What do you know about truth, perpetual liar?

Your extreme exaggerations of my "camp outs" are beyond overblown. I have no shortage of historical proof and evidence I can share showing that I was never dominating chat as you repeatedly lie. Yes, sometimes I was OP. Rarely did I ever do anything with it. Often I gave it away. And often you Cunts abused it.

Usher is a Cunt too, likely a fed. He has no justification for squatting on the chat controls now. Censorship is only ever the tool of tyrants. Cry harder liar about tyranny and being victims as you abuse your stolen powers as a gang of Cunts. Sure you're not from that tribe?

How about you do something good for the SaidIt community for once? Maybe fuck off for a while.

That is a blatant distortion of the truth. You had previously camped on both main chats to pre-ban the people you didn't like. You and Ed's spam are the entire reason Usher has control of chat now.

And chat is better. You were the petty tyrant we were getting rid of. Usher does a pretty good job. For all your lies and worm behavior, you have only been banned twice from chat. Which you have the gall to snivel about when you used to preban users every reset.

You sicken me these days, you know exactly what you did, and here you are misrepresenting the truth and calling for u/Magnora7 to intervene on your behalf.

For years we've been discussing FOTPACH ethical self-regulating social media management, as well as self-regulating communities, and creating open-source templates (akin to Creative Commons licenses) so that others may easily emulate and users can clearly understand - all starting with being open.

The idea of FOTPATCH ethical management (fair, open, transparent, peaceful, accountable, consistent, honest) was developed through struggles to open magnora7's SaidIt management, and FOTPACH has become a simple concept to apply to any management, such as organizing our Windsor Freedom Rallies or what we want from local election candidates or national governments (good luck with that).

The goals and essence of FOTPACH is manifesting bottom-up self-regulating communities rather than settling for top-down dictates.

I wouldn't build a house on a foundation of dog shit. Everything produced by modern culture is shit and should be rejected. There are good older protocols like NNTP but they address the conditions of that time, and things have changed. The internet has become much faster which makes possible radically simpler approaches. Anyway, I don't see any real demand for a good free speech platform (and protocol) so I will just forget it.

I finished coding my Mercurial hosting service this week which will serve the 5 to 10 good programmers left in the world who I care about far more than the 8 billion scum.

Lemmy federation in action? by JasonCarswell in Cassy

[–]JasonCarswell[S] 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

All of that sounds very rational. It's inspired a thought. What if, rather than rebuild a forum or start from scratch, you only work on the following things to create a "universal protocol module". Master that first, then be able to use it as your foundation to begin a forum later, with all the support you'd want.

Select an existing protocol, tweak it, fork it, and/or just design a new decentralization protocol as necessary.

Build just the decentralization module with adjustable settings to interface with existing forum platforms that would input/output from their databases, manage federated networking, and have maintenance tools and options. Also, build in room for many extra channels/settings to come in the future (ie. metatags and metadata).

Improve this "new protocol module" to be able to also deal with the half dozen other decentralization protocols. Also build extensions for this module allowing various existing forum platforms to plug in. This would not only make it the "universal adapter" but this would be the foot in the door to...

Become the best decentralization protocol module.

By providing equalizing tools you can directly set up federated forum fairness (rather than federated servers) to prolifically succeed.

IMO, decentralization is the most important part of everything we need to resist tyranny. That's why I think we'd need to fix that first.

Lemmy is what it is, but sharing the federation is a simpler GUI in Lotide (https://sr.ht/~vpzom/lotide/) which may be easier to start rebuilding from. I don't know if it's better or worse for your purposes.

Perhaps sharding databases (as with Ethereum, blockchains, torrents, etc) might help too.

I've only heard of these concepts to be able to mash and present them, so I don't know if any of this is obvious, impractical, or maybe even useful.

Lemmy federation in action? by JasonCarswell in Cassy

[–]fschmidt 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Okay, I see federation in action. It works but it sucks. The Lemmy documentation explains the problem. Federation is off by default and will mostly be used with an Allowlist. This will result in minimum actual federation. The way federation really should work by federating the closure (in the math sense) of the Allowlist minus the BlockList. This would produce much bigger federation sets.

I also hate the idea of federation at the server level instead of the forum level. Server owners should have almost no power, only to remove forums. Otherwise server owner will naturally become fascists, as is human nature when people are given too much power. Forums (subs) should federate, and the server shouldn't matter.

Also it looks like federation is done by cloning data across servers (like NNTP does). This is a mess to maintain. No wonder ActivityPub is such a mess. Much simpler is just to query across servers as needed in real time using map-reduce and maybe a little caching.

In conclusion, Lemmy sucks but there is nothing better, so I guess it is the place to start.

Obviously this is just brainstorming on ideas, without making anything concrete.

I just thought of two other ways to try to explain the unstated, now stated, potential-goal of having one as a more serious site - not just without trolls but potentially minimizing the "fun" (like memes, humour, and other distractions) in order to be productive in resisting tyranny with alternatives and solutions.

The Wild .Party is for fun and free speech.
The Crusty .Club is for serious analysis without time-suckage.
Maybe in the future a 3rd middle ground could be .Social or something.
This is a filtration system.

20+ years ago, before Web 2.0 and all this, we used to communicate via email lists. Groups for animation, Burning Man, and endless other interests. Often these groups would have several lists, usually a few at minimum: Announcements/Calendar, Topical, and Social. If you need critical info you don't need to sort through endless reams of shit (ie. chaotic unorganized Facebook/Messenger) because you know exactly where to look. Similarly if you post some shit about your kid's soccer practice in Announcements/Calendar you'll be banned for noise. "Take it to social," or something to that effect, was commonly repeated in Topical discussions.

Maybe organizing the chaos is just wishful thinking.

Thanks! So much yet to learn.

I like that there are at several Friendica, Lotide, Lemmy, and misc instances. I asked at least twice on Friendevu if it was based on Friendica but got no answer. Next time I'll ask the founder directly. I don't think they're into sharing, perhaps wisely as they have some crypto and market stuff.

It seems like it might be nice to see where the OP originates in the federation, just as you've got the [title], [user poster], and [website]. Even a linked favicon would suffice. Perhaps few would care, but IMO it would certainly promote awareness about decentralization in general as well as awareness of the alt-instances. It would be handy to know where to go if one goes down.

I appreciate you sharing them with me, but the point of Projex.Wiki, when we open it up, is that we all use it, organize it, and share it. We also hope to eventually add/integrate a decentralized search engine (YaCy) and web-scraping/archival system (undetermined). Also, I think the content you shared and share is actually more suited for adding to WikiSpooks and InfoGalactic (of which I'm somehow a useless admin), though we will always welcomed mirrored articles on Projex.Wiki. Robin of WS will also admin PW and I can try to talk with the IG guys about developing some auto-synching of content across the three wikis (and maybe more) - plus, ex-co-founder of Wikipedia, Larry Sanger (who liked my ideas), is developing the global Encyclosphere and that team may be able to help, or offer better solutions.

Cassandra Team needs your help: We seek the best Virtual Private Servers (VPS) and/or Proxy services available. by JasonCarswell in Cassy

[–]jamesK_3rd 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

So, I saw your post here when you posted a link. Here is what I have used in the past:

I'm not sure there is a "best". There's definitely better, but you have to look at use case, threat model, etc. Prgmr did lose two of it's devs a few years ago, but I've heard they're still fairly solid, so I'm not sure what is going on.

In addition to the above, I'd also recommend a DIY solution. You can get a business grade internet, I have 150up/150down (you don't have to but then you have low upload speeds and have to deal with not having a permanent IP).

Then, build a server or two and stuff them in your basement or a cool closet. They can then be either mirrors of the front facing websites, or they can host or provide services themselves.

You give up a duck ton of autonomy when you use someone else to house your stuff.

You can run a lot of services on your own server(xmpp or matrix, I run xmpp). Websites, IRC or a closed source alternative like discord. You can run federated Facebook or Twitter like services from your own server as well.

A server in your domicile gives you generally the most protection in the USA from govt entities. Although now, they can hold you or your equipment indefinitely, no one can compel you to unencrypt it, whereas a VPS may or may not comply. Encryption on a VPS has it's own issues.

DDoS is certainly an issue, but I generally think services like Cloudflare etc have generally become gatekeepers when you only fear a DDoS, not other actors. I think that's dangerous.

Terrific ideas. Other new indie platforms out there are doing similar things.

Unfortunately we don't have coders or startup angel funding to pay some.

Perhaps we can rig some kind of work around if it's not built in to whatever code is available.

Yes, you pay to lock in your alias, and have a record of your comments/votes. Essentially payment allows for all "account" features.

It's like club fees for members, but everyone would feel good building their club together. Small payment also encourages usage ("well I'm paying for it, might as well use it!")

Yes as a business model, but not for profiteering, simply for covering costs associated with keeping it running. Maybe there is an "open wallet", or blockchain type ledger that shows complete account transactions.

I agree.

Also, I don't like that currently "insightful" gets 2 points and "fun" gets 1 point - and both go to the same total. It might be better they were both 1 and you could chose one or the other.

People, myself included, will vote both to give it all 3 points in order to boost it. I do it to other peoples content more than my own and I've often done this my new posts for the first hour or two, then remove the "fun" vote if it's not appropriate.

The new Reddit-like forum, if/when it ever comes, will not be like SaidIt. Lemmy is currently the best option. It would take some serious work to rework the either up/down into either deep/shallow or heavy/light (alternative terms to your good new idea (wish I'd thought of it)). We are unable to do any serious work to Lemmy at this time.

I agree that quality is important. I think having metatags would be huge with much sorting potential. However one big problem is lazy people not bothering to do their metatags or vote properly, especially with a complex system.

Your algorithmic sorting is very much along the lines of what I was thinking for my MetaVote post in /s/PhoenixForum.

Building on your quality/fun idea, it would be nice if users had a slider with 0 to 100% so you could adjust the "mix" in your feed towards one or the other or balanced as your mood dictates.

I don't fully understand but I'm assuming you're proposing this as a business model.

Wikipedia doesn't charge but you can use your account or be anonymous but they still record your IP number, even if it's through VPN or whatever.

I'm assuming you mean there would be endless "anons" chiming in to a big smear of good, bad, and ugly from a anon-hive-voice, but folks could pay to have their name or alias.

But then is there a way to "decentralize" any potential profits or funds in excess of costs?

I'm not sure what you mean exactly.

Here's the plan: 100% open transparent accounting (income, expenses, savings, outgoing), all on the wiki we're building, coming soon at https://Projex.wiki. (The wikis that we've already set up will be for internal use and testing.) Further, how all these funds are managed and their goals will be 100% openly discussed in the /s/GlossedAndProfound online production management cooperative.

Yes. This is more of a /s/PhoenixForum idea for the future.

I've considered how nice it would be that every Original Poster would be the Moderator of their Original Posts - AND - that they would get notified for every single comment in discussions made under them, not just the responses directly to their post or comments. A lot gets missed in a thread if you only check your inbox and manually checking long discussions manually is tedious. Another option would be to have an indicator "new since you were here last".

You should get on matrix and join some of the rooms there like redencentralize.

FYI: SaidIt features 3 mobile page view formats for small & narrow screens:

  • m.SaidIt.net - LARGE display
  • SaidIt.net/.compact - old minimal Reddit-style
  • SaidIt.net/s/SaidIt/.mobile?keep_extension=true - CAUTION: depreciated janky code. This is Reddit's first mobile bare-bones style in the old opensource code. This format is for oldskool geex and fans of interwebs history

Yes the crypto is a heavy influence. IMO it makes more sense to have crypto as a modular option on the side. That keeps your forum at arms length from all the pros and cons of being a bank/exchange/business/antiauthoritarian/etc. Plug in the module or don't. Swap it out, add more or less or whatever. Or make the crypto a browser addon. There are solutions.

For our Lemmy instance we're going to embrace the simplicity and hope folks might build modular stuff for it - assuming it gains any traction.

I appreciated the discourse here and similar happens on discussions.

Likewise. Keep coming back with updates. I'll try to peek in on discussions occasionally. All I saw were memes on a phone GUI. I can only guess that if I create an account I might get access to change preferences.

Thanks for the conversation ! Yes I agree with old reddit style except maybe on mobile as I type this on a mobile. It really is ironic discussions gui as they did just redo it and a push was made for old reddit style before but it never got there. They have talked of ipfs before but are now talking about dstor. The guys behind discussions are all heavily into the crypto world so they always lean that way. Maybe it blinds them but on the other side the tech world leans away from crypto because they view it as just scams which it much is. Thing is most in crypto have recognized value in the tech, but maybe too much.

Matrix just got a huge investment, 30million, and is talking about many interesting things.

I really just want to see a better future on the net. Discussions aligns with what I think that is. Not perfectly but its evolving, this is hard.

I appreciated the discourse here and similar happens on discussions. I will contact that user you mentioned.

That would be nice if it were true. I really hope it is. You're a good salesman, but the proof is in the results.

Obviously I can't speak for everyone here, but I can say that I suspect others like me would be willing to give DA at least a try if it met some fundamental conditions. Top of my list is the GUI. The Reddit-like forum interface has its pros and cons and all the regulars here are at least accustomed to it, even if some may have issues with it. If you could mimic that well enough, then you'd not only have folks from SaidIt checking you out, but many on the List of Active Saidit Alternatives 2.0 checking you out. If that impresses folks then they may or may not want to have their old data exported/imported securely somehow. It might be too much to hope for some way to

Blockchain, sharding, torrent, IPFS, Holochain (vaporware?), TOR, ZeroNet, I2P, FreeNet, whatever. By any and all means if possible.

I should have thought of this yesterday. /u/fschmidt may be interested in all of this. He's often a disagreeable curmudgeon and said he has blocked me so he may not see this, so you may need to beacon him yourself, and he may need to unblock me to read me. He was offering to pay $2K a month for legit forum development. I don't know what his requirements are and I don't know if DA counts in his books, but if it does, perhaps you can spend that $2K on hiring some GUI development.

After 9/11 I may be able to help with GUI design (I don't code), but until then I'm focused on making some videos.

Alt tech is suffering from too many options.

Yes and no.

I forget the name but it was an alt-universal-login, as you do with Google or Facebook. I guess it's like the Fediverse in that you can use your ID everywhere - but it's not so limited in bubbles. I love this idea and would hope it might be one of the solutions we need. I would have tried to remember it if I'd realized it at the time.

Another thing is bridging. When we get Lemmy up the goal is to mirror the SaidIt content somehow. And to have ways to cross over to WikiSpooks, InfoGalactic, and GiraffeIdeas.wiki and back. There are many ideas and ways.

Saidit is a group of users, but what if you disagreed with saidit and wanted to do things a little different? What if you could fork saidit keeping the same users and content with your differences to them while still connected to the old saidit?

THAT is the ultimate goal. And it's also how this all got started. magnora7 is the owner of SaidIt.net but many of us want a more fair social management system and/or actual leadership and goals. That's what spawned /s/PhoenixForum and /s/Cassy.

We are in a competition against big tech and platforms need a certain threshold of users to be viable and that gets even bigger the more diverse the topics you want, say hobbies etc.

Alt tech is suffering from too many options. My thinking is can there be a way to bring the many platforms and users together but allow them there original independance mostly. With the joined platforms barriers will reduce and more people share in common content.

Federation can work but there is a better way. Which is content becomes common property available to anyone, and its the users or the groups of users that decide how they want to use the content. Saidit is a group of users, but what if you disagreed with saidit and wanted to do things a little different? What if you could fork saidit keeping the same users and content with your differences to them while still connected to the old saidit?

It's not about migrating/competing. Ideally it's about bridging and branching out and sharing for redundancy and decentralized resilience.

In fact, it might survive even that. The IP address changes, but with Tor you don't configure your site to be hosted on a specific IP address (because of course you're trying to obscure it). It should simply connect to the again when the router is back up, and then it'll be hosted on the same address. It's something we can test, though.
