Open source is the solution and it's coming, step by step. There's already open source operating systems and devices that tries to negate the problem and open source processors are on the horizon.

Sure the complexity will make so nasty code can still hide in the system but it's a whole new ballgame.

One of the big problems at sea is that people literally aren't watching where they're going.

On small ships there's lookouts to watch out for the large, autopiloted ships that often has ONE guy on the bridge, hopefully minding his job and not sipping coffee while he reads a book or takes a break. The longest time I've seen a freighter take to respond to radio calls is 15 minutes and roughly a few minutes from disaster.

On large ships they have radars that picks up medium large ships and lookouts to spot small ships and floating debris that can damage the large ship. Sometimes they simply don't see small ships, particularly in dark or rough conditions. Most times there's only one lookout and sometimes he needs a quick toilet break.

It's a problem to the point where marine shops sells extra radar reflectors to mount on your small vessel to increase your chances of showing up on larger ships.

While I consider the chances of foul play to be high, I have no doubt he could have been hit by a larger vessel that never even noticed, breaking his flimsy plastic boat while his hardened, watertight safebox or soft and bendable drybag floats on.

Much more likely than a small leak that made him sink imo

Its not about personal preference.

I've had very positive experiences with vaping as a replacement for smoking, but as long as vaping is only "less dangerous than tobacco but we don't really know" it should be a tool in the treatment of nicotine addiction, not a permanent solution.

With bakery flavours, fruit flavours and such there's reports of non-smokers taking up vaping, in large parts due to the exotic flavours.

That's not a direction I support.

Rule 4 example: If a thread is "What's your favorite sports team" in a sub you moderate, and then someone comments "The Bengals" you are not allowed to ban them, even as a joke. It's on topic, and not dragging discussion down the pyramid of debate and so is in good faith. If someone comments something like "kys dummy Bengals are best idiot" then you have the option to ban them because it's not in good faith as per the pyramid of debate, despite being on topic. As a final example, if someone comments in that thread "Gouda cheese melts well" you have the option to ban them, as they're not on topic, despite not dragging discussion downward on the pyramid of debate. However if someone posts something both on topic, and in good faith, you CANNOT delete this type of post repeatedly or else you will lose all moderator privileges on saidit after a couple warnings.

I can understand why you'd need a wiki for all these intricate rules.

Edit:

One person cannot moderate more than 40 subs. Creating multiple accounts to bypass this is not allowed.

right now HK is governmentally separate from China (like Macau), and China is already violating those terms by extraditing people from HK and so on.

I think that's the problem, the government and part of the legislative branch is supposed to be elected but is instead appointed by China. The judges is appointed by the government, and even if the HK constitution is supposed to be valid until 2049 it doesn't really matter when the judges favours the man over the people.

[–]Ian 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

China basically ignores Taiwan and says "It's ours" while Taiwan basically does the same about the Chinese mainland (though not so insistently the last few decades).

I don't see any case where China can allow full independence in all but claim when it comes to Hong Kong, they've already got their hands on HK while they never had them on Taiwan.

They've spent decades cultivating a "good guy" image, I don't imagine they'll blow all that good PR

That's not my impression, to me they've been the "not bad enough dudes" for the western world to justify anything beyond a trade war. A prime example would be how they've supported the North Korean regime directly, or how it's practically recognized how they sell the body parts of executioned prisoners.

conspiring to use your ranch as a eugenics operation

It's not a conspiracy unless one consider having more than the average numbers of children to allow your genes to have a higher chance of spreading an immoral conspiracy between the parents.

The article also says that he wanted to but doesn't mention any efforts to do so, it even goes so far as saying "There is no indication that it would have been against the law.". Would have, not is. So to me it seems as serious as his efforts to bankroll funding to find the paranoia particle.

If the article argued that it DID happen AND the women were unwilling however...

uniquely skeezy genes

That's literally arguing for eugenics.

Also, the whole of Epstein's story is a giant conspiracy, have you been following his ties with Mossad, FBI, his sex and pedo rings?

Sure. And I consider his cooperation with Ghislaine a conspiracy, his alleged secret videotaping and blackmailing a possible conspiracy (assuming he involved other helpers) and so on.

But I don't consider having a shitload of kids with consenting partners a conspiracy.
