It's an odd situation. I've always theorized that one of the reasons the population of trans people (specifically m2f) has exploded is out of a desire to distance themselves from white, straight men. Ironically, I just watched a video of a woman who had transitioned to male only to end up feeling actual body dysphoria and de-transitioning. Unfortunately for her, she said as soon as she returned to representing as her biological sex, people thought she was a trans woman, lol. Scary thing she says is that she just went to get counseling for general depression and anxiety, feeling a sense that she didn't belong. She went to Planned Parenthood to get some help and they immediately said, "you're trans!" and prescribed her testosterone, which was filled the next day. No counseling, non consultation, no confirmation, just immediately diagnosed as trans. Now she's stuck with a deeper voice that she hates and isn't sure will ever go back to normal.

I remember a discussion we had in Freshman English, this is years ago. A black student took issue with a definition of a word, can't even remember what it was but it was pretty innocuous, stating that "well, white people wrote the dictionary so everything in it is from their point of view." Myself and the professor argued that you need to have an agreement on language to a certain point or all words lose their meaning. How would we operate if the word for "car" meant something different to everyone based on race, let alone all the other facets of a person? We'd be unable to communicate. And why would anyone assume that when the word was defined, there was some racial element at play and not just the pragmatic effort to agree on definitions. Not to mention all the refinements and updates dictionaries go through.

This just makes me feel like that black kid won. Words have lost all common meaning anymore. Any word, thought, idea can now be branded with whatever you choose to believe or whatever supports your narrative. Gay is just one demographic, but here we are, adding words to dictionaries and changing the rules of language just to cater what is estimated at ~10% of the population. Where does it end?

Those shows aren't successful because they have LGBTQ characters, they're successful because they either have good writing or they're adaptations of beloved franchises (e.g. Last of Us wasn't successful because of gay characters, it was successful because it had a baked-in audience from the game).

Good for TV, though. I'm sick of LGBT characters just being ham-handedly shoved in for visibility's sake. I don't mind a good story that has LGBT characters, but we rarely get that. We get mediocre writing with pandering LGBT stuff shoved in. Then we're told we're bigots if we criticize it.
