Because they know they’re not the real target of those slurs, so they never have to feel any of the visceral discomfort. Even if the words were wielded against them because they were mistaken for gay (because most people believe trans people are homosexual) the fact that they know they’re not gay prevents them from internalizing the words and feeling the visceral discomfort and danger. The same reason why transwomen are thrilled by the prospect and experience of sexual harassment. Their minds are focused on validation, power/control, and basking in narcissistic glow.

Also throwing around the slur words is a way for them to wield control and simultaneously perform their role play. It also aids their goal of pretending that we’re on the other side of homophobia and biphobia, and that those slur words are now vestiges without power.

I agree with everything, but I think a lot of the people now occupying LGBTQIAWTF+ spaces genuinely do believe we're past homophobia, because they were fortunate enough to grow up in a progressive bubble where they never had to witness it. So the only injustices they see are trans people not having surgeries paid for on a whim and TV shows not having enough demisexual lithromantic representation.

where they never had to witness it.

Or they were being homophobes themselves, without realizing it, and thought it is something normal and not bad.

YUP. I think you've nailed it. I am a fairly progressive person but I'm always shocked when I talked to other progressive people and hear them suggest something like this. Like, hello? Do you realize there are many people in the world who don't believe in the views you hold?

There's this idea that only people of a certain minority can reclaim a slur used towards that minority.

In that context, when a transman who claims to be gay uses homophobic slurs, it's like saying "I can use these words because I'm gay". When they keep using these slurs and nobody calls them out, it's like the people around them are supporting their idea that they're a real gay man.

At the same time, it serves as a way to be offensive towards actual gay men. And if these gay complain about being called homophobic slurs, well, you can call them transphobes for it.

So for them it's killing two birds with one stone.

Aah. Spot on. Of course that's why. Sometimes it's so painfully regressive and narcissitic it's just hard to believe it's true.

There's a show called Shameless that had a trans female character claim to be a "gay man" and used the f-slur.

Appropriate name for the show at least then

If they ever make a sequel, they should name it Shameful. Or at least make a parody/better version called Shameful that calls out this shameful, homophobic shit.

EDIT: It looks like reddit(4yrs ago) was not a fan of the trans character Trevor --Why is Trevor so unpopular?.

I don't watch the show and have no clue what the story is like, but I was curious about what fans thought about trans female character Trevor.

The original, UK version of Shameless was a great show and nothing like the stupid, woke Americanised one. I hate seeing how much US Shameless has deviated from the source material.

Like I said, my female non-binary friend who primarily dates male people came out as a "faggot" on this year's national coming out day. A word that would never ever be used against her, so therefore she has no business "reclaiming."

Tbh, I couldn't care less about slurs. I feel like this with all types of slurs too BTW. Not just LGB but also racial, sexist, ableist, etc. You give power to the word instead of erasing it when you enforce censoring them. It's the hipocrisy that gets me... You can say xyz but I can't say abc? Like??? They can get away with saying f-word but we can't say the t-word? Fuck off. We all know very damn well they would be bitching about t-word being said but would continue to use f-word and justifying it.

Tbh I think it's kind of a dare. Like, in their mind, they can say it because they're a real gay dude, and if anyone gets mad at them, they can pull out the old transphobia card because If you're mad at me then you don't see me as a real gay guy waahhh!
