If it's true that some states have completely different opinions about what role government should play in their lives, then the solution is either some light touch federal system where they can decide their own rules, or splitting up completely. If those in power at the state level force their way of life (or lack thereof) on those they despise without their consent, then option 1 isn't really on the table. Who in this situation is being unreasonable?

I suspect there may be people within "urbandictionary" pruning top entries. It could also be that there are activist types outside of that company abusing the report system. I suspect that "urbandictionary" are vulnerable to attack by lawyers, maybe angling for a big buyout (i haven't looked into who owns them), and erring on the side of caution. It is concerning that a website ostensibly documenting the usage of language by the general population is, by such pruning, lying about it. I know the regular dictionary does it, but if anything this is more objectionable because the claim is that it is documented and voted for by non-expert users. It's sad that in future, people likely won't understand what our time was actually like. This is nothing new I suppose, but the hope was that we now had the technology to document our reality. Turns out technology can also be used to better fabricate lies!

According to TheDonald.win, the numbers of the election in Milwaukee are not following the Benford's Law. Is this a sign of fraud? by shakadevirgem in politics

[–]filbs111 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

depends what the actual distribution of the whole numbers (not just leading digit) looks like. The "Benford's Law" distribution for leading digits would be expected for distributions with uniformly distributed logarithm over some orders of magnitude. For more narrow distributions, it shouldn't hold.

In the event that these numbers are, say, the number of voters per geographic zone, and these zones are similar in number of total voters, and the voting habits in each zone don't vary a lot, it makes sense for the less popular candidates to more closely follow Benford's law, because the number of votes is smaller and proportionally more random. Errors add in quadrature etc.

Does anyone have the data that was used to produce this? I'd be interested to take a look!

Often there are rules against incitement to violence, and this seems quite reasonable, the idea being a third party might be motivated by the first party to commit an act of violence against the second, against the second party's consent.

However, inviting someone to kill themselves doesn't have the same problem. If someone kills themselves, it is done with their own consent.

If "brainsex" is legitimate proof of gender, then the fact that neurologists can easily sex the brains of trans-women must be proof that trans-women are men. [–]filbs111 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

There are properties of the brain that correlate with a person's sex, and where people can be sex atypical*. It wouldn't surprise me if some of such properties were influenced by, say, testosterone levels during brain development, and that the less-hairy men that make more convincing transvestites, and gay men, are by such measures, on average, more womanly than other men.

That said, it would be interesting to see whether members of "the community" would be willing to accept the negative test results of some of their number, as the price of affirmation for the rest. For the selfish, whether they'd be OK with this would be down to their individual diagnosis.

* for example volume. don't shoot the messenger. it's what you do with it that counts!

This is more complicated than I initially expected. IMO I'm well meaning, but think both sexual preference and genital preference terms makes sense, and there should be no shame in having such preferences. People should be able to refuse sex with others for any reason or no reason at all.

Regarding restaurants and food, I am offered two plates of food, plate A being my favourite food, and plate B contains something dreadful. To say "I prefer plate A over plate B" is factually correct, though misleading if said in response to the question "what do you want for dinner".

Hmm. Perhaps this is a USA thing. In the UK at least, (AFAICT), sexual preference refers to who you prefer to have sexual relations with, and where, if you state a preference for a over b, doesn't mean you would necessarily appreciate b as a second choice. Example: I would prefer to win the lottery than to be flayed!

didn't even have posts aside from posts for testing css

When you assume, etc.

Given the OP : "didn't even have posts aside from posts for testing css", it's not clear which rule was broken, and why.

Interesting. Some kind of transparency about which rules were broken would be an improvement over this situation.

If you are already spending time on reddit, and you see posts from people who are having a hard time with the atmosphere on reddit and would have a better time of it here, try messaging them to let them know what the alternatives are. If you want to be more proactive, note that you can use removeddit to see deleted comments. This is a quick way to find messages from people who might want to hear! For example, https://www.removeddit.com/r/PCOS/comments/hmlhjc/rpcos_is_an_inclusive_community/

In a way it is "hiding away", but when the hiding place is a bustling and pleasant community, more people will find it by word of mouth etc. Many people only put up with toxic environments of reddit, twitter et al, because of the amount of traffic they receive.

Poorly phrased question. What is "expect" in this context? Do i expect to get run over if I cross the motorway blindfolded? Yes. Do I want to get run over? No. I expect tech companies to do political grandstanding. I don't want them to.

It could also be that tech people are more savvy about their wrongthink possibly being used against them and suspect their honesty might get them blacklisted.

The "are traps gay" question is funny though. It runs into the whole mess of "sexuality", sex and whatever "gender" is supposed to mean this week. It's probably true that a large fraction of "straight" men are attracted to the top 0.1% of traps. If you were to go to a "pride" rally and state that you were a "B" because you get a rise out of both women and particularly deceptive shemales, you'd get lynched, which makes it funny.

This "gupi" guy seems like an douche, but being an douche these days can be good for business. For one thing, partisans with pronouns will support him because of this. The idea of blocking people from something you post to everyone else for free is nasty, but the idea that someone might want to control who their fans are, or at least, who they appear to be, has merit. If he's doing some music concert, people might want to go to meet people "like them". They might want to buy a T-shirt to signal that they like their brand. This is partly why people like Pewdiepie.

I don't mind a bit of porn. I understand saidit, and many of the newer "free speech" platforms don't allow porn, which many see as hypocritical, but it's a pragmatic decision. For one thing, there are those that wish to see political speech shut down, and will use pornography as a tool to this end. I understand reddit's "Against Hate Subreddits" ("AHS") group has been known to post highly illegal pornography on reddit subs they didn't like, in order to get those subs shut down.

If a site has a policy that pornography is prohibited, and demonstrates enforcement of this policy, it's much harder to attack them using the media and law. If a site's policy is that porn is OK provided it's legal, this has a huge moderation cost, and then when someone posts illegal content, it's easier for those who wish to take the site down to claim that the site admins were turning a blind eye. Also, I suspect that much of the porn on sites like reddit is technically illegal (2257 regulations etc), but is tolerated because big orgs like reddit, mindgeek etc are "in bed with" the government...

In an ideal world, what would I want Saidit to be? Would I want to have porn and discussion in the same place? Sort of. This should be a goal of decentralised/federated services, and the internet as a whole. However, what is saidit as it stands? A bunch of subs, and a front page. Having porn on the same site would be handy because it might mean fewer logins. However, it's useful for a front page to be some sort of a "safe space" where people have informed expectations of what they're likely to see there. I like the idea that sex clubs exist, but also like the idea that a person should be able to walk down the street without seeing people fucking.
