I’m honestly not sure if a predator drone is cheaper than a police chopper.

It's not even close. Drones, at least the small unarmed ones just meant for surveillance, are massively less expensive than a helicopter both to buy and operate. Plus, you presumably don't need the same amount of training as a helicopter pilot to fly them.

https://www.dw.com/en/a-guide-to-military-drones/a-39441185

LUNA mid-sized drone, $310,000.

"A police helicopter costs from $500,000 to $3 million to acquire, and $200-$400 an hour to fly."

However, what few black families moved in were all middle or upper middle class who had moved out of the shithole urban city centers because they could afford to. Yeah, I thought the people calling it a hoax were nuts. Then I saw thousands of Democrats marching in the streets, many not wearing masks, none social distancing, while their leaders cheered...right after calling the handful conservatives protesting the covid restictions "domestic terrorists".

The threat was definitely exaggerated. Whether it's intentional or not I'm unsure. I suspect the idiots in state government saw a high ~20-30% fatality rate from hospital admissions of covid, didn't realize that that suffered from a selection bias, misapplied it to the entire population and freaked out. But it's been months and better data is available. By now they have to know Covid isn't a serious concern. I'm seeing estimates making it little worse than the regular flu.

Everyone's now freaking out about the "rising covid case count", while they ignore the flat death rate. Yes, cases are rising in part because we're testing more and in part because idiot Democrats are ignoring the orders of their own Democrat leaders, but fatalities aren't rising in proportion. That's because it's nowhere near as deadly as originally reported.

Such concerns were highlighted when a Predator drone was spotted over Minneapolis during protests that turned violent in May.

You know what? I'm completely fine with the government at the very least monitoring when hundreds of people are looting, rioting, burning, and in some cases murdering their neighbors. Apparently police aren't able to do so much as use tear gas or arrest rioters, much less shoot anyone committing violent felonies now. Sounds like a non-story.

  1. It only effects their Android app, not their regular website
  2. It's not tracking user data, it's just retrieving the site's favicon in a format that can be displayed in the app. Otherwise they'd have to bloat up the app's code with image processing functionality to retrieve and convert all the various image formats. Much easier to just setup a tiny server somewhere that the app can just query.

If you think sending data to DuckDuckGo is being used to track you...you're already sending them data in the form of search queries that can also be used to track you. You either trust them when they say they're not tracking you or you don't. This news doesn't change anything.

If you're truly so paranoid as to think they're tracking you, you can always hack your phone's DNS to point the domain "icons.duckduckgo.com" to localhost or something so it can't retrieve anything.

Even better, you should be using incognito browser behind a VPN.

Modern technology has clearly gotten even easier to kill people, but it's also made it easier to control people. Just look at all the Americans living in one of the safest most prosperous country in the world (pandemic nonwithstanding) who think they're basically living in 1940s era Germany. They believe that because the people controlling them want them to believe that.

That's a nice way of describing an Apartheid state..

Israel is an Apartheid state? Didn't realize that. We probably need to tell the minority Muslim citizens of Israel who have full voting rights (unlike virtually every other country in the middle east) that they're being oppressed...

34 men from USS Liberty and hundreds wounded would beg to differ...

I knew some troll would mention something like this. "US soldiers died in the middle east somewhere at sometime for some reason, therefore they died defending Israel". No, they didn't. Yes, that was a tragic accident, and the direct fault of Israel, but that's it, and could have well happened if we were giving Israel zero support. Those kinds of accidents happen during war all the time, even when we're not the direct participants.

A similar accident occurred during the Iraq-Iran war, when an Iraqi war plane fired missiles at a US navy ship, mistaking it for an Iranian vessel at long range, killing dozens of US sailors.

The "fog of war" is a real thing.

And btw , US troops dying in Syria, Iraq, Lybia and soon Iran will all be remembered as soldiers protecting Semite interests in ME

None of those things are solely "Semite interests". With Libya especially, thanks to Obama, the neighborhood is now more dangerous for Israel and everyone else nearby, as it's now even more overrun with Muslim terrorists. And no country in the middle east, aside from Iran, wants to see Iran with nuclear arms. That's a key reason why the Saudis, Jordan and Egypt have all made peace with Israel and the US, out of fear of Iran.

Because:

  1. His claims are really in the weeds. You have to spend a lot of time breaking down everything he says to really understand it. It's more complicated than "government spying, government bad". Scott Adams makes a good point about this. If some issue becomes so complicated that, in order to see the truth, you have to get in the weeds, it's not going to register with the public at large, because they have other things to do and can't spend that much time on it.
  2. People don't actually care as much about their privacy as we typically like to believe.
  3. The government really wants its spying powers, and so politicians aren't really pressed to change anything. Few politicians get elected on a "tear down government spying" platform or lose an election by not being pro-privacy enough. However, politicians are desperately afraid of losing an election because some terrorist murders thousands of people because the government didn't have enough intel and was blindsided.

Just look at all the "shortcuts" the intel community took to wiretrap the Trump campaign during the 2016 election, believing that anyone who was even remotely pro-Russia and in Trump's orbit must be a secret KGB agent trying to infiltrate the US. The FBI was able to obtain secret FISA warrants for Carter Page, Michael Flynn and others using evidence that was later found to be just rumors and outright political smears by Hillary supporters or Trump political opponents like Christopher Steele.

While this claim is associated in the media with litigants in the Washington Redskins trademark dispute; Amanda Blackhorse[34] and Suzan Shown Harjo,[35] the NCAI's support indicates that the belief is widespread.

I'm just not buying that. I've never heard anyone even remotely ever refer to that etymology. I even remember the old Disney Peter Pan cartoon has a whole song about "What makes the red man red". Sure, offensive and stereotyped by modern standards, it implied their skin was red, not bloody. If "redskin" was a reference to literally torn off pieces of bloody flesh, that's an etymology that left the public consciousness a long time ago.

This is terribly misleading.

What we spend on Israel is about in line with what we spend in areas with a lot of potential conflict where we have self-interest. For example, during the Cold War, we spend 10 times that on Europe protecting them from the threat of a potential Soviet invasion that never happened.

"According to the International Institute for Strategic Studies, the United States spends roughly $36 billion annually on military capabilities in Europe, almost 10 times its annual assistance package to Israel.

Also, the Israelis have been pretty good about handling local conflicts mostly on their own (albeit with our support), without getting US troops killed fighting for them. "No American blood was expended to save Israel when a coalition of Arab armies attacked it in 1948. Indeed, not a single American soldier has ever died defending Israel, something that cannot be said about many of our allies"

Contrast that with the US's commitment to NATO Europe or Taiwan, where, if Russia or China respectfully were to attack, US troops would have to die defending them. We have no similar commitment to Israel, whose soldiers and civilians are routinely attacked and killed.

Also, of that $4 billion (more like $3.8 but whatever), most of that if is given on condition that it be spent buying products and military hardware from the US. So ok, maybe that's some pork to the defense lobby, but it's not like all that money's going to some hole in the ground. It's coming right back to the US where it's supporting a shit ton of jobs.

"Unlike U.S. aid to Israel, most of which is funneled back to the American defense sector, U.S. defense spending toward its forward-operating presence in Europe and Asia is composed of hundreds of thousands of “boots on the ground,” soldiers whose lives would be at stake in any scenario involving an attack on treaty allies. And these allies lie under our nuclear umbrella, meaning that conflicts on either continent could theoretically ensnare the United States in nuclear war."

Israel's population is also about 2% that of the US, making it far smaller than most US states. What works for a small culturally homogeneous monolithic country like Israel won't necessarily work for a massive federalist country like the US.

However, if states want to institute "universal healthcare & government-subsidized colleges & universities", they can. Nothing's legally stopping them. In fact, most do, at least with schools. Virtually every state has government subsidized universities. I should know. I went to one. I paid $30k for a four year degree. A bargain then, and even moreso by modern standards. Some states have tried doing the same with hospitals, with less success. Contrary to the claims of universal healthcare advocates, the current system is liked by the vast majority of people.

She certainly has a right to defend herself. However, the one thing she did wrong was not calling the police first.

Tim Pool made a good point. The person who calls the police first usually wins, because that's who the police listen to.

Had she done that, police would have arrived to help her, seen the black women harassing her, broken it up, and she'd be in the clear. Instead, they call the police for "crazy white woman waving a gun around" and now she's the one they go after, if even the claim is untrue.

Everyone has the right to defend themselves, lethally if need be. But unless you're literally in fear of death or severe bodily harm, first take out your phone, record them, call 911, and then let the police do their job.

you know the party that's been consistently anti-war and anti-interventionist.

And also anti-winning elections.

For what it's worth, Trump's been pretty anti-war. He's not Gandhi by any means, but both establishment Republicans and Democrats have been furious that he hasn't become more of an interventionist, Democrats with Syria and Russia and Republicans with Iran and China.

[–]BravoVictor 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Title's a little hyperbolic, but the article makes a fair point. Democrats make cities unlivable, causing everyone with means to flee, depriving cities of tax revenue. So what can they do? Just transform and engulf the burbs back into the cities. Rinse and repeat.

The best part:

"Obama passed regulations in 2013 to force suburban neighborhoods with no record of housing discrimination to build more public housing targeted to ethnic and racial minorities."

I wonder how much "affordable housing" is in the Martha's Vineyard community where Obama bought a $10 million mansion...

The GNU Project is Bleeding Into Microsoft by dissent in Linux

[–]BravoVictor 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Saw this on ycombinator. Couldn't disagree with it more. I dislike Microsoft as much as the next guy, but arguing GNU shouldn't use Github because it's owned by Microsoft is hysterical nonsense.

If the site does it's job well, then what's the problem? Is Microsoft going to steal GNU's public and free code?

GNU developers want to spend their limited time and resources writing software. Not hosting websites, which is both more tedious, expensive and time consuming than most people realize. When you visit some project's website, and it's not hosted by a company like Github, most people don't realize that's usually being paid for out of the developer's pocket. Not everyone is wants to spend their money like that, especially when a company like Github can utilize economies of scale to do it virtually for free.

I have projects hosted on Github and elsewhere. I had reservations about Microsoft's acquisition of them, but so far I haven't seen any meaingful changes in the site's features or policies.

I occassionally like Dore's commentary, but he can be such an ill-informed clickbait troll sometimes. He has a huge blind spot when it comes to traditional leftist stalking horses.

Oh no, dumping radioactive waste into the ocean! Nuclear equals bad, so that must be terrible! Or is it?

"Yesterday, an expert panel released a draft report recommending that the Japanese government allow Tokyo Electric Power Company to release radioactive water from its crippled Fukushima nuclear power plants into the ocean. Either that or evaporate it into the atmosphere. Both are fine, especially since a gallon of this water is as radioactive as a bag of potato chips."

The tritium being dumped occurs nationally in the ocean, and that's usually where it's originally harvested from.
