You're absolutely right.

I wish I could say it's just the admins, but a lot of mods are very censorship-happy. Like you said, you can't have free thought without free speech, and mods locking threads and banning users has led to a stifling of free speech on reddit.

This could work. Honestly, people should be using pseudonyms on the Internet wherever possible. Adblockers are always a great idea, although it's important to dismiss them on sites that you value.

Thanks. This is a great summary because it explains the activities of each company. They all have issues but some are clearly worse than others. I'm personally more critical of companies that condemned "white privilege" than ones that give lip service to BLM. Google is terrible as well due to its association with censorship.

I agree with Google, everyone should be minimizing Google usage as much as possible.

I have a different take on social networks though. Boycotting them is basically self-censorship, which is obviously counterproductive. Instead, I recommend boycotting their advertisers. This does depend on the platform though - I actually think Facebook is one of the better ones (although you have to be very careful with their privacy violations)

100% agree. That's core to what I want to do.

For example, I don't think reddit can be effectively boycotted by not using it. However, we could contact its advertisers and let them know we won't use them as long as they support reddit's censorious policies.

A company that donated to help local businesses or something would be fine, but a company that donated to the SPLC would be very important to boycott.

I will be curbing my spending on many of these based on how they chose to word their statements.

This seems the responsible course of action. As you say, basically every company made some statement. I personally have no issue with ones that put out standard statements of unity.

What needs to happen is a ranked list of companies from best to worst. The companies that put out the most divisive or antagonistic statements would go at the bottom, and would be the priority to boycott. Do you have any suggestions?

"Reddit has crossed the line. They have succumbed to a culture of censorship. We will never forget the day they took down /r/BigChungus."

More seriously, you might just make a generic statement about censorship. You could also say how the new reddit rules openly allow hate against "the majority". You could link to /r/WatchRedditDie or /r/Reclassified.

But someone who would dismiss the censorship as "oh, well it's just right-wingers and transphobe feminists getting banned" probably can't be swayed anyways.

Is there any way to retain social structure without having it destroyed in the name of "progression"? by PencilPusher55 in whatever

[–]Aureus 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

How can you keep the structure of a society without destroying the fundamental things that cause it to function well in the name of being progressive?

This is a very important question, but it might be too broad to answer meaningfully.

In the context of a society that is already functioning well, I would say the preservation of incentives that keep everyone onboard with the nation's goals and values. For example, people will like capitalism as long as capitalism works for the vast majority of people. As long as there is still opportunity, and regular people can own homes and start families under capitalism, they will support it. Unfortunately, nowadays we are seeing a breakdown of that.

In addition, in terms of national unity, you have to make sure everyone agrees on the same values. Not too long ago, most Americans agreed that America is a positive development, its culture is ultimately a good thing, the Constitution secures freedom (and freedom is important), and the founding fathers were not evil. Today, due to open-borders policies and the subversion of education, we're seeing a trend away from that, where many people are not onboard with the national cause and indeed feel no loyalty to America at all.

So what about in the context of modern society, which is not functioning well? I'm working on it. I think the gist is moving people out of big coastal cities and out of blue states generally, setting up their own intentional communities, and striving towards self-sufficiency and co-sufficiency. Comment or message me if you're interested in discussing this further.

You don't need to. But I've made a ton of these threads, and what inevitably happens is that people drift out of contact. I feel like a lot of people get excited about a boycott, upvote the thread, leave a comment or two, and then forget about it. You can't run an effective boycott that way.

The chatroom is a way to keep people involved and connected, even across platforms. For example, I've posted this thread on Ruqqus as well. Normally SaidIt and Ruqqus are totally separate communities, but a chatroom can bring them together for an important project like this.

The chatroom is based on the open-source Matrix protocol btw, using the Riot client, both of which are very popular and respectful of user privacy.

If the "mainstream" media and alt-media are not to be trusted as news sources. If the "mainstream" media and alt-media are not to be trusted as news sources.

I 100% support the alternative media, I'm just saying they can't report on what they don't know. They can be the best and most objective news in the world, but if they don't have on-the-ground reporters, they're dependent on agencies that do to give them the facts. They're not wrong, just limited.

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but this is a Matrix chatroom dedicated to The Great Boycott project:

https://riot.im/app/#/room/!KnzRAdGMqbdEjFwSXx:matrix.org?via=matrix.org

Basically it's a place to brainstorm companies to boycott and better alternatives. With more and more companies getting onboard with censorship and supporting radical propaganda, boycotting them has become essential to counter these narratives.

That's awesome. Thanks.

It's ironic, but I think the SJWs were right about one thing when it comes to education. It's not great if kids are only taught about the U.S. and Europe, and not about the rest of the world. If kids don't know the real history of the entire world, then they can be tricked into believing the rest of the world was pure utopias, while Europe was a bunch of evil colonizers. The reality is that the rest of the world had all the bad things Europe is criticized for.

For example, the mainstream narrative is that the Spanish just walked in and toppled the Aztecs by themselves. But the reality is that the Aztec Empire was toppled by its own former slave states with the aid of the Spanish.

More education and context would solve this. But the SJWs don't want that.

The state with the most votes for Trump was Texas. The second-most was Florida. The third-most was California.

There are enough conservatives in California to turn most of the country red, if they would just move.

All I can think is that these people are lazy, or solely there for the economic opportunities. But like it or not, we need them.

This is an excellent thread. It deserves far more attention. Thank you for writing it.

Your description dovetails with a lot of my own thoughts. Aside from the UN, many US Democrats are trying to force people into cities and legislate away the suburbs. This leads to all the problems you described.

Personally, I'm trying to find ways to circumvent this trend. IMO the only option at this point is a mass exodus from cities, and the development of alternatives elsewhere. The silver lining of the Internet is that it allows people in remote places to telework. People could set up homesteads, or congregate in small to medium-sized intentional communities. These could provide a viable alternative to cities.

What are your thoughts on this?

Who do you want to win in the 2020 US election and why? What do you think the impact of Trump or Biden going forward will be for us? by LadyEuropaEffy in debatealtright

[–]Aureus 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Yep.

Biden isn't seen as far-left by most Americans. Many even see him as a moderate. If he wins, the takeaway will not be "the far-left won" but rather "a moderate won against the far-right".

The response by most Americans will be about the same as when Obama won.

Totally agree, and it's sad you're not getting more support.

The establishment (and many in America) will see a Biden victory as a win for progressivism. Progressives will only capitalize on that, they won't back down. If people are submissive enough to see the devastation and censorship of the last few months and still vote for a Democrat, why would Democrats just stop pushing for more power?

Humanities don't necessarily solve social retardation though. I aced English, Psychology, and History classes through high school and college, but it didn't help my social life at all. Maybe communications is different, I've never taken a class like that.

You know what would help? Some kind of mandatory drama or public speaking class. That's what schools are missing.

Liberals who dislike Biden might vote for Kanye instead as a protest vote. However, Kanye has made positive statements towards Trump in the past, so it's possible that black Trump supporters could switch to Kanye.
