Musk isn't stupid. He's clearly very smart but he's got a long history of making very grand elaborate promises that the naysayers say are impossible and the naysayers being proven right.

Musk is very good at talking to reporters, media personalities, and all hat by building his brand. He engages with the reporters on this king of grand philosophical standpoint, the philosophy usually resonates, and the reporters not being scientists can't ask about thr nitty gritty logistics of it because they lack knowledge of it. Plenty of pop-sci Public speakers are like this . Tyson, Kaku, etc. They're excellent public speakers. They're good at "explaining scientific concepts to the layman" but they're often just being philosophers rather than scientists.

I just think Musk's mars plans won't come to happen. Nothing about them gives me confidence that they are achievable. For space colonization we need to start with a base on the moon before we go to Mars. Just the logistics are way simpler.

We should send a manned mission to Mars as soon as we can I think but any sort of permanent human habitation there I think can wait.

And while I'm very much partial to the argument that it's worth going to Mars because it's there (economics be damned its cool). We can't totally ignore the economic aspect. It's very expensive and there's no good way to recoup the costs for large scale habitation. (But fot a manned mission the advances in science political soft power and the like I do think make up for the cost.).
