I've felt that way before. I've even felt it about people who are more than conventionally attractive. People who I can look at and say: "Yeah, she's beautiful."... And then just feel nothing about at all.

I assume it's some evolutionary, lizard brain quirk. Something instinctive in me that tells me, on some biological level that I can smell or see but not consciously understand, that we wouldn't be a good pair to be breeding? My eyes tell me that they are beautiful, my brain tells me they are nice, but some instinctive ape centre inside me says: "No, our kids would have lung problems and would die trying to climb their first tree. NEXT!"

Love, lust and desire are odd things like that. It's like a woman describing her ideal man to a person who matches every criteria she's describing and then going off with someone else who seems to have none of those qualities - we might know, intellectually, what's good about a person but be biologically driven to get something else despite ourselves. Very odd.

I think I agree with you. If she did or said something to end their relationship (even if she "dumped him") he moved on and married a woman who is now his wife, and he did so by choice, not willing to wait for the ex to come to her senses.

He can be free from guilt if he gave her the opportunity to write her communication out, whatever it was she wanted to say. If she is not willing to do that, that is more evidence that he is being set up for a fall.

My thoughts: We should do more to be reconciled with people while they are yet living instead of waiting for them to die. It would be good for him to confess his faults to both his ex and his wife to gain their forgiveness. He could give the "ex" the option to communicate openly with him, so that his wife could also hear or read what is said, but not privately face-to-face. He would hurt his wife doing so and could even fall into temptation in person and make matters even worse. A safe option would be for him to send the ex a written message, allowing the wife to read it first. If the ex is serious about communicating, she will compromise on the requirement for it to be in person and also reply in writing for the wife to also see.

Some of you may not have been in the mind space for this yet but back in the day this exact same JKR effect happened to a different person.

Dan Savage is/was a very well known gay man who would ostensibly be with transgender people on 99.99% of issues. He was giving a speech at a university and used the word "tranny", which at the time was still a very common term and it was perceived more like a shorthand way of saying transsexual. Like saying granny for grandma, etc. anyway, at some point the early 4th wave type TRAs decided that word had become the "T slur" and a bunch of the students freaked the hell out and were like throwing themselves out of the auditorium claiming they were experiencing violence etc... Dan Savage became the "big bad" to the LGBT community even though he did more on his own that all of those people combined. They tried to make it like he dropped the N bomb in the middle of his talk. It was CRAZY how much they hated him. The difference is Dan Savage decided his career depended on staying in the good graces so he caved in and threw himself at the feet of the TRA mob. He had to come up with excuses about a different time etc... I need to add in my performative hate for this author in case any of the people reading it disagree with her views enough to get upset over me writing fanfic in her world. Like if anyone hates her that much they wouldn't be reading it? The really funny thing is I don't think she'd care beyond breaking them by saying "thank you for supporting me and my views by continuing to write things and generate interest in my franchise"

I read fanfiction (it passes the time, and it costs nothing) and I've run across more than a few authors who openly proclaim their utter loathing for Rowling and view their continued use of her material as somehow "taking it back" for the oppressed people she's supposedly advocating the genocide of. They really do make the central aspect of their lives this woman and her refusal to validate the mentally ill, the fetishists, and the predators.

(One guy actually went so far as to rewrite something like 1/3 of a 10k-word chapter just to put in a massive "take that" against Rowling with a totally irrelevant digression into how one of the key characters is actually trans and thanks to a magical potion is able to be their "correct" gender, and how trans people are actually really common in magical society thanks to this potion.)

Alternate explanation: These people are trans and pass well enough to trick your eyes but not enough to trick your brain and subconsciously you can tell there's very subtle anatomy clues and hints to let you know they're not the sex they're pretending to be which is why they can "look pretty" but you wouldn't want to sleep with them cause they're actually a man and something about them (slender hips, slightly large jaw, extended brow, etc.) is telling your brain that.

This person is not trans, though. She's 5'6"-5'7" and her voice is extremely feminine; no man can sound like that.

That's why they hate her so much. She agrees with them on 99.99% of things. Therefore she is the worst because she 'betrayed' them.

Honestly it's nuts to put that much thought into any author. She wrote a book, she's not obligated to agree with you on every point just because you never branched out into other literature. I do think that's part of it, they see her as 'tainting' the only book series they ever read.
