There's no need to do it for all subs, just the ones that are being spammed and/or mods aren't active.

So they probably started with the worst subs, and now that those are cleared, they'll be able to see the other ones that are picking up the spam and can do the same.

The code has been working, the spammers have just moved to other subs. So admins need to put the same code in place on those subs now too.

It's not really advertised anywhere, but while you're looking for additional subs to join, be sure to check: https://saidit.net/subs/notall

Those are subs that removed themselves from the s/all feed. The reason is typically because they have more aggressive rules and tailor their content, so mods are allowed to ban or remove for any reason rather than only abiding by the Pyramid of Debate.

But if there's something niche you're looking for, it's possible it could be there.

Also, I made s/AutoModerator for us here on SaidIt a while back. I did minimal set-up so it just has links to Old Reddit pages currently, but I wanted to make sure there was a place for all of us to ask questions about using the bot and get answers for scripting it.

I'm not a coder myself, I pretty much just copy-paste and fumble around to figure things out from that. But I can share anything my prior co-mod figured out with our own sub setup over many years, before she left she saved copies for me and our other mods.

Eventually I do want to replace the Reddit links with SaidIt instead. That's a large undertaking that I haven't set aside the time to do yet though. If there's more interest though, and/or anyone wants to help recreate the Wiki with me, let me know!

What do people think (including u/magnora7) if we all volunteer to mod a single sub we care about that's getting worked overtime by the spam, and help clean up for a while until M7 can find more admins willing to help (and/or mods who truly want to manage the sub)?

I've got several subs of my own already, but they're pretty dead. I would be willing to take on one more temporarily for the sole purpose of removing spam. Don't even have to give me permissions to ban or use Automoderator, just remove posts.

It's the same amount of effort reporting that spam ... only instead, I would actually be removing it from the site for everyone else too. I can commit to logging in once a day and doing that.

It's easy for spammers to get around age/karma limits, that would only be a temporary measure.

I remember hearing last year or maybe the year before that there's some sort of issue with sitewide banning, like a table is full or something? I dunno if that's been resolved, which is why I was thinking using Automod instead. Once a spammer is identified, it's as easy as just adding their name to this rule:

Sorry Musky, but that's not a good idea. What happens if I make multiple alt/bot accounts and block every person on this site? That creates report-spam and ties up the admins time cleaning it up.

Reports - even spam - are used for different reasons by individual users. As an example, I've reported users for spam in this sub but they aren't spamming the site generally. I don't want to block the users I reported. I just don't want them posting off-topic stuff in this sub. If my report blocks them, I won't ever see their genuine content elsewhere.

If you want to block a user, you can report and /or block from the same page. Look, I have the options right here on your post.

For those unfamiliar, "Scholastic" is a children's publishing company and they have regular book fairs for kids/tweens to buy their titles at lesser costs than retail.

I remember going to these book fairs and loving them. I was able to find historical fiction and wanted to learn more after reading, or browse through cartoon/comics and not feel serious.

The very last thing on my mind was sexuality/gender, that was icky. WTF is this LGBTQIA+ "representation"?

Bro, all you have to do is remove your sub(s) from s/all and put a disclaimer in the sidebar that mods remove non-relevant posts and comments. You don't even have to clarify further (although you can if you want). You don't have to fight against admins or sitewide rules, or the user who is antagonizing you. You can do what you want with 2 steps.

I personally don't agree with several users on this site and/or their language, but I appreciate that I and my subs are allowed to be here along with them and we can co-exist together. My personal feelings do not trump their right to free speech, and vice-versa. If certain users don't want to co-exist with me, you know what I do? Ignore them.

How do you feel about spam that's not the obvious kind - foreign bots linking to nonsense or shady URLs - but the more subtle kind - spamming the same post across multiple subs en-masse?

I'm seeing the latter happen more and more, and admins have had different opinions on that. Some see it as spam, and some see it as "any engagement is good engagement". Thought I should ask you directly.

To me it's sort of like what happened the the Iron Left a few years back, where they spammed their own content to take over the front page and drown out legitimate users of other subs. It's a little different though, because it's just a couple users that just mass-post the same thing, regardless of the actual intent of the sub.

Automoderator can do all of that, yeah. It doesn't ban, but it can remove posts and comments for a mod to manually review.

The downside is it can also be used maliciously against real users and content. And if there's no one actively moderating a sub, then both spam and real content just sits in a queue waiting for someone to handle it.

I saw it M7, I believe you. It's bad now, and it was a million times worse when you temporarily lifted it.

I remember scrolling through the front page of s/all and finding 1 legitimate post if I was lucky, and even my s/subscribed was maybe 3 or 4.

Sub mods have mostly abandoned their posts, and it's hard to find and keep admins around who will deal with cleaning up the mess sitewide for them. I feel for you. You made a place for all of us refugees and misfits to come together, and it's being shit on outside and in.

Putting that into place sitewide would kill what little remains of SaidIt. Pretty sure M7 won't tell users "this is a free speech site, but only once you earn it".

It can be done by individual sub mods though, utilizing AutoMod. Which would be effective if sub mods would do it and then regularly check the modqueue.

Unfortunately, there's a very limited amount of users who want to be sub mods and clean the crap out. I mean, just look at the state of this sub, and it's run by admins.

It's two different groups now.

There's "truscum" or transmeds who believe you need gender dysphoria to be trans, and that's the only reason anyone should consider transition.

And then there's the modern TQ+ movement filled with "tucutes", "transtrenders", and any possible letter/name/identity they make up and want to include. They shun truscum as evil bootlicking gatekeepers.
