"It's a scandal no one tried to stop Keira Bell losing her womanhood"

I hate this phrasing. What is the definition of "womanhood" here? It sounds positively Victorian. To my mind's eye, it conjures up images of corsets, fluttering lace handkerchiefs and fainting couches.

Or is womanhood here supposed to mean an imaginary place - perhaps a pink, glittery, frilly counterpart to Mr Roger's Neighborhood where girly girls spend their days having gabfests, painting each other's nails and engaging in sexy pillow fights?

Or is womanhood an item of clothing that goes over the head? Like Little Red Womanhood wore? Perhaps womanhood here is meant to refer to one of the zip-up sweatshirt jackets from Standing for Women that say "Woman: Adult Human Female" and which some of us refer to as womanhoodies.

The headline is also inaccurate, and it cruelly body-shames Bell. Keira Bell remains a woman with full rights and access to "womanhood" - whatever and wherever that is. She hasn't lost her sex. Her body has been altered in various ways because irresponsible, unethical health care providers she as a young person put her trust in gave her PBs, CSHs and a double mastectomy. But Bell is still 100% a woman, just like all the tens of millions of us who for health reasons have had to have our uteri, Fallopian tubes and/or ovaries or our breasts removed. Or who were born with conditions that caused the reproductive system not to develop or function as is customary.

A better headline would be:

"It's a scandal Keira Bell was given experimental, body-altering drugs and surgery for mental health problems"

For those that don't know Sarah Vine is the more talented wife of Michael Gove and has been writing with GC leanings quite a lot.

I agree. Maybe Keira would have decided on an enby or masc identity without interventions. The scandal is using experimental drugs and surgeries on her with no checks and balances, and before she could reasonably consent in an informed and adult way.
