I see people here have no clue what "allegory" means.

"Animal Farm" is allegory. The farm represents the Soviet Union, the farm animals represent the workers, the pigs represent the Communist leadership who betrayed the workers and became just like the ruling aristocrats they had overthrown. The whole purpose of the fictional story is to tell the story of the failure of the Russian revolution.

"Lord of the Rings" is not allegory, its just a story. It is an invented mythology where the elves represent, well, nothing really, the dwarfs represent, well they're just dwarfs, a lot of people said that Mordor represents "modern industrialism" but Tolkien explicitly denied that. Hobbits and the Shire are a kind of reflection of Tolkien's idealised fantasy of the English countryside and simple country folk, but that's as far as it goes, and that's not enough to make it an allegory.

To be an allegory, it has to be an allegory of something like "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" is a retelling of the Gospels with Aslan an allegory for Christ.

But LOTR and its legendarium don't represent anything but themselves.

Good question. My reading of his work - including the Silmarillion - is that he tried as much as possible to write actual histories that could not be easily simplified into allegories. Readers naturally referred to his works as allegories, which he considered annoying because they were histories to him, grounded in actual history. Though they were also allegorical, they could not be simplified as to the specific allegorical messages they may have been, as his histories are built up from a past that extends hundreds if not thousands of years, in actual history. Middle Earth was thus - for example - it's own historical world that could not compare 1:1 with another history, but rather tha many other histories.

There's been a lot of discusson on the way in which the Hobbit and LOTR are based on the circumstances of the English, of the 20th c, or 18th c, or of Anglo-Saxon England, or all three. His main points begin at 2:40.

He notes he's not bothered reading F&SF for the past 10+ years. After that he claims - with no evidence - that the new editor, because she's black, was hired because of DEI. After that - years after - F&SF is late getting out their next edition, the last one of which was in Winter 2024.

1) F&SF has had declining readership - at least for this reviewer - for at least the past 10+ years.

2) There is NO evidence that the new editor was hired because of DEI. The fact that the's black, and an SF writer is NOT related to DEI.

3) One should look at how F&SF lost much of its readership - or at least this reviewer's readership - in the past 14+ years.

4) Is the current editor making matters worse? Perhaps yes, perhaps no, but it's NOT necessarily because of DEI.

5) If DEI is the reason for the hiring of the current editor, the reviewer's claim of this would have to depend on what he knows of what happened among the hiring team that hired the editor.

6) If DEI influenced that decision, does it matter? No. The performance is what matters, and a bad editor can be replaced.
