It doesn't only pertain to liberals. Managing personal finance is a skill, just like any other life skill. We live in a time of cheap "stuff". The problem, I think, is over consumption, as your meme says. So many people don't understand that marketers are fighting to get you to spend your money on their wares, plus financiers are trying to get you to spend your future money on a lesser amount of their current money. This should be part of the school curriculum.

There are no "Conservatives" in the sense of the original meaning of that term, which addressed Eisenhower conservatives, well into the late 1970s. That's why it made sense to vote for Reagan in 1979. Conservatives were the good guys. They were the response to corrupt yellow dog liberals. After 4 years of Reagan, the Radical Republican was in a position to steal from Social Security, borrow from China, give themselves tax cuts, create Iran/Contra deals, destabilize governments abroad, run up the debt, funnel trillions into the Military Industrial Complex, establish lobbying as a legitimate way of getting money into politics, and many other corrupt developments that continue causing problems today. At last count, the Republican-led government put the US $27 trillion in debt, while also reducing taxes for the 1%. Guess who will pay for it? Wealth has been funneled toward the 1%, from the 99% gradually for the past 30 years, if not longer. What does income inequality to for the 99%. (It causes great suffering.) Who can we thank for this extreme income inequality that puts the US at a similar level as a 3rd world country in economic, educational, retirement, healthcare, environment, and so many other sectors? Radical Republicans. If you're not in the 1%, you're fucked.

What is NPC?

Non Player Character. Originally from Dungeons and Dragons, and commonly used in video games.

As in they're not a real person, ya know. And it's easy to fall into that kind of thinking. To just assume Bob the gas station attendant just exists to sell you gas and doesn't have a meaningful existence outside that role.

It's a mentally unbalanced worldview and although I struggle with it myself, at least I know it's nuts.

Thanks. One would think that one of the Redditors' problems that Saiditors would like to escape is the incessant comparison over there with games and cartoons. After the Digg invasion years ago (2010?), the majority of engagement on Reddit seemed to be at the age of 13. Everything was - and often still is - filtered through cultural infantilism. Shortly after 2010, /r/Politics was removed from /r/all, and one could see that as a sign of things to come - that the news aggregation site where one could discuss politics and world news would become a LULZ site (eg. what's now on /r/all). As for NPC, it makes no sense in a debate. Perhaps it's only meant to be an insult, an ad hominem, albeit unfounded for real-world discussions.

A lot of what determines your political orientation is biological temperament far more than people realize. Leftists are high in a trait called Openness, which is one of the big five personality traits. It's associated with interest in abstraction, interest in aesthetics. It's the best predictor of leftist political leanings and they're low in Conscientiousness which is dutifulness and orderliness in particular. Whereas conservatives are the opposite. They're high in Conscientiousness - dutiful and orderly - and they're low in Openness and that makes them really good at running things, building, and saving money. On the other hand if you love constant novelty it's going to be hard to stop spending money. What, you should stop yourself from feeling good right now?

Another problem is the polarization of the discourse, which helps the most aggressive party.

My main concern is that 'conservatism' (Eg. Eisenhower conservatism) is dead in the US, and that Radical Republicans (and some Dems) have made the US government much more of a profit-making venture, not seen since c. 1900. They're gleaning the 99%.

Thank you for this. Trying to understand the article and other approaches of the Slate Star Codex takes a while, especially because the essay and other associated essays never seem to develop explicit axioms. There is just a continuation of arguments. Among the main points I could grasp, there were some issues that remind me of my reading of Tzvetan Todorov's arguments in the 'National Review' in the 1980s, regarding nationalism, totalitarianism &c. I just wish the author were more explicit and organized. Regarding the 'outgroup', I agree with some of the points about its use as an excuse for some. Traditional terminology for this - by Foucault and others - is to call this outgroup the "other". So if I agree with any of the points about the outgroup, its that the ingroup should be open to its inclusion and the inclusion of the 'other', though without discriminating against the ingroup.

They're normally not considered the 'other' by the left, or by themselves. They are the 'freedom fighters' who want to protect the predominantly white "ingroup" and would not see themselves as part of the "outgroup" which are recent immigrants, blacks, hispanics, LGBTQ+, liberals, commies, kikes, Chinese, &c. That's at least how I've seen the MAGA approaches. They think they're making America American, when in fact every policy and approach during the past 4 years was specifically anti-American. If for example I say an executive order by Trump is UnAmerican or Anti-American, my reference can be to American tradition, rather than to assumptions of an ingroup or outgroup. This isn't "othering" Trump (for exmample), but notes that the policy is itself at odds with our National Identity. Indeed, the policy threatens to disenfranchise many in the US, in that case. This is not about the person, but about the destruction of something essential to the 99%. Would a policy be part of an outgroup? No, seems not. Also this:

We had an afternoon workshop with a tax form. But what is there to know about personal finance? All the information is available online. The most complicated concept is exponential growth in terms of investments and compound interests and maybe percentages in terms of inflation and tax. The most immediate stuff is just addition and subtraction. The rest is self control. People can't do that, won't look up basic information, and then complain about not getting hand held and spoon-fed. If you can't think for yourself, you're going to get fucked over, because nobody else is going to be looking out for your best interest.

I have faith in people. I've had mentors who have helped me along the way and now I'm in a position where I can mentor. There is no handbook that you are given when you pop out of the womb. Finance and numbers don't come easy to a lot of people. That doesn't mean they're lazy. I have a friend who is an accountant and she reads financial statements like the Nebuchadnezzar crew reads code in The Matrix. That is a skill that takes years of education. So, someone who has instant versus delayed gratification tendencies may have trouble learning budgeting or opportunity costs on their own.

I have a friend who is an accountant and she reads financial statements like the Nebuchadnezzar crew reads code in The Matrix.

You don't have to be that good to do basic budgeting and not overspend. I don't even look at my financial statements unless there's a problem. I know the general ballpark of how much I spend per month and make sure to keep it below my paycheck, keep an emergency fund, and send the surplus to my investment portfolio at the end of the month. Is there really all that much more to do?

Regarding businesses, they'd be open by now in much of the country if the government and former President encouraged basic - easy precautions - last year, like masks, tests, social distancing, quarantine &c. On a serious note though, the entertainment value of Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Spotify are excellent and the accounts can be shared among 4 people. It works out to be less than $10 a month for almost unlimited entertainment.

I read a lot too so Kindle Unlimited is a fantastic deal, although apps like Libby make borrowing ebooks from your local library simple and there's openlibrary.org from the internet archive guys.

My comcast cable bill (including internet) was $300 a month before I cut the cord. There just weren't better options until relatively recently, but now there are and it's saving me a ton of money.

I used to work for Blockbuster. People would pay hundreds in late fees routinely. The tapes themselves were paid for after the first rental, the employee wages were from candy and drink sales. That place was a gold mine, they fucked the customers so hard....

Entertainment - yes, but liberal lifestyle in general: no. Starbucks coffee, or an independent but upscale coffee shop, avocado toast, soy milk, i-everything, that stuff is expensive. The liberals habits are very expensive in most cases. They also live (when not in their parents basement) in the trendiest parts of downtowns that are super expensive. Basically, liberals are simply spoiled brats that want everything given to them.

I occasionally feel guilt and insecurity over my financial situation. Then I remember tons of people my age are in 5 figure debt or worse, and suddenly my situation seems pretty okay. A buddy of mine who works for a bank and sees accounts all day long's told me if you've got more than like $700 sitting in your checking account, you're doing better than most.

You can't worry about the past or the future, only the present. As long as you are taking action now, then you are in control. I dug a financial hole for myself and it caused so much stress. It took the joy out of life. It seems manageable as it is happening and then there you are, wondering how you are going to get back out. Determination, hard work, and learning new habits and self-value is the answer and though turns around slowly at first, it will seem "simple" in a few years looking back because you have that much more life experience.

Like every other millennial describes going to different restaurants all the time as their hobby. At least when I grew up, going to a restaurant was a special treat. Especially the sort of restaurants you'd boast about if you call yourself a foodie.

I'm the biggest libtard you'll ever see, and yet I totally get this. My friend is this guy and it pisses me off.

A lot of people like to assume a lot of people online are hypocrites, but I often find that the supposed "hypocrites" they are talking about are actually two separate groups.

I'm not sure whether liberals fall into this category or not though.
