I was never a fan of Harry Potter. I don't find the books well written, and I think they're derivative. Their appeal is in the world building and the epic 'hero's journey' cliche. The books resonate with kids who consider themselves outsiders (or 'queer' in today's parlance) and choose to interpret their status as a signal that they're somehow marked for greatness.
