And it's not claiming there's a dictatorship or including the other hype in the GB News article.

Good on the councel members to quite rightly complain about the new Labour party, and notes in the Guardian article almost get to the reasons for their concerns.

...That 10 members of the group were blocked from standing as county council candidates in May’s local elections after openly criticising the winter fuel allowance cut.

This kind of brutal management of the party, while also suspending or blocking others in Labour who disagree, is absolutely unforgivable. Tories did it to their own, but Labour shouldn't be this fascist. Those who are quitting the party are low-level local councel members, but their actions are very good, and essential for sending a message to the rest of the party. MPs have been suspended by Labour for noting their concerns regarding the cutoff of winter fuel assistance. (Though the pensioners effected should have received a raise in benefits recently, which was expected to offset winter fuel expenses in the same manner as the extra winter fuel allowance of £450, or something in that range. It's a complicated problem brought about by Big Oil's price gouging during the Tory leadership, earning 100s of billions in profit while raising rates an extra several hundred £ per year for many. Many pensioners can't afford it. Labour have also had to find £20 billion to address a deficit hidden in the previous Tory budget. Some of the budget desicisions were ill-advised, but they balanced the budget. Pissing off pensioners like this was stupid. Pissing off Labour party members who disagreed with aspects of the budget is also stupid. But like everything in British politics, this will pass and most people will forget about it. It's still fiscally better than 12 years of Tory corruption.)

[–]cunninglingus 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

I think the debunking nerd is picking an incredibly dumb video to debunk, as it doesn't appropriately specify what was inventive about each of those inventions. For example, anyone introducing the first invention would merely note that an improvement to the automatic gearshift was invented, not the first automatic gearshift itself. And wooden clocks have been around for 700 years, so one would have to specify which variation on a wooden clock was invented. And as admitted by the nerd, Miles improved on the automatic elevator door with his invention, though he didn't invent the automatic elevator door. Most inventions are improvements on previous inventions. One could make videos all day debunking idiots who make false claims without managing to debunk the claims to original inventions/improvements on stuff.

The president doesn't rebuild anything. In fact, he did nothing for New Orleans after Katrina, nor did he care. He also supported one of the worst wars in American history, based on Mosad's false evidence he, Cheney Rumsfeld knew was fake, while they and investors in the military industrial complex profited in the billions.

Also: New Orleans homeowners still in financial storm 18 years after Katrina

Many organizations and individuals helped rebuild New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, including:

New Orleans Area Habitat For Humanity: A Christian-based organization that has built or renovated over 800 homes since Katrina

Frederic Schwartz: An architect who was selected to replan one-third of the city

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE): Created the Hurricane Storm Damage Risk Reduction System (HSDRRS), a flood protection system that includes levees, floodwalls, floodgates, and storm surge barriers

NOAA Fisheries: Provided $1.2 million to restore wetlands and revitalize communities in the Lower Ninth Ward and St. Bernard Parish

Workers from around the region: Flocked to New Orleans to help with clean-up and construction projects

The U.S. government: Suspended certain regulations to allow workers whose documents had washed away to be hired for federally-funded construction projects

Other efforts to rebuild New Orleans include:

The Musicians' Village, a community project spearheaded by musicians Harry Connick Jr.

You can look that up if it's not already apparent. All of N.C. is not in 'ruins'. Small areas where residents received compensation will require years to recover. Look at what's happened in all areas in the US that suffered from massive storm damage. In some cases, residents take the FEMA money and the owner of the land sells that land to developers. That takes years to develop. If you wish to rebuild your home, there are infrastructure requirements that stall the process until the house can be built (eg. roads covered in deep mud, downed electricity lines, damaged bridges &c).

But do tell your congresspeople that you want a more isolationist policy for the US (though this would weaken the dollar, remove the US from international political influence, reduce US trade with other countries, kill military industry jobs, and much more, reversing US post WW II policy). It's worth a shot.

First on the complaint list should be Israel, however. They don't need one red cent from the US for their genocide and ethnic cleansing.

Good question. My reading of his work - including the Silmarillion - is that he tried as much as possible to write actual histories that could not be easily simplified into allegories. Readers naturally referred to his works as allegories, which he considered annoying because they were histories to him, grounded in actual history. Though they were also allegorical, they could not be simplified as to the specific allegorical messages they may have been, as his histories are built up from a past that extends hundreds if not thousands of years, in actual history. Middle Earth was thus - for example - it's own historical world that could not compare 1:1 with another history, but rather tha many other histories.

I'm surprised anyone thinks he despised allegory. There's been a lot of discusson on the way in which the Hobbit and LOTR are based on the circumstances of the English, of the 20th c, or 18th c, or of Anglo-Saxon England, or all three. It's part of what makes the 'everyman' in those series much like the English common man, and is part of their success as novels.

Tolkien described hobbits as "rustic English people" with a combination of small imagination and great courage. He also said that hobbits are a "variety" or "branch" of humanity, related to humans but considered a separate people.

Referring to that science as wrong is an attempt to build a narrative that favors science-denying disinformation spread by Big Oil and the wealthy who profit from it and other related industries (eg plastic &c). So you figure the institutional critical race and gender theory didn't take?

Putting normal history about the abuses of the past in history books is a normal update, nothing to worry about. It teaches kids the actual history, rather than the 19th century lies of white saviour "providence" of the "rise of the West" (at the expense of the lives and land of those without guns, immunity to germs, and steel; see Guns, Germs and Steel by J Diamond, albeit much too simplistic). "Rise of the West" histories have dominated school studies for two centuries. A recent interest in looking at history throught the eyes of those who were conquered, exploited, or merely misrepresented is an approach to factual history. It developed at a time when interdisciplinary courses and 'critical thinking' components in courses were developing. Hence the name critical race theory may have crept into the same "paradigm" shift in history studies. Anything wrong with that? Of course not.

Meanwhile, radical Republicans attacked public school systems because an educated public would never vote for Republicans. Recall the woman Trump made director of the Dept of Education, who used our tax dollars for religious schools. That was another attack and in that case, part of the violation of the separation of church and state offerd by Trump &co when promising the overturning of RvW. Moreover, a couple parents could disrupt an entire school district with their complaints about 'critical race theory'. It worked. There was also a movement for home schooling, which has fucked up a lot of kids.

TLDR: complaints about critical race theory are for political manipulation by Republicans. Nothing more.

Or was this the intended outcome?

School textbooks in Texas and Florida contain lies and religious content. I've not seen complaints about textbooks in other states. School boards in Texas and Florida have also been overtaken by crazy people. Republicans achieved some of their goals in those states.

Trump has promised to abolish the Dept of Education. And there's much more planned in Project 2025 for the destruction of public education (which should however be the cornerstone of the Democracy). Moreover, Musk has noted that Americans are too stupid to take on IT jobs for which he wants more Indians to be imported. We're fucked.

There was no such spending and borrowing for the rich in the past 4 years. Now get ready for another tax cut that will cost us another $10 trillion, and much more.

Indeed I hope journalists will watch the DOJ closely, whichever investigative journalists will be paid to do that. Most noteworthy might be the inaction by the DOJ, and indeed the inaction of most other agencies that Republicans have promised to address with deregulations. And of course those AMAZING deregulations they've promised will allow for corruption, at the expense of the 99%. Makes me wonder why anyone would have mentioned deregulations as a campaign promise, and moreso what are the reasons anyone would have voted for those politicians.

We agree, corporations have been corrupt. Many of them, and their wealthy colleagues helped spread anti-vax disinformation. Big Pharma also benefited from that spread of lies about vaccines, which prolonged COVID cases and helped the virus mutate and spread further, requiring more vaccines. Almost all billionaires benefitted from the spread of COVID. Without the anti-vax lies, billions of others would have followed the appropriate scientific advice from day one: quarantine, social distance, wear masks, and take the vaccine.

Meanwhile on Reddit: Morons Celebrate Blind Compliance by Questionable in MeanwhileOnReddit

[–]cunninglingus 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I'm of course exaggerating with the note of 12 cases. You've kindly provided the numbers for me.

Lets add up the TGA numbers: 788

Number of COVID vaccine doses administered in Australia: 143,110,000

Hence the likelihood of reporting a side effect after taking the vaccine is 1 in 18.034264 million.

Were the side effects due to pre-existing conditions? Were they due to allergies? Were the side effects treatable with blood thinners and other drugs? Were they temporary? Were they life threatening?

We can use Australia as an small example of the side effects of 12.7 billion doses. Historically vaccines obviously reduce the spread of viruses, by helping build immunity to the virus. There have been examples of side effects, but the likelyhood in Ausralia has been 1 in 18 million.

Thus if given a choice of spreading a serious virus that causes numerous problems and potentially death, or providing a helpful vaccine to reduce that spread, you know what's recommended.

Secondly, guess who benefits from spreading the anti-vax lies and misinformation? Not the 99%. Those lies only benefit those who want the virus to spread. The spreading of COVID helped numerous billionaires. Some of them helped pay for the heavily-funded anti-vax campaigns.

We've discussed this at length at Saidit. The anti-vax audience will not believe science. Getting them to believe anti-vax lies has been helpful in getting them believe many other lies, also promoted by the .01%. The problem we face is not a vaccine in this case. It's the spread of lies by the .01%.

First, this is the anti-vax shill who wrote that false argument:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Mercola

If anyone bothers to checks it, they get:

Early CDC definitions about vaccine "that stimulates a person’s immune system to produce immunity":

https://web.archive.org/web/20210826113846/https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vac-gen/imz-basics.htm

Note that the entire phrase is important. The vaccine 'stimulates a person's immune system' as the aim is generally to produce imunity; it's not a guarantee of immunity. So this is a matter of basic reading comprehension, which anti-vaxxers can conveniently overlook with the excuse that they were home schooled or whatever.

Secondly, some of those footnote links no longer work and one has to go to the new CDC page to see what changed:

https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/glossary/index.html#heading-v

Vaccine - A suspension of live (usually attenuated) or inactivated microorganisms (e.g., bacteria or viruses), fractions of the agent, or genetic material of the administered to induce immunity and prevent infectious diseases and their sequelae. Some vaccines contain highly defined antigens (e.g., the polysaccharide of Haemophilus influenzae type b or the surface antigen of hepatitis B); others have antigens that are complex or incompletely defined (e.g.Bordetella pertussisantigens or live attenuated viruses).

The key phrase for the anti-vax readers is: "administered to induce immunity and prevent infectious diseases and their sequelae." Hence the attempt in this case is induce immunity or prevent infectious deseases, but again it's of course not a guarantee of anything. And the language is so similar as not to imply anything actually changed.

Some of the 30 mm holes in the tail and fuselage are round and entered directly from a lateral scatter position, rather than a forward position (where the engine is), indicating that the missile used in this case was:

The 57E6 missile is designed to engage a wide range of aerial targets [eg drones] at distances from 1200 to 20,000 meters and altitudes from 15 to 15,000 meters.

The 57E6 missile operates in complex electronic countermeasure environments, with initial command guidance from the combat vehicle, mid-course correction via radio commands, and terminal infrared homing. The 30-mm artillery ammunition includes HEI rounds for maximum damage to aerial targets and APIT rounds for visible engagement and penetration of light armor, providing continuous engagement capability with a high rate of fire.

Yep - that's why anti-vaxxers are the best supporters one can have for the Republican party. It's impossible to to get them to believe in science and facts about vaccines, and thanks to that, they'll also believe the many lies of the Repubican disinformation propaganda. It's the perfect political support group for a political party that has been trying its best to rob your Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, EPA, Dept of Education, Postal Services, FDA, and so many other goverment processes and agencies in order to - with the help of borrowing money from China - give $trillions in tax cuts and deregulation to the .01% and corporations. A significant proportion of the 99% now believe so many lies that the Repubicans can put on their clownshow, take their money, and leave the US worse off, as they did when Trump was previously president, but much worse this time. There is also significantly more hatred in the promises of the upcoming presidency and Republican-led government. They'll continue to divide and grift. Medical science hasn't changed. What's changed is the spread of Republican disinformation and its impact on many who want to believe the lies.

It's easy for you to look up what a vaccine does, how it helps build the immune system, and how it helps reduce the spread of a virus. There's a long history of this science, and those who take vaccines can easily understand this. Study that, rather than repeat lies.

I read this and looked up the blogger's other comments and see that he's had a lot to write about Luigi, and was not necessarily his 'friend' as some reports mention. This latest blog is inciteful, while also self-congratulatory, and an attempt not to mention anything too polarizing or controversial, so as not to lose potential readership.

He noted before that Luigi is anti-woke, and a fan of RFK Jr, because Luigi was especially concerned about the many conspiracy theories spread on social media, and serving the right wing audiences of RFK Jr and Trump. Rather than a God complex, I think he was angry about his bad back, and angry with himself for not achieving more by age 26, converting much of that anger - according to his friends - toward the conspiracy theories. He knew that shooting the leading healthcare company's CEO would make him almost as famous as Kaczynski. It seems the blogger also tries to say nothing critical about the CEO's company, which caused millions to suffer. I'd compare Luigi with many others in their mid-20s who are very angry about their prospects, want to do something worthwhile, and happen to be brainwashed by conspiracy theories.
