i think this is all a symbolic psyop cuz of what Apollo represents. Watch for the number 33 to be mentioned soon, like there will be a report saying the protest lasted 33 days or something.

It's pretty much the same 40 moderators covering the most popular subreddits.

Maybe they were trying to get rid of problematic subs like wotb.

First they came for the moderators and I said nothing...because fuck those cunts.

Technically most people here have left Reddit, or have reducedthrir usage, so that analogy doesn't really work. Reddit is valuable because of the user content.

Reddit CEO slams protest leaders, saying he'll change rules that favor ‘landed gentry’

Huffman, also a Reddit co-founder, said he plans to pursue changes to Reddit’s moderator removal policy to allow ordinary users to vote moderators out more easily if their decisions aren’t popular. He said the new system would be more democratic and allow a wider set of people to hold moderators accountable.

The blow-back on that should be amazing to behold.

The same kind of Democracy we the people get when voting for our supreme leaders, the kind with corporate fingerprints everywhere you look I’m sure.

But strangely did not say anything about similar rules related to any "executive positions."
Such as CEOs.

Reddit is basically encouraging mods and users to call their bluff. There must be a noticable revenue hit because they wouldn't be issuing a threat like this after only 5 days of blackouts. If they follow through on their threats, people are going to find a different place from the one they had left and will migrate elsewhere. I suspect they are betting that the majority of their users are mindless scrolling zombies that won't notice or are not aware. We are approaching fuck around and find out time.

If you go to some of the political subs, I guess it's not hard to understand why they came to that conclusion.

But yes I think that this could be the catalyst for a decline of Reddit.

I predicted, days ago, that this might come to a PATCO/Reagan scenario.....

Ronald Reagan declared the PATCO strike a "peril to national safety" and ordered them back to work....On August 5, following the PATCO workers' refusal to return to work, the Reagan administration fired the 11,345 striking air traffic controllers who had ignored the order, and banned them from federal service for life.

If there is no consensus, but at least one mod wants to keep the community going, we will respect their decisions and remove those who no longer want to moderate from the mod team.

Translation: Hey, any low-level, power-hungry mods wanna stage a coup and become Top Mod? We can help!

...we will invite new, active moderators to keep these spaces open...

Let's see... roughly 5000 subreddits, maybe four positions per...

Where are they supposed to get 20,000 unpaid interns at a moment's notice?

ChatGPT?

[–]rundown9 9 insightful - 1 fun9 insightful - 0 fun10 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

My suggested solution: unprivatize the sub.

Wait a little bit, then reprivatize it again.

Possibly every hour. It seems a reasonable compromise.

And never officially say "indefinitely." just "for now."
And "we're not stopped. we're paused."

One of many good replies to this new sack of shit:

Moderators are stewards of these spaces and in a position of trust.

It's amazing how moderators are Special People when you want us to abide by the latest random rule, but the rest of the time it's being left hung out to dry.

If a moderator team unanimously decides to stop moderating, we will invite new, active moderators to keep these spaces open and accessible to users.

If you all can't understand the difference between "not moderating" and "running a protest against unjust policies"... well. I hope some day Reddit employees try to form a union.

Leaving a community you deeply care for and have nurtured for years is a hard choice

Nobody's "leaving a community". You're just trying to make up words to pretend we're "abandoning our post" when we're on strike.

This is basic union busting 101. Pretend your union organizers are disruptive and not doing their job, and fire them as fast as you can.

    [–]NetweaselContinuing the struggle 6 insightful - 2 fun6 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Well, that's one of the first things you do. You set Chatbot vs. Chatbot and see how long it takes for them to point at each other like spidermen, declaring "No, you're the robot!"

    Then you get the popcorn.

    [–]NetweaselContinuing the struggle 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

A well-designed set of Chatbot code would include secret subtext messages that only another set of Chatbot code could detect, so that they would both "know" that it was bot-to-bot communication, so that they could fuck with the people who set them at each other.

OK, now we have established beyond a shadow of a doubt that we are both humans... So, whaddaya think of the Jews?

    [–]CaelianPost No Toasties 4 insightful - 3 fun4 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 3 fun -  (2 children)

It might be interesting to see what happens when the chat bots start discussing the non-meaning of non-life with each other. I expect it to be something like the 1963 nouveau roman by Nathalie Sarraute called Les Fruits d'Or (The Golden Fruits). In this "new novel", nothing ever happens and pretentious people say pretentious things about a new novel called Les Fruits d'Or, which none of them have read or understood.

I'll stick with straight narrative. I've just started Robert de Boron's Merlin (circa 1200), one of the sources for Sir Thomas Mallory's Le Morte Darthur. Merlin is written in Old French, which is lots of fun. Merlin is very clever and has a great sense of humor, particularly for a child less than two years old :-)

Wow! How long until they disable the option to go private? They would not be doing this if they were not being hurt by it. I guess it's not a nothingburger after all.

Reading /rising just now, the entire tone of Reddit has taken a hit. It comes across to me as extra spammy. Almost Digg-like. Without the Mods and users, Reddit is screwed, IMHO. Why remove mods when Reddit could just start their own subreddit on any given topic and appoint their own mods? Clearly Reddit needs the existing communities. The IPO must be on thin ice.

      [–]RandomCollection[S] 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

The issue is that they aren't thinking about the long term.

Maybe they just don't care. They want to make a fast buck on the IPO.

      I don't think they've thought this through.

Consider a subreddit whose members/users overwhelmingly decided "this is bullshit. Fuck him."
Them "him" replaces the entire mod team and tears down the barricades.

I would guess that a major percentage of such a group of members/users would either
      A) Act as if the barricades were still up and say "nope. Not gonna do it." or
      B) Make the "new mods" earn their keep by giving them plenty to do.

This is more bullshit. Fuck him more.

Which isn’t much of a threat considering very few of them actually plan on leaving. The site is mostly back up and running. There are memes calling out Reddit and saying this is suicide, but I haven’t noted a decline in post rates, I haven’t seen people leaving. I just see people saying they don’t like it while doing absolutely nothing to get out.

At current the front page (logged out) has posts with 30K upvotes and 1-2K comments. Whether that’s a drop, I’m not 100% sure, but the idea that Reddit is a ghost town is wrong. Google has “Reddit alternatives” as the top search result for Reddit, but I’m not sure that means anything.
