I'm a bit confused about whose decision this was. It looks like it is the advertising agency, Goodby Silverstein, that made this decision. This is an ad agency used by the named companies, but it's unclear if they were involved in making this decision at all.

“We are taking this action to protest the platform’s irresponsible propagation of hate speech, racism, and misleading voter information. We encourage clients and our own people to join us.”

It sounds like if we want to boycott something, it should be this ad agency, and we perhaps we should promote more ethical ad agencies that companies could use.

There are a lot of people here who also don't like it. Someone commented (don't remember if it was here or another site) "it's like you get to choose between pepsi and coke every 4 years" for Americans. (Are you speaking of American "left" and "right" here?) I would rather focus on policies and doing well as a country. I'm tired of all this destructive stuff people do to get elected.

SaidIt tries not to police opinions too much so there's probably always going to be people saying stuff you don't like. That doesn't mean they speak for anyone but themselves. You can block individual accounts if you get a comment reply from them by looking at the reply in your inbox.

[–]yellow_algebra_31 6 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 0 fun7 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I think being a platform for high-quality intellectual discussion is consistent with how SaidIt describes itself, and consistent with the content policy and other design decisions.

I don't think planning for SaidIt to remain always small is necessarily the right thing to do though. It may grow, and it seems like the admins would like it to.

The comparison to discord is interesting. I don't feel cozy and friendly here quite the same way I have even on larger discord channels, perhaps because it feels less personal, less like a chat/hangout and more like, well, a discussion forum. Also keep in mind that most of the traffic here is people just reading without commenting or even voting.

[–]yellow_algebra_31 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I never used many of these companies, and I've stopped using others since. These will be the hardest for me:

  • I can move my bank account to a local bank. That's probably the highest impact thing I can do.
  • Mastercard: fuck. How tf am I supposed to engage in commerce? Visa and mastercard? Do I just send checks by mail now?
  • I could move my email account to Protonmail (or a better alternative that doesn't give in to DDOSers). Google docs I'll need an alternative to. I guess I can just keep that stuff locally, I don't really use it for anything that really needs sharing. Maybe I already use alternative browsers but I'm not sure what's best. searx? duckduckgo? startpage? qwant? I'll need to download my email data. Youtube will be hard but I guess I gotta do it.
  • Twitter will be hard, I follow people there. Maybe I can learn how to make a tweet mirroring bot to the fediverse. No, that's probably not realistic. Fuck. Those tweets get me through the day and provide my news. This one I will need help with, comments appreciated.
  • Guess I gotta stop visiting reddit subs for good.
  • There are a lot of payment processor and fund transfer stuff on that list. We need some legit options to switch to.
  • Mozilla, yikes. Guess it's time to ditch firefox? Suggestions?
  • Microsoft?! Time to do that switch to Linux I've been putting off.
  • No more gardening supplies from Lowe's... or Home Depot...
  • No logitech purchases, I potentially needed some new hardware...
  • Intel?! and AMD? How tf am I supposed to do computing? I think we need a list of computer hardware and software suppliers that are legit.
  • FexEx?! Ebay?! Alternatives please?
  • Can commit to not using Discord again.
  • CVS, yikes.
  • Creative Commons?!
  • Burt's Bees? :'( I liked their stuff, but fortunately I already found another lip balm maker. This is something your local small business artisinal beauty products maker can do, btw.
  • I think I gotta get a new cell provider.
  • Amazon :(

We need a full legit whole supply line, guys. This is absurd. Don't ever fucking sell out ever under any fucking circumstance every fucking again, you guys here me? No letting somebody "buy" your company. This is one of the oldest tricks in the book and they've been doing it since the invention of agriculture.

This is a longer list than I thought it would be. I think I'll start with the banks, that seems like the highest-impact. Started doing this several years back but never made the transfer, ashamed now that I didn't. Time to go look up all that old info the Occupy people put together about banking.

Any helpful info about alternatives greatly appreciated.

kindof thinking out loud here

We need shelter, food, clean water, clothing, and community.

Yes I have been thinking about this. I have felt for a long time like I don't really understand "money" the way I understand needing food or something. I was thinking maybe listing these sorts of real things, maybe in order of necessity, is a way to start building an infrastructure. Idk. Maybe not quite the right way to think of it. But something more material than "money". Though I think we should still be supporting the USD, we rely on the US for protection and it would be nice to pay down the debt one day.

Let's not be divided in the way they divided us. Before we might be left or right, men or women, artists or engineers, we are people. We are all here looking for community in one way or another. I think it would help if the Pyramid of Debate rules were much clearer. It's a bit subjective and unevenly enforced right now. This creates a problem where neither users nor mods really know what the standards are, and enforcement is uneven and thus unfair. And where users don't have a clear idea of what's being censored and what's not.

I know "there's no political solution" is popular in some parts around here, but people wouldn't be doing desperate things with the vote if it didn't matter at all. Vote.org says it's mission is to get people from generally low-turnout groups to vote. I don't know if they had the alt-right in mind when they wrote this, but I think many people here qualify, considering all the discouragement people get for voting and political participation in these parts sometimes. And if you are younger or less wealthy, you probably are part of a measured to be part of a lower turnout demographic.

I don't want to tell anyone what to think, I'm just one random person. But since you've probably heard from a bunch of people telling you not to vote already: please vote. Your vote counts. You count. This is important. And the site tries to make it easy. And if you can do it without detracting from other activities that are more important right now, please help your family and friends and frens all vote too. There are a lot of people who don't want you to, which might mean that it's that much more important that you do.

Yeah, I saw the links in your OP before but I hadn't seen an ordered list before, that's what was so interesting to me about the jpeg I linked. It seemed like an ordered list was in the works here on the sub wiki so if the work's completed elsewhere it might be worth linking. I linked this jpeg on the wiki. I wish I knew what project it was from but I only happened upon that jpeg.

I replied a while back that I thought the first, highest-impact thing I could do was to change where I'm banking, and after seeing this ordered list I feel vindicated in that. I've learned some about how to do that and started exploring other options but I haven't completed that step yet.

I'm not sure how high priority this project is for you right now but I thought I may as well ask since it seemed like an ordered list was the next step for the project as you were thinking of it about a month ago (idk if things have changed since then). It seems like the majority of the donations have come from only Bank of America so something that targeted even just only them might have an effect, and there are a lot of choices for banks. IIRC Bank of America has also previously come under question during the Occupy Wallstreet stuff for investing in companies people thought were engaging in unethical practices. I don't know if they changed their practices in response at that time.

It's your project, and I don't know whether or not this is the highest priority activity right now. If other stuff is higher priority right now then that's probably where the focus should stay right now. But I remembered this project when I saw that list and I haven't been keeping up with stuff here as much lately, so I figured I may as well ask.

ETA: Looks like Bank of America's donations did not go to BLM specifically.

Has a complete list been made somewhere else? I saw this elsewhere but I don't know what it's from.

Thank you for the reply. I appreciate having the position stated openly and clearly.

I've copied a translation of Colossians 3: 18-25 for convenience here:

18 Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.

19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.

20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.

21 Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.

22 Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. 23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. 25 Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for their wrongs, and there is no favoritism.

what if instead of "businesses" people organized economic activity around the economic needs of those who were part of their kinship network? would you consider that an act of aggression?

What does "submit" mean? To whom and by whom is it done? Under what circumstances? That's what I'm asking. It is very easy to tell a nice story with pleasant pictures and words and implications of good outcomes, but nice pictures and pleasant words can also be used to paint a good picture over something bad. I'm asking for the unembelished full statement of what this sub is advocating people do.

I also don't like it when I see people thinking American politics has much relevance outside America. Sure, we share lots of common heritage and we should appreciate that and have solidarity with each other where it makes sense, but when some guy in Finland starts talking about gender neutral pronouns in a language that natively has them? Really?... Like you said, each country has their own problems they should be keeping their focus on. We can learn from each other but even then we must adapt ideas for our own local context.

I also feel we have some shared issues though. For example some of the non-free-speech stuff in some European countries worries me. Yes I don't live there and it's not my place to say, but it feels like criminalizing anti-immigration sentiment in Britain is related to suppression of anti-immigration sentiment in the US. (Though yes, Britain and US are more connected than some.) Or the anti-holocaust-denial laws in Germany seem worrying to me, even though I'm not a German. Or people telling the Ukraine they shouldn't compare the Holodomor to the Holocaust. And there are some campaigns that are clearly international, like the list of countries and their laws regarding homo- relationships. I don't want to intrude since these aren't my countries and I don't understand a lot of the context there, but if people from those countries wanted to work with me on what feels like a shared issue, I would want to work with them.

Does the US really have such a big influence on social media comparatively? People have their own local languages to do their politics in, don't they? A lot of people use English for international stuff I assume, but for local stuff? Maybe it would help to try to separate political stuff by country more visibly.

Is this to say that, if it were not American-specific, you might be interested? As an American I think I should be primarily US-focused, but I think some of these same issues affect people in other countries too, especially Western countries. Do you relate to some of these issues? Would you be interested in collaboration in some other way, though perhaps not on this specific topic in this specific way?

"Nation" comes from the same "nat-" as "nativity" and "natal". Birth. It's about the people. People need a safe place to exist and thrive, that's primarily what nationalism is about imo.

eta: to be clear, not just "any people" in general from anywhere, but specifically the people that are part of a specific origin or birth.

Rather than trying to make an up-front commitment to contribute something, I think my interest will be apparent in my participation (or not) as this project moves forward.

I am extremely disturbed by the violent totalitarian leftist stuff. There are a lot of things going on that I don't think are ok.

I think we should be working together as Americans (well, I'm American, so I'm coming from that perspective, but this kind of stuff affects the entire Western world.) So I guess we should be working together as Westerners, and perhaps on a larger scale than that as well.

As an American living in a democracy, I believe it's ultimately the responsibility of the people to maintain the country properly.

I have some of ideas, but presumably others do too? It doesn't feel difficult to come up with ideas. It also feels like a big question. Maybe I will have to think about it some.

The elites have the media, Hollywood, the school system, corrupt politicians, major corporations, the biggest tech companies, and even violent groups like Antifa and BLM all working to divide us. We desperately need to coalesce into some kind of functional group to counter this. Hopefully this can be a nucleation site for a counter offensive.

I would push back against the use of "elites". There's nothing wrong with excellence; what's wrong is the violence, abuse of the system, totalitarianism, etc. In my mind. It feels to me like the threat is violent, totalitarian bolshevism/communism, not "elites". I think this "anti-elite" (including anti-rich) sentiment is another form of divide-and-conquer, and it's one that SaidIt has a problem with. I think it is part of the bolshevist subversion.

I think they're not quite as smart as they think they are. People make mistakes. Smart people get too into their theories and sometimes aren't correct.

Or they're self-interested and believe their primary duty is to take care of themselves, as is everyone's, so they have used their time to do that instead.
