Rather than believe a moron who wants to spread far right disinformation on Twitter/X, look at the article, the abstract for which is below. The Gates Foundation has famously and selflessly focused on reducing the spread of diseases by funding this research. In order to know how to prevent the spread of a diseases, one has to fund expensive research like that shown in the article. It is not possible to stop that spread unless scientists study the nature of the diseases, and especially the ways in which diseases spread from animals to humans.

Highly pathogenic avian H5N1 influenza A viruses occasionally infect humans, but currently do not transmit efficiently among humans. The viral haemagglutinin (HA) protein is a known host-range determinant as it mediates virus binding to host-specific cellular receptors1,2,3. Here we assess the molecular changes in HA that would allow a virus possessing subtype H5 HA to be transmissible among mammals. We identified a reassortant H5 HA/H1N1 virus—comprising H5 HA (from an H5N1 virus) with four mutations and the remaining seven gene segments from a 2009 pandemic H1N1 virus—that was capable of droplet transmission in a ferret model. The transmissible H5 reassortant virus preferentially recognized human-type receptors, replicated efficiently in ferrets, caused lung lesions and weight loss, but was not highly pathogenic and did not cause mortality. These results indicate that H5 HA can convert to an HA that supports efficient viral transmission in mammals; however, we do not know whether the four mutations in the H5 HA identified here would render a wholly avian H5N1 virus transmissible. The genetic origin of the remaining seven viral gene segments may also critically contribute to transmissibility in mammals. Nevertheless, as H5N1 viruses continue to evolve and infect humans, receptor-binding variants of H5N1 viruses with pandemic potential, including avian–human reassortant viruses as tested here, may emerge. Our findings emphasize the need to prepare for potential pandemics caused by influenza viruses possessing H5 HA, and will help individuals conducting surveillance in regions with circulating H5N1 viruses to recognize key residues that predict the pandemic potential of isolates, which will inform the development, production and distribution of effective countermeasures.

Thanks for the analysis. I am not sure how to respond quicly to the various points you mention, which taken on their own, are fair arguments, I think. My responses might seem to focus too much on small points, or on macro points, but the bigger picture is relevant: US/Russia geopolitics has always involved international engagements with former USSR countries. Secondly, Russia is essentially a mafia that has always tried to influence former USSR contries. Indeed, Russia controlled Ukraine politics and much Ukraine's corruption until 2014. Russia was poised to continue their takeover of eastern Ukraine during 2014-22, but the invasion in February 2022 required unofficial NATO support. We could argue that NATO should have allowed the invasion, which is part of a larger discussion. We could also see that the NATO's military industrial complexes stood to gain significantly in their support of Ukraine. Arguably, Trump's presidency set in motion the Russia/China/Iran/North Korea partnership. Many points to be made there, but one example you might recall is that Trump's cabinet put massive tarrifs on the export of soybeans and other crops to China, which benefitted both China and Russia, when Russia sold soybeans and other crops to China thereafter. US farmers suffered significantly under Trump's presidency. My main point is that the warning signs mentioned in the 2014 article were present at that time for others to see, as we might agree. Journals that addressed it were 'Foreign Affairs' and the 'National Review' (Conservative, though appropriately critical of Trump in recent years) and others. As of 1 June, Russian combat losses amount to 508,780 troops, as their strategy has famously been to push men toward their slaughter in order to gain ground in eastern Ukraine. It's horrific. Ukraine's losses are also massive. I think we can look at the complexity of geopolitics in relation to that war, but the simple fact is that Russia never had the right or appropriate reason to invade Ukraine, to displace millions, to murder and torture and wound 100s of thousands, and Russia should leave Ukraine. There are numerous reasons NATO should help, though we might disagree on that.

Bullshit. Donilon formerly served as a chief strategist for the 2020 Biden presidential campaign, one of many strategists. You too can be a strategist. It doesn't matter what that has-been says. Look at any poll and you'll see the 2 candidates at 50/50. Whichi is a good reminder that voters need to get to the polls. Biden supporters are angry primarily about only one thing: US support for Israel, which isn't something Biden can do much about.

He wrote that at the end of April 2014, after these invasions, per wiki:

Following Ukraine's Revolution of Dignity, Russia occupied and annexed Crimea from Ukraine and supported pro-Russian separatists fighting the Ukrainian military in the Donbas war. The first eight years of conflict also included naval incidents, cyberwarfare, and heightened political tensions. In February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine and began occupying more of the country.

In early 2014, the Euromaidan protests led to the Revolution of Dignity and the ousting of Ukraine's pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych. Shortly after, pro-Russian unrest erupted in eastern and southern Ukraine, while unmarked Russian troops occupied Crimea. Russia soon annexed Crimea after a highly disputed referendum. In April 2014, Russian-backed militants seized towns in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region and proclaimed the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) and the Luhansk People's Republic (LPR) as independent states, starting the Donbas war.

It was apparent at that time that NATO members would offer Ukraine support while trying not to intervene. So yeah, that continues.

Indeed, they're the ones who want you to think that you and a few thousand others who follow Trump are so much smarter than 99.99% of the rest of the world. If that's true, are they also more knowledgeable? They seem to avoid assessments of other centers of power worldwide.

I think it's a matter of proportion, where the leading forums have a massively disproportionate advantage over other forums. Twitter/X - if we consider it a forum - is a leading spreader of disinformation after the Musk takeover. I can't comment on Discord because I don't use it and never found it informative or interesting when I did use it. But in partial agreement with your comment, if we want to consider a forum a social website with nested comments, here is a list: https://www.reddit.com/r/RedditAlternatives/comments/1anols3/social_websites_with_nested_comments_v7 Saidit's D3 was one of the first, if not the only one who put that list together several years ago.

Because the list above excludes some of the fascist forums, here they are, with other forums, from D3's 3-year old list (hence the rakings are also 3 years old, from old Alexa):

Agreed, failure to get the spam is likely losing Saidit potential new users

allowing spam (to artificially inflate Saidit's popularity profile?)

No - that's not proposed in my comment. I propose that more mods help delete spam and ban spammers

Increased traffic, if essentially all fake/bot/spam, is helpful toward ... what exactly?

Higher website traffic stats makes Saidit more visible via searches &c

Really? The actual solution seems rather to be to pause new subscriptions

Pausing new subscriptions would pause new users and Saidit would die. However, restricting posts by new users is something automoderators can do.

There seems to be a perfectly good site-wide actual solution to spam that some people seem to be straining to pretend is not available.

I think we all agree on some basic solutions. We'll need m7 to allow us to try them.

Netanyahu formed the "war cabinet" so that Eizenkot and Ganz would help with the genocide. After they resigned, because they complained that there was no strategy for the genocide, far right assholes wanted to take their places. Netanyahu therefore dissolved the small group - normally of 6 - so that he could control the genocide with the previous government war departments (I forget their names), which are still active.

Thanks for the info.

Chamath Palihapitiya has predicted bitcoin could "completely replace gold" as countries adopt it—potentially pushing it's market capitalization toward gold's $15.7 trillion.

Look up this person. He's not to be trusted as an economist, not in the slightest. We know bitcoin can be a volitile investment. One should only buy as much bitcoin as you're willing to lose. Gold has always been much more stable.

This is what Chamath says of himself at LinkedIn: "Chamath Palihapitiya is the founder of Social Capital, an organization that makes bets on potentially transformational ideas, technology, and people. Social Capital supports entrepreneurship at all stages in diverse markets including energy transition, space, healthcare and consumer."

Hence his comments are merely meant to draw attention to himself. The idea that bitcoin could overtake gold as a reliable currency is ridiculous.

What users here don't seem to appreciate is that new accounts and numerous page visits increase traffic to Saidit, which raises its profile. M7 has noted in the past that increased traffic is helpful, even if Ed generated it at that time. So I think the solution is automoderator development and many additional moderators who can ban/remove spam, while also adding and upvoting content.

I did much of this over the past few days in several subs, but the spammers now avoid those subs. Their strategy is to use a new username a few dozen times, and when that's not working, they reduce activity in the subs where their usernames have been banned. (Admins can ban the usernames for all of Saidit, but I am not sure that's happening.)

Good idea.

My method is to copy a spammer username (eg. saifullah in /s/technology), remove that new spam from said user and then ban the user. This has to be repeated numerous times in each sub, though an automoderator would also help.

Improving automod rules might help. The latest problems occur while Indians are awake or at work - eg. Texas time 5 am - 7 pm - and most mods are on Saidit only briefly each day. Hence more mods and admins who can visit during this time would help. Automoderator programs can limit posts to users with - say - 10 comment karma points and accounts that are 5 days old. An exception to this can be allowed on /s/Introductions.

It would also be most helpful if admins would ban obvious spammers. Mods can ban them in each sub, but there are too many that are posting in several subs. They should be banned for all of Saidit.

Excellent point.

Though the Daily Mail is part of the MSM, it's also very well known as the Daily Fail because it's famous as a clickbait right wing tabloid and nothing more. It's not taken seriously by anyone with a basic knowledge of news media. The 4th Viscount Rothermere owns and uses it to push clickbait and right wing misinformation. It has one of the lowest scores for reliabity: https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/daily-mail and https://www.allsides.com/news-source/daily-mail So I wouldn't say it's a typical example of the MSM, which is marginaly better at reporting and much more main stream. Hardly anyone in the 'main stream' of news watchers would want to quote the Daily Fail.

At least try to get one comment correct. The so-called 'war on woke' is entirely a right wing invention, supported by an extensive, heavily funded networ. Hate campaigns like that are the main tools of authoritarians. Only fascist idiots are concerned about these minor personal matters. What really matters is the economy, but because that's improving, the focus has been on angering fascist morons about non-issues like skin color, who fucks whom, and empathy. They're the ones who want you to hate everyone who is not evil. "LOL"

They're not "Democratic leaders", not in the least. They were merely volunteers at polling stations. Part of the job is to process absentee ballots, by putting them in the appropriate ballot areas to be counted. At present, "videos allegedly showed Geter-Pataky and other Ganim operatives stuffing stacks of absentee ballots into drop boxes." If those were legal absentee ballots, perhaps there's nothing odd about putting them in ballot boxes. Moreover, their supposed candidate (Ganim) won the do-over election, and said:

We only learned through the media that individuals from both 2019 mayoral primary campaigns have been charged with election violations. We have not been provided with any details other than what is contained in media reports.

Hence, nothing to report at this time, other than the charges.

Yeah - there is no sane scenario where the launch of a few little rockets toward the US would be a1st strike strategy for Russia. That would be the most ridiculous move in the the history of geo-politics. Anyone associating those ships with a WWIII scenario has a mental disorder or is 7 years of age.

Indeed.

My initial response is perhaps more blunt (as usual), that this concern about two old Russian ships and their pathetic rockets is from morons who have absolutely no concept of US military strength or geopolitics.

For me, the main problem is that Cuba has made a serious error in Cuba-US relations, even if the US should have lifted almost all sanctions long ago.

[–]YoMamma 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Exactly, not to mention their ICBMs are much more dangerous than a few missiles in Cuba. In fact, the ships are safer in Cuba than in the Black Sea. Dore's trolling - as usual - the atttention whore. The US is not worried about a couple ancient Russian ships in Cuba. If there were nukes on board, that would be a different story, but that's not the case. Putin knows which lines not to cross.

Cuba US relations took a step back with this development, but the US has always been at fault for fucking over it's southern neighbours' economies for the past 200 years. As for Russian meddling, Cuban-American Christo-fascist voters for Trump should notice that they are traitors to the US by supporting an agent for Russia as president.
