I remember finding out about "health goth" a few years ago and thinking it was kind of ridiculous. I think my main issue with it is the name, because I don't see anything healthy or gothic here. The only example out of yours that I think might be able to embody something more goth is this one..
All the others are just very basic sport styles, but in black. Black doesn't make something goth imo. Of course I am not even close to an authority on this but it just kind of rubs the wrong way, like the label doesn't fit. Unfortunately goth has been kind of taken and majorly watered down by the main stream these days.

How do you really feel about Joe Biden saying his VP pick will be a black woman? by medium_tomato in GenderCritical
[–]medium_tomato[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun - 4 months ago (0 children)
I understand what you are saying but even with being a feminist my whole life I just can't say that someone would be the most competent just because they are the same sex as me. Especially when we are discussing it like this, talking about some interchangeable woman instead of an individual. I don't want a female leader like this. I don't need women to be thrown a bone. If black women want this bone just for a token candidate that's nice I guess, but I can't respect that and I don't want that demeaning shit. I don't want pathetic affirmative action for women. Like you said, we had a huge diversity of candidates before and that's great to see. That's the only way I want a woman to win. Pandering suggests we can't do it.
Also there more you force X kind of people, the more flack they will get for being forced. Like I said I think in the end Biden's way is ultimately setting up women for failure not himself. My question was what do you think about Biden announcing his pick in such a manner. I don't doubt women are capable. I just hate how we are being set up to be seen as weaker token picks that need this.
I would feel more forgiving towards TIMs if they actually fought for women’s’ issues – free and safe abortion for all, equal pay for equal work, guaranteed paid maternal leave, justice for victims of assault/rape, as a few examples – but since their gender identity is an “expression of who they are” by veruscka8 in GenderCritical

This is exactly what I always thought. It's so obvious that they aren't actually women because if they were, they would want to fight for these things rather than dismantling actual women's spaces. They always out themselves in exactly this way.
I said this to another commenter but my main dislike was that it was going to be a woman. Do I wish it was a woman? Yes but I never want it to be like this. Other commenters here have said things much more eloquently but I dislike that he is announcing this stuff right off the bat. Before we know the individual pick or the nominees he has reduced them to their sex and maybe race. Or the fact that they are not white. Like to me it's like having them be interchangeable objects to help him prop up his ladder. Different women have very different opinions and things they would prioritize as VP or maybe even president. There are a number of female politicians whose stances I very much disagree with and would not want her, that particular woman, to be president.
Also as another good commenter said, this woman may be qualified but by announcing it like this, and only choosing her from a tiny specific pool of possible picks, Biden already reduced her as a token pick to be scrutinized for that reason. I don't like this, I think it reflects badly on female politicians and just dirties up the efforts.

I actually would have cared very much if it was just woman or white woman. Tbh that is my primary concern, the black thing is just kinda the cherry on top. It's super pathetic to me how he is trying to use a black woman to get him the "black vote" and the "female vote". Like I feel it would be even more demeaning to me if I was black in a way, or if he said he wanted a woman of my actual specific ethnicity.
I don't think that the 2 or 3 black women already in politics aren't hard working or qualified. I think it's just sad that their qualifications are being reduced to their race and sex, not even their stances.. don't you find that at least a little bit demeaning? I would very much support a black VP pick if it was between her and a bunch of others, but just..this way feels super gross.

What mental gymnastics are you performing that you think I believe only while old men should be able to lead lmfao. I believe that women are strong and capable, and SHOULD lead but it should be deserved and not tokenism.
Women are not fucking interchangeable. Black women are not interchangeable. I will support a specific woman for the things she stands. I will not support some rando chosen just cause she ticks off the marks for being female and black. And the worst part is that the reason I won't support her is because some old white man chose her to check those marks and be interchangeable. That old white manbasically reduced her down to those qualities.

On one hand yes but on the other hand white men have no issue arguing against white men who they don't agree with. We literally had opposing parties with white men opposing each other. I'm embarrassed that women can't do the same but love this pathetic dangling carrot of "aww I'll pick a cute black woman for you guys".
[–]medium_tomato[S] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun - 4 months ago (0 children)
I understand you didn't say that. I am just curious about hypothetical questions. If you wouldn't vote for a white man, but the only other option would be a black woman who has completely differing views from you, would you be likely to vote for her, or abstain?
I am super undecided right now because no candidate is bringing to the plate a lot of things I support. A lot of people keeps saying Jo Jorgensen but I don't agree with libertarian views so I am unlikely to vote for her as well.

Your last sentence really hits.. I feel the same exact way. I just can't find a candidate I can vote for this election, but I don't want to sit this one out.
You can still support dems while hating this tokenism. Can I ask more about why do you feel good about it? I feel like this VP pick is so different from Hillary actually running herself, or Nancy Pelosi or even AOC, who are already very outspoken and big female personalities in politics on their own, even if I don't always agree with them.
So would you vote for a black woman if she is a raging TRA activist and pro lifer, if she is the only woman there?
[–]medium_tomato[S] 15 insightful - 1 fun15 insightful - 0 fun16 insightful - 0 fun16 insightful - 1 fun - 4 months ago (0 children)
Ok but whoever she is, it IS true that she isn't getting the position due to merit. Because of the history of politics, we have a huge amount of men in politics an a tiny percentage of women. Even tinier is black women. I dont want a stupid pandering interchangeable woman. I want a woman who is smart, capable, and is someone to actually look up to. The pool is far too small here, so that's why I am insulted. If we had like 50% men 50% women in politics, and like 50% of those women were black, then okay MAYBE I can be okay with this kind of pick, but he is literally picking someone purely on biology and skin color, that's like 1%, political views and experience be damned. I just can't support this at all...
Women are fucking capable. I don't want this pathetic infantalization of "ooh lets pick a woman so the little women will be happy and mindlessly vote for me". There is no such thing as the female vote. We are all different, and we can disagree even on this kind of specific sub.

What does alternative fashion and subcultures mean to you? by medium_tomato in AlternativeFashion

I have read this before and absolutely love this essay! It explains so much of what happened or is happening with my favorite subcultures/hobbies/fashions. Look at how gothic influence is everywhere these days. High fashion brands that never used the aesthetic have been making some very goth shoes and pieces. Same goes with kawaii things now. On one hand it's kind of cool when your favorite stuff is suddenly everywhere and you don't need to search so hard for it. But on the other hand, it makes you wonder what happens when it goes out of trend. Something that is pretty timeless just got a timestamp placed on it.
For example Harajuku fashion styles have been around since decades ago. Then from the early 2000s they became a niche group in the west. Right now they are all the rage but suddenly something that was timeless because of how out of place it was everywhere became the 2010s fad. So if you got into it in 2000s and will still be in it way into the late 2020s you will now be labeled as stuck on 2010s.

How do they pay taxes? Sales tax barely counts. Even tourists pay that. US Citizens, and people with green cards and work visas actually have to pay that big painful chunk of taxes that comes out of our income. That goes to federal programs as well as state. Then in some states like California illegals that contribute nothing get special programs and get free fucking college. That's just not right at all.

Your reply is exactly what I'm talking about here. First of all "white" is subjective, to begin with... I'm freaking Jewish, I am white by your standards but not white by a lot of other people's. And you don't know anything about me, what kind of culture I come from originally, etc. My parents and I came to a new country to avoid prejudice.
You are the person speaking to some made-up white female strawman. I also never said or thought that people should minimize their backgrounds. If anything, you are minimizing a lot of "white" women's backgrounds by lumping in white. Go try that with Asians and see how they like it when you say Indian women's experience is the same as Japanese. This is what I mean when I say that this kind of racial intersectionalism is hurting all of us.

The reason they do this is probably to prevent this exact situation. Creating a new sub with zero content and zero users is hard. I think the mods just didn't want new people making reactionary subs with good topics just to give up on them quickly and leave them deserted...
Just Say No to Being Umbrella-Termed ("LGBTQ+" and "Queer") by [deleted] in SaidIt
The whole queer umbrella thing making an uncomfortable comeback is similar to me to the "people of color" thing. I can never bring myself to describe a person as "having color" or being a "person of color". It just seems so wrong on a fundamental level, and it also turns the world back into white and other categories. There is no such thing as people of color... There are people with different ethnicities and varying skin tones. Sometimes you can have two people from the same culture having vastly different skin tones. Does this make one a person of color and the other not??
There is just so much disgusting regressivism going on right now.

I have definitely looked into libertarian thinking maybe it would be a good third party but after reading what they are for I just can't support that either. You should totally just invest in a sewing machine. I also dabble, but going from hand-sewing to machine has been a game-changer in speed, and just trying things out. It's so much easier to just try again when you only spent 15 minutes sewing something rather than an hour.
And I agree it's amazing when you realize you can customize anything. My thing is that after learning sewing, I can make cheap accessories or embellishments that otherwise would cost a lot.

This shit is honestly terrifying and makes me believe that the media is actually trying to create a civil war. For months they have been advocating for mail-in voting, but we can already see how awful it will turn out. New York's primary was on June 23rd and they still don't know who won. Ballots are being lost, mailed late, or not even arriving.
This is the perfect setup because it doesn't matter who actually wins neither side will believe it. I feel like I am once again watching the wreck in slow motion, like I did in Jan-Feb when coronavirus was just starting to spread.
We can't let these awful articles pit us against each other. If the gov't will put a double standard on protests, then fuck it, go out and vote in person. This is the only thing we can do to prevent the civil war the media is so thirsty to get.

Although you raise an interesting thought of "what DO other Muslim nation's think of this?". But it's kind of not the best way to articulate that point. I would really like to find out the answer to that question myself.
I mean yes but you did start going there for a reason. I miss older reddit. People used to talk about the reddit hivemind in 2010 but it was so much more bearable.
This is so true. At the same time I am finding it more fun and exciting that my posts and comments are actually seen here and I have replies. Sometimes dumb replies but sometimes good. I would get too drowned out on reddit so often didn't bother. This place could use a few extra thousand people though..

Exactly! That's what I'm slowly trying to do. Can you recommend any existing light subs that can use more cute or funny things? Or generate good discussion?
If you could be more specific it would really love up this sub and thread.
What are your favorite vintage thrifting finds?

I am not asking for a US intervention. I am asking for a world intervention. I think the US deserves a freaking break already. People get pissy if we help and pissy if we sit one out.
I think we need a world intervention because this is literally concentration camps. Everyone always asks how they let Germany get away with that so long, and here is our answer today.
Also, I would be for US intervention if we currently weren't in our own hole, and didn't already "help" in a lot of places we would have been better off ignoring.
