We have the benefit of hindsight with old media. We get the sampled pick of the best of the best. Most of the crap is forgotten. There's more crap now than there was before. But that doesn't mean in 50 years our media era won't be remembered for the few gems.

Everyone tries to copy the successful show and you see it happen. Cartoons all try to copy family guy. Action movies all try to copy marvel. In the past everyone tried to copy star wars. Before that there was the great disaster movie tsunami of the 1970's of which we more or less only have the brilliant satire "Airplane" which has endured in the cultural consciousness. And even much of that the references are lost to the modern viewer. (Though most are timeless enough to be funny).

I think a lot of it has to do with being a blissfully ignorant kid. And I think a lot of the problems we see today is people grew up but remained blissfully ignorant.

There's loads of problems and frankly the old refrain reads true "there's nothing new under the sun" things change, the biggest recent development was social media, but that basically just exasperated social problems that already existed. Society just hasn't moved about to figure out how to deal with it yet. There's wars drugs corruption crime and it goes in cycles.

The epic cycle. The young men have passion, they go to war, they die, the survivors are strong but understand the folly of war, they build a peaceful world and they have the knowledge of the horror that man can inflict on man and have no desire to inflict that horror on others.

The next generation grows up in a wonderful era of peace and comfort, spared from the ravages of of war and the true depravities of human strife, but then just as assuredly as the older generation dies, they miss out on the hard earned wisdom about life and what really matters that comes to them only when they are sitting in a foxhole covered in shit and blood and death.

These people are smarter, they're more open minded, they have a creative spirit not crushed by the evils of the world, but they lack the perspective of time, they create a nicer world that is better than the ones their parents left them, but they fail to deal with the growing resentment of the youth, they lack the normal human experience, one of strife, and war, and they yearn for it just as a dog yearns to chase a squirrel. Eventually the older generation will allow for frivolous and pointless concerns to take the way of what really matters, whether that is one generation or two depends, usually the generation after the war understands at least on some level the horrors of it, but the last people who truly understand are dying now, Vietnam was perhaps one of the last truly terrible wars to hit the public consciousness at a scale large enough to make a difference, but even that effect is dwindling.

Another big war will happen as they always have and the cycle will repeat again. Humans will build something. Fight with other humans. Destroy what they build. And build again.

More or less. I remember Trump was very maligned by the religious voting bloc but not surprising there as they are essentially a form of progressive. Course once Trump was the front runner they did a 180 on him since it's him or her.

It's particularly funny, to see someone you know go from complaining at you for pointing out that Trump is likely to win the primary, whine and complain about how crass and ungodly he is, only to see them a few months later talking about how "God chose Donald Trump to be president" and complaining at you when you dare to even criticize his policies.

That's the real code Trump figured he's a sleazy salesman type but he's got the populist speaking points down pat, can placate the religious right with lip service while resonating with the regulars by making simplistic talking points. Really does understand the game of campaigning in the US. Course governing is a bit of a different animal.

The Trump years it was really annoying trying to talk about politics at all since it felt like you'd either end up with the Trump-phobic twitter stans screeching at the one end and the flag waving Jesus people on the other side make it impossible to give intelligent criticism of Trump.

The single issue voters are themselves insane of course. But you hit the nail on the head. Partisan concerns essentially dictate the acceptable positions to take on issues and if you are running as a republican you essentially must run with the most restrictive outlook on abortion possible to hope to claim victory and the opposite is true if you are a democrat. Try explaining to a heavily partisan person on the pro-life side that abortions in cases of miscarriage or for medical necessity such as preventing maternal death are absolutely morally defendable and they'll shriek at you can call you a baby killer. Go on the opposite side and mention that there are some pretty thorny ethical dilemmas with aborting "undesirables", as well as the pretty simple fact that a third trimester abortion is pretty much killing a fully formed baby no matter how you slice it and has its own ethical concerns, and they'll just as quickly throw you under the bus screaming and complaining about how you want to control women or be a Nazi or some shit.

The extremists essentially pull the party to the extremes of whatever the wedge issues are. Abortion, alphabet people. You name it. The nature of activist politics necessarily demands that progressives lead the charge but progressives themselves by the name always need to progress so they'll take the issues to the absolute brink of sanity for the sake of the cause.

I think everyone gets hung up on the idea of progressives vs regressives, right vs left and all that. But I think progressives exist on both sides of any issue really. It's just that there is no singular right path of history or development as many assume. The hardline right christian advocating for what is essentially a theocratic state is pursuing their own idea of "utopia" the same way a godless communist is pursuing theirs.

I was watching a show the other day and the tried and true amnesia plot line came into play and I sat there wondering, does this actually happen in real life?

Like I'm sitting there wondering what exactly the medical workings for amnesia are? It's technically both. The speed of light can be considered as the speed at which "shit happens" the speed of time if you will. Since we define time by the rate at which "shit happens" it always appears to pass by at the same rate for us. The same way that down is always defined as the direction you fall even if that can be different for other people relative to you.

You can just keep on pushing the accelerator and going faster forever of course. There's no limit to how fast you can travel. But light will always appear to travel at the rate that "shit happens" to you, so you'll never be able to outrun it.

It's somewhat meaningless for us to understand a universe with an unbounded speed of light since the speed of light is an essential component to how we perceive things. Don't even think of light as important either, light is just the fastest shit. What it really does is effect the rate at which subatomic particles move and energy transfers.

A universe without a maximum speed would likely be a universe without even a concept of time. That's something we can't really understand.

You need to do that with renewables as well. It's naive to think solar and wind aren't also influenced by business interests. I think the winning move is simply not to play. I can't imagine this shit is very popular in women's sports circles but they go along with it anyway because they fear the alternative. The problem is as it spreads that's inevitable anyway.

The real question going down the line is what is the appropriate response to deal with pornography. People want to argue that it's not a "1st ammendment" issue but in many ways it is, you've got to define what porn is and what it isn't, but then you've got to give the government power to go in and stop the kids from getting at it and I question entirely, how you would do that? Like exactly how? You could break the internet, censor everything that isn't pre-approved by the government. That would fuck up the internet for everyone, but you'd still have the illegal internet out there or the foreign internet that could be accessed by anyone with a medium of tech knowledge and the kids would still have their unlimited porn access.

I think we've got to be smart about this, and go after the people making the pornography in the first place. Especially the advertisers. You've got to get them where the money is. Sites like porn hub are very obviously in the pornography game so there's no 1st amendment quandaries. Well you make it illegal for them to sell adult advertisements to children. Then you seize the money when they can't prove that their views are from legal adults. They'll figure out the best way to prevent kids from getting on after that. Could do the sting operations where the cop gets some underaged kid to try to access the site and when they do hit them with fines.

There's ways to cope with it. Of course responsibility does ultimately rely on the parents to enforce but the changing of technology does leave them out of the loop much of the time. These days I think you've practically got to remove any sort of un-supervised internet access from your kids until they are old enough to pay for their own. But I do think you've got to find a balance between letting the kids play with the new technologies so they can learn them vs protecting them from the problems they cause. You've just got to make very clear, reasonable, and deliberate rules.

Will add that I think the association of the religious people with the "conservatives" is a relatively recent phenomenon. I think the religious "conservative" moral panic types are a lot closer to progressive liberal ideals than conservative positions. I mean if you think about it they are anti-alcohol, anti-drug, anti-gambling, etc, all these anti-vice positions were a big part of progressive movements and were and are largely driven by women, partly because women have more empathy and see the legitimate problems all these vices cause, but also partially because on some level they don't want to compete with men's attention with various vices. In the past these women tended to be highly religious because well, the church was the primary social institution and that's where women did their socializing. (It's not like they were the ones going to the saloon.)

Now I think it's changed and the internet has become the primary socialization hub. I think you'll see that with the mass adoption of cellphones, there's a huge increase in women using it along with the rise in social media.

Again somewhat anecdotal but when I first got on Facebook made tons of friends with women (hell yeah why not) and noticed that in general they tended to post a lot more often and a lot of the, what I'd call non-humorous memes, political populist points, etc. Even if it was still at a point where I largely agreed with them I thought it was rather a waste of time.

Political rant videos are basically preaching to the choir. Even when right they aren't really telling you anything new it's just, complaining about things. I'm all in favor of that but it does hit s point where it just gets tired to me. You need to complain about things but I do agree a nice humorous spin can be a lot better since it makes you at the very least feel happy while listening to how terrible things are.

Still that's a barrier to comedians getting their message out. I see a lot of comedians go and say something funny. But it's not really a joke. They say some true thing that everyone knows, and they say it in a non-threatening palatable way, but people laugh at it because of that and it doesn't threaten their positions. Since they can just brush off the true criticism as being just a joke.

I sit in comedy shows laughing and enjoying myself, but I sometimes hear a joke, think it's very funny, but not because the joke is funny, but because everyone is laughing at the joke. Because to me it's not a joke, but everyone laughing at this ridiculous aspect of society and not taking it seriously, that is the joke.

I'm really not sure how you can get this message our or get people to listen to it better. "Can you change your sex yes no?" Has a pretty obvious answer. But your answer is either rooted in physical reality or it's rooted in ideological orthodoxy. There's no middle ground between them because they utterly use two very different lines of logic to arrive at their conclusion. It's like trying to explain to your friends why going with the nice Jehovah's Witness that came by is a bad idea, or explaining to your friend why they won't get rich selling Tupperware.

If I have to explain to someone why taking hormones and cutting their dick off isn't going to make them happy, I mean I can do it. I can explain why it's not going to make them happy. But the idea is just so bizzare to begin with that if you don't intrinsically understand why it's a bad idea you are already fucked.

Daily Wire isn't that bad (yet) but their pundits are mostly concerned with ideological arguments rather than approaching their ideological arguments through very rational explanations that can resonate with people who don't share the ideology. I mean that's the point it is primarily to make money. And to do that you tell your audience what they want to hear. I get it. And that is fine.

Matt Walsh is right on the trans issue, I think his larger political ideas miss the mark in a lot of ways, but when it comes to just pointing out who fucking rediculous a lot of the bullshit is he is good at that.

He does understand that giving a heavily religious argument won't attract normies since he seems to sidestep the issue entirely with his "what is a woman" documentary. He gets it, let the people talk, let them tie their own rope.

The ACLU has definitely fallen far. I think that's a difference between the youthful, zealous strains of political action where they want to fight everyone and show no quarter with the older more tempered strains where you understand that treating your enemies with dignity and respect, where it is due, and giving them the same "rights" in a fair fight is the winning move for any number of reasons, not the least of which you don't waste effort fighting ghosts. In the KKK case, as I've said in the WBC case, you're best bet is to just let them say what they wanna say, the KKK is going to have to give a good case for racism in the public square and if you're confident your side is right you have nothing to fear from their argument. It is easily countered. Same with the WBC, I think it's absolutely horrid they went out being cunts at funerals, and well, if we are going to make a very specific law, for this very specific problem, that applies to everyone, like "you can freely protest funerals anywhere except for within 500 meters of the funeral itself" or something I could get behind that, but again, the best option is to ignore these cunts and horrid as their behavior can be, especially if you were on the pro-lgbt side the WBC is basically winning the argument for you anyway since they are alienating the general public.

I think we are seeing another political shift. As we always do really. We have always been at war with Eurasia after all. The Republican party was a radical anti-slavery party, the democrats were absolutely the party of the racists, until is switched. Indeed it switched again? It's hard to say exactly where these switches occur. But they seem to change generation from generation. The Dems are the pro-corporate establishment party. The GOP the pro-corporate anti-established establishment party. Until the next election of course. Then they're going to be the pro status quo party while the other party is the anti status quo party? Filter in some new flavor of the month cultural war issues and you'll have your fun. St. Patriarchy Day is Elf-phobic anyone? Perhaps we get at the true evil in our society. Toilet paper and how it kills the trees! I am the Lorax I speak for the trees because the trees can't speak for themselves. No trees shall be cut down before the third-trimester!

Before I have a psychotic break thinking about the poor poor plight of the Elf-phobic trees and the rampant discrimination of them and the arborphiles by the flora-sexual-phobes. I must remind you that we have always been at war with Eastasia!

Is it that different? I think you've always seen cases of the left censoring the left. Often because they fear the reaction of conservatives hurting their ability to implement policies?

I think what you see now is a "communications cultural revolution" where the tech changed faster than the laws and the old left got totally supplanted by a new radical left that understood the new means of communication. It's like how when the printing press was invented it spurned revolutions across Europe.

Yeah no I agree the situation in public schools is also quite bad and they are definitely going to end up messing up kids a lot there. Homeschooling isn't always terrible but there's a key difference between the situations.

In a school situation there are people around who are "supposed to" notice if the kid has problems. Like if the kid shows up half starved or with obvious injuries or the kid mentions their house is full of cat piss or something. Sure often times they don't notice the problem because the system is broken.

Homeschooling just means there's nobody to notice ever. Since you've already got the crazy parents picking it specifically to hide from the negative attention they are getting from school officials I think it exasperates the issue further.
