At the risk of going off on a tangent, the claim itself is pretty meaningless because some people will tape up a fallen light fixture with duct tape and call that a home repair. The spectrum in the quality and complexity of maintenance that people do is insanely wide, yet they all claim they can do repairs.

Men are biologically programmed to be curious about systems and that means that they go through their entire life analyzing how things work. That make them better at fixing things. Far more men will completely tear apart an appliance like a washer to save money on repairs than women.

I think that perception is caused by a misunderstanding about what child geniuses are and how IQ is measured in children. His IQ is genius level for a child but not for an adult. People simply expect that if the child had accelerated development so far they will continue to have extraordinary development into adulthood and become genius adults.
