I'm not sure about that. The SA population is too small, or maybe nonexistent, to make a difference in the swing states that will determine the vote. However flawed she is as the representative for the black voters, she was chosen as a symbolic nod to pander to the black vote. Also, they might be thinking she'll do a good job in the traditional VP role of an attack dog. And here I must say, when the VP candidate is a woman, the VP as attack dog strategy doesn't work and more than likely will backfire. But despite that strategy keeps failing, for some reason the campaign experts can't see that.

That's the way I look at it. Supporting this site doesn't mean supporting the individual views within it. I support the Constitution but it doesn't mean I support all the ways people act and behave under it.

A lot of things said on here are repulsive but is the alternative better? At the rate things are going, alternative frightens and repulses me way more and I guess that's the reason why I'm still here.

I won't support policing of speech on this site or any other site actually trying to maintain the principle of free speech. But I don't think this site will last. Fundamentally people everywhere care more about their pet issues than upholding free speech (and that includes those flooding the front page as well as those disgusted by it, and all the sheeples happily posting in non-political subreddits because "it doesn't affect them".

I don't remotely think I have any answer, let alone the true answer. I for one don't know what the answer is. I find the rampant speech policing in our society horrible, and the emergence of Cancel Culture is horrifying. So here are people who experienced the consequences of that or people purporting to care about free speech, but it all turn out to be a sham.

I don't see people buying Saidit mugs and shirts when they won't donate a few bucks. And like you said, with the jewdemic going on here few are going to want to own anything with a logo associated with this site. I can see your point about pyramid of debate but I don't agree at all with nsfw content. Not because I have issues with nsfw, but because a site having specific purposes as to subject is not in and of itself censorship. If a magazine is a food & dining magazine, it's not censorship if it doesn't contain articles bout cars and automobiles. This site's rule is no porn. In and of itself it is not censorship if that type of content is not covered by the mission of the site.

You're right there's no guarantee. However, I also think maybe Magnora7 running the site solo may be why he can't enforce it. He's one person, he can only do so much in 24 hrs a day. Maybe every mod of a sub should take it upon themselves to enforce the pyramid of debate, and all those who don't follow it would have their low value comments removed? There probably should be a serious discussion about this.

So, if everyone refuses to donate because the "other" side would flood the site anyway, then this site is doomed to fail. If the 2000+ users on here would all contribute just a little each, maybe Magnora7 will be able to pay a few people to enforce the pyramid of debate??

Or everyone can just sit here and bitch, and when Magnora7 runs out of funds, or can't see why he should be the only one making the effort, this site will close down and we'll still be left with nothing but Reddit.

No I will not fuck off because this is seriously a problem, and it exposes the hypocrisy of the thousands of users here. Saidit does not have a "channel". It's not a podcast, so I don't know how he's supposed to run ads. Moreover, did you even read about this site when you started posting here? This site was started to not let corporate interest impact free speech! Once a platform depends on corporate funding, then corporations can make the users toe the line or threaten to withdraw ads and support. This site starts to run ads, and it'll be just like Reddit and every other place that has to bend at the knee to Cancel Culture. Maybe I didn't understand what you were saying, but you aren't even understanding what this site is fundamentally trying to do.

ETA: BTW, I apologize that I misunderstood your comment. It just annoyed the fuck out of me to see people here bitch every day, and then see almost all of them not even lifting a pinky to stand behind what they say.

What censoring? There's not censoring except in specific-purpose subs that are limited from being shown on the front page. And stop passing the buck like this is all woke folks' fault. There are more alt_right here than woke. Neither camp, or anything in between, is doing squat to support this site, as there are thousands of members in subs but 27---27!--patron donors. Everyone's talking a good talk but they're all just letting Magnora7 fight the fight alone in the swamp. Totally disappointing.

Her having experienced sexism is no excuse for all her nonsense. Her not being able to leave her house on her 18th birthday is the kind of things that has happened to all child stars and celebrity regardless of male or female so that's not sexism. Same with Pedophiles photoshopping.

She's a full-grown adult now. If she has suffered sexism, but still she's going to keep up her blind contribution to more discrimination and sufferings of women less fortunate than her, then I can make fun of her for her moronic handmaidenry and wokeness. God forbid she gets made fun of. OMG did we hurt her feelings? Let us not forget to coddle millionaire handmaidens in case their fragile feelings get hurt.

But more likely she wouldn't give a shit what people are saying here. And she doesn't have to either because she's privileged enough to never have to care.

Saidit is not a start up. It's not a business and that's the whole point of this site. I'm sure Magnora7 can do a whole lot better money wise if this was a start up and he can get ads revenue, investors, or what have you. But then if that happens, you people would no longer have your free speech, and then you'll all bitch about companies being woke and not letting you speak. It's another manifestation of cancel culture. Put enough one-star reviews on a book, movie, or show, and other people will believe the product is so bad, they won't buy it anymore. That's the purpose.

ETA: Never mind, my mistake. You said Goodreads, not Amazon. Goodreads can be pretty awful. A few years ago there were some people there who made it a sport to target authors for bullying. They'd one-star authors and leave bad reviews they want to pick on just to get a reaction from the author. If the author can't help by respond, the mob would jump in and pile on. There was a Guardian article about it. Bizarre and eye-opening. I think that's stopped though.

That's Zuby. For someone as highly educated as he is, he is really tone deaf to women's issues and has a lot of sexist views. Annoying as hell. I'd give him credit for not being afraid to speak out against Woke issues, and he does try to think critically about his beliefs, even though his critical thinking still doesn't lead to enlightenment when it comes to the subject of women. And he does have a good point that his rap content are very wholesome comparing to the edgy stuff out there, yet somehow he's the bad guy in that.

His weightlifting stunt here isn't to defend women, but to show that women are always inferior.

What you said still doesn't answer the question of who sets the rules? Who sets the boundaries? How far the boundaries are acceptable?

You said there can be no free speech for everyone without some form of censorship, which you describe as rules and boundaries, or else the bullies and trolls take over. From what I'm seeing though, the bullies and trolls have succeeded actually in places like Reddit, Twitter, etc that did exactly what you said. Here on saidit, there are some seriously crazy antisemitic and racist posts, but TBH I don't find them bullying. I find them disgusting and abhorrent for sure, but none of these loons did anything to shut down anyone who disagree. Crazy enough they actually want to debate people. If you check out what they posted here, you'll find they want to engage you in a conversation. If anyone has too much time and want to talk to them for kicks, they can. It'd probably be better time spent going to the insane asylum and talk to someone there. Bottom line is, none of them (At least the crazy ones on this site) have even remotely tried to shame people who disagree with them, call them evil, tried to destroy the livelihood of people they disagree with, or ostracize them openly. None of them had brigaded us or anyone else. They're many horrible things for the views they hold, but they in fact are not bullies as far as on this site is concerned. If other people won't join the site, it's not because these loons are bullying them out. It's simply because they can't stomach seeing such horrible speech.

As for trolls, you can deal with them like trolls on any site. Ignore them. If everyone ignore them, they'll stop. (unless it's a coordinated False Flag cultural attack).

So as regard to this site, what you're really saying is that the users with horrible views should be somewhat censored so that more other people with more correct views can come and speak. What that sounds like is that the bullying is actually to be done on people with wrong views, not the other way around. Let's stop the loons from talking so better people can come and take up more space.

Look, I have the same concerns as you. I don't know the solution either. But there are fallacies in the options you suggested. Now that I've been on this site for a few weeks, what I realized is that there are just loons with no power sprouting nonsense. They dominate the front page because no one is starting and engaging in conversations on other topics. And there are options for rules and boundaries because we have utilized those to exclude them specifically. Those rules are what keep us off the front page. Otherwise, just check the upvote numbers and long strings of arguments. I guarantee you our posts here would be flooding the front page and this site would look like a GC site.

Also, Amazon has perfected their system to stop one-star review attacks after Hillary Clinton's book came out a few years ago. I think personal boycotts based on ideals are fine but the whole group outrage of 'if you don't boycott X company you're evil and needed to be cancelled' thing is ridiculous.

Cancel culture is millions of individuals who do not know how to cope with people they dislike, all making individual choices to harass, boycott, doxx, petition, and write letters.

I think you're both correct. On the one hand personal boycotts as a personal choice is not actually cancel culture. OTOH, these personal choices become a collective now because of fucking Twitter. Twitter continuously create outrages to rally a mob for this or that. So while the choices are personal, normally in the past these choices wouldn't have been made in the first place. Once the mob gets loud enough, all the corporations fold and bend at the knee.

Of course in a free society people should be able to boycott companies by their personal choices. In a sane world, boycotts are for when a company is dumping toxic chemicals into the river. In a world where Twitter is the arbiter of morality, companies get threats of boycott when a lowly hourly employee at one store out of the company's 500 stores nationwide does or say something that a shrill group of people on Twitter decides is offensive. Or worse, what the one lowly employee did or said is taken totally out of context or misconstrued. It's ridiculous. It's also ridiculous when the mob threatens boycott if the head of a company voices support for the "wrong" party or politician. Why should hundreds of workers and employees who are just working to feed their families suddenly have their livelihoods threatened because I disagree with their CEO's politics? 99% of the time when people take jobs, they have no clue about the top management's politics. Most will never even meet the executive management. Should people only take jobs now if the entire company's management have "correct" views and opinions? What about people who live in places where the company is the largest jobs provider in the area? The whole thing is insane and out of hand.

The site admin plus some old users had been telling everyone ad nauseum that the best way to stop this is to post more other interesting stuff, like dog pictures and hobbies and the likes, so to make this place a platform of diverse interests and the cultural attack posts and racists posts would be drowned out. Somehow it's been futile.

For us the best thing would be that when we see lunatic extremist posts, do not engage. Just move on. If they're cultural attack posts, then we're adding to the problem and potentially helping to deplatform ourselves. If they're real extremists, then it's a waste of our time to talk to them anyway.

No offense taken. However, I don't think that withholding donation is equivalent to me having power to disallow whose idea is ok or deny anyone power. Certainly donations from any source would help. But whether I'm a donor or not, I personally have no power one way or another to allow or disallow anyone on this platform. Moreover, no one is even required to ever make donation of any kind, even for causes or organizations they value. The fact that there are only 21 patrons to this site reflects that. Thousands of people are here right now, rent free. I don't think I should be singled out to be someone who must overcome something I'm not comfortable with to give financial support. How I or anyone decide to give donations should be entirely up to the person doing the giving. If it was a tax, a law, or an issue of business boycott, that'd be another matter IMO.

ETA: Notwithstanding what I said here, I'm glad to see your call for everyone to help contribute. Magnora7 appears to be a very reasonable person giving a lot to try to do something good. I think he can really use as much support a he can get.

I just want to add a message of support. It saddens me to hear that detrans is ruining your life. Please remember that your life doesn't need to (and shouldn't have to) evolved around whether you're trans or detrans. In fact, the whole gender identity is stupid. You're a whole person. Why define yourself by gender anyway? Gender is not even remotely interesting. Try to move beyond that and explore your other interests or develop skills at something you're good at. Join those communities and meet new people, online or IRL, who share those interests. Leave behind friends who can't accept you and make new ones. Family--that one is hard, and I don't even understand. Do they want you to be someone reliant on hormones for life? As for the person you love, that one is tough too, but it happens sometimes. Even people who are married get divorced. But know that when one path ends, you'd be on a new path. You will be ok. This too shall pass. Your personhood need not be defined by whether you're a man or woman or living the lifestyle set by some ridiculous gender stereotype. You're defined by what you do, what goals you pursue in life for yourself, what you bring to your community, and a whole lot more beyond that.

It must feel so lonely for you right now, and we all feel for you. If we're to be honest, there's no advice we can give you that can truly help change the people around you. That said, just because everyone else is obsessed with ideology, gender identities and issues, doesn't mean you have to be. In fact, one day you'll probably look back and think this is all in fact totally boring. And whatever your sexual preference, you're sixteen. At sixteen, no one needs to be in a hurry to find the love of your life yet. So in the mean time, can you redirect your time and mind to something else completely unrelated to all the nonsense? Can you explore new hobbies and develop skills in something else? I'm just throwing random crazy ideas out there. For example, history? Geocaching? Antiques? Paper mache art? Hell, Wood shop? I'm not saying these are things you should pick up, but just to give you an idea what I mean. Like, seriously, just about anything else will make you a more interesting person than the rest of them. Find something fascinating to you which you can devote time to become really good at or become a hobbyist expert at. It'll make life much more fun and give you a break from all the so-called social issues.

And perhaps find older books about lesbians, whether fiction or nonfiction, so you can explore that world on your own? Others here might know something to recommend to you.

And you can always come back here if you need some air.

Edit ETA: my point about it all being very boring--I mean all the supposed social awareness and endless preoccupation with their gender identities are in fact a total bore.

[–]Lilith_Fair 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

My counter example is not a straw man. The situations are analogous as both are about whether an employee can be fired by an employer for something that directly contradicts the employer's stated principles. What I'm pointing out is that your examples of journalists working for certain publishers, in my view, is not about the employees' speech, but rather, their performing their jobs. You positioned it as an issue of employees' right to speak. I feel there's a distinction from speech, and I see it as an issue of whether the employee is not performing the job by being opposed to what the organization is about.

The Nike example is a hypothetical. But this is what cancel culture is all about. Cancel culture is not limited only to being about whether journalists can speak. It's about whether anybody can speak their minds in the present environment. Perhaps you read the letter to be only about protecting writers, publishers, and journalists, or high profile people's livelihood. I didn't read it that way. I read it as being about cancel culture that is terrorizing the whole society. The Letter didn't address only speech and press, it specifically included criticisms stating: "censoriousness is also spreading more widely in our culture: an intolerance of opposing views, a vogue for public shaming and ostracism, and the tendency to dissolve complex policy issues in a blinding moral certainty."

Note the quoted part "intolerance of opposing views, a vogue for public shaming and ostracism." My Nike example is a hypothetical example to illustrate exactly this.

If you want some real life examples, here's an Atlantic article that reported and discussed at length of some private citizens, non-writers, whose lives had been ruined by cancel culture. https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/06/stop-firing-innocent/613615/

And after the Letter was published, one of the signers, Matt Yglesias, had a transgender co-worker who went right to their employer to complain that "she" now feels "unsafe". Yglesias didn't even sign on to anything that contradicts their employer's mission. It was merely something he did as an expression of an opinion that now is being casted as making someone "unsafe". Could my hypothetical example not happen too if a co-worker of the retail staffer complains about "feeling unsafe" because the retail worker retweeted JK Rowling? Yglesias was the real life example of that, and the people in the Atlantic article. Those are just a few examples. In the last few years, lot of people have been having their livelihoods taken away for expressing "wrong think".

The Letter was signed by high profile people not just to protect their own livelihood. I believe many of them signed it to speak for little people who had become victims of cancel culture but have no platforms or any power at all to seek redress. I'm not the only one who think this either.

You're free to disagree with me. Apparently we read the Letter differently. The current cancel culture is no different than McCarthyism. Further, there's no path to redemption. The punishment and ramifications are too high a price to demand of people and the self-appointed morality police on Twitter should not have the kind of power they currently hold. Therefore I can't support it. If you decided you support it, then I respectfully disagree and I'll be standing by this who want it to stop.

So let me ask you this: will you go to bat for the Catholic Schools currently being sued by gays and lesbians employees who they terminated due to the employees' refusal to adhere to Catholic teachings and beliefs? Because in these cases it goes beyond branding. There's a conflict of civil rights vs. freedom of religion here.

I think the examples you brought up are very specific cases where the employer has a certain set of principles to which they publicly advocate. Therefore, in those cases the employee who act in ways that contradict their principles would essentially be "not doing their jobs". Their terminations would not be an issue of free speech, but an issue of performing a job they were hired to do. In contrast in cases where say, Nike terminates a lowly retail sales person at a store for retweeting JK Rowling, there is nothing that hinders the sales person's ability to perform her job. She should not be fired for speech that has nothing to do with her job. Nike firing her would simply be a matter of choosing to be carpetbegger for one currently trendy segment of consumers. Nothing to do with Nike's brand image in reality, even if one argues that retaining the employee makes Nike look "transphobic". I'd argue that no, it does not. We should never get to a point where companies and employees should be held accountable for a single employee who is not its representative voice. It so, multinational corporations with hundreds of thousands of workers will never be able to operate. That or every one of the hundreds of thousands of workers, even those in foreign countries with cultures and values different from ours, will all have to be put at risk of being fired at the whim of some cultural morality dictators. (And really there are already isolated incidents of this, including some I believe to be hoaxes by those with ideological agenda.)

As for our sub silencing voices--I'm sorry that is not true in spirit and it's a straw man. if we weren't silenced EVERYWHERE and we can openly talk about our GC views on mainstream platforms and ask questions, we probably wouldn't need this sub in the first place. Or we may still have this sub but there'd be no need to keep it for women only. The reason we need this is because we have nowhere else where we're not shut down or shouted down. What's more, the people who started GC had been super accommodating in finding ways to let those they keep out have a way to speak, including starting subs specifically for that. They've gone out of their ways to provide platforms for people to question and debate us. Do the TRAs, MRAs, Libfems, etc done anything like that for us? Have they?

When I put things in perspective and remind myself that the racists on this site are just some individual randos who have no real power over me or anyone else outside of their pathetic little lives anyway, I feel that they can do their puny little rant all the want as long as it remains some rando rant. The benefit of being able to speak and associate freely is such a huge, huge prize in exchange for some nobody rando rant which I can choose to ignore.

I never was a fragile flower who "don't feel safe" because of other people's opinions and I never will be. Sure, it'd be a better, happier, more harmonious world if everyone would be respectful and kind. Btu reality is we won't melt and die, nor do we need to go commit suicide simply because some other moron out there said some bullshit that makes us feel bad.

Straight men won't sleep with me!! When a straight guy says he is not into me, nor other trans women, I feel butthurt–emotionally and, unfortunately, not physically. by joeytundra in GenderCritical

I sincerely hope they start going after straight men. I hope their Twitter Mob will start going batshit crazy to make it a movement to demand straight men to stop their "transphobia" in their dating pool, the way they've been going after lesbians, women, and JK Rowling. Hell, I hope they start demanding Daniel Radcliff publicly admit that he would date and marry a transwoman. I hope they'll enforce silence on straight men who dare to say otherwise, and threaten to cancel them and report them to their employers if they dare to say no. Then, and maybe then, this insanity will finally stop.

Do you think the number of misogynist, antisocial, and just generally unpleasant men is increasing? by TheSeventhSense in GenderCritical

I personally don't have problems with your questions but you're probably better off posting this to s/GenderCriticalGuys. That's what that sub was created for, and women do and allowed to post there so both M&F will answer your questions there if they're interested. The previous sub on Reddit just got banned as you must know now already. Your starting a conversation there would help get things moving there as well.

[Serious] Why can people almost always tell someone's sex? by GCSeedling in GenderCritical

When it comes down to it, animals including human need to instinctively recognize the opposite sex. If not, we wouldn't be able to procreate. The fact that Woke people are acting as if they don't know this, and calling for the whole society to suddenly deny this instinct, is ridiculous. The idea that we even need research on this is as ridiculous as having a need to research whether men are physically stronger than women and therefore should not compete in sports together. They're all so Woke, they're brain damaged.

I also think women are further biologically programmed to instinctively recognize a man for self-protection and preservation. It doesn't mean every man we see is dangerous. But it is a way for us to know how to react to ensure our own safety.
