Thanks for the laugh.

"Do not fetishise trans folk." ...pretending a significant section of society fetishizes trans people is hilariously tone deaf.

This entire article is amazingly spoiled and upper middle class.

I would, however, pay to see the gory fallout if these coddled kids ever have the guts to make the same demands in a bad neighbourhood at 2AM to our local gang as they loiter in the parking lot screaming threats at everyone they see. Will their pronouns still matter when their next door neighbours openly deal crack and are threatening to kick their doors in?

I always played games with a male name/avatar, because who has time for a bunch of death and rape threats and dick pics? (Also, blast from the past: if you were a female toon in skimpy armour dancing on a mailbox in Silvermoon, I assumed you were a gross dude who never bathed.) 🙄 It's best to find female friends to play with if you want to use voice chat in games.

They may be sussing you out by your typing/phrasing style. There are analysis tools you can look up which are reasonably accurate at assuming if you're male or female based on the way you word things.

I know you didn't ask for advice, but: there's no obligation to engage with PMs like that. Turn em off or ignore them. You don't owe people a response.

Horses, dogs, and humans have been coexisting and selecting for traits for so many millennia that we can read each other's emotions from facial expressions. We care about each other.

I can't in good faith pretend that the trans crowd cares about other beings.

I am <40 and grew up in a "first world" country, and yet multiple people I know rode horses to school, grocery store, etc. I owed my horse my life several times over, as she owed me. OTOH I have never received anything but rape, murder, and death threats from trans people. The most dangerous animal my horse ever fended off was a human male.

Buy the horse. Divorce the husband. Experience love and loyalty.

Edit to add (shaddup the font is tiny on this screen). Summary: grown-ass adult is jealous of a more deserving being.

But they were respectively actually neither black nor dolphin, and we all learned something...

I'd have thought the violent TRAs would be threatening to rape and burn Trey and Matt, and Richard Dawkins, the way they threatened JK Rowling. I wonder why they haven't...I just can't seem to put my finger on the penis, I mean reason, why they only target some people who point out their insanity. I wonder what they all have in common.

And that's enough sarcasm from me for one weekend.

They've been shockingly accurate in their predictions:

Mr. Garrison claiming to be a lesbian; his eagerness to get an abortion because it's validating; his blatant misogyny and sexual crudeness when talking about himself as a woman as real women edge away in disgust; his proclamation to Mr. Slave that because he's had a sex change they are now a straight couple; his shock and selfish rage when Mr. Slave says "but I'm gay" and rejects him; his homophobia and attempt to ban gay marriage; his transition regret and demand to be given a new penis as if he's some sort of lego set...

And then there's brave and stunning Bruce Jenner running as Garrison's Vice President after running down the pedestrian with his car (he's rumoured to be considering running for CA governor in real life).

And Strong Woman's run-in with her ex, who is identifying as a woman just to humiliate her and beat her at sports...

Whatever drugs Trey is taking, they appear to enable him to actually see the future.

The digital Kevlar comment is not about using real names, it's about maintaining habits that prevent people and their networks of association from being identified and linked across multiple sites in the tools TRAs are using. Identification should be voluntary and shouldn't expose one's friends.

Of course it's sinister and evil and wrong and should be illegal. Much like Wal-Mart identifying customers with facial recognition the second they walk in.

But unfortunately it's not. (Support the EFF.)

So if one uses the same handle or password or email in more than one place, or uses one's real photo ever, or leaves metadata in a photo, or puts down real info ever, or doesn't use VPN, or doesn't use Tor, or doesn't use containered browsing, or doesn't have a hardened browser, etc., well... why the hell would one ever be that stupid?

ex: Kellie-Jay Keen's site wouldn't accept my secure encrypted (well known! paid!) email address...so she'll never get money from me. I won't let her expose me to risks.

We've known these vile TRAs are doing this for yeeeaaaars. Literally. They used to crowd fund devs. It's past time for women to to get digital Kevlar and a better knowledge base.

[–]malleus_maleficarum[S] 5 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 0 fun6 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

amidst the abundant evidence that it's not

A few years ago I'd have thought I sounded like a loon, but now it seems so reasonable to mention how thorough the trans movement has been at systematically trying to discredit and de-platform the very academics who would provide the expert testimony re: immutability. It feels highly coordinated, along with the development of mass-taggers to identify wrong-thinkers, the take-over of reddit/twitter/facebook policies...

It's another if they hope to enter a professional field where they have to interact with all kinds of people and they have no control over what they're exposed to.

I do worry about institutional capture, but I think the sheer volume of the rest of society - of the people they have to bully - will turn them into Hitler slogging through Russia. Perhaps I'm too optimistic.

They've done as predicted. Now that they've gotten women thrown off reddit and attacked women like JK Rowling, they're moving on to men: gay men's forums, Linehan, etc. And of course men are harder to bully and society cares more about their opinions when it happens.

I was a tomboy and I wanted to be a boy as a teen. I wasn't unhappy with my body or my social life, but I desperately wanted the privilege of not worrying about pregnancy, or rape, or a lifetime of catcalling and gross comments and being told girls are supposed to get married and have kids. I wanted to travel the world as a man with two pairs of khakis in a backpack, riding trains and sleeping in cheap hostels with no fear of men. I wanted men's jobs that paid well and came with respect and adventure. The TRA determination to get around the obstacle of parents, the grooming, the recruiting documented in that book sent a cold jolt through me. I'm sure that they would have tried to drag me in too, and that's horrifying.

But, I think the dam is breaking because we're all having the same jolts: "They'd have tried to get their hooks in me as a teenager" and "They're coming after every adult with boundaries and critical thinking skills." It's getting more and more personal for the bystanders.

Thank you so much for sharing all this knowledge and insight. I'm not a lawyer, so I find your perspective really illuminating and educational.

so no doubt she has a few friends who might be interested in this topic.

She had mentioned the framing of 'trans' as immutable in regards to positioning it for coverage under the 14th Amendment's Equal Protection Clause; and I thought to myself when reading through that chapter that I'd like to see their claims of immutability get a serious public airing out and a legal challenge in the future.

Known serious risks are very obviously not being disclosed and are arguably if not actually intentionally being kept hidden.

Excellent point. And Lupron's off label/experimental usage seems to be enabling prescribers to say, "We don't have studies on the effects of this specific off label use so we can't inform as to what the full future risks are". And no studies of its use as a puberty blocker in healthy kids are in progress either. They clearly don't want any studies done. (Of course when it was offered to me it was on-label, so to speak, therefore all the horrific side effects were explained. I noped out of there.)

We really should be pushing this discussion in the public domain through every mechanism and angle possible.

Off you trot to re-education camp. In all seriousness, it's starting to feel like the dam is breaking and we are starting to talk about it more, and more frankly, as a society in just the last few months. Which gives me a modicum of hope.

I don't feel comfortable talking to elderly community leaders about how a man is manipulating them for sexual purposes. Most of them wouldn't understand what I am on about anyway.

It often seems to me that the generational gap is insulating trans activism from full visibility. I'm a lawyer but this is not my field so I'd have to look more into the legal framework but I doubt the "informed consent" defense is anything close to bulletproof. There's only so much liability a person can waive.

Words to inspire hope here.

I'm not surprised that the lawsuits have started in the UK as they're ahead of the U.S. in terms of how far the trans craze has made changes to the law and warped the public discourse, so they will provide a helpful template for our legal approach.

I would think that the fact Britain is not split into 50 different states (with different laws, different data collection, etc.) and has a unified national health care system is helping bring it into the light. Would love your knowledgeable opinion on that.

I have no political home and never have: I'm simply a woman. I likely disagree with a lot of other women on a lot of various topics, but I believe that being female is the most important, indeed the only, uniting characteristic necessary. I'm here because we all have that in common and it has shaped every aspect of our lives and people who are not women will never understand it. And if we do not unite we will be once again be bulldozered by men and corporations: our human rights, our boundaries, our bodily integrity, our independence...

I support abolishing the notion of gender, which is impactful to society so I talk about it.

But I also loathe cats and support the abolishment of twinsets, which is only really impactful to me so I don't talk about those items. :)

Jack's Blowhole in New Zealand: such a fun name for a great way to dispose of a body. You have to be way out in the middle of nowhere at the ass end of the earth and then hike a bit to find it.

Also, about 20 years ago while on a road trip: 3:30 AM at a truck stop in the Midwest USA, mist swirling around, and into the cone of light from a streetlamp stepped...a bagpipe player. He played for about half an hour between Greyhound stops for me and ~3 other people.

Every few years I have the honour of sitting down to dinner with a man who is the top instructor in his martial arts discipline in his country. He teaches men with multiple black belts, who are huge and fit and know how to handle themselves, how to get out of close quarters group assaults: being ganged up on in truck stop bathrooms, dudes coming at you with bats and wrenches when you're closing up your shop office late at night, etc. Not "win"...just get out before a traumatic brain injury or a shattered eye socket or death happens. That's realistic self defence: getting the hell away without being annihilated. They aren't walking around shit-scared any more than I am, but they are definitely walking around with an appropriate sense of their place in the universe.

One of the best things I figured out as an adult was that a lot of men are just as scared of violent men as I am. It was a good widening of perspective for me that let me truly hear more of what some of them had to say on the topic.

Also, I'm really tired of being told what boundaries I should have.

It feels recent: I've been noticing an uptick in this behaviour all around me for the last 5 years or so. I get that we all do it as humans: we all pick at each other and tell others what they should/n't do. It's part of being social animals. But it's a trait I'm trying hard to eliminate in myself (I'm always asking myself: Who do I want to be in two years?) and it's a primary issue that keeps me out of women's groups.

More and more I'm seeing other women dare to tell each other who they should vote for, where they should donate their money, etc. I want to hear other points of view, I may well agree after I hear them! But I'm not down with people judging each other as 'trash' or 'irrational' for having opposing experiences or voicing other opinions -- it feels like I'm constantly fighting the purity spiral in every single group I belong to. It's exhausting.

When I took women's self defence in my late teens, it was from a female instructor with 3 black belts. The first thing she said was "I have 3 black belts and I was still raped." She pointed out that there are situations where fighting back will get you killed and that men can punch women so hard that it can fracture our skulls or kill us outright. That was her class intro (!!) and her advice was "Never let your guard down. Always listen to your instincts."

When I travel, the number one thing men warn me about...is other men. Am I constantly terrified of shadows? Of course not. But I never let my guard down and it's saved me at least 3 times in the last 10 years from really, really bad shit.

My greatest fear of old age/physical decline is exactly what u/MarkTwainiac is describing. Men and boys have been engaging in a relentless onslaught of violent, predatory behaviour since I was 5 years old and it will never get better. It's why even 30+ years ago my mother/aunts were unmoveable on the topic of female-only home health aides for my grandmother. It's why my mother used to say she'd rather fall down the stairs and be eaten by coyotes than end up being victimized in a nursing home.

Thanks for saying this MT.

Other people do not get to dictate the risk level you are comfortable with. You can't know for sure if a man has good intentions, and it's not your responsibility to prioritize his potential butthurt feelings over your safety. If he's a decent man, he is aware that his presence can make lone women nervous. I know plenty of dudes who will hang back to create a safer distance, or cross the street to pose less of a threat.

The article "Pronouns are Rohypnol" is a great resource for understanding why so many of us refuse to use "preferred pronouns". It used to be in the sidebar of r/gendercritical for quick reference.

https://archive.fo/b1pHk

*I’ve heard many people tell me they don’t mind doing this, as a courtesy, although it takes some effort to keep up the mental gymnastics of perceiving one sex, but consistently using pronouns for the other. That’s a personal choice, and I respect the reasons why some people make it.

I’ve also heard many people declaring that anyone who won’t comply (usually directed at a woman) is obnoxious, mean, hostile, and unpleasant. ‘Misgendering’ is hate speech. They say.*

And GC views are borderline illegal in some countries (see police logging hate incidents in Britain) so why would women want their faces attached to their membership if their faces can be searched against a database of driver's licenses? It can so easily used to shut down free speech. And what if a TIM breaches that database and uses womens' photos to hunt them down and murder them? Just...no.

It's a social networking app that uses facial recognition to weed men out during the automated account set up.

So, here's my recollection of what went down. Anyone else can chime in:

Sall tried to debut it to r/gendercritical.

She received a lot of feedback that the app was: a) not women-only because she was letting trans women in on purpose, b) the term "girl" was viewed as degrading or condescending by a lot of adult women, c) the word "Giggle" was offputting to women who fight to be taken seriously and d) so, so pink, which is reminiscent of gender stereotypes and the pink tax. Also e) facial recognition is creepy.

She told us TWAW and blew off our feedback.

Then she came back months later and basically said we'd been right and trans activists were bombarding her with threats.

...and now this. Make of it what you will.

I can certainly see where you are coming from and you raise valid points. But I've already had to ruthlessly cut out women in my life who are career social workers who would cheerfully make you and I share a room in a shelter with a TIM. That's real and immediate and I will not allow those women back into my life, my home, my support network, my trust, etc. They have prioritzed predatory men over other women. They can get help from those men instead of from me.

If that shelter has a TIM in it, it's unusable by me or any woman I care about. Shut the shelter down and end all funding, revoke the social workers' licenses, and repurpose the property. I consider the women who run it and let TIMs in to be traitors -- I don't want them in my home, my life, or my support network. People in positions of trust should feel the backlash when they betray that trust by compromising the values of their mission.

Regarding Item 5. Physical letters to elected officials/media orgs/NGOs for those of us with long-standing donation patterns...

Has anyone else noticed how many women are still reluctant to actually cancel their Planned Parenthood, ACLU, women's shelter, etc., donations even though they disagree deeply with TIMs on the board & hormones being prescribed, cheating athletes, men in the shelter... The instinct to be non-confrontational and just let the donation lapse, or to keep it going and ask weakly and politely that the organization stop what they're doing (and reconsider pretty please) is allowing these groups to ignore us.

Cancel it! Cancel the damn donation! Swing the axe and then send a physical letter telling them why. Don't ask them to reconsider. Tell them concisely and bluntly why they lost your money and where it's going now. Many non-profits share donor lists, and as they ramp up for the elections in November they'll see donors shifting their support.

Yep. When I was that age, a boy a couple years older was determined to beat my head in (with rocks, logs, etc). Any time I was alone he would try to run me down and smash my face. He was sneaky. He knew not to do it in front of his grandparents or anywhere someone might see the whole beating take place. He terrorized multiple girls at church. When girls complained, everyone said "boys will be boys" and laughed it off instead of making him stop.

It generally seems like only women care when their daughters are harmed.

If my mother, and other mothers, had not gone to his grandmother and issued direct private threats, he'd never have been stopped. Not a single father, elder, or male sunday school teacher gave a single solitary shit that a 7 year old boy was punching 5 and 6 y.o. girls in the head.

Like many assault cases, nothing can be proved 100% because "he said she said" makes it a question of who is more trustworthy. I really hate that phrase, because it implies that evidence from women and girls is automatically less trustworthy or insufficient.

Yep. And the doubt: "Are you sure that happened?" and ""Well we don't want to get little Charles thrown out of class do we." The older I get the more clearly I see just how young I was when people in positions of authority began showing me that I didn't matter as much because I was female, and how damaging those experiences were.

we all went together with a teacher supervision

Yep. At that age some kids are still having trouble getting on higher toilets, reaching faucets, etc. Who lets a five year old walk off alone like that?!

One can't help but think they are intentionally setting kids up to be assaulted or hurt.

Edit: It's pretty clear he assaulted her. They just can't prove it. So it's still problematic... if there is no intervention and no change in policy he will likely offend again... which is also scary for all the other kids who will interact with him.

Quote from the investigation: “The [school] district’s approach allows children of different biological sexes to mix in the bathrooms, an area where students may engage in misconduct out of sight of adult supervision. Given the serious nature of the reports of harassment reportedly occurring in school bathrooms, one might have anticipated the district would be extra vigilant in providing a proper response under Title IX.”

Interesting that they're maintaining an environment where they know it's a problem and they know there will be no witnesses next time either.

I know, brains don't even finish developing until we're 25.

When you fiiiinally get there and they let you rent a car all by yourself for a reasonable price, then you know you're a grown up at last.

But what do I do in the meantime?

I do not have a magic spell. But I do know rather a lot of lesbians. Places/activities where I either hang with the ones I already know or run into more: Kayaking. Hiking. Cross-country skiing. The farmer's market. The feed store. The gun range. A lot of them golf. I used to run into them a lot when I went to dog training events. Are you driving yet? ...consider a used Subaru :)

You have already found us and we like you the way you are. You will start to bump into accepting people in real life too as your independence increases and you have more control over your surroundings. And the backlash is starting, the community is growing, activism is happening.

There's no rule that says you have to hang out with people your own age. Once you expand your social interactions to older people and people who may not be passionate leftists, it may not feel so oppressive.

Older people (60's and up) were so good to me when I was 16-25. They were willing to teach me skills: canning, sewing, roofing, beekeeping, winetasting, installing a new toilet, refinishing furniture...you name it. And they can speak from such a wide range of perspectives and experiences. Be careful of creeps, don't be alone with strangers, but it's okay to sensibly expand your social group.

Asking other people's parents/grandparents what they're doing or how they did something will eventually get you sucked in to participating, and then you meet more of them. I was at a picnic a few years ago and was discussing bathroom renovations and tile with my friend, and an older lady just leaned over and said, "Do you need a tile saw? I have a tile saw." ...bingo :D
