Maybe they shouldn't, maybe they're remnants of planetary formation and impactors/collisions - but most probably they're just a normal consequence/evidence of plate tectonics. Why something which already floated at the Earth surface should consistently sink into it in such a strange way? Way more probable scenario is, such a lightweight mass will still float beneath the surface of litospheric plate and gradually disintegrate there. See also:
