Terrific ideas. Other new indie platforms out there are doing similar things.

Unfortunately we don't have coders or startup angel funding to pay some.

Perhaps we can rig some kind of work around if it's not built in to whatever code is available.

Yes, you pay to lock in your alias, and have a record of your comments/votes. Essentially payment allows for all "account" features.

It's like club fees for members, but everyone would feel good building their club together. Small payment also encourages usage ("well I'm paying for it, might as well use it!")

Yes as a business model, but not for profiteering, simply for covering costs associated with keeping it running. Maybe there is an "open wallet", or blockchain type ledger that shows complete account transactions.

Voting and algorithm by la_cues in Cassy

[–]JasonCarswell 2 insightful - 3 fun2 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

I agree.

Also, I don't like that currently "insightful" gets 2 points and "fun" gets 1 point - and both go to the same total. It might be better they were both 1 and you could chose one or the other.

People, myself included, will vote both to give it all 3 points in order to boost it. I do it to other peoples content more than my own and I've often done this my new posts for the first hour or two, then remove the "fun" vote if it's not appropriate.

The new Reddit-like forum, if/when it ever comes, will not be like SaidIt. Lemmy is currently the best option. It would take some serious work to rework the either up/down into either deep/shallow or heavy/light (alternative terms to your good new idea (wish I'd thought of it)). We are unable to do any serious work to Lemmy at this time.

I agree that quality is important. I think having metatags would be huge with much sorting potential. However one big problem is lazy people not bothering to do their metatags or vote properly, especially with a complex system.

Your algorithmic sorting is very much along the lines of what I was thinking for my MetaVote post in /s/PhoenixForum.

Building on your quality/fun idea, it would be nice if users had a slider with 0 to 100% so you could adjust the "mix" in your feed towards one or the other or balanced as your mood dictates.

I don't fully understand but I'm assuming you're proposing this as a business model.

Wikipedia doesn't charge but you can use your account or be anonymous but they still record your IP number, even if it's through VPN or whatever.

I'm assuming you mean there would be endless "anons" chiming in to a big smear of good, bad, and ugly from a anon-hive-voice, but folks could pay to have their name or alias.

But then is there a way to "decentralize" any potential profits or funds in excess of costs?

I'm not sure what you mean exactly.

Here's the plan: 100% open transparent accounting (income, expenses, savings, outgoing), all on the wiki we're building, coming soon at https://Projex.wiki. (The wikis that we've already set up will be for internal use and testing.) Further, how all these funds are managed and their goals will be 100% openly discussed in the /s/GlossedAndProfound online production management cooperative.

[–]JasonCarswell 3 insightful - 3 fun3 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 3 fun -  (0 children)

Yes. This is more of a /s/PhoenixForum idea for the future.

I've considered how nice it would be that every Original Poster would be the Moderator of their Original Posts - AND - that they would get notified for every single comment in discussions made under them, not just the responses directly to their post or comments. A lot gets missed in a thread if you only check your inbox and manually checking long discussions manually is tedious. Another option would be to have an indicator "new since you were here last".

FYI: SaidIt features 3 mobile page view formats for small & narrow screens:

  • m.SaidIt.net - LARGE display
  • SaidIt.net/.compact - old minimal Reddit-style
  • SaidIt.net/s/SaidIt/.mobile?keep_extension=true - CAUTION: depreciated janky code. This is Reddit's first mobile bare-bones style in the old opensource code. This format is for oldskool geex and fans of interwebs history

Yes the crypto is a heavy influence. IMO it makes more sense to have crypto as a modular option on the side. That keeps your forum at arms length from all the pros and cons of being a bank/exchange/business/antiauthoritarian/etc. Plug in the module or don't. Swap it out, add more or less or whatever. Or make the crypto a browser addon. There are solutions.

For our Lemmy instance we're going to embrace the simplicity and hope folks might build modular stuff for it - assuming it gains any traction.

I appreciated the discourse here and similar happens on discussions.

Likewise. Keep coming back with updates. I'll try to peek in on discussions occasionally. All I saw were memes on a phone GUI. I can only guess that if I create an account I might get access to change preferences.

Thanks for the conversation ! Yes I agree with old reddit style except maybe on mobile as I type this on a mobile. It really is ironic discussions gui as they did just redo it and a push was made for old reddit style before but it never got there. They have talked of ipfs before but are now talking about dstor. The guys behind discussions are all heavily into the crypto world so they always lean that way. Maybe it blinds them but on the other side the tech world leans away from crypto because they view it as just scams which it much is. Thing is most in crypto have recognized value in the tech, but maybe too much.

Matrix just got a huge investment, 30million, and is talking about many interesting things.

I really just want to see a better future on the net. Discussions aligns with what I think that is. Not perfectly but its evolving, this is hard.

That would be nice if it were true. I really hope it is. You're a good salesman, but the proof is in the results.

Obviously I can't speak for everyone here, but I can say that I suspect others like me would be willing to give DA at least a try if it met some fundamental conditions. Top of my list is the GUI. The Reddit-like forum interface has its pros and cons and all the regulars here are at least accustomed to it, even if some may have issues with it. If you could mimic that well enough, then you'd not only have folks from SaidIt checking you out, but many on the List of Active Saidit Alternatives 2.0 checking you out. If that impresses folks then they may or may not want to have their old data exported/imported securely somehow. It might be too much to hope for some way to

Blockchain, sharding, torrent, IPFS, Holochain (vaporware?), TOR, ZeroNet, I2P, FreeNet, whatever. By any and all means if possible.

I should have thought of this yesterday. /u/fschmidt may be interested in all of this. He's often a disagreeable curmudgeon and said he has blocked me so he may not see this, so you may need to beacon him yourself, and he may need to unblock me to read me. He was offering to pay $2K a month for legit forum development. I don't know what his requirements are and I don't know if DA counts in his books, but if it does, perhaps you can spend that $2K on hiring some GUI development.

After 9/11 I may be able to help with GUI design (I don't code), but until then I'm focused on making some videos.

Alt tech is suffering from too many options.

Yes and no.

I forget the name but it was an alt-universal-login, as you do with Google or Facebook. I guess it's like the Fediverse in that you can use your ID everywhere - but it's not so limited in bubbles. I love this idea and would hope it might be one of the solutions we need. I would have tried to remember it if I'd realized it at the time.

Another thing is bridging. When we get Lemmy up the goal is to mirror the SaidIt content somehow. And to have ways to cross over to WikiSpooks, InfoGalactic, and GiraffeIdeas.wiki and back. There are many ideas and ways.

Saidit is a group of users, but what if you disagreed with saidit and wanted to do things a little different? What if you could fork saidit keeping the same users and content with your differences to them while still connected to the old saidit?

THAT is the ultimate goal. And it's also how this all got started. magnora7 is the owner of SaidIt.net but many of us want a more fair social management system and/or actual leadership and goals. That's what spawned /s/PhoenixForum and /s/Cassy.

We are in a competition against big tech and platforms need a certain threshold of users to be viable and that gets even bigger the more diverse the topics you want, say hobbies etc.

Alt tech is suffering from too many options. My thinking is can there be a way to bring the many platforms and users together but allow them there original independance mostly. With the joined platforms barriers will reduce and more people share in common content.

Federation can work but there is a better way. Which is content becomes common property available to anyone, and its the users or the groups of users that decide how they want to use the content. Saidit is a group of users, but what if you disagreed with saidit and wanted to do things a little different? What if you could fork saidit keeping the same users and content with your differences to them while still connected to the old saidit?

In fact, it might survive even that. The IP address changes, but with Tor you don't configure your site to be hosted on a specific IP address (because of course you're trying to obscure it). It should simply connect to the again when the router is back up, and then it'll be hosted on the same address. It's something we can test, though.

That's a good idea. Let us bow our heads and give thanks. Thank you O Saidit for these shitposts and conspiracies.

Although this is for Cassy, nobody wants to steal m7's thing even if he wasn't there.

I think we might get in trouble for tax evasion if we made a fake religion, Scientology had a hard time getting around that.

You remember how to incorporate or know how to be a non profit?

I don't know how you've been banned twice on saidit, when saidit is one of the few sites I haven't been banned from. Reddit, daily stormer, youtube, and liveleak. Even gardenweb, way back. They all somehow failed to appreciate my insightful insights!

I want to start a Truth-Seeker cult/religion/political party

Religion or some type of non-profit will be your least taxing route. Taxing, as in both financial and the amount of ongoing effort to maintain.

I used to do corporations, but quit all that before 9/11 happened. Laws changed drastically after their little airplane stunt.

I did corporations in my time, because LLCs weren't really a thing then.

I take it that is your phpBB centralized forum. We still don't have a decentralized forum for us, our community, Lenny or otherwise.

You'll need to share MUCH more about this "grand opening" of your forum on my box with me before you do any such thing. I need to know 100% what's going on on my gear in my home.

I've been exceptionally verbose and precise about my needs, wants, and goals, yet I feel completely in the dark about most of this and think you're jumping the gun here in a big way with your side project.

Feel free to use /s/Cassy/wiki to lay down your ideas for me/us to see - or better, help me get the projects wiki online..

You may very well be correct. IMO, it's worth trying. If it's a little better that's great.

It wont work and it is not better. We need a system that give the power to the user and not to the users, but to the individual user. Any system where you grant power over the users, can be attacked by killing that person and taking control- which is something leftists would do, make no mistake about that, if the site became popular. Any system where the majority of users need to proactively deal with censorship against those in power will not work, because censorship removes the voice of those that are the victims of it, leaving the majority of users unaware and the few that notice some of it, think it is not widespread or important enough to do anything about, and if they do speak up, those few can be added to the list of silenced voices. This is how r/Denmark has operated for several years. Their methods of censorship is like this: - Downvote posts in /new that they do not like to 0 through mass downvotes, so that it never is seen by the masses.
- Downvote comments that they do not like so that the majority do not see those comments.
- Forum slide a post with 25 new posts, so that the disliked topic is pushed off /new page 1
- Derail a post that they do not like by commenting and changing the topic of the post.
- Derail a popular comment by hijacking it and talk about something unrelated.
- Ban active right wing users that get upvotes. Active is the important part. You can be right wing as long as you aren't active or get visibility, which means most right wingers aren't directly impacted.
- Add rules that punish the behaviour of those that you do not like. - Enforce rules one sided, allow users to "appeal" wrong decisions - Ban the mention of competing subs with less biased moderation.
- Act as if you are unbiased by using vague language that everyone can agree with.

I probably forgot some. These are the things that needs to be impossible in a perfect system. The best example was when the most popular and active user u/maktone got banned 6 months before the election, despite him following every single rule. Then they added a rule called "Agenda Pushing" and he asked them what he must do to avoid getting banned from this rule, to which they replied that he had to be active in many different topics, which he then did and after a month, they banned him anyway, using that new rule. The users were in uproar and a couple new subs were created in protest, but mentioning were banned making the switch very hard, and half the users that were triggered by maktone didn't care enough to make the switch regardless, because while they thought it was wrong to do, they were still happy that it was done.

Old-leftists, authentic progressives, anarcho-socialist are not problematic and likely have more in common with you

I don't see them as leftists. Leftists are those that are narcicists, hypocritical, and bootlickers. stupidpol and the likes aren't leftists - the fact that they consider themselves leftists shows how uninformed they are about politics. NeoCons are leftists too. If i'm not wrong, neocons even stem from trotskyism or something.

Lol, have you seen how Saidit has been under attack after we joined the website?

You're not a victim and the attacks are not unique to your experience. Truth-seekers across the spectrum are demonized and often called Alt-Right whether they are or not. It's an easy label for the normies and it avoids dealing with the ugly truths that they're trying to suppress, regardless of ideologies.

This is not good enough to stop leftist censorship.

You may very well be correct. IMO, it's worth trying. If it's a little better that's great. If we can improve on that with new ideas that's even better. Doing nothing is unacceptable, IMO.

However you want to frame it as long as leftists can't gain power to censor me

IMO, you should try to be more clear about what kind of leftists you dislike. SJWs, Democrats, fake-progressives, and commies are all VERY problematic. Old-leftists, authentic progressives, anarcho-socialist are not problematic and likely have more in common with you than you do with the GOP and NeoCon Zionist totalitarians.

or limit my visibility or in other ways disadvantage me compared to everyone else.

You're NOT a victim. You're the only one from your community obtuse and still bitching about this. The Iron Left was also removed from /s/All.

On SaidIt, no.

Lol, have you seen how Saidit has been under attack after we joined the website?

Trusted-team and/or admins are accountable to the site owner(s) and IMO should be openly challenged and held accountable by the community in line with the stated manifestos, constitutions, goals, and the foundations that will anchor all discourse as initially laid out by the site owner. If the community doesn't like the mission statement they can leave and start their own.

This is not good enough to stop leftist censorship.

This is the problem WE need to fix: How to make it impossible for extremists and normies to impose their will on the users

It is not about civility.

Yes it is. Civil people don't need rules.

It is about that leftist don't want us to expose their lies

Out there, yes. On SaidIt, no. Playing the victim here doesn't fly.

so if we have a platform they will use millions of dollars trying to stop that in any way that they can and they are very creative. One of those ways is gaining admin power through infiltration or other means.

Infiltration is a tale as old as time.

That's a novel interesting twist.

If I understand you correctly:
If you choose your own "leader(s)" then you are held responsible to them and their standards. If there's a greater problem with one or more individuals under their supervision then the problematic individual(s) and leaders in question might be held accountable (whatever that means) and the other folks under their supervision may need to find new moderators.

I don't like hierarchy but recognize it's often necessary. I don't like my terms here. Leader, mentor, supervisor, etc. I could spend forever trying to find alternative terms to adopt but I don't care that much. I just wish everyone could behave civilly without need for any of this.

This looks solid but I don't think that saidit or a similar site should be issuing a new currency/asset. Instead we should be trading something cheap but established with each other, like doge or ETH or another big one. I like the tipping idea too but I'm out of the loop as to the best way to go about that.

An open fair hearing with my trusted-team is not perfect but it's better than an arbitrary judgement from some secretive dictator with an ego.

Better than you coming to my platform would be for all of us to build our own decentralized platforms and federate them. You decide what you want on your server, with or without your own trusted-team, and I decide what I want on mine, etc. We can share the stuff we have in common and omit the unwanted. That's how the federation works.

The SJWs take it to an entirely different level (even more extreme than your intolerance) and have cleaved the Mastodon federation with cancel culture. I'm not sure if there can ever be any solution to this, and if Lemmy doesn't interact with Lenny then it's essentially the same thing. Regardless, getting decentralized is critically important and figuring out how to resolve intolerance division is of secondary concern. (For fuck sakes, if they can make an advanced FLOSS app like Blender, then we can surely build some decent filters in a forum with some decent database analysis that doesn't just serve the deep state surveillance and control system.)

It all has to start somewhere. I suspect this project would work even better if there were a few of us that were co-starting our own servers. We can consult each other and help get things running, tweak the software, etc.

The left already has Lemmy (including censorship of some words). Centrists and the right (and non-SJW left) folks need to embrace Lenny (uncensored) or be left floundering when they (ICAAN) start taking down centralized Internet sites.

Just so we're clear. You are not a leftist from my perspective.

That's good. I don't consider myself left. I'm voluntarist and don't buy into the left-right paradigm. I used to be left-ish and still consider myself old-left true-progressive (like Jimmy Dore) on many things (very different than SJW fake-progressives and Dems). I like the Green and Libertarian parties, if I must choose to protest vote against the dominant establishment.

I don't know what you mean by this but I cannot collaborate with leftists who wants to silence me.

Can you pay rent in the same building as leftists? Same thing.

Anyone who wants on the platform I help make will be there for free-thought. That means rational discourse without censorship. Juvenile free speech idiots and STABs will be kicked off/censored until we can build filters so no one will need to be censored other than criminals (breaking laws). Essentially just like SaidIt, except that issues will be dealt with by a trusted-team instead of by one admin in secret. People will have the freedom to ask for others to be silenced all they want but no one will be silenced in silence without a fair hearing. The irrational may waste their breath calling for silencing and if they waste our time may be dealt with or filtered.

There is leadership. It is garbage but it is currently silencing s/DAR from s/all

The community is limited not silenced.

Admins destroyed the alt right through censorship, not the moderators.

This will not end. In a way it's a good thing. It's forcing us to find decentralized alternatives. The idea that everyone can host their own instance free of the corporatocracy cloud is the end goal. Not everyone will want to host edgy, fringe, or political content - yet some will be free to.

The left exists here on SaidIt

Just so we're clear. You are not a leftist from my perspective.

IMO, it makes more sense to survive by being smart, collaborating to conserve, fortify what we share in common, and agree to disagree on the minor trivialities under the Zionist corporatocracy oppression (which includes the GOP, NeoCons, Christian Zionists, etc) as capitalism and communism merge into global totalitarianism.

I don't know what you mean by this but I cannot collaborate with leftists who wants to silence me.

I've been called a troll plenty of times, a shill just yesterday. Not that there really aren't trolls and shills, but it's often used to justify silencing points of views the moderator doesn't agree with or to quash any threats to their power.

A good mod is invaluable, unfortunately they're rare.

Moderators suck on reddit because the site got so large that moderators who were modding as a part time hobby got tapped by corporate reddit to help spread the political messages of reddit. Moderators that didn't buy in were forced out and many new fake bought and paid for mods were put in charge of large influential communities. This wouldn't have been a problem if people could make competing communities but many of those communities were kicked off of reddit. In general though a community essentially gets the mods it deserves. Good faith mods do a lot of good things. They keep off trolls. The can quickly identify people breaking rules. They can identify people shilling products or ideas that don't fit the spirit of the sub.

This does sound neat. Most of it is Greek to me. Crypto on a forum scares me. Steemit sucked primarily for that reason. There were a few other minor reasons too, but nothing so obvious or major. Besides not being a linux, forum, or crypto admin guy, I would also hate to have some kind of scam happen on my gear, accidentally or not. Yet, crypto seems among the only ways forward. Were I/we to adopt some crypto thing I would want to decentralize it somehow. For example, have enough on the forum to manage in day to day or week to week affairs, and keep the rest in several different external places (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.), perhaps entrusted under different people too. A nice problem to have.
