Extreme soft and sensitive is the point too.

It's one thing to go off on a profanity laces tyrade. It's another to take the work and say "well it's not very good, the plot moves too fast, the characters aren't interesting, it's too derivative of XYZ" all opinions of course but if you're going to cry about that then how the hell you expect to improve? People are just going to stop talking to you. It just shifts the goal posts ever farther towards normal criticism having the same impact on these people as actual verbal abuse.

With the gender stuff as well. Basic questions, what is a woman? How can you be non-binary when there's no objective metric to determine that? Basic questions kind of make the whole thing fall apart because there aren't good answers but instead of reevaluating their beliefs they just take it as a personal attack.

South Korea declares martial law by American_Muskrat in news

I'm not an expert on Korean politics and unfortunately my knowledge of Korean is nearly non-existent so I can't read primary sources. But I think it is basically right to describe him as a right wing anti-communist president. In the context of Korean politics though I think that means more "anti-north" than anything. But I don't think there's really any "pro-north" positions truly. It's more a case of how strict they want to handle the North. Either hardine aggressive stance or more conciliatory stance. It also seems that people who want to adopt a more friendly and diplomatic stance towards the north are often accused of being communists. The political discourse is very heated it seems.

Korea is a very interesting country though despite how I think it's basically two dysfunctional societies, one capitalist, one communist, that you can compare if you want. South is obviously the better place to live all things considered but the propaganda war definitely tends to color things a certain way. North Korea for example does seem like it's definitely a communist shithole but I think the western ideal of it tends to be greatly exaggerated. There's people going there and living there, some degree of industry, and some countries have diplomatic relations with them. It's not totally cut off from the world but western media tends to ignore this.(probably because they won't allow journalists).

The south on the other hand is flashy and quite a high standard of living, with the highest suicide rate and lowest birth rates in the 1st world. Crazy feminists. Crazy anti-feminists. Crazy pseudo Christian cults. American style mega churches. It's a weird place. Also the fried chicken is better than the US. And they drink more than the Irish.

Korea is like the most extreme country on the planet I think. That probably best describes my kinda racist opinion I've picked up over the years that the Koreans are crazy. I like them, they're friendly. But they're fucking wild and go balls to the wall with whatever they do. Capitalism. Communism. Christianity. Gaming. Drinking. It's like moderation as a concept is non-existent.

Duran: Russian economy and Gazprombank by penelopepnortney in WayOfTheBern

[–]penelopepnortney[S,M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Alexander starts by explaining why he thinks the dollar got stronger following Trump's election: Aside from his talk of tariffs, etc., what's probably been happening is a massive outflow of funds from Europe into the US. This is because there's a political crisis in Germany with one brewing in France as the Germans have been talking about doing away with their debt brake. Germany has been the anchor for the euro so this likely has bond markets and financial investors worried about Germany's long-term financial position; by contrast, the US looks to have a more solid economy and the influx of these investments pushed the value of the dollar up relative to other currencies.

We have this discussion about the ruble every year around this time because it always weakens in late autumn and early winter; this is a structural issue. First because we're moving toward a new year and the holidays and this is the biggest shopping season in Russia as in most countries. As a result, there's usually a rush of imports into Russia that have to be paid for with foreign currencies and that causes the ruble to decline. Russians have experienced lots of wage growth so they have a lot of money to spend.

Another and more important reason is that Russian corporates tend to pay off their loans toward the end of the year. So if they've borrowed in foreign currencies, as some still do, they have to convert rubles into those foreign currencies to pay off the loan. The ruble historically strengthens in January when Russian corporates pay their first tranche of corporate taxes to the Russian government, meaning they convert any foreign currency they have to rubles.

I think the fall we've seen over the last few days is due to the sanctions put on Gazprombank because it was the only Russian bank that was still allowed to operate within the SWIFT system. It was through Gazprombank that Western buyers of Russian oil and gas products, including Turkey, settled their payments. So with Gazprombank now out of the Western financial system, there's less ability for Westerners to buy Russian oil and gas, which has put further downward pressure on the ruble. Erdogan is complaining about this, asking for an exemption.

The important thing to remember is that it doesn't matter. Russia is running a strong trade surplus: because of the fall in the price of the ruble, Russian exports have become even more competitive. Their growing trade surplus looks like it will translate into a budget surplus. Just a few weeks ago the finance minister was talking about a budget deficit of around 1% of GDP which is quite low but it looks like that might turn into a surplus.

There's very little external debt so we're not looking at this bleeding through into the banking system as we've seen with previous ruble crises like the famous one in 1998; in 1998 Russian banks had lots of liabilities in Western currencies that they couldn't meet because the ruble fell, which caused a general collapse of the banking system. There's nothing like that now, the Russian banking system is very healthy.

This is not going to have a big effect on Russia's external trade. 82% of their exports and 78% of their imports are paid in currencies other than the dollar like RMB, the ruble, etc. So it's not going to have a significant effect on the Russian economy overall; it will cause inflation to be a little higher which does concern the central bank.

As we've discussed in previous programs, Russia does have a problem of their economy overheating. The central bank has raised rates to counter this but data shows it's still growing faster than they would like because it leads to inflation. Right now their inflation rate is 8-9% of GDP which is not that high historically, but if it starts inching into the double digits the central bank and the government as a whole will take more radical action.

Russian inflation figures are very accurate - even the Financial Times admitted in years past that they're the most advanced collectors of inflation statistics in the world. You can't say the same about the West. Here it's widely acknowledged even among mainstream economists and commentators that inflation is being consistently understated.

The Gazprombank sanctions in the short-term will provide a talking point for the Biden administration but in the medium- to long-term it's going to cause increasing problems in the West.

Gazprombank was previously exempted from the sanctions and allowed to continue in the SWIFT system because the US wanted a mechanism of control over the international energy markets, something that was very important to the Biden administration before the election. Now that Trump has won, it will be his problem.

The sanctions also make it difficult for Europe to continue buying Russian LNG; they've been buying more LNG from Russia than from the US because it's cheaper so this will add to the rising prices that Europe is paying for energy. Eventually Russian LNG will probably start displacing LNG from the US and Qatar, etc. in places like China and India. The market will find some kind of stability but at higher cost because every sanction of this kind increases the complexity of the general trade in energy and leaves the price of energy structurally higher than it would otherwise be.

The ones getting crushed by all this are the Europeans and you're not hearing a squeak from their leaders.

South Korea declares martial law by American_Muskrat in news

[–]Nonbinaryandroid 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

South Korea has long had a, let's call it a chaotic political climate. Lots of corruption.

In the west you're going to be getting most of the news through a propagandistic lense. South is the US ally and a stable healthy democracy, North is a Communist shithole, true to some extent but like anything a gross oversimplification.

Since North and South Koreans are all Koreans it's not enough to say that communism is the only reason why North Korea is an insane dystopia. Other communist countries around the world have similar problems but are nowhere near North Korea. Likewise South Korea being capitalist isn't enough to describe its problems since other capitalist countries have similar problems but not quite to the same extent.

What North and South Korea do share are the same cultural roots. So it's not surprising that the political situations in both countries are dysfunctional. They share the same root culture.

There was a time not so long ago that South Korea was an impoverished dictatorship and the North was seen as an attractive destination for defection. That situatuon has changed a lot as capitalism did allow for Korea to have it's economic miracle leaving the North behind especially after the collapse of the Soviet union. However the political situatuon in South Korea has always been quite chaotic and you don't get much of it in the western news cycle, usually Korea only pops up when the North does something stupid.

At the moment it appears that the current president was going to be impeached and jailed for a reason I don't fully understand, and that he tried to declare martial law to prevent that procedure and pull off a de facto coup. It seems at the moment this strategy has failed spectacularly.

It is safe to assume both countries have spies in the other and some degree of "infiltration" if it can be called that but I don't think it is significant. I think the president is likely using that to call upon the fear of the North to rally supporters.

I've become more racist as I've gotten older and learned more about Korea as I'm convinced their culture North or South tends to produce a lot of crazy. Generally nice people most of the time, good food, interesting history, but their societies are fucked.

The kind of extreme soft & sensitive language required whenever talking around gender specials frequently reminds me of class critiques which, even by the time I was in college, were pretty soft. There were stories of older instructors throwing bad work out windows and making students cry, but that pretty much ended by our day. The good/poor quality argument in the arts was lost decades ago in a similar manner to how the sex binary was blurred.

I think generally what happens is that creative types are more tolerant of certain kinds of weirdness than the rest of the planet. Especially in college. The problems come about when you get these fully disconnected from reality coupled with the unfortunate tendency of many creative types to be unable to handle criticism constructively.

I've made the argument a few times in groups that I've been in that while I personally don't really give a rats ass if you want to come into work dressed like a drag queen, and in fact honestly I appreciate the entertainment, it gives off an air of unprofessionalism that will be viewed negatively in most public facing rolls. Yes the verbal criticism you are getting is mostly coming from people who are "triggered" and bigoted to some degree but the damning problem isn't them it's the people that see it and are smart enough not to say anything just writing us off entirely, opportunities are lost. I might get shit on for mentioning this, but I'm not making the rules by which society operates I just understand that if you want to break them you have to accept the consequences.

Basically I think a loud minority just ends up controlling the social dynamic. In any situation it seems the most intolerant and loudest voices set the standards. Be that progressive or regressive. It's why people cringe at thought of Mohammed cartoons. Enough intolerant people out there willing to behead you over it. Why you don't say "hmm maybe having gay characters in this kid show isn't a good idea" enough crazies to brand you as a biggot and destroy your career convinces most to stay silent.

It's the "wrong side of history" argument. Yeah you say I'm on the wrong side of history but history isn't here yet. History is written by the victors. Trump one again does that mean he is on the right side of history.

It just seems obvious to me that if you are trying to market something, making a marketing campaign that targets some wildly small demographic at the risk of alienating your core market with some culture war bullshit is a losing proposition. It was the same with the Disney gay stuff. It doesn't matter if it's mostly tame and not controversial to you and your circle. You publish it, you lose loads of your potential market. And damage the brand. It's nothing new either seems nobody remembers the decades long boycott of Disney from the Baptists.

Researchers find DNA contamination in COVID-19 mRNA injections exceeding regulatory limits by over 300%, confirming findings from earlier studies by Kevin McKernan, Phillip Buckhaults, Brigitte König, David Speicher, and Didier Raoult.

Calls for an immediate global moratorium on COVID-19 mRNA injections continue to intensify. She closes her eyes as she says this. That is a body language tell that she knows what she is saying is bullshit. By closing her eyes she does not see her own lie therefore she has not told a lie. (At least in her mind) She also shakes a bit too as she is trying to metal strangle her co-host or at least the words coming from her co-host.

Co-host: "...Okay...repeatedly say your not going to and you do..".

So... a lie then.

Consider the ethical impacts of quantum technologies in defence — before it’s too late (PDF) Physics, as history taught us, can be dangerous. As quantum technology continues to progress (slowly), researchers and governments across the world are worried that it will be used for evil purposes. Why? And should we really be worried about quantum tech? The article advocates for an "anticipatory ethical governance approach" that includes six key principles: developing risk categorization models, countering authoritarian and unjust uses, ensuring justified and balanced securitization, fostering multilateral collaboration and oversight, prioritizing information security, and promoting societal benefits.

All right, so that some academics with new hobby ideas are fishing for DOD funding, got it... Or how else we should interpret the articles like this one? Just consider the ability to enforce such a consideration by parties well motivated into quantum technologies. See also:

Their own side is furious because they know how bad and hypocritical it makes them look. They backed themselves into a corner with prior rhetoric, Biden just took a shit and wiped his ass with their faces, and now they’re standing there with their shit stained faces and answering for Biden’s actions.
