I used to get such looks from people at the LGBT center for pointing out that gay isn't a personality type. I think most of the people there agreed with me but when you get staff pushing this stuff it dissuades people from talking. One example was something like giving examples of "LGBT heros or role models in fiction or real life etc."

My fiction example was the rerelease of Battlestar Galactica. There were several examples of gay characters but they never tried to throw it in your face. You just find out by some plot point down the line. I said i appreciated the fact that the show didn't make being gay their only plot point and they even made it into an almost insignificant trait.

The other real life person at the time was "Bradley Manning" (now changed name to Chelsea) who had found classified material showing corruption and war crimes going on in the US occupation of Iraq. The "collateral murder" video was part of that release where it showed a US helicopter crew murdering some civilians then waiting for an ambulance to arrive and then murdering the medical responders all while laughing about it. Manning ended up getting caught and thrown into solitary confinement. Basically he was on "suicide watch" which meant they took away all clothing and blankets so he was forced to lay naked in a room for 23 hours per day. Literally 1 person in that conversation knew who I was talking about. It was an undergrad who helped explain to the rest of the students and staff who he was then he brought up how Eli might be trans and suddenly the staff seems interested.

Later on Eli did transition to Chelsea after going through the solitary confinement period. I do still find the actions heroic but after transitioning (s)he has been questionable. It's hard to blame someone though after going through that shit. It just really annoyed me that they only seemed slightly interested after hearing "might be trans".
