This is an interesting read. This from a post in /r/China_Flu - I didn't write any of the following (ed: bolded dates):

https://www.reddit.com/r/China_Flu/comments/esuu30/the_complete_coronavirus_timeline_a_man_made/ - archive.is

Reposting here:

Hi. This is going to be a long read, but I promise you it'll be a good read.

I posted this about an hour ago, but I didn't have a complete timeline sorted out to backup my claims - now I do. I still can't claim that the information I listed here are 100% correct as some of them are directly from Weibo - Chinese twitter, but other infos are from credible media sources and they're well written. My English, however, is less well written because I am a Chinese local. My apologies.

At the end of the day, I advise your to view this with a grain of salt - most of these weibos and screenshots are already deleted/censored from the Chinese internet, and if anything, that speaks volume to how much weight they hold.

When you cut out a man's tongue, you're not calling him a liar, you're showing the world you're afraid of what he might say.

You can check this article here if you understand Chinese - they do a better job at listing the timeline than I do.

Dec 8, 2019 is universally regarded as the first case of the coronavirus appearing. Him and about 27 other patients went to the hospital - they all have the same symptoms, and they're identified as 'unknown pneumonia patients'.

Things escalated in the next couple of weeks. On Dec 30, 2019, the seafood market that these cases originated from was identified, but no actions to directly close down and quarantine the market was taken. The SARS like virus was also confirmed and an emergency announcement file is released to medical personels with the last line stating: nobody is allowed to spread any information about this without approval from the authorithy. WuhanSARS was also trending that night on Weibo but was immediately censored.

On Dec 31, 2019, a visit to the seafood market shows that nobody was aware of this flu. The entire market was business as usual. People walking around with no virus protection of any kind. On the afternoon, health committe released info on 27 cases of unknown pneumonia patients to the public, stating that no person-to-person virus transition have been discovered yet, and no medical staff was infected. Central people's newpaper tweeted something alone the lines of:

'All of the cases are residents of the seafood market, guys, there is nothing to be worried about. Rest assured! Even if it's SARS, we are sure to have it under control with our advanced and unmatched medical system.'

On Jan 1, 2020. People began posting on Weibo that it is very possible this virus can transfer between humans. They were censored. In the mean time, Wuhan police's account tweeted out: '8 individuals that spreaded misinformations about the pneumonia have been taken into custody. Worry not Chinese people! We've got everything under control.' The Wuhan health committe also keep on stating that this virus does not transfer between humans. I'm sure you're seeing a pattern here.

What's interesting to note that the Hong Kong goverment called a stat emergency immediately upon discovering cases within its region on Jan 4, whilst people in Wuhan are still trusting in its leaders and hoping for the best. This went on for an entire week, the Wuhan health committe keeps on stating that no new cases were discovered when in the mean time censored tweets on Weibo states hospitals are completely full with patients and new cases around the world starts to surface.

It is extremely clear at this point that this virus is highly contagious, can transfer between humans and can be deadly. But Wuhan citizens, going with the false info released by its goverment, was still going around the city with no protection whatsoever, believing that this is just a benigh virus under control.

On Jan 14, a group of journalists and medical staffs from Hong Kong came to Wuhan's hospital, they were rejected, later taken to the police and all footages they took in the hospital was taken away.

Keep in mind that in the mean time new cases started to spring everywhere on the map of China, and Wuhan citizens that traveled to other corners of the world are identified as infected cases.

On Jan 12, Imperial college london released a report estimating there should be around 1,700 cases by Jan 17. This invoked some questions in China.

On the same day, Jan 13th HuBei people's representitive meeting was held in Wuhan. This is a huge goverment election event that lasts about a week. Before you ask, wait, China has elections? Just google it, I won't go too deep into it.

On Jan 16, someone on ZhiHu (The Chinese Quora) asked 'ok, so there are so many cases happening around the world, how did our great leaders manage to get this under control?' (Spoiler: They didn't, they just didn't put in on the news). More questions were asked and soon they were all deleted.

During the time the meeting was held, no new cases were reported by the Wuhan health committe. On Jan 18 however, after the event has finished, they started stating new cases were 'discovered' again. An interesting coincedence. This corona fellow is very collabrative.

Keep in mind that this late into 2020, people still have no idea how serious this virus is, they still think it doesn't transfer between humans, they still think it's only a handful of people that got this thing and it's completely under control.

On Jan 17, Wuhan travel committe released their big event: Free sightseeing for up to 200,000 tourists! Come to Wuhan and see the beautiful city!

On Jan 18, 40,000 families gathered around to eat and share family made gourmet dishes with each other. The smell of happiness filled the air. No virus involved.

On Jan 20, Mr. Zhongnanshan, at 84 years old, went to Wuhan with a medical team. This is the first time some truth was released to the public: this virus transitions between humans, 15 medical staff was infected, and it is at this point the case and death numbers started skyrocketing.

I'll leave a imgur album of some chatlogs/weibo here, they're all translated. You can see for yourself how serious this thing really is.

Why are most subs so utterly dead (devoid of comments) and how to fix it? by justvisiting in AskSaidIt

[–]yetanotherone_sigh 7 insightful - 4 fun7 insightful - 3 fun8 insightful - 4 fun -  (0 children)

There simply aren't that many people regularly visiting the site and interacting with it. There were a couple of waves of new signups that happened corresponding with subreddits being canceled on reddit. But those people need to have a group of people to interact with, to comment on each others posts and other comments. Since that startup threshold wasn't met, they all left (mostly) after being here for a brief time.

The people who are actually here are outcasts of other social media (here and on poal and gab and parler) that have been kicked out or left reddit and twitter due to censorship and cancellation.

This tends to create a feedback loop, as some saw on voat. Only the outcasts were at voat, which means a very small group on a free speech site, and the really vocal, really unpleasant people tended to have extremist positions. As they grew more powerful, they were emboldened and they grew louder. This drove off more "moderate" or "reasonable" free-speech loving folk. Over time, this effect was amplified x 100, until only the true Nazis and scum of the earth were on voat. This has already taken over poal, and is beginning to happen here.

So the most populous sub on this site has about 39,000 subscribers, but almost all of them are gone. Hard to get any good metrics on the engagement each participant has on this site, but I'd bet that there are less than 1,000 people regularly reading and probably less than 500 active participants and commenters. Poal is even smaller. Since the Q people took over, the most populous sub has only 800 subscribers and probably less than 100 active participants.

You have to hit a critical mass early on in order to have a snowball effect of people joining and more people joining because there are people already there. If you don't hit it within a certain amount of time, you're not going to. And I think saidit and poal are both going downhill due to the extremists taking over the political discussion on the site. If you don't pass their purity test, they actively go against you with more than just downvotes. I had my life threatened on multiple occasions on voat, due to having an opinion that did not line up with the purity test. That scares most people off, and the site dies a slow death.

Not a lawyer, but I play one on TV.

I believe when you are in international waters, you are subject to the laws of the flag you are sailing under. That's why so many US companies have cruise ships licensed in the Bahamas, Bermuda, Liberia, Nassau, and other places. (Their taxes are lower and their regulations are more lax.)

So you have your own ship that is sailing under, say, the flag of Bermuda. Pretty much everywhere you go in the world, you are allowed to defend yourself against deadly force. So that's point #1. (To be fair, they probably should have waited until the pirates used deadly force before shooting.)

In the absence of anything else, they should be calling mayday for help. The US Navy and the US Coast Guard operate worldwide, their fleets are bigger than any other navy in the world, and they often intercede in places like this. But, they can't be everywhere at once.

I'm aware that some cruise ships and other commercial vessels have sound cannons, water cannons, and other nonlethal defenses they can use to ward off attackers. I'm also presuming they have better weapons locked away that no one talks about unless they need them as a last resort.

From our perspective, the best thing these good guys can do is kill everyone and leave no witnesses. Best outcome is sinking the other boat entirely. Then nobody knows what you did and you don't have to answer any pesky questions about your self defense actions. Probably a good idea to keep the video off the web, too. (Ooops...)

I literally don't care if an antivaxxer doesn't take the shot. What I do care is that both of our hospitals and ICUs in my county are 100% full. This is preventing me from having access to emergency medicine. The people in ICU are 99% unvaccinated covid cases. Regular medical vists are very hard to schedule, and elective surgeries are nonexistent. And just try getting an appointment with someone like a pulmonologist or a cardiologist.

This dude knows what he's talking about. I used to go to pieces when I was alone for a week or so. Meditation helps. Finding internal peace helps. You need to find out that you are okay with being you. Find your own meaning and place in this universe without that being external to you (not within another person).

And do the physical things. Take a shower and brush your teeth. Go for a walk in the woods. Go outside at night and look at the stars away from city lights. Go for a drive to nowhere, a place you've never been before. Take a long hike. Work with your hands in the garage. Plant something in the ground. Do a hobby. Volunteer.

People are stressed out right now and need to have a release. Everyone is going through this. The sooner you find your own internal peace, the better off you will be.

[–]yetanotherone_sigh 4 insightful - 3 fun4 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

To answer your question seriously: Not very many.

The most populous sub had 39,717 subscribers.

Many of those are bots. How many? Unknown.

I believe, without evidence, that many of those actual humans were one-time signups that are now gone. Reddit subreddit bans come in waves. Each time a big wave happens, it results in a wave of signups here out of a response of frustration and anger. Those people appear to sign up, look around a little, and then slowly trickle away when they realize that the site just really isn't that large.

You'd have to judge actual numbers on site engagement. Using the 90/9/1 rule of thumb, 90% of users are lurkers. 9% create an account and upvote and downvote and comment. 1% are content creators and submit new posts. So if you go by the front page, you have some posts that do not have any comments, just a few upvotes, and some posts make it to the front page without any upvotes at all.

So not very many active users. Using this post as an example, you have 16 comments and 16 upvotes. Using the 90/9/1 rule, around 160 people saw this post and 16 interacted with it. And this was one of the more active posts on the front page.

[–]yetanotherone_sigh 3 insightful - 3 fun3 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

OK let's take a look at what happened and why.

The upper echelon was caught with its pants down and did not have adequate emergency supplies on hand for a pandemic.

They were extremely concerned about people going out and buying every mask available, hoarding them, and then medical personnel and other essential front line workers would not have enough.

So they deliberately told people a little white lie, a misstatement: "Masks don't help, don't go buy them."

Dr. Fauci later rescinded this statement and explained why they did it, and apologized. He also stated the exact opposite: "Masks work to protect others, and we should all be wearing them."

BTW, what they predicted came to pass exactly: everyone went out and bought up all the supplies, and the hospitals ran short.

So either you are not keeping up with current events, or you are deliberately presenting misinformation as fact.

Now, let's look at what your quote from Dr. Fauci says about the effectiveness of masks. No mask is 100% effective. It's not supposed to be. The R0 rate of infection spread needs to be reduced to below 1. That's all. Then the disease will die out. No one has ever said that masks are 100% effective. They just need to knock it down. Epedemiologists have known this for over 100 years. We have literally over a century of empirical evidence that masks work.

You can be spreading the virus before you are showing symptoms.

The mask is to keep YOU from making OTHERS sick, not to protect YOU.

THEIR mask is to protect YOU.

They migrated to voat and took it over. Now voat is just an utter cesspool.

This platform was pretty good and had useful and thoughtful discussion, the way reddit did 10 years ago.

A Yellowstone supervolcano eruption would be very bad. But magma takes a long time to percolate to the surface and it hasn't been doing that. So it won't happen instantly. News and media hype and movies aside, it takes a while. Mt. St. Helens in 1980 took about 2 months to go from no activity to a big eruption... they had lots of warning. And Mt. St. Helens had been dormant only since the time of the Lewis and Clark expedition. So it wasn't really dormant at all... just on a pause. Yellowstone is many orders of magnitude bigger than that, and will take a lot more time to become active.

Also, these quakes are like 600 miles away from there and are on the rim of the Pacific subduction zone (on the edge of the North American plate). So they are very unrelated events.

It's pretty simple and I'm surprised that more stores in these areas don't do this:

You put a big bulletproof plexiglass door in the front with a turntable or drawer in it, like they have in pot shops and banks and everything.

Customer comes up to the window. They are not allowed in the store. They talk into a speaker or use a kiosk to tell the employee what they want. The employee goes and gets the crap from the store and rings it up. Customer pays for it by putting cash in the drawer or running a card through an armored card reader. If it is paid properly, the order is dropped into the slot and the customer can retrieve it.

This isn't rocket science. If shoplifters take over, make it impossible to do. If shoplifters cannot get to the products, they cannot shoplift. 2" thick plexiglass is bulletproof and cannot be pried open. A linebacker can't take it down. You would need to install some 36" tall steel columns in front of the store to prevent someone from driving a car through the door. This is pretty standard stuff.

I live in a state where pot is legal to sell in licensed shops. They are all run this way. They have a small display area out front. You tell the salesperson what you want and pay for it. They take your money into the back and return with your product. Customers are never anywhere near the product or the cash register. Nobody ever tries to rob or shoplift at a place like this. They'd just lock the "airlock" on the bulletproof lobby doors and you'd get a ride to jail.

Couple of points in the US. Hospital staff, particularly nurses:

Have quit because of terminal burnout / overwork

Have quit because of mask mandates

Have died because of Covid

Have had permanent injuries due to Covid, or are suffering from Long Covid symptoms and cannot work

Have left hospital nursing and went to work for a private practice or other less-stressful job.

All of this has led to the current shortage of nurses in the US. Now with fewer nurses to actually do the work, two things are happening:

  1. Hospitals cannot fill up to the capacity of the number of beds they have. They can only fill to a certain ratio of nurses to patients. There may be unused beds in a hospital, but they cannot have a patient in them because there is no one to take care of them.

  2. The remaining nurses are being worked harder and harder, leading to more burnout and more nurses leaving. This is a snowball effect that can only get worse as time goes on. The head of Alabama's medical system had a press conference last week and was in tears, saying "We don't know how much longer we can do this."

I've seen two postings for my area for nursing staff. They paid anywhere from $135 to $150 per hour, guaranteed at least 48 hours a week of work. No interview needed. You walk in, show them your credentials, get your paperwork filled out, and you get on the schedule. You are hired. They cannot fill all the available positions at $150 an hour.

Repeat: They cannot fill all the available positions at $150 an hour.

This would be relatively easy to bypass, except that the BT authorization might be located on a board along with the battery management and other "smart" (integrated) technologies. If the BT device was separate and inline, you just clip a couple of wires and put in a wire nut to hotwire it.

Much simpler just to lock the tools up in the store. If you want one, they take it to the register and you buy it.

This isn't rocket science and it does not require bluetooth. This whole premise is silly.

Eventually I got my own Atari 400 and a tape drive and some game cartridges. Kids today have NO IDEA what it was like.

I'm at a similar level of burnout. I make ridiculous amounts of money, I have gray hairs growing out my ears, and I hate everything.

I have an exit strategy. I bought a piece of land with 8 acres of woods and a creek. It's almost paid off now. Building an off grid cabin with solar panels. Who is making up what numbers? The infection rates? They've been published in a dozen studies. Look up something called R0 (Pronounced R-naught). It is the rate which one infected person infects others, which is how fast the disease multiplies. I've been looking at this for months and the R0 value for coronavirus is likely somewhere between 3 and 6, meaning every 1 person infects 3-6 other people. I've seen numbers in published papers saying 4.7 to 6.8. There is a lot of uncertainty, but we see that the case number in the US is doubling roughly every 3 days.

It's not so much the total number dead... it's how catchy this bug is. One person can infect between 3 and 6 other people. That's WAY higher than the flu. And the death rate is also way higher. So it is expected to be around 30X as bad as the flu (in terms of total numbers dead) at a best-case scenario.

The growth rate is truly terrifying. Humans are bad at understanding parabolic growth. Check this site out: https://covid19info.live/us/ Hit the drop down menu where it says "Global" and change to -> Americas -> US. It's not how many people have it. It's how fast it is growing. It will overwhelm the US medical system in a matter of weeks. There are not enough ICUs or respirators in the USA (we need 30 times more than we have).

There seems to be a lot of confusion right now. A lot of doctors are saying it is way worse than the Chinese government is saying. Something like 9% lethality according to rumor. It is extremely easy to transmit from person to person. One of the doctors was quoted as saying that one person will infect, on average, 14 other people. (The Spanish flu had an infection rate of 2-3 people.) They've got a couple of big cities on lockdown right now, but the fear is that it has already spread beyond the quarantine zone. Several verified cases in the US already.

So this looks like it will spread really fast and be pretty deadly. Be careful if you have to go. Wear a mask and wash your hands. Don't touch your eyes or your nose.
