Damn dawg, I hope you got enough viagra for all that jerkin' you're doing.

The Viagra is not the problem. Tennis elbow is a bitch!

Just took a look at ModCoord and some subs with decent volume are planning on staying blacked out indefinitely. You know what sub is not going dark? Ukraine. Shocking!

[–]shatabee5 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

I wonder if subs not going dark is an indication of whether they are CIA propaganda or not.

[–]NetweaselContinuing the struggle 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

If I were in charge of that, I would have had a percentage "go dark" and a percentage not.
Specifically so that the action (or lack thereof) would not be an indicator.

[–]InumaGaming Socialist[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Not really.

I'm just too lazy to put mine to dark.

[–]newguy 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I heard a couple subs accidentally went dark early, at midnight moscow time, oops

Reddit can't have the narrative control getting out of hand during an election season so they're using this API drama to make sure that whatever dissent may be found on their subs will be slim to none.

[–]magnora7 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Of course they are, they're getting IPO investor money that dwarfs whatever losses they're incurring. Also they can't go back on their decision or they'll look weak to investors. So I'd be incredibly surprised if reddit changed course

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

In all honesty, this is about getting the money to expand their dark operations involving a.I. development. Once they go public, they may be able to corner the market on social media - the WEF already have a subreddit on there and bullshit gates has a stake in it. Can’t see this site (said it) surviving the next 10 years unless you make a deal with an alien devil, or an AI attack ruins it.

If this message sticks around, many will be able to see this sites veracity on welcoming human users. That work is messy and full of twilight ignorance, if it’s gone - our forecast was more accurate.

And all the people complaining will download the official app and continue to browse reddit anyways. Redditors are so addicted to their scrolling fix they wouldn't leave reddit for anything. Nothing will change. I miss my niche subs for hobbies and media I love, MMA, final fantasy, Baki the grappler manga, but I sacrificed that to stay away from the cancer that is reddit and send a message.

Redditors are too weak as people, mentally and spiritually to make that sacrifice.

My current hosts file:

127.0.0.1 .reddit.

127.0.0.1 old.reddit.com

Until I hear that u/spez has listened to the users.

They tipped their hand with the two days of protest. You already told them you’d back down, why would they care?

[–]GoblinJ 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I don't follow you, maybe my wording was confusing, I'm never going on Reddit ever again, ever. But I'm only one person so it doesn't matter much.

[–]MaiqTheTrue 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Reddit doesn’t have to worry about losing much money because they can’t stay off Reddit for more than two days. Therefore, there’s no reason for Reddit to stop doing what they’re doing.

It’s really one of the most important rules of negotiations— you have to be willing to walk away from a bad deal. If not, there’s no reason not to insist on getting my way. You’ll take whatever I’m going you, why would I give you anything?

[–]UncleWillard56 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I always hoped for a site I could actually express my opinions and have conversations after Plastic.com closed its doors. Reddit was okay for a while, but it's canceraids now. God forbid you veer even slightly right on your opinions. You will be dubbed a nazi immediately and brigaded/banned out of the sub. Now, I'm thinking maybe there will be a new, lefty place that will draw the flies away and what's left may be palatable. Or am I just dreaming?

[–]InumaGaming Socialist[S] 11 insightful - 1 fun11 insightful - 0 fun12 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Most of the people in WotB are mainly lefties that got attacked for going outside the corporate party duopoly.

One of the main things was to drop labels and focus on argument more.

We also are pretty used to digital migration and usually the mods do turtle taxes on the most obnoxious.

It's been wild.

They aren't making this decision based on traffic data.

There are at least 2 categories of reasons for making significant public changes in any institution.

1) The stated reason(s)

2) The actual reason(s)

The second category is rarely discussed openly, but the world begins to make more sense if you look for them.

Hints around the truth are occasionally mentioned in the last few paragraphs of an article. Rarely at the beginning of an article.

In his AMA, Huffman also took a few shots at Apollo’s developer Christian Selig. Yesterday, Selig claimed Reddit has been telling other developers that he tried to blackmail the social media platform. According to Selig, what really happened is that Reddit misinterpreted a remark he made as a threat.

When asked about the blackmail allegations, Huffman said: Selig's "behavior and communications with us has been all over the place—saying one thing to us while saying something completely different externally; recording and leaking a private phone call—to the point where I don’t know how we could do business with him.” .
Selig shot back, saying "Do you genuinely not see how you making up stories about blackmail and threats would be what leads to difficulty working together, not me defending myself?"

My first thought:

recording and leaking a private phone call

Damn, what the hell did he say in alleged confidentiality that he didn't want people to know?

[–]Maniak🥃😾 7 insightful - 2 fun7 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 2 fun -  (7 children)

Among other things, he apologized profusely for misunderstanding the Apollo guy and that it was now absolutely clear that there was no blackmail attempt whatsoever.

Before then jumping right back on Reddit and proclaiming that the Apollo guy tried to blackmail him.

Never admitted any wrongdoing at any point, of course.

[–]NetweaselContinuing the struggle 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (6 children)

No, no, before that....
DURING the ("recorded and leaked") phone call.

Consider.. "How dare he! He recorded and leaked our discussion of my plans to go to my family reunion!"

[–]Maniak🥃😾 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

Well this was the recorded phone call in question.

[–]NetweaselContinuing the struggle 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

Wait... he was apologizing for claiming that the other person on the phone was blackmailing him, and then got upset that the other person (who was just accused of blackmail) was recording the apology?????

[–]penelopepnortneyBecome ungovernable 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

recording the apology?????

Not just one apology but like 3 or 4 times at least.

[–]Maniak🥃😾 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Precisely. Because right after that call where he made the apology for 'misunderstanding', he claimed again that the guy was blackmailing him.

And then that guy published the audio and the transcript of the call, which is when that Cuntery Executive Officer switched his whining to "yeah no but it's all those various vague communication issues from him that make it so difficult to work together".

So his lies got found out, again, and that's what upset him.

As tends to happen with lying egocentric douchebaggy cunts.

It's funny in a way. I knew next to nothing about spez before this whole thing, and now I know more than I ever wanted or cared to know :/

[–]NetweaselContinuing the struggle 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I wonder what percentage of the people whom he calls in the future will also be recording.....

[–]3andfro 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

And if they know this history....

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

So leave Reddit.

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

What kind of porn do you find on Reddit?

[–]TitsAndWhiskey 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Do…do you really not know? Reddit is where girls go to promote their OF with short clips and pictures.

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Ah. Man. That’s too much searching and clicking.

If there’s anything really good, I guess I’ll take the time.

But I would rather stare at an extra curvy piece of wood that brows Reddit looking for nudes.

[–]Brewdabier 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

So the big news is that there can be a lot more subs that function without the ones going dark.

From the comments near the top, there might be 2.8 million subreddits with various degrees of operation so you gotta take all this with a grain of salt.

Reddit has always operated funny business by propping up their numbers since their inception as well as changing things under the hood if they can get away with it. So don't expect that this changes anything in the short term. Just be aware that it might be forcing people to think of other options as Reddit continues to expose how their own fraudulence puts them in really bad positions.

[–]Maniak🥃😾 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

From another comment in that thread:

There are absolutely not 2.8 million active subreddits. I just spent like an hour trying to find data on this. Nobody cites their sources. I used a dump of subreddit statistics from 2018, when there were just over a million subreddits. (Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/ListOfSubreddits/comments/8gzmmv/i_created_a_better_csv_textspreadsheet_list_of/)

There were ~34,000 subreddits with more than a 1000 subscribers. And 100,000 subreddits with more than 125 subscribers.

Looking at https://subredditstats.com/ the top 5000 subreddits make up about 30% (based on an estimated 840,000 posts a day by some reddit user on a subreddit that’s currently dark so I can’t give a good link) of the daily posts and surely far more than 30% of the daily traffic.

[–]BlackhaloPurity Pony: Pусский бот 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

surely far more than 30% of the daily traffic.

99.9%, I wager.

[–]Maniak🥃😾 12 insightful - 2 fun12 insightful - 1 fun13 insightful - 2 fun -  (8 children)

Even with their 'millions' of operational subs, the big ones that are participating in the blackout are not nothing, no matter what this cunt tries to spin.

Just on the tech side, r/amd, r/nvidia, all the windows/microsoft subs, ...

Then general and massive subs like r/gaming, r/pics, r/science, r/sports, ...

Whether those will keep participating in future blackouts or leave altogether remains to be seen of course, but those represent a ton of traffic, not just in new content but also in searches from outside Reddit. If they leave or go private, that's a big dip, and a million tiny subs are not compensating for that.

More importantly, and something that this dipshit doesn't seem to be capable of understanding, there's the user aspect.

If they kill third-party apps that users use to make Reddit usable and moderators use to make subs manageable, no amount of operational subs will save the platform.

Not that they necessarily care much about that, if the goal is to fake it until the IPO, make bank then run away with the money.

reddit's only purpose now is to turn people into porn addicts; porn addicted brains are easier to manipulate. Plenty of NGO bot farms will be able to afford the exorbitant API fees

[–]BlackhaloPurity Pony: Pусский бот 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

reddit's only purpose now is to turn people into porn addicts

:eyeroll: There are far, FAR better sites for that.

[–]InumaGaming Socialist[S] 6 insightful - 2 fun6 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 2 fun -  (2 children)

To be fair, he didn't say it was a good plan, just that they're into dumbing down the consumer base with titillating nonsense.

[–]captainramen🇺🇸🛠️ MAGA Communist 🛠️🇺🇸 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

It's not just about dumbing people down, although that's part of it. It's more fundamental than that. Porn is a form of mind control IMO

[–]InumaGaming Socialist[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

[–]ageingrockstar 8 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 0 fun9 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

this dipshit

Just to pick up on this, the two founders of reddit, Steve Huffman (spez) and Alexis Ohanian (kn0thing) are just absolutely ghastly people, who are early progenitors of the 'techbro' culture fostered by Silicon Valley Venture Capital. They directly influenced the culture of reddit right from the beginning, not least fostering the sexism that has always been present on the site. I don't think reddit will ever grow away from the early culture they fostered, and thus it is doomed to continue to get worse and worse. Their weird 'values' are knitted into the DNA of reddit. There are good people (users and even a small fraction of mods) on reddit and there is sometimes good discussion, but they are increasingly having to fight against the general awfulness that permeates the place.

(Aaron Swartz is sometimes credited also as a founder, but in reality he was pushed onto the project when his own early YC funded project didn't gain traction. He quickly grew to loathe reddit and soon left. I doubt he ever really felt he fitted in with the other two.)

[–]InumaGaming Socialist[S] 7 insightful - 1 fun7 insightful - 0 fun8 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Aaron always had an activist streak.

I found his path was the one I needed to choose for myself even if I had no power. It truly kept him Grounded while the other two because the ghouls they are.

Alexis especially. He put Reddit up for CIA spying before his departure.

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

It’s about to get worse! The alien is going to capture the whole market and with chatgpt? Talk about dark operations.
