitish-gray (she's 70). There aren't too many goths around these days, but I knew some back in the day who were into various shades of burgundy and purple. (Again, that's what the 90s were for.) But yeah, I know there's a link between unnaturally colored hair and being gender special. The ones I see around here also tend to wear very childish-looking pajamas in public. Actually, I think the pajamas put me off more than the hair. There is something deeply disturbing about adults who dress like children. Besides, I am just not attracted to people who would wear their pajamas outside the house. Maybe I'm just a snob?

I also don't know any parent of an actual female child who lets her out of the house wearing makeup unless it's Halloween, she is performing in a dance recital, or is appearing at some other venue where the makeup is part of her costume. Makeup is for girls who are at least in middle school, not for children. Ditto for all these trans kids with dyed pink hair.

Yes, I would date a bisexual woman as long as she is single and monogamous. I am not interested in being somebody's side dish. Then again, the same is true for any lesbian I might date.

I figure if I restrict myself to a "lesbians-only" dating pool, that leaves me with a very small number of women to choose from. There just aren't a lot of lesbians out there, and all of the ones I know are married/partnered. And just because someone is a lesbian, that doesn't automatically makes us compatible.

If I don't see any rainbow flags, I wonder if I could feel truly at home in that place. I like the rainbow flag. To me, it signals that I am in a safe place. But the rest of those flags are meaningless to me. I have trouble remembering which one is which.

I am not even interested in men and there are more/only men asking me out. So I can see where the bi girls are coming from on this.

Unpopular opinion: We need to stop using the term "cis" to refer to a biological man/woman. by [deleted] in LGBDropTheT

I have heard someone say "cishet" to describe straight people. But I figure if straight people don't like it, that's their problem, not mine.

I came across an account on twitter asking lesbians to post their comp-het crushes and women are posting pics of men they drool over. How do you all feel about this? by Wot in Lesbians

[–]WildwoodFlower 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I couldn't tell from the tweets if those "lesbians" were sexually fantasizing about those celebs, if they just thought those guys were cute, or if they want to be them because the straight girls at school like them. My main takeaway from those tweets is that those "lesbians" were very, very young. Or maybe very, very immature. I ended up thinking of them as girls rather than as women.

For me, David Bowie always felt like someone I knew in a previous life. Or on another planet. There was this sense of "everyone thinks he's weird, everyone thinks I'm weird, but in some other time and place we would not be weird." But it was never sexual.

Does that make sense?

We are living in such a crazy world, aren't we? People who aren't lesbians are calling themselves lesbians while women who actually are lesbians are identifying as trans, genderqueer, or nonbinary.

Most of the ones I saw in that Twitter thread were teenagers with crushes on girly-looking K-pop stars. I don't know what that means as far as whether these kids are lesbians or bi or what. They'll figure it out eventually.

Shrug... I don't see how it's any different from gay men who adore Madonna, Cher, Judy Garland, Diana Ross, Britney Spears, Princess Diana, etc. Gay men don't usually call it a "crush" but it's pretty much the same thing.

I am suspicious of any celebrity who pushes their kid into the spotlight like this, especially when they're doing it to draw attention to themselves and their wokeness. Nobody normal wants their child's sexuality or gender identity to be discussed among strangers in a public forum.

Lesbians who only only want to date the female sex only do so because they don’t know they’re actually attracted to trans women. by yousaythosethings in LGBDropTheT

[–]WildwoodFlower 26 insightful - 3 fun26 insightful - 2 fun27 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

Seriously, what exactly am I supposed to be attracted to when I "reconsider" these MTFs? Most trans women still look like males. The few who "pass" have had so much cosmetic surgery that they look like plastic Barbie dolls. I am not interested in dating either one. And that's not even getting into all the gender dysphoria and psychological issues that I, frankly, don't have the patience to deal with. If I wanted to be with a male-bodied person, I would just take the easy route and find myself a nice, normal straight guy. But I don't want to be with a male-bodied person.

Is it possible to go to the media about the discrimination against lesbians by reddit? by mangosplums in Lesbians

[–]WildwoodFlower 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I think approaching AfterEllen is a good idea. You might even want to ask if they accept articles from freelancers and, if so, you could suggest writing the article yourself.

The one thing I strongly advise against is taking this to any right-wing media outlet.

The “Gold Star” Problem by WordsHaveMeanings in Lesbians

[–]WildwoodFlower 17 insightful - 1 fun17 insightful - 0 fun18 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I never heard of gold stars until maybe a year or so ago. I've only seen it discussed on lesbian forums, not on bi women's forums. (Keep in mind, though, that I don't spend a lot of time on bi forums.) In most cases, the women I've seen bringing it up are gold stars. Unfortunately, some of them (not all) tend to be rather smug or judgemental about it. I don't think being a gold star makes someone a better lesbian or a more authentic lesbian. Most of the lesbians I know personally were married to men at one time. Most grew up in a different era, where getting married was just something women did, whether they really wanted to or not. In other cases, it was like some kind of do-it-yourself conversion therapy. I also know gay men who married women for similar reasons. And no, these people are not bisexual. They are now all happily settled down with same-sex partners and they have no intention of going back to heterosexuality.

What exactly is Ovarit? Is it a lesbian forum? Or do they just talk about gender critical stuff like the LGB Alliance? (I don't know about all of you, but I am tired of hearing about trans issues. To quote the Smiths circa 1985: "It says nothing to me about my life.")

This woman is sending you such mixed signals (hell, they are beyond signals), so I can see why you're wondering what's going on with her. Maybe there is something specific about the age gap that makes her nervous. For example, maybe she doesn't want to get involved with a younger woman because she is afraid a younger woman might want kids? Or, on the flip side, maybe she is afraid a younger woman won't want to get seriously involved? I don't know... I think you should talk it out with her.

[–]WildwoodFlower 19 insightful - 1 fun19 insightful - 0 fun20 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I don't know Page, and most people in Hollywood are flaky, so I try not to get emotionally invested in any of them. But this does hit me in a weird way, because "lesbian Ellen Page" is kind of what I look/dress like (except I'm a lot older). I never even thought of myself as butch, just basically androgynous, and definitely not trans. I guess what's bothering me is how people (especially potential dates/partners) might look at me now and what kind if assumptions they'll make. But fortunately, I'm over 50 and I am not interested in younger women, so I don't have to deal with a lot of the pressures that the lesbians under 30 in this thread have to deal with.

I'm seeing a lot of lesbians and gay men (especially married couples) getting fired up about Amy Coney Barrett and how she and her fellow right-wing SCOTUS justices might wreak havoc on marriage equality. There is also the election coming up in six days, so a lot of lesbians are focusing their efforts on that front.

Religious and gay: what did you do with that? by emilyprentiss in Lesbians

[–]WildwoodFlower 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I can understand the appeal of staying in your current church and trying to change people's hearts and minds. And that's great if you happen to be in a church that is starting the journey to becoming more inclusive. However, if the powers-that-be within your denomination aren't likely to budge, I would recommend leaving and finding an affirming church. Why subject yourself to institutionalized homophobia in the hopes that things might change when you can be part of a welcoming community where you can worship with other lesbians and gay men?

Although many churches are closed due to Covid, you can still check them out online and maybe stream some of their services. It will give you a feel for what each church is like, and hopefully you will find one that is a good fit. If you live in or near a "gayborhood", the mainline Protestant churches in that area are probably the best place to start.
