Throughout history, Islam usually spread by conversion, not by bringing in new people or displacing the locals. Muslim rulers often stayed a minority, while locals slowly adopted the religion over time through trade, marriage, and cultural influence.

1. Spain (Al-Andalus) Muslims ruled parts of Spain for centuries, but they never became the majority. Most Muslims were locals who converted, not migrants. After Christian reconquest, most were expelled or forced to become Christian again.

2. Ottoman Empire The Turks ruled a huge empire but stayed a minority. Locals like Greeks, Armenians, and Slavs kept their identities, even if some later adopted Turkish culture or converted to Islam.

3. India (Mughal Empire) The Mughals were foreign rulers over a mostly native South Asian population. Islam grew through Sufi preaching and local rulers—not by migration.

4. Southeast Asia Islam arrived with traders from Arabia, India, and China. Locals like Malays and Javanese adopted Islam while keeping their own culture. No mass invasion happened.

5. North Africa & Middle East After early Muslim conquests, Arabic became the main language, but the people—Berbers, Egyptians, Levantines—were not replaced. They just adopted Arab culture over time.

6. Central Asia Islam came through the Silk Road and Sufi missionaries. Native groups like Persians and Turkic tribes converted, but their cultures stayed alive. Later, these same Turkic Muslims helped spread Islam elsewhere.

7. Eastern Europe (Balkans) In places like Bosnia and Albania, locals converted under Ottoman rule, but their ethnic identities stayed the same. They weren’t replaced by Turks.

8. China (Hui Muslims) Muslim traders settled in China and married Han Chinese. Their descendants—the Hui—kept their Islamic faith but adopted Chinese culture. They look and live like Han Chinese today, except for religion.
