I said it before Douglas Murray articulated it: There is no LGBTQIA+ community. We don't have enough in common.

And I'm so tired of the "They're coming for you, too!" scare tactic. Funny how they weren't coming for us until all the TQ+ stuff blew up. Funny how they had kind of left us alone before TRAs provoked them. The real fear of TRAs is that the LGB will cut themselves loose from the sinking ship of the TQ+.

Dear HRC, GLAAD, et al.,

Thanks for your warning, a warning we wouldn't need if you hadn't been so completely tone-deaf and arrogant in pushing radical trans policies.

Remember when Elizabeth Birch was the head of HRC and kept trans demands off the table because she knew they would derail everything the LGB were fighting for? I do.

Thanks for taking 50 years of progress and fucking it all up by pushing trans kids and the new religion that is gender. Thanks for giving us all the bad publicity any minority could ever wish for.

Also how were transgender people persecuted, exactly? When was transition ever illegal? His only evidence seems to be that gays didn't center him enough.

And what "rights" is she still fighting for? The fact is that most of the political victories won by gays and lesbians directly or indirectly benefited trans people, too, like overturning sodomy laws (not mentioned here). And same-sex marriage meant that whatever your sex was, it no longer mattered. Oh, but we can't be given credit for that. We're just the mean, old oppressors who reduced her to robbing hotel safes to make a living.

But the whole thing is pretty much a vague fluff piece to create another trans Saint.

Who’s gonna let me own property?

Uh, maybe the county office of deeds and records?

And she acts like someone is going to come break down her door and arrest her at any moment, which is not going to happen.

Back in the 80s and 90s, I knew gay men who donated tens of thousands of dollars to keep the lights on in gay and lesbian and HIV/AIDS resource centers. None of them, as far as I know, are going around demanding credit for it. They didn't say a word about it then and never have.

What you have to realize at this point is that none of this rhetoric is rational. It's all intended to keep the forces riled up and stoke the fires of hysteria. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a very good way to respond to it. Because it's not rational, you can't reason with people in the grip of this mindset. What you can do is speak to people who have not yet fallen into the hysteria.

These posts also serve to distract from the stupid things that "we've" done like the wedding cake case. No one needed to bring a discrimination case against a religious baker who didn't want to bake a gay wedding cake. It was petty and vindictive. And it made us all look bad.

A discrimination test case like that should have been reserved for something serious, something most people could sympathize with, like something that threatened someone's housing, job, or medical care.

the lgbt community didn't act like they don't need to care about their public image anymore

This is what I don't get. Why, in the current climate, do you have people doing things like that basically-naked guy in bondage with a guy behind him with a whip in the bed of a pickup truck in the WeHo Pride Parade? Why do we have Rose Montoya flashing her tits at the White House? Why do they not understand that we live in a world where every photo or video can get spread around the world in an instant by people who don't like us? How have they become so arrogant and reckless? Is it the case that your temporary, cheap thrill is more important than our entire community's image?

Seems like "Pride" should be rebranded as "Hubris."

It's very easy to understand and can be explained in two words: Narcissistic Rage.

If you've never seen a pathological narcissist's fragile self-image threatened, count yourself lucky. An example would be the guy who kills his girlfriend because she was planning to leave him, and he's not the kind of person someone is allowed to leave.

an accurate prediction

It was accurate only in a general way. The specifics were all wrong, bordering on the unimaginable.

We've thoroughly discussed the fact that for many of us, the TQ+ stuff seemed to come out of nowhere. Prior to 2015, most everyone I knew was focused on same-sex marriage and maybe protection in terms of housing and job discrimination for LGB people. If you had told me in 2013 that in 2023 we'd be in the midst of an uproar about putting kids on puberty blockers, teaching kids gender identity theory, males competing against females in sports, and non-binary identities, I would have thought you were crazy.

What the right said was that gay marriage was going to lead to efforts to legalize incest, polygamous marriage, and bestiality. That's not where we've ended up. I think it's unfair to give conservatives credit for being right when, in fact, they predicted things that didn't happen and failed to predict those who did.

Pretty much the only people who foresaw our current problems were the gender critical feminists. They were right.

I went to a large high school in the 1980s. I'd go so far as to say the whole concept didn't exist. Gay people, yes, but not trans. The word 'transgender' wasn't even in use yet. Graduated college in 1990 from a highly-ranked very liberal university, and I never heard the topic mentioned once during my college career, much less knew anyone. In the 1990s, I went to grad school and knew one trans person at that university, but that was it. I taught until 2010 and never had a single trans-identified student in any of my classes, and for several years, I taught 120 students per semester. With some rough math, I taught over 2,400 students.

All this exploded post-2010.

Going back to my college days and my subsequent time teaching in academia, there is a long history of a certain subset of women, for example, taking a Women's Studies class and declaring themselves bisexual or lesbian for a while, then, without fanfare, returning to dating men. With the advent of LGBTQIA+ as a club so many now seem to want to join, it's not inconceivable that some of these women first claim to be lesbians. Then, once they switch to claiming to be trans, they can now admit to being attracted to men again while still retaining their status as LGBTQIA+.

As a former teacher, I offer this observation: People like freedom, but only to a certain point. People also, generally speaking, want to fit in. They like to be told what's expected of them and to be rewarded for delivering it.

For years, we tried to attack gender roles, but then, seemingly almost overnight, they came back with a vengeance. I can't help but think that it's because conforming to an established gender role gives some sense of stability to people who are looking for some kind of stable reference point for their identity. And I think part of that has to do with the declining role of traditional religion. Gender has become a kind of neo-religion. Compare it to people becoming "born again."

I'm in my 50s, and I'm constantly struck by how quickly gender has exploded as an identity category since 2010. I used to teach university classes, and in 20 years of teaching, I never had a single trans-identified student. Yes, I had known a few transgender people -- very few -- but it was still very rare. And whatever "transgender" is, I still think it's not well-understood.

What I do think is that the phenomenon seems to express some need for identity categories on the part of younger people. They seem to be looking for some points of stable reference in our culture, and gender appears to have been offered to them as an option. It reminds me to some degree of people I've encountered who were deeply into astrology or some other kind of trendy identity, one difference being that astrology hasn't been taken this seriously for centuries.

That sub has two trans mods and one mod that's been suspended (probably LGB). It's a good object lesson in the fact that the one thing trans activists hate more than anything else is being told, "No." The idea that any space is not for them drives them insane with rage and the urge to retaliate. I presume we've all heard of the women's groups deliberately disrupted by trans women.

This has proved a very interesting discussion thread. Seems more and more gay men are getting that this drop in approval has come via the pursuit of TQ+ demands.

I would be interested to understand the motivations of the ones righteously defending the TQ+, but they are probably not self-aware enough to analyze why they take that position. All they seem to do is repeat the same slogans over and over. You know, anyone who thinks differently is a stooge/pawn for the far-right. We're brainwashed, etc...

And they keep trashing the AGB subreddit when, in fact, the reason those opinions can't be expressed on other LGBTQ+ subs is that the mods ban anyone who expresses them, creating an artificial perception of consensus. It's an artificial sense of unity created by silencing dissent.

If you're a DEI professional, there's no reason to try to reduce racial tensions since that would eliminate the need for your job. It's generally a mistake to allow a profession to proliferate that depends on the existence of an ongoing problem that they are employed to "solve." If they solve it, they put themselves out of business. Much better to make it worse.

I think 'manifesto' is a bit of an exaggeration. This is just a spew of animosities. There's no attempt to justify any of it in terms of some larger cause, which is what someone might attempt in a manifesto. She sounds to me like someone who hated the world and her insignificance in it and wanted to kill some people to spread her own misery around. This is what it's like inside the mind of a frustrated narcissist.

One of our problems is our era's misplaced confidence in the idea that we're so enlightened that we're somehow beyond being caught up in magical/superstitious thinking. The rise of gender identity dogma shows just how wrong that idea is. Human beings are still vulnerable to believing all sorts of crazy shit if it's packaged in the right way.
