Yup. But that's what you get in a free-speech zone. Even the shittiest of opinions can be voiced with equal strength. The only way to counteract them is not with censorship, but with counter-positions.

OK, I understand - if you feel that these arguments (or debates) are causing you to suffer, then by all means avoid them. I feel that the expression of peaceful rhetoric designed to combat hate and fear can be a joy unto itself - by perhaps alleviating the collective pain that little bit by sharing your perspective.

But indeed that in itself has to come from a place where you find it enjoyable and stimulative (as in the joy inherent in being altruistic) - and if you don't then it is always preferable to not engage.

I understand and get you.

However I'd just like to point out that a big point in giving counter arguments on the Internet is not always to change the mind of the person you're talking to, but also to impact the mind of those bystanders reading the conversation.

Not to mention that you can always simply copy and paste good counter arguments to multiple conversations, saving you time and effort.

Silencing people you disagree with is not as helpful to make a place like this into a good area for discussion, challenging their viewpoints is far more effective. The only way a culture of hatred (which includes racism) can be dissolved is by challenging the underlying beliefs and motivations for their grievances and dissolving the unfounded assumptions underneath them.

Many of the things you have just mentioned indeed are conspiracies, they are simply not conspiracy theories, but rather conspiracy facts.

Nothing personal to you, as you're not the only one that I've seen do this, but it's way too often that I nowadays see the word "conspiracy" conflated with "falsehood". Obviously there are, have been and will continue to be a multitude of conspiracies that are very much factual. The word conspiracy simply means: "a secret plan by a group to do something unlawful or harmful", it is not a synonym for something that is inherently false. Far from it. But these days the propaganda has been so effective that the word "conspiracy" has literally been conflated with the term "conspiracy theory" and ultimately with likely those theories that are least likely to be true (Flat Earth anyone?).

Either way, it's a semantic issue, but a highly relevant one nonetheless, one that should not be ignored in such discussions.

It's up to all of us to make this a place where good, productive, respectful and positive conversation thrives. Since Reddit is in dire need of an alternative and (in my view) Voat is a toxic cesspool (not only of the most blatant racism, but just general toxicity as well), SaidIt seems one of the best alternatives out there.

That's awesome! The site maintenance costs still seem to be very low for now. Do you expect higher costs later on with more visitors coming in and more active traffic?

Truth be told, I have no idea how much it costs to maintain such a site. Though I have a site of my own (www.embraceyourexperience.com), the monthly server costs amount to barely anything (probably around 10$ per month), but I have no idea how much a project and servers for something the size of SaidIt cost. To be fair, I also have no estimation of how much Reddit costs - years ago it was supposedly 33K per month, but now that amount must have increased greatly.

How is it possible that SaidIt costs are so low? And are you expecting the cost to increase any time soon?

Dude, I totally make such comments regarding NYT, WaPo, CNN,.... on Reddit all the time. You are fighting against a straw-man that doesn't exist. Basically, because you have partisan bias, you think I have one as well and somehow adore mainstream media (and I assume - left leaning media?).

In my view, the vast, vast majority of MSM is total trash. I actually tend to go to RT for more unbiased news, that's how little faith I have in Western media (to be fair, RT may not be the best source on what's happening in Russia or China, but it readily calls out the propaganda and bias in Western media).

So there is literally zero irony in my statement. You are just blindly assuming things about me that aren't true.

Freeing Earth - Solutions for a Better World by Jac0b777 in C_S_T

Well, the C_S_T subreddit on Reddit that I've been a part of for many years has always been more essay than shower-thought like (despite the title of the sub), so I am posting with that in mind, despite this being SaidIt :)

Which comes first? The inner solutions will always come first, out of which awareness is primary. From being aware, then one can guide one's creative impetus, dissolve the pain and limitation within, as well as guide one's inner world and visualize one's desired reality or simply play with creative visualization. Your comment related to consciously directed day-dreaming fits in there as well, of course :)

[–]Jac0b777[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

It does not really require hope, it simply requires an inner desire to make the world better, as well as yourself.

Most of what I've written touches on both the individual and collective level. Even if the world goes to hell and all is lost, at least attempting to make it better, as well as attempting individual improvement, will make your life happier and more fulfilling as a result.

You don't even need to believe the world will be saved to do these things - simply contributing to your own growth and that of the world will give a more meaningful life and will touch others with your example and action.

That is at least my experience - and in my opinion acting in this manner is worth the effort.

Well indeed that was exactly my point (which I think can be seen from the context of the whole post) - I simply used the word world, instead of civilization.

However our actions do not impact our species alone. The Earth itself will survive us, no matter what happens, but the millions of animal and plant species on this planet are well in our grasp to help protect or destroy - and we are now far more on the side of destroying them and their natural habitat.

I have been using Linux Mint for several months now and I'm really enjoying it.

I have an older laptop (now 10 years old, but still very solid) and it works like a charm. The security, the performance, the lack of inherent spyware that Windows users have to put up with....unless you need it for very specific programs or games that run only on Windows (and you can't use WINE [which emulates the Windows environment on Linux] to get them to work on Linux), Linux is the better choice.

If one wants a productive space for conversation, one needs to move away from any kind of hate. Intelligent conversation cannot flourish with unchecked anger going around.
