I'm glad Lindsay found this, but I also think he's being a bit obtuse in looking for a smoking gun. The idea of "sexual inversion" had been around since before John Money. I will lazily grab a general description of it from Wikipedia for the sake of convenience:

Sexual inversion is a theory of homosexuality popular primarily in the late 19th and early 20th century. Sexual inversion was believed to be an inborn reversal of gender traits: male inverts were, to a greater or lesser degree, inclined to traditionally female pursuits and dress and vice versa. The sexologist Richard von Krafft-Ebing described female sexual inversion as "the masculine soul, heaving in the female bosom".

There you have it: "the masculine soul." That's the smoking gun. This is the invention of gender identity as a way to try to account for homosexuality. Even though it ends up being discredited as an explanation for sexual orientation, it gets resurrected by Queer Theory in the 1980s when they go back and re-read all the German sexologists.

It's not some obscure idea that had to be narrowly funneled through John Money and/or Gayle Rubin. John Money took the idea and turned it into a medical procedure.

Well, the fact remains that modern gay identity appeared at around the same time as modern industrial capitalism and urbanization, in contrast to a more rural, agrarian way of life. And it was the same transformation of work and family that allowed women to live independently, as opposed to being bound to the family by childbearing and child-rearing responsibilities.

And, of course, capitalism created the smartphones that, in turn, created (or warped) the minds of Gen Z. I don't see too many of them wanting to go live off-grid in the wilderness. That would be too scary.

Like it or not gay couplings do not produce children. It stands to reason that any centralized planning will only value such relationships when they have a situation where they don't need more children.

Gay people are really too small a percentage of the population to have a great impact on the birth rate, and lesbian couples can easily produce children with a minimal sperm donation. If a government really wanted to increase the birth rate by any means, one step would be to outlaw contraception for heterosexual couples.

Gay rights is a football that's been tossed around all over the place. I've seen arguments to the effect that capitalism is fundamental to gay identity because wage labor makes it possible for individuals to live outside the structure of the traditional family.

GLAAD erased the gays a while back. It's been on the trans-train for years, and it's the same all across the board in these organizations.

My undergraduate university used to have an LGB Resources Office. Now, it's the "Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity." It's run by a trans-man, and all their programming relates to gender transition services and pronouns. Gays and lesbians are hardly mentioned on their website.

I've likened it to building a house and coming home one day to find someone else living there. They've changed the locks and now insist that they own the house. In fact, they've always owned it because they really built it. That's the level of gaslighting you get from these people. They will look in your face and tell you that without trans people, you wouldn't have any gay rights.

This is what happened to a friend and classmate of mine who transitioned FtM in the 1990s, and that was back when they actually still carefully vetted people. "He" didn't try to foist any of the gender ideology stuff on us. He just told friends that he was changing his name. Fast-forward 20 years, and his(her) body developed bad reactions to testosterone, so he had to stop it. He told me that he thought transition had been a mistake and that he was still dealing with the same issues he had before. But he was known academically as a trans-male and knew he would be hated if he detransitioned, so he ended up committing suicide.

"Gay voice" is an accent, and accents are learned, period. Any sane linguist would tell you that. Now, learning accents is mostly subconscious, but it can also be conscious, as in the case of actors or people who decide to change their native accent for various reasons.

If you listen to what we call "gay voice," it's a mixture of Valley Girl California and African-American Vernacular English, with some likely additions from the speech patterns of female Golden Era movie stars, like Bette Davis, Judy Garland, or Rosalind Russell. Stage voices feature those peculiar exaggerations. It's possible that a subculture of gay men in metropolitan areas acquired those vocal mannerisms from theater or film, aping their favorite stars.

I know plenty of gay men who don't speak with the gay accent at all, so, to me, the idea that it's innate is absurd/ridiculous.

I think it's more about the porn than necessarily about the sexuality. We know that things like porn provide a neurotransmitter reward to the brain, but with repeated use of the same kind, the reward dwindles. The brain wants novelty. So these guys start to look at trans porn. And maybe these guys haven't tried man-on-man sex at all. It's just a fantasy to them. Or maybe this is a gradual way for men to discover their bisexuality.

I spent 20 years working in academia. The nastiest fights, by far, I ever witnessed in person were between female professors around feminist topics. They would rip each other to shreds. You'd go to a talk, and after the talk, during the question and answer session, one of them would stand up in the audience and go after the speaker. They'd start yelling at each other. I never saw two male professors behave this way.

A friend of mine used to joke about the bullshit feminist fantasy that "magic peace rays" would shoot out of women's vaginas and turn the world into a matriarchal paradise.

This is also where we started to lose the ethos of principled disagreement and rational discussion of controversial ideas at universities. It was a male intellectual tradition that you could argue things out while still abiding by rules of conduct and mutual respect. The more women, especially feminists, that entered academia, the more anyone who disagreed with you became evil. Women have a lot to do with how we lost freedom of speech on campuses.

One thing I've learned over the last 30+ years about civil rights work is that the people who do the work and the people who claim to have done the work are often two quite different sets of people. For example, in college, I and three others co-founded the first public Gay & Lesbian organization on campus. We advertised our meetings, and a successor to that organization still exists (although now taken over by TQ+). I had my picture on the front of the school newspaper protesting ROTC's policy of kicking out students if they found out they were gay.

But when the school started doing an LGBT history project ten years ago, no one knew our names at all. All the paperwork related to us had been lost.

One thing that Sargeant fails to mention is the story that when Rivera learned that people like Duberman and Carter were rigorously researching Stonewall, he tried to get others who'd been there when it started to lie and say he'd been there -- because it was Rivera who'd gradually been inflating his own activist résumé over the intervening decades. He knew he'd be caught.

Rivera does deserve some credit for trying to help gay street kids, but, as Sargeant points out, it was a short-lived shit-show. And there were other people in the gay community helping street kids at the time who don't get any credit.

Add to that the fact that Rivera was obviously mentally-ill. He couldn't even take care of himself. Anyone who's seen any film footage of interviews with him should be able to suss that out pretty easily. All the relatively normal, average people with jobs who worked for Gay Rights . . . we're just not interesting enough.

But Rivera checks the right boxes, so the current generation will give him credit. It's the story they've been told is the right kind of story.

The takeover of academia by the woke was not so much planned as a conspiracy as it was a natural consequence of the way the tenure-track professor hiring process works. Congress is hauling university presidents in to demand they shut down free speech.

More broadly, it's become a tit-for-tat game. It was leftist academics who started calling for safe spaces and speech codes in the 1990s. (I know because I was in graduate school with them.) What's become rather glaringly obvious is that speech codes and their applications have become extremely biased in favor of some groups and against others. The point behind Stefanik's questioning was really that the decision has been made that Jews aren't the right kind of minority they would need to be to qualify for the same protections as "BIPOC" and TQ+.

The best outcome would be for universities to have a reset back to the less restrictive campus speech rules of the 1980s, and that's where the university presidents fell into the trap set for them. They were deliberately placed in a position where they couldn't both defend freedom of expression and defend restrictive campus speech codes. And we could all seem them trapped and stuttering, unable to articulate principled, coherent answers.

From what I've seen, Gay's failure to cite some sources is probably minor, so they got her on technicalities. The bigger problem is how campuses privilege the sensitivities of some students over others in an attempt to perform social justice while stifling freedom of speech.

I witnessed all this start to snowball at universities in the 1990s. The problem is that what Zakaria calls for is not going to happen because the ideologues are too deeply entrenched at all levels of the university system in faculty, administration, and admissions. They will protect their careers. Faculty will only hire new faculty that support their ideology. Only pressure from outside the existing university system can correct this.

This is why the guy whose girlfriend is trying to leave him decides to kills her. It's because he needs to be seen as someone who "has" a woman. The idea that she doesn't want him is perceived by him as a deadly threat to his self-image, so he kills her in retaliation.

That's the thing you have to get about pathological narcissists; they perceive threats to their self-image as someone literally trying to kill them, and they respond accordingly. To them, it seems like self-defense. This is why you get mobs of angry trans activists trying to attack people who refuse to validate them.

One of the problems with transition is that the transitioner still knows who and what they are, and they know that, for the most part, everyone else knows, too. For example, did anyone not notice the transwoman on Jeopardy yesterday, the one who was taller than everyone else in the studio and had obviously male shoulders, a male voice, and male facial bone structure? They know they're pretending. They know that everyone else knows they're pretending. It's corrosive to one's state of mind over the years.

I had a friend in grad school who transitioned FtM. Years later, he told me that he was having to quit taking testosterone because his body was finally rejecting it, causing health problems. He also said that he still suffered from the mental health problems he thought transition would cure. He ended up committing suicide.

I agree with you that Doctor Who had largely run out of plot ideas. The thing they forgot from the classic Who like Troughton - Baker was that a big part of the charm of the show was its quirky British-ness. The modern writers decided to take the Doctor from being an eccentric space wanderer to being a superhero who always has to be running around like a maniac. People didn't watch Doctor Who for flashy Sci-Fi; they watched it for how Tom Baker or David Tennant could deliver a witty line.

I can't watch Doctor Who anymore. I quit when Jodie Whittaker (who was never a great actress to begin with) took over. All watching it now does is ruin the memories of it I had from the times the show was good.

There was always some wokeness coming from Russell T. Davies, but he's now gone off the rails, along with much of the BBC. It's descended into ever-increasing over-complication and the rewriting of characters, all the worst of modern screenwriting where every character is resurrected and modified to fit the latest so-called plot and the latest diversity agenda demands.
