The 1950's were a very good time in America, much better than the present. The US population was less than half what it is now. Lots of opportunity, lots of open space, very little crime. Life expectancy was nearly as high as it is now, almost 70 years of age. We had television, radio, automobiles, airplanes, motion pictures, telephones, inexpensive books and newspapers. We didn't have computers or cell phones, but, who needs them? Library discussion groups and cheap intellectual newsletters took the place of what we're doing now. Now, those no longer exist, of course. The computer industry has marketed them out of existence!

Are you Canadian? I grew up in Canada, myself, but I was born in the US. Gives me a certain perspective. You have to understand, that the bark of Americans is worse than their bite. There are many checks and balances in the US system, and, let's face it, Trump is a basket case, and everyone knows it. Already, the governors of both New York and California are telling him to take a hike, as is the head of the Federal Reserve Bank, and, even, to some extent, the Pentagon. So, I don't think you have to worry too much about violent insurrections. Trump's mainly just irritating.

Actually, the French didn't have the right military equipment or support systems in place to attack Germany from the West, with any success, at all. They had invested exclusively in defensive systems, so, they might have done a little damage, but, the Germans would have easily repelled the attack.

In the past, I think people went to college to get access to a really good university library. Prior to the internet, that was the only place you could really get information in depth.
