I have a theory that a lot of it is driven by access to online porn allowing the fetishists to find each other and egg each other on more. As for why anime it's probably got something to do with that one popular comedy anime from the 80's that centered around the main character that was cursed to swap sex driving rule 34 content.

I used to be totally confused why any normal person would date a tranny. But then I realized: there really aren't any, because the people who do date trannies aren't normal; they're just a freak pretending to be normal. At least until the inevitable day when the inner freak can't be contained any longer. So, yeah, this Redditor's story seems pretty par for the course to me.
