There's some censorship going on in the newly popular feminist subs and it needs to be openly addressed. by [deleted] in SaidIt

whatever happened to "if you don't like something don't look at it"?

It's still alive and well. If you don't like a comment someone made on /s/GenderCritical, hide it and move on. If the sub is on /s/all, the sub is not a safe space, and exists for all users on Saidit. If that's not what the users of /s/GenderCritical want, all you have to do is remove yourselves from /s/all, and you can be as exclusive as you like.

Saidit was created to combat exclusion and censorship. You came here for that very acceptance of diverse viewpoints, so that's what you're getting. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

Subs are allowed to limit open discussion as long as they remove themselves from /s/all, which GC has done. I think this is a reasonable trade-off, since any post you find on the frontpage will be open to all points of view.

In a vacuum, I'd say you're right, but the way Reddit and other private platforms have been treating unpopular speech for the past decade or so is representative of a troubling cultural shift in the mainstream that is definitely worth talking about just as much as joblessness and the general economic downturn.

Full disclosure, I'm not a superstraighter, but I am enjoying the shit they're stirring up.

For me it was deleting my comments with Automoderator and not notifying me about it. I kept having to open my own comments in private windows just to make sure they weren't being deleted.

Then, when they are deleted, you have to spend a half hour playing whack-a-mole with the Automod trying to figure out what about your comment was triggering it.

That and powermods banning any comments contributing to discussion that happen to go against the mods' narrative, leaving the majority of subs as nothing more than huge circlejerking echo chambers.

If you want Saidit to be a balanced place with free discussion from all directions, please post yourselves, and comment on extremist posts pointing out their flaws so that newcomers to Saidit know that we want open dialogue and don't brook propaganda.

[–]rdh2121 10 insightful - 2 fun10 insightful - 1 fun11 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Posts like "FUCK MEN FUCK MEN FUCK MEN YALL EAT A DICK" should absolutely be allowed, especially on a sub like /s/pinkpillfeminism, but if the comments removed are in good faith and are high on the PoD, then the admins should definitely look into the mod's behavior.

Admins, is there any way for users to see what the content of the removed comments was? Do you think all of the removed comments constitute comments that should have been removed?

Edit: And no sooner have I defended them here than I've been banned from there as well. /u/d3rr, /u/magnora7, are you looking into these bans? My comment probably deserved to be deleted, but I don't think I deserve to be censored from that community permanently without warning. Any thoughts on what's happening, and whether my ban can be overturned, would be appreciated.

Be the change you want to see. You can't be silenced here for your disagreement, so please post the type of content you'd like to see, especially on places like /s/politics! I've been trying to go through all of the blatantly biased posts there and countering the misinformation whenever I have the time, but more people need to make an effort to bring some nuance to Saidit.

The worst posts usually only come from a handful of posters, so it would be pretty easy to counter with actual good content with a bit of effort.

Who said this?

...the admins did. It's in the rules for moderators. Rules 4a and 4b.

Do you realize how many subs you could ban out of the feed by that logic? All subs that have a set of rules could technically be construed as banning free speech.

Practically none, as long as they allow disagreement, which they almost universally do? You're clearly on the wrong site here. I recommend Reddit for all your censorship needs.

[–]rdh2121[S] 7 insightful - 2 fun7 insightful - 1 fun8 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Absolutely, trolling is a problem on subs like GC, but moderators are allowed to remove comments low on the pyramid, and that's not a violation of Saidit's rules.

The problem is that GC also doesn't allow good faith disagreement or debate, which directly goes against the rules of Saidit, and therefore can't be allowed on the public /s/all page, and I think that should hold for New as well.

They're not allowed because their censorship is antithetical to the anti-censorship community we're trying to build here. The trade-off is that you can have your echo chamber, but you're not allowed to advertise it on /s/all.

How about this? If you see a comment you don't like, just ignore it, and then you won't be advocating for censorship like you're currently doing.

You can't just leave us alone to say what we want within our private space.

Because it's not a private space. It's a public space, by the design of this website that you've agreed to use of your own free will, and you will follow its rules, including the rule that if you're a useless circlejerk of censorship, you have to publicly state it.

Your beliefs are not PRO free speech, your beliefs are ANTI free speech. You don't like what's being said, so you want to shut it down. Instead of ignoring comments you don't like, you advocate for literal censorship, and then act like that's somehow exercising your right to free speech? Jesus, the mental gymnastics.

Luckily, the creators of this site don't share your delusions, and actual free speech advocates will always be here to report your censorship and lack of respect for the rules of this website.

In fact, I've just reported your pro-censorship sub again, just for the hell of it. I'm sure the admins will get around to forcing you to explicitly state your anti-free speech position on your sidebar soon enough.

The irony of you railing against "MSM propaganda" and then citing them instead of citing the actual science is absolutely hilarious, and incredibly telling. Then again, presciently, I did note that we both already know the science doesn't actually matter to you.

Even so, here you go - I've done your homework for you:
An evidence review of face masks against COVID-19. "The preponderance of evidence indicates that mask wearing reduces transmissibility per contact"

The physiological effects of face masks during exercise. "Heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and time to exhaustion did not differ significantly."

Effectiveness of Government Policies in Response to the COVID-19 Outbreak. "Using daily data for 32 countries and relying on the stringency of the conducted policies, we find that the greater the strength of government interventions at an early stage, the more effective these are in slowing down or reversing the growth rate of deaths."

Also, from here, showing how many more lives could have been saved in Sweden, tellingly, "Yet the size of the lockdown effect suggests that there is a non-trivial infection externality – people fail to internalise the costs they impose on others as they become infectious and, hence, voluntary social restraint fails to deliver the same extent of social distancing that we observe for the lockdown scenario."

They're talking about you, by the way. You're the reason lockdowns have to be mandatory, and are are less effective than they should be. "Selfish and ignorant indeed."

  1. Posts like that are definitely not the majority of posts on /s/pinkpillfeminism, so it likely isn't analogous to the subs you're talking about.

  2. It seems to me that as long as subs that do act like that allow dissenting voices in the comments, they should be allowed to stay anyway. Were the subs you're talking about removed for not allowing dissent?

In fact your encouraging saidit to pick and choose who shows up in a feed which is a form of censorship. You're the one being censorious.

All you gotta do to be on /s/all is not censor your sub. That's literally it. You're clearly on the wrong site here. I recommend Reddit for all your censorship needs.

I think Sparknotes is fine, for the most part, and you just had a terrible teacher.

New CDC Mask Study Finds "No Significant Reduction In Transmission" When Wearing A Mask by Tom_Bombadil in Coronavirus

[–]rdh2121 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

The mask charade is a PsyOp to frighten people.

Nope, it's not. It's a good faith effort to reduce transmission, and hasn't yet been disproved by studies. It's a perfectly reasonable step.

Masks can prevent bacterial transmission, but viruses are many orders of magnitude smaller in size.

It's still a more than reasonable precaution, and again, Coronavirus hasn't been shown to spread through masks.

It's part of the scamdemic hoax.

Lol.

In the first week since its anti-crime units dedicated to rooting out illegal guns were disbanded, New York City suffered a 358% surge in shootings. by Chipit in news

So... no evidence whatsoever. Why am I not surprised?

Let's see what makes more sense:
1. criminals are spending all of their time closely following the status of random government agencies so that they can all get together and agree to start shooting people after one small agency is disbanded
OR
2. There have been high-profile, high-tension protests going on for weeks, so violence has been higher recently.

I wonder what would happen if we compare the shootings this week with the shooting numbers earlier this month, instead of with shooting numbers from last year. Source

How about that! 40 shootings per week for the first three weeks of this month.

[–]rdh2121 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I'm not calling you a liar; I'm saying that even if you're telling the truth, in absence of evidence of significant voter fraud, what happened to you in no way justifies this legislation. Also, I'm still waiting on that scholarly source.

Campaigning at the polls and vote buying are already illegal - the only reason to prevent handing out water is to further disincentivize people from standing in line for hours after you've already ensured that a) there's only one place to vote in huge urban Atlanta districts with hundreds of thousands of people b) there are no ballot drop-off boxes to alleviate the ridiculous volume, c) there are no absentee ballots to alleviate the volume, and d) there's no Sunday voting to alleviate the volume.

None of these are warranted, of course, and in comparison, giving out water hardly warrants fearmongering about voter intimidation, unless, y'know, that's not really why you're fearmongering about "voter intimidation". I've never found water to be that scary, myself.

It has nothing to do with being physically or mentally fit, and everything to do with systematically reducing access to voting in the most populous Georgia districts, which are all overwhelmingly black.

And, this is all beside the point anyway, since, once again, all available evidence unanimously points towards the fact that US elections are already among the most secure in the world. These measures will have zero effect on voter fraud (since, again, it's already effectively nonexistent), which makes me wonder why all of the Republican states would suddenly be so intent on forcing these bills through their legislatures after enormous losses in the presidency and Congress.

[–]rdh2121 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Anecdotes aren't data. If you have a reputable scholarly source that shows that voter fraud is a significant enough problem to be worth denying water to people waiting in line to vote (not to mention the whole "disenfranchising millions of voters" thing), I'd like to see it.

Everything in this law is designed to make voting orders of magnitude harder for minorities that overwhelmingly vote Democrat, and to act otherwise is transparently disingenuous, especially when all available evidence unanimously points towards the fact that US elections are already among the most secure in the world.

It's better than writing up a list of sourceless conspiracy Youtube video-approved talking points.

it doesn't change the fact that four years ago you were probably frothing at the mouth about "Russian Collusion"

I was trying not to laugh at the Shillary voters I was watching the election with who were literally crying, which goes to show how little you know about me. I had faith in our elections then, and I still do now, especially since in neither case was there any evidence of fraud.

It is telling that you are so eager to believe the fraud in one case, but not the other though. Might wanna think on that for a bit.

It is precisely this kind of vacillation that has fostered peoples' skepticism.

And the fact that it's all baseless and being hyped solely for ragebait clicks is what makes it so sad on both sides.

People are ditching "authoritative" sources by the 10's of millions. You can't stop it. All you can do is repeat your approved talking points ad nauseum.

He says as he repeats his own approved talking points ad nauseam, only without any authoritative sources or scientific support.

You can hide in your house with your mask on while real men and women are making the changes they wish to see.

The only "change" you'll be making is the change in the quality of life your loved ones as you stubbornly and ignorantly kill them with easily preventable diseases.

It's not going away.

Your elderly and immunocompromised loved ones will though.

There is no point in arguing with you if you are just going to repeat oligarch-funded propaganda.

And there's no point in arguing with you if you're just going to repeat Youtube conspiracy nut-funded propanganda with absolutely zero basis in reality.

As opposed to your critical thinking skills of apparently not even reading the article at all? The entire point of the article is that yes, 1000 people died after taking the vaccine, but that there is no evidence tying those deaths to the vaccine.

The original "source" even included a post-vaccine car accident in their numbers for deaths due to COVID, so we see how much they care about good faith with their reporting numbers.

Face it - unanimous scientific consensus is that vaccines are perfectly safe, and that you have literally zero reason not to get one other than selfishness and willful ignorance.

Got news for ya, champ: watching nothing but poorly sourced and even more poorly produced Youtube videos on the frontpage of /s/conspiracy does not constitute "thinking for yourself".

They should be wearing that muzzle 24/7(proper breathing is overrated)

Study after study has shown that masks in no way impair gas exchange or proper lung function, even with high levels of athletic activity, and that they demonstrably reduce COVID transmission, but we both already know that the science doesn't matter to you. Once again, your conspiracy Youtubers aren't "free thinkers" - they're just exacerbating the culture of willful ignorance and misinformation that's so ubiquitous on places like SaidIt these days, and unfortunately you're not enough of a free thinker to do your own (actual) research.

a vaccine that isn't really a vaccine

Is it a preparation that causes your body to produce antibodies against future infection? It's a vaccine. A vaccine based on tech that also seems likely to provide further benefits against cancer in the near future, so the more research seen in that area, the better.

a virus with a 99.6% recovery rate

Thanks to lockdowns demonstrably slowing the rate of infection, increased availability of specialized medical equipment despite the best efforts of the prior administration to kill as many people as it could, and the countless hours of work in hazard conditions by the medical professionals that you're disgracing with your antivaxxer bullshit.

Selfish and ignorant indeed.

You've done an excellent job demonstrating that you belong in this category as well. Try being an actual free thinker, for once. Oh, and don't forget to wear a mask and get vaccinated - it saves lives.

BREAKING: DOJ, DHS Election Interference Assessment: There Was UNPRECEDENTED INTERFERENCE EFFORTS IN THE 2020 ELECTION by NewsJunkie in news

Note that this report only claims that foreign governments tried to interfere with election results more than ever before, not that the results of the election were in any way in question or that there was any voter fraud.

In fact, they specifically went out of their way to deny these concerns:

We—the Department of Justice, including the FBI, and Department of Homeland Security, including CISA—have no evidence that any foreign government-affiliated actor prevented voting, changed votes, or disrupted the ability to tally votes or to transmit election results in a timely manner; altered any technical aspect of the voting process; or otherwise compromised the integrity of voter registration information of any ballots cast during 2020 federal elections.
