The censorship is on another level but most people don’t see it. The bots and the unwavering control of the narrative are what are literally strangling the site right now. It’s just not fun.

People go online for information. You can see how reddit in its newest layout is trying to look more like a news site. People go to forum sites to express themselves and find community. Every time someone gets told to sit down and shut up, they move a little further away.

There’s already an entire religion for that. It’s called the society of friends. To the society of friends, there is literally never a time when violence is the right thing to do. During most times that the US had a draft, being a Quaker was the only sure way to obtain consciencious objector status.

When a settlement of Quakers heard that there was a Native American tribe heading to slaughter them for something they hadn’t done in a case of mistaken identity, the Quakers all gathered to sit silently to pray, as is their typical form of worship.

The natives entered the meeting house where the Quakers were gathered. Seeing them sitting silently and non-reactive, the natives knew they had the wrong group and left.

Quakers are called such because in their silent meetings for worship, those who go into the most deeply meditative state can be known to quake slightly. In practices such as yoga, this type of shaking is known to release tensions, anger, grief, and other unexpressed or bottled up feelings.

Quaker quaking is not to be confused with the shaking of Shakers. Shakers shook purposefully to do the same thing but were more demonstrative in their shaking as it came from a purposeful state and not a meditative one. Also, the Skakers refused to procreate so they all died out. But they did make really great furniture, which is what they’re most known for historically.

There’s actual, MASSIVE historical evidence that China discovered America in 1421. The book is called 1421: The Year China Discovered America by Gavin Menzies.

A) It’s ludicrously inane to perms ban someone simply for pointing out that there’s a book on a topic and

B) It shows how deeply toxic the entitled group think is there that everyone must bow to the POV of the mods. It’s at once immature and evil.

I recently heard a story from a poker player. He had about $30 in chips stolen from him by the player next to him. He called the Floorman and demanded they look at the tape. The Floorman just gave him the money in dispute. He said it wasn't worth his time to go to the tape.

Six years ago, I was assaulted outside a bar. My attorney sent a letter within two weeks demanding the preservation of any CCTV footage. It was preserved and it was gruesome. I'm not certain how much it contributed to the settlement of my case but it was there and provided upon legal demand.

I would say corporate studies are the number one issue, certainly. And then the way media reports “findings” spoon fed as fact without communicating a real understanding of underlying findings. Which brings us of course to online shilling.

Since the advent of the internet, it’s become far more popular to be scientific/atheist and there’s no doubt in my mind that it’s the same — and as potentially dangerous — as any other religion.

The issue, though, that really gets after me the most is the use of statistical analysis and its conflation with the scientific method. Stats are big these days but they remain a soft correlation and not a even scientifically “proven” causation. They’re great for predicting baseball — and while correlation can be a great guide — it’s not causative science. There’s a reason investment firms have to tell you past performance is not indicative of future results.

It’s much cheaper to do a “study” using broad statistical analysis of many other studies and it’s also easier to manipulate the data — just use studies that already support your conclusion and discount those that don’t.

Famously, studies have shown that lunch meats lead to increased heart disease/cancer/terrible things. This is a finding that has stuck with our collective consciousness very well because it jives with what makes sense to us (and in all likelyhood, it is true that they aren’t the healthiest thing in the world).

Yet, this remains a soft statistical analysis of self-reported data. And even then, the consumption of lunch meats is linked with a barely statistically significant difference. There were no double blind tests. There were no controls for what other food products were part of various lunch meat consumers’ diets. There was no finding on how much or how little might be safe. There was no differentiation between types of lunch meats. Prosciutto makers were especially miffed as the process for making prosciutto differs markedly from say bologna. Just, “consumption of lunch meats linked to increased health risks.”

It was just this type of study that led to the California law in the 1980’s that is the reason why all wine bottles today must say “Contains Sulfites.” To this day, there is still zero actual genuine scientific evidence that says to what degree and amounts sulfites in wine might cause any damage to humans whatsoever.

[–]sodasplash 4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 0 fun5 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

In 1923, Frederick Banting, Charles Best, and James Collip sold the patent for insulin to the University of Toronto for $1 each because they believed such an essential medicine should be available to everyone who needed it.

The original patents for the insulin molecule have long since expired, but patents on parts of the production process — a strategy that has been famously used (and arguably abused) by drug companies — remain because pharmaceutical companies keep tweaking how they make it. Most insulins sold today are synthetic analogs that have been adjusted to last longer or act faster, which is one reason pharmaceutical companies give for why the cost of insulin has skyrocketed. These changes have prevented generic drug manufacturers from entering the market.

I don’t think it’s delusional, I just think there’s no reason to want that. Even “no agenda” is an agenda to someone. My go-to’s tend to be Fox News, RT, and Al Jazeera, although I don’t think Al Jazeera is what it used to be.

I want to hear a variety of perspectives and know what they are. Just the fact of what some consider news is an agenda. If I know what different people’s agendas are then I can differentiate and form my own opinion. Unlike a lot of people it seems like these days, I don’t need other people to agree with me. My perspective is typically so much more nuanced, that it’s not often I’m going to find many people who agree with me anyway. Certainly not the ones spouting the same daily talking points on Facebook.

The only ones I won’t listen to are NPR, CNN, MSNBC, and the British agencies because they are just so smarmy and trying to shove an agenda. I guess their agenda hits a little too close to home for me. Fox News and RT, their agendas are so transparent, it’s just laughable.

But these days, I really only follow financial news because I don’t feel like the other crap really matters to me.

Exceptionally apt comment. I would also add medical. We are told to not think for ourselves but trust learned individuals. And yet, especially when it comes to something like our own physical well being, if you go to for a second opinion, there's an 80% chance that the second opinion will be entirely the opposite of the first opinion.

This is actually true in many walks of life. Yet so few people realize this because they barely have "time" to get a well informed first opinion.

Obviously this type of thing is going to continue to happen. And given the nature of the way this was uncovered, it's likely happened many times previously.

I doubt it would ever come to pass but what we need is a law that specifically parses out information incidentally uncovered under such demands and allows individuals to deny the use of such incidentally uncovered information in further proceedings.

Certainly, we all believe "the gubmint" is out to just collect as much info as possible for future use. And obviously it's also being claimed that if these scopes are being illegally sold to known terrorist organizations, it's "all hands on deck."

Both are not with validity. Now obviously, such fish finding missions do lead to uncovering other illegal activity -- which findings, have in the past, often been deemed inadmissible based on suspicious discovery by law enforcement.

While we all hope that this demand fails and future such demands are also turned away, there "oughta be a law" against use of evidence "incidentally" dragnetted.

It's just like fishermen are allowed to use a dragnet but they have to ensure that they are throwing back the non-targeted fish. It's the Dolphin Safe Tuna of law enforcement information gathering.

I was grabbing a quick bight at my favorite taco stand yesterday and I actually overheard three Asian people talking about pretty much exactly this.

It does seem a little intense that those random not exactly high paid, under a lot of stress border guards have so much sway and phone searches at travel points need significantly tight controls. But I’m also not against a bit of a clampdown. People can be a tad laissez fairy and entitled when they travel.

So there were three Asians sitting by me. I’m going to guess they were Korean because that’s where one of them seemed to indicate they were from. Two were a couple who had been traveling together so it’s possible the third was a local, although I got the impression they were all travelers.

The one asked the couple how Chicago was and the guy said, “It all went as planned but you need some drama. When we flew into LA, they asked grilled us on all sorts of questions.”

The woman chimes in, “I had just written on the form for destination LA and the he asks, ‘what city is this?’” Then the guy also mentions they had been to Shanghai and they got ask questions about that.

None of that exchange seems terribly out of line with my own experience in Europe. But in just the same way as my traveling in Europe showed me...

This whole process of last minute boarder and travel checks seems very WWII levels of archaic to me. Why is this “good old fashioned police work,” being conducted by these gruff dudes at the check stand? Traveling is stressful enough.

Why aren’t these tasks performed at the Visa issuing level? It seems like a good old mission creep power grab to me where existing departments just try to get more and more power for themselves while no one has their eye on the overall system.

All I know is, this thing with civil rights disappearing at the boarder has got to go. It’s not conducive to an open, growing economy and flourishing society.

At the same time, I’m open to certain people from certain countries being more highly scrutinized. It’s a small percentage, sure, but it’s also a sad fact that we have allies and enemies and there are Chinese business interests actively attempting to steal tech secrets and other people in other parts of the world who mean us harm.

Yes, China with the one child policy has always been the big news story on this topic. But too many males and not enough females has long been one of the key factors in both Pakistan and India’s internal (and sometimes external) strife.

I don’t think he really needed to be suicided. Not to be crass but the guy never really faced any major obstacles in his life before.

He was an idealist and was able to say and accomplish whatever he wanted in life. Betrayed by MIT, faced with his own failure, and facing 35 years in prison (a lifetime to any 20 something or to anyone really), there was no way he was not completely despondent. But at a minimum, yes, he was very much pushed to this — by a lot of people.

But this is exactly why the state runs up the years and the press always publishes big numbers. “Facing” 35 years isn’t really even that much. The prosecutorial side of the criminal justice system is built on intimidation. People regularly “face” massive years when first charged and reported. Rarely do any but the most heinous of crimes see a sentence even close to their initial charges, especially at the federal level.

If he’d had a good lawyer and pled, or had this gone to trial, the tide could have been turned. For him to have seen five years would have been extreme.

Look up the case of Poker Princess Molly Bloom for one great example of someone who fought the Feds and essentially won. She was “facing” much more than Aaron, I’m fairly certain and got 6 months and most of her other demands met.

My take on these online petitions is that they’re just for industry shills. So you wanna start a covertly industry-backed autism awareness campaign? You make a petition that says “Autism is bad mmmmkay.” And then you get your lobbyist a meeting with an advisor to the director of health and human services and an assistant advisor the President and your lobbyist says to them, “Look guys, here’s a ‘grass roots’ campaign that agrees with everything I just said.”

Then “magically” the President cites a “grass roots” “citizen’s campaign” when he signs off on some major industry payout. The gravy train is too long to believe in conspiracy theories when basic principles of corruption will do.

I’ve read a few of those arguments and they all seem rather strained and under the surface to boil down to “we don’t really know.” The more widely acknowledged points that “strangely accurate pre-Columbian maps of parts of the Atlantic exist, as well as the biological evidence of pre-Columbian Old and New World contacts” seem like especially strong points to hang one’s hat on, given that the Western world cares much more for history than China.

I’ll have to try 1434: The Year a Magnificent Chinese Fleet Sailed to Italy and Ignited the Renaissance by Menzies next.

This sort of idea that we should simply conclude on the side of “500 years of (Western) history” in the face of newer evidence when the West never has had (and still doesn’t have) access to much of what input China might offer on the subject is misplaced to me. But I’ve always argued against the acceptance of a single narrative, which happens to be your, my, and most people’s major issue with what reddit has become today.

The cuntiest of the feminists immediately piped up, “Us Americans don’t talk about that at the dinner table.” The French were clearly offended.
