Sounds like your brother may have a tiny crush on Blaire and therefore needs Blaire to be a "real woman" in his mind.

Unlike a lot of people here I do think Blaire passes pretty well and I do also believe that some people feel a lot more comfortable in a trans identity than any other way. Like you I absolutely worry about childhood medical intervention and parents pushing a trans bandwagon for their own reasons that have little to do with their child's actual welfare.

I feel like so much of this is, in some cases, a reaction to anti-racist and feminist politics. Many people feel like victims though the stats don't support their feelings. So instead of being a reviled white woman, killing black men with her misplaced tears, one can be a genderqueer demiboy and immediately claim marginalisation. As a marginalised person one can again confidently centre oneself in all discussions.

Similarly transcels think that if they're "strong independent lesbian women" rather than cis white men they get permission to neckbeard aggressively all over the place without being chastised

It does get very tangled because we don't have to. But I suspect it's the same reason that TIFs like beards or working out to look hyper masculine. So people judge the exterior as trying to fit into that binary.

I thought it was oddly worded but I don't think Blaire truly believes they could commit a crime and leave no DNA evidence.

This remains really interesting to me. This person believes anyone who pushes against the gender norms of their time is queer. And that does huge injustice to actual gay/lesbian/bisexual/pan/vaguely not straight enough for it to matter people.

Many years ago I was reading some feminist theory and I came across an article where a lesbian was defined as a woman who did not have any emotkonally dependent relationships with men, something like that. Whatever the definition was I thought gosh, as a single woman I too count as a lesbian. I mentioned it to someone on the same course and she very kindly pointed out that it was a no. It was long ago and I can't remember the language she used but I came away feeling like yeah unless you fall in love sexually with women this is not the name to use for yourself and sexuality and oppression for it are not theoretical.

This is probably peak virtue signalling more than anything else.

I follow Dominic Noble's book and movie reviews on YouTube. He's very woke - to the point where he was all "I completely owe my career to JKR because of Harry Potter but now that she is so terfy with her whole don't call me a menstruator thing I can no longer produce HP content ever again" - but his reviews are often sharp and funny and he has a nice soothing voice.

Anyway he has just pulled a presumably humorous review of a presumably m/m book about a sexy lumberjack because... he just found out that the author has come out as NB so his video misgenders and deadnames and makes assumptions about their gender so he has to redo it.

FFS.

I'm guessing this was a typical m/m sexy romance written by a woman who no longer identifies as one, so all his observations about how the characters don't act like men have to be reviewed. That's what I'm guessing.

I hate this obliteration of people's lived experience just so they can be "who they really are" no matter how recently they made their gender decision. If you're born and raised as a girl you're formed by that no matter how NLOG or manly you think of yourself as being.

RCs are 100 percent allowed to pray to any saint they want. That's half the reason we have them.

But I agree, patriarchy isn't merely a Roman thing. The Greeks, for a start...

Like Western cultures, in the golden age of Islam there were certainly some privileged women occupying important roles and compared to the world it came from Islam was pretty liberal on the subject of women's rights. Today it looks very much not of course because it's regressed/continues to act like it's the 14th century.

Just because Celts and Vikings let women own property doesn't mean they weren't patriarchal societies either.

It's interesting because a friend shared a story on FB recently with a headline about EP receiving "transphobic hate" on Twitter. Now I know some women have definitely said things that could be construed as transphobic but the example they gave was literally someone saying "Well I guess I'm glad they're happy but I feel so sad that we've lost another lesbian". How tf is that transphobic?

I don't think EP owes it to lesbiankind to maintain a female identity if this really matters to her. But expressing sadness about her not being a lesbian any more isn't transphobic or hateful. Nobody ever said people are full of homophobic hate if they express disappointment that a star who comes out is now "off the market" for their fantasies.

Tbh having seen lots of.joy outside the terfnet, I think two things are going on here. One, E.Page has for reasons known only to themselves decided that they're a bit of a man and has made a public declaration of that fact. People are naturally rushing to be supportive of a person they assume has been suffering. Maybe they have. And Page deciding to identify as a man is OK. It will largely limit their career to indie and Netflix shows but that's pretty much their niche anyway.

Secondly you get a lot of lesbians who are really disappointed to lose a public figure and role model. And that's also OK. Nobody should HAVE to be a role model but in the LBG world there are so few. People are allowed to be sad about it.

The point about not being able to focus on everything is a good one. However I do think being intersectional is crucial for well rounded understanding of how complex things are, and should not be limited to feminists! Certainly people need to use intersectionality well - it started with race, and imo class comes next, and then sexuality and sexual identity etc. If the first two are not considered then the last two are given too much weight.

It would be nice to see whyte inErSeCtIOnAl trans feminists putting less privileged females who aren't like thrm ahead of themselves, in the way other women are expected to do.

And decoupling birthing from the category mother me very anxious.

Well it's major surgery and prone to complications. I wish that movies and TV with trans characters wouldn't suggest that you simply pop into hospital, recover for a fortnight and voila! As to the manner born. It gives people a very false sense of it being really easy routine surgery.

Can you explain why gender identity does not exist? Don't cisgender people identify as/feel like they are the sex they were assigned at birth? This. I'm a woman because of my body. Sometimes I imagine myself as other things but it doesn't change the physical fact of my.body. I don't feel a need to make my body permanently look like the opposite sex which is i guess why I'm not trans?

I don't understand non-dysphoric trans identities.

[–]Shesstealthy 4 insightful - 3 fun4 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

My understanding is that a delusion is only classified as a delusion if it's in contradiction to what the person's community believes. So if you grew up in a cult that said you were the embodiment of a god, you believing it is not a delusion. So there's that.

Voices are real, to the person that hears them, and they may have concrete material causes in terms of how your brain works. Loads of otherwise hralthy people experience auditory hallucinations. Voices are only a problem if they interfere with your day to day function. For some they are quite helpful.

With an anorexic person the issue is less that they think they're fat and more that they restrict food to a dangerous degree.

So while I agree that trans people's feelings should not be allowed to harm others, and that they like everyone else need protection when their beliefs can cause them to harm themselves, I also believe it's unhelpful to say their beliefs are "not real".

I used to, a bit. I got really upset if mistaken for male, feeling like I must not look like a girl was supposed to look, and wondering what I was doing wrong since I had breasts and so forth.

What I was doing wrong was being tallish and having a lowish voice.

But at that time I was easing into womanhood and wanted boys especially to see me as an attractive girl.

I mean I believe we need to listen to trans voices on their own experiences just as we listen to other minority voices. But I can't shake the sense of being erased. Black women, other minority women and I have something in common. That thing, trans women do not have. And the vast majority were also not socialised as girls which in some ways feels even more significant than biology.

I believe being a woman is a complex nexus between biological realities and socially constructed ideologies. We can't discount either of these things when we examine women's lives and needs.
