Quarterly observations Q1 2020: What signs of collapse do you see in your region? by happysmash27 in collapse

[–]happysmash27[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

From my comment on the SARS-CoV-2 thread in /r/collapse:

While these guys were neigh-oblivious before going on their wilderness trip where they jokingly wondered if everything would be different when they came back (everything really was totally changed), many of us were predicting potential disaster, and although we were a bit more on top of it than the general news, it looks like what has actually happened has been even worse than /r/collapse generally predicted! I cannot emphasize enough how unbelievably crazy it has gotten! The headlines feel like a disaster movie and are somehow even more dramatic than the bearish predictions on finds here! Like, from the daily update, we have headlines such as these in close proximity:

- California, New York, Illinois, New Jersey and Connecticut have all issued “stay at home orders”; they account for 1/3 of the US economy between them. About 5.4 million residents across the five states do not have health insurance, according to data from the Kaiser Family Foundation. That is about 19% of the total US uninsured.

- A member of the US vice president’s staff tested positive. The employee, who was not identified, had not come into close contact with either the US president, Donald Trump, or his boss, Mike Pence, who is in charge of the US’s coronavirus response.

- A nationwide curfew has begun in Jordan, limiting the mobility of its 10 million citizens indefinitely.

- Colombia also announced that it will begin a country-wide quarantine from Tuesday night.

COVID-19 is everywhere else too, and has comprised literally all of my news push notifications for a while now, also being on platforms like YouTube and unrelated subs like /r/furry.

This is an article which is documentative instead of predictive: The Modern Supply Chain Is Snapping

This article is about a real thing happening now: Coronavirus credit crunch could make 2008 look like 'child's play'

I am using articles like this for an assignment for my high school economics class which now has to be held online due to COVID-19!!!

Real current events!

This is, like, bigger than 9/11!

If I had posted that all these quarentines would happen a month ago, I bet even this sub would think I was being a bit sensationalist! If I read it, I would probably think "Real life probably won't work like those disaster movies when everything happens within weeks. Maybe it will turn out like this, but it probably won't." But… it's real, or at least the crazy human-made response is, in addition to a considerable growing number of infections and deaths. I have pictures of my supermarket shelves being half-empty. I haven't been at this apartment long, as I moved here right before this thing went full-on pandemic, but traffic used to be more of a rush hour on the street in front of here and the cross street used to be fairly busy too, instead of me needing to wait for longer and longer to see a single car. My city, not some far-off one, has issued a stay at home order. It's surreal.

Absolutely surreal.

I'm actually enjoying this a lot more than may happen with other disasters, mostly because the power, water, and internet still work. Thank goodness for that. It's like a vacation from constantly being shuffled from place to place for me, since although I still have school, it's much less stressful to stay at home and do it online, as my school is niche enough that it's very far away with a pretty long taxing journey each day. I'm worried about economic security, actually getting the coronavirus, getting enough supplies (I was on top of the news to urge family to buy early, but I'm worried it might not be enough), and the news is so ridiculously intense that I'm actually putting it down quite often… but my actual life style changes have just been exactly what I've wanted anyway for a long time, both because I like being inside and because they cause less carbon emissions. I guess I'm lucky in that respect, unlike the people that easily get cabin fever, and also because the family I am living with is decently economically secure, and even if we weren't, our new landlord can waive rent payments due to the crisis if needed. I hope most people will be okey in that respect. I also lose a lot of the worry of needing to have pre-made food for school each day, since I can just make a new batch of food whenever. I've been feeling unprepared, but now that I think about it, this is probably one of the disasters I am most prepared for, since I have such good infrastructure to do everything at home. Too bad I never bought some half-decent masks, though. I wore some all the way back on January 27th (I guess there really was worry of it spreading all those weeks ago?), but they were the non-N95 ones that hardly do anything.

Wait, January 27th? Maybe we predicted it after all, for me to be able to worry about getting masks even then.

But I digress and tangent so much, despite writing this on mobile for some strange reason. In summary, this has been as bad, if not worse, than /r/collapse has predicted, and that is utterly mind-blowing to me.

Everyone around me is suddenly taking COVID-19 much more seriously, some even wearing N95 masks. I am no longer just getting COVID-19 news from articles I purposefully look for, but also hear it from radios around me, from the empty store shelves, from about half of my news push notifications, from my Los Angeles school shutting down, from notifications on unrelated websites I go to, and even from the Two Steps From Hell Discord server about a cancelled concert, and from an unrelated comic on Reddit! This is the real deal, I think, at least as a noteworthy disaster and likely recession. It's affecting basically everything, and I would have a hard time getting away from it even if I didn't steadfastly read /u/Fwoggie2's daily updates.

I, personally, very much dislike pedophile hate, or hate on pretty much any group, for that matter. Criticising someone for rape is one thing, but criticising someone for attraction, even if they don't act on it, is another. I recently read a decent article about that here.

I have always been a big advocate for freedom of speech and freedom of information (mostly in regards to piracy though), and when I was 16, in around January 2018 according to my records, as well as a few years prior to that, I did not think that child pornography should be banned, and was banned from /r/Anarchism in large part because of this. This, combined with the fallout (I got suicidal and went to a mental hospital), was one of the worse stream of events I have experienced. I have a different, more complicated, and less extreme opinion now, but nevertheless the ambiguity of these rules concerns me, as this ban was a major reason I came to this site in the first place. Here is an incomplete, non-updated archive of the ban discussion page which I uploaded a while ago. I also took screenshots of it from RedReader, which are more updated, but which I haven't compiled yet due to reluctance to re-live the events.

On this subject, I generally agree with Richard Stallman, as I agree on a lot of subjects:

I am skeptical of the claim that voluntarily pedophilia harms children. The arguments that it causes harm seem to be based on cases which aren't voluntary, which are then stretched by parents who are horrified by the idea that their little baby is maturing.

https://stallman.org/archives/2006-mar-jun.html#05%20June%202006%20(Dutch%20paedophiles%20form%20political%20party)

Here is another quote that I partially agree with, but to a less intense degree:

The nominee is quoted as saying that if the choice of a sexual partner were protected by the Constitution, "prostitution, adultery, necrophilia, bestiality, possession of child pornography, and even incest and pedophilia" also would be. He is probably mistaken, legally--but that is unfortunate. All of these acts should be legal as long as no one is coerced. They are illegal only because of prejudice and narrowmindedness.

Some rules might be called for when these acts directly affect other people's interests. For incest, contraception could be mandatory to avoid risk of inbreeding. For prostitution, a license should be required to ensure prostitutes get regular medical check-ups, and they should have training and support in insisting on use of condoms. This will be an advance in public health, compared with the situation today.

For necrophilia, it might be necessary to ask the next of kin for permission if the decedent's will did not authorize it. Necrophilia would be my second choice for what should be done with my corpse, the first being scientific or medical use. Once my dead body is no longer of any use to me, it may as well be of some use to someone. Besides, I often enjoy rhinophytonecrophilia (nasal sex with dead plants).

Now I think it would probably be a bad idea to distribute child pornography with no regards to the implications, as some people may have been coerced to produce it. Still, if someone turns 18, then says that naked images of themselves from before then should be able to be redistributed, I see no reason that shouldn't be allowed. Furthermore, I think it is even more ridiculous to prosecute someone for having images of themselves while they are underage, especially if they are tried as an adult. Even that seems reasonable compared to banning fictional images of child pornography, which, although making sense to be banned from sites like Saidit, would be downright thought-policing to implement as law. The supreme court of the US has challenged doing so as unconstitutional, if I recall correctly. I would consider that as being as ridiculous as banning violent video games for promoting violence.

I am not a pedophile myself, by the way, but simply like freedom of information a lot and feel a need to defend most people if they are attacked, even if they are bad people or even my own personal enemies.

I'm fine if people want to be separated in their own countries, but I do not like being separated in my own simply because I have so many influences from so many different cultures. The closest thing to a culture I have is internet culture, and a few other subcultures on the internet, but those aren't tied to any location other than Earth, so don't work very well with nationalism.

I hate the word "capitalism" because it always ends in pointless semantic arguments between people who see capitalism as meaning this and other people who see capitalism as meaning "free markets", free markets which could also exist in a more "socialist" (this word is also confusing) society where individuals and cooperatives own the means of production instead of large corporations and billionaires. We need a new word to describe the currently prevalent oppressive system of moneyed interest in the world. Neo-feudalism, maybe?

Accurate for iOS, but not for Android, especially rooted. The reason I like this phone is that it is modular, with an easy to replace battery, SD card, and radios, and is open enough that it's easy to port other operating systems to it, and keep support of it for long periods of time. It also runs Wayland/Linux by default, meaning that it's easier to use desktop Linux apps in it than it is on Android. Best of all, it will be open hardware, which I strongly support, and is finally a phone that is just about as powerful as my existing OnePlus One, but with better features, meaning that it is actually an sidegrade in terms if specs rather than a downgrade, finally.

Hmm, I've seen that image before… Aha; that's literally the image we are commenting on ^m^ !

I think I already commented it, but just rice and soy still isn't as as good as a more wholesome vegan diet, with soy, beens, vegatables, and grains. Yes, perhaps the high-protein Mongolian diet was very healthy, and certainly more healthy than only rice and soy, but that doesn't mean a vegan diet can't be the same with enough planning. I could make a similar point to the opposite: Just because these vegan bodybuilders are more healthy than someone who eats omnivorous McDonald's food all the time, doesn't mean the omnivores who eat McDonalds are less healthy due to being omnivorous. Lots of factors go into a healthy diet, not just whether someone eats meat or not.

They should have high-protein foods like beans, then. Maybe in this isolated case a child died on a vegan diet, but in the vast majority of cases children don't, and I'm pretty sure in this case the issue was more not having enough food than the food being vegan. Meat is not a necessity; I was actually a lot more underweight before I became vegan than after, and this wasn't because I became vegan, but because I actually started eating enough.

I wish OpenNIC had some IP addresses as simple as 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, because although I use OpenNIC when I have time, I often end up using Google's DNS when I want a simple fix for DNS problems. One really annoying thing is how Networkmanager always resets my DNS to the ISP one, meaning that I have to manually set it and often don't want to go through the effort to find good OpenNIC IPs.

Plant-based diets can be pretty healthy if one eats a variety, rather than just grains. Besides, for me it's just not worth it to cause so much death and suffering for the sake of going longer between meals, especially when plant-based alternatives exist.

True, but even for those who already buy little, sometimes buying something is needed. One thing I would like would be a type of USB cable more repairable than the ones I currently have and a way to order internal USB cables that have rendered useless the products they are attached to simply because no replacement parts exist. I would love a replacement cable for my HHKB Lite2, especially, as the keyboard works perfectly fine other than the cable. I have a PC front panel that broke yesterday, too, with a chip that seems less-than-ideal for repair, and with no replacement parts off-the-shelf. Maybe I can solder it anyway, or support will have a replacement.

Kinda, but I have some different associations myself. Switzerland, for example, I also associate with neutrality and privacy laws, and Scandanavia I associate with Democratic Socialism and people being very happy more than I associate it with "Socialist Union". Belgium should probably have an association with waffles, and Spain could be labeled as "Spanish-speaking but not in Latin America". Italy is more associated with Rome and Venice than this "Godfathers" thing for me. Turkey is also a bit dictatorial, and Germany has cheap college. Other associations I have are probably more common in other cultures/subcultures I participate in than the USA itself.

It takes about 20 minutes to fill the car up to 80% charge and another 20 minutes to get to 100% charge.

You should be aware that charging above 80% could slowly damage your battery and reduce its capacity, which is why I have an 80% charge limit on my phone. Not charging above 80% can make batteries barely degrade at all!

Good point, and I do like the word "wordist". Even so, "retarded" also has a connotation of having less intelligence in areas where autistic people are no less intelligent, and sometimes even more intelligent, than others, and also implies it as a complete disability rather than a difference that is at odds with current society. Using words like "retarded" could also create a bad impression that could make it even harder for us on the autistic spectrum to get jobs (and similar) than it already is, though I do believe more in independent work than jobs anyway.

You can portray socialism as some monolithic ideology with only one form, but implying that liberals support it is a bit too silly, as that is a completely different ideology which is opposed to socialism. I would even go as far as saying that claiming Nazis were socialists is more accurate, as they at least pretended to be them.

It has a strong connotation of having less intelligence, however, and people on the spectrum are often not impaired in that, and sometimes are even more intelligent than average. It is also rather insulting to autistic people because it also has a very strong negative connotation in general.

What do "gender people" gain by forcing others to use "their pronouns"? Is this just a power move? by RatherSmallPotato in whatever

[–]happysmash27 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I don't think people should be forced to use certain language; in my opinion this is more of a matter of politeness, and a gender-neutral pronoun is pretty polite in all cases. I've recently read this article by Richard Stallman today, and I have to agree with his point there:

There are those who claim that we have an obligation to refer to someone using whatever pronouns person might choose. I disagree with that position, on grounds of principle and grounds of practice. I think we should respect other people's gender identification, but which pronouns we use for any particular gender identification is a separate matter — a matter of grammar. We do not owe it to anyone to change our grammar according to per wishes.
