Area 5150 Demo @ Evoke 2022. IBM PC 5150 with 4.77MHz Intel 8088 CPU and CGA. "no composite tricks" TTL CGA only. It starts by doing a 640x200 image at 16 colors on a graphics card that can only do two colors at that resolution and only gets better. 640kb is enough for everyone. by Chipit in Computers

I am not sure I understand: is this newly-written software on that old hardware, demonstrating its absolute ultimate capabilities? Or old software and people are cheering ... why?

I mean, it truly is kind of impressive what they could do on such old hardware, but what is the point? Some people are that much into retro tech?

Personally I have had computers since 1981 and I have endured their limitations for that long, I could not cheer this, I think.

I dropped $25k on a POS system last year. Both units run windows 10. The software is windows only and I doubt I'll find drives for the peripherals. I also have a photo printer and have searched high and low for a full featured drive to no avail. Linux is not an option.

Also, I have employees who still have trouble putting an attachment to an email, I doubt they could handle Linux. They can barely operate their iPhone.

Linux is nowhere near main stream ready. I truly wish it was but it's not. It's not a viable option to replace windows for most people and businesses.

I have run Linux on every laptop I own. You should try not using Ubuntu. I saw those kinds of issues when I was younger... and was running Ubuntu. I'm embarrassed to admit how retarded I was. Ubuntu makes a good server distro, that's it.

I generally consider distros to be more the same than different because you can run any and pretty much the same software on all of them. Any distro but Ubuntu. It's sad because we tell new users to try that one, they get greeted with all the problems you describe and assume Linux is hard or something if the "user friendly" one requires so much trouble shooting. A buggy distro is not user friendly. Ubuntu is more buggy than any other distro on random hardware its devs didn't explicitly test. That's because they always want to "push the limit" (in ways that offer zero value to real users). Well doing goofy shit to your distro means bug inconsistency across hardware.

Have you ever fucking tried? Sound doesn't work, wifi doesn't work, the function keys don't work, it's a disaster. Shocked you'd even say that tbh.

I have never seen anything bad come from running Linux on a laptop. While I'm not 50:50 on Linux vs Windows, I'm more like 10000000000000000000000000000:0.000000000000000000000000001, but if I were to give Windows a handicap so it was 50:50 I'd think the Windows on desktop makes more sense because of gaming.

Why would anyone not install Linux on a laptop?

Maybe just maybe if you run Ubuntu that attempts to be overly smart (a lot less smart at designing a distro than it thinks it is), then maybe Ubuntu would do something wonky that wouldn't work with your particular laptop. But that's what you get for running a wonky ass distroy that pretends it's stable.

I have Linux on a laptop and I have an old MacBook Pro. They both run like a Swiss watch compared to Windows.

The iOS windowing system is exquisitely stupid, but getting used to it is worth it. The Apple OS and hardware are years if not decades more advanced than any Wintel garbage.

They're already working on Algebraic Lattices. That's supposed to be safe from quantum computers.

Although not mentioned, nobody has found a practical use for modern quantum computers. They're pretty basic right now and apparently struggle with rudimentary math.

In 1996 I was working at an IBM lab in "central services". In normal terms I was internal IT at IBM. We were trying all kinds of new things including a full T-1 to the Internet. A full T-1. Pathetically slow now but back then it was blisteringly fast. For shits and giggles I bought a special network card that had the ability to snoop our network for all Internet traffic. IIRC it went into "promiscuous mode". Who went where and what did they look at. I stopped poking around within 2 days and shut the computer down and pulled that network card. The most normal looking and acting people were looking at absolutely disgusting content. I didn't want to know and wish I had never looked. I was running a natural mask class c domain with an RS/6000 as the DNS with static IP's so I knew who surfed where by IP.

There was this one hot girl that always downplayed her looks and kept up a sweet innocent facade. She was looking at big dicks.

thank you for the reply.

i need something i can use to turn on/off the websites or traffic of protocols of the games my kids use. i'm willing to try everything i can get my hands on and am not worried about any damage cuz anything i use it on, i can nuke. a timer of some sort would be nice too. to schedule when it turns on/off. options to which ip would even be better. i use tightvnc and the ssh/ssl vnc viewer on mint for monitoring them, but it would be nice to do other things without having to look so often. currently learning to use wireshark to find what i need to block.

thanks again for the reply. going to check out the software end of it.

The Hosts File

If you're on Windows: an easy, but circumventable, solution to block websites is to mess with the hosts file. I take no legal responsibility for any damages caused by following the steps below.

For each computer:

  1. Log into an administrator account with the appropriate permissions

  2. Hit the windows key and type in "notepad"

  3. Click "run as administrator", then "Yes" (might need to enter a password)

  4. Hold down the control key "ctrl" and press "O"; a file window should pop up

  5. Copy-paste "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts" and hit "enter"; a file should open

  6. Hold "ctrl" and hit "end" to go to the end of the last line and hit "enter" twice

  7. Type "127.0.0.1", make one space, and type the name of one website you want to block

  8. Optional: hit "enter" and repeat step 7 as many times as needed

  9. Hold "ctrl" and hit "S"; if you get a permissions error: make sure you're logged into an administrator account and launched notepad in administrator mode

  10. Restart your browser

Example hosts file:

#
127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost

127.0.0.1 example.com
127.0.0.1 games.com

In order to lift the block:

  1. Repeat steps 1-5 above

  2. Either delete the line or add "#" in front of it; the latter is recommended if you want to re-instate the block later

  3. Hold "ctrl" and hit "S"

  4. Restart your browser

Install Software

If you don't want to mess with the hosts file: you can install software, although a lot of it's paid or locks features behind a paywall.

My school used to have software to block websites on each computer. I found a list of software through a DDG search, but I legally endorse none of them and provide no guarantee of user satisfaction.

Remote Desktop

Remote Desktop allows you to control other computers over a network connection, but requires a premium version of Windows to be installed on the computer you want to control, but not on the controlling computer. You can get free software, but I have yet to find any that aren't complete garbage.

Unfortunately, I've been doing the couch-work-area thing. We do have a desk setup, but another in the family is also working from home and using it. It felt fine to be on the couch at first, but not so much now. Just makes me feel sore to be sitting on it all day.
